tracy? the philadelphia police department is mourning one of their own this morning. katy zachry is live outside the 12th district where the officer worked. >> reporter: we know officer lamar poole worked for the philadelphia police department for nearly two decades. this morning his colleagues here at the 12 district in southwest philadelphia say he loved riding his motorcycle. that's what he was doing yesterday afternoon. he was off duty at the time of the crash. he was on devereaux street turning on to the roosevelt boulevard. accident investigators say this silver toyota turned into front of his çmotorcycle, he was thrn from the bike. fellow officers say he was not wearing a helmet. he did die from severe head trauma. back in the 12th district, community members are having a strong reaction saying these officers locally hold young events for children in the area. >> these people do their job, a great job. and then i think we lost a great person. i believe that we lost a great person. >> reporter: and police say the driver of the car that hit the off-duty officer stopped for a brief moment but then a short distance away was actually stopped by witnesses who saw the crime. he has not been charged yet but i'm told dui is a likely charge. coming up at 5:30, we'll take a look at the stretch of road in philadelphia that sees more hit and runs than any other street in another officer who was killed in an sergeant rafael ali addaied nine days ago when his pickup crashed into a tree in roxborough. investigators say he was speeding on henry avenue when he missed the curve. police are looking at whether he may have fallen asleep at the wheel. he was a ten-year veteran of the force. meantime, a police officer in delaware county is recovering at home. >> close call here. that officer was shot in the line of duty over the weekend. ridley park officer marc hanly was released yesterday. he was shot as he and his partner were handling a suicide call. they were talking to darrel burt, talking him into surrendering when he opened fire. his bulletproof vest, as you see there, stopped one bullet. he was also shot in the leg. >> if i didn't have my vest on, we wouldn't be here for this party. i'm alive. i'm very thankful for that. >> burt is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons charges. friends remember a photo journalist murdered on air. adam ward's family will receive friends at a high school in southwestern virginia, not far from where a gunman killed him and reporter alison parker during a live report on wednesday morning. ward's family is encouraging people to wear the colors of salem high school and virginia tech. ♪ yesterday, family and friends gathered to remember parker and ward. the general manager of the tv station where they worked spoke about making mental health treatment a priority. >> anger eats at you and the result we saw on wednesday can be catastrophic. if we get strategic, we have a goal and a possibility of positive action and that's what i'd like you to think about in memory of alison and adam. >> there are scholarship funds set up in both of their names. 5:04. new from overnight, a man is facing charges in connection with a shooting in west philadelphia. we have video of his arrest. look at that. police arrested him around 11:30 last night, moments after someone shot a man about a block away at 57 and hazel avenue. the victim is in critical condition. police have not given us the suspect's name or a possible motive. also new from overnight, philadelphia police are investigating a shooting that damaged a car. investigators tell us they found 20 shell casings on rising sun avenue in north philadelphia. at least one bullet hit the car's wind shield there. it's not clear if anyone was hurt. we brought this to you as breaking news about half an hour ago. firefighters in the kensington section of philadelphia have this house fire under control. it started just before 4:00 on arbor street. as you see here, they got it knocked down pretty quickly. no one was injured. police are still questioning a woman after a 5-year-old girl went missing for almost 24 hours in north philadelphia over the weekend. here's what happened. the girl's babysitter reported the girl missing around 2:00 a.m. sunday in philadelphia's somerset neighborh]od. she said she left the girl in the care of another woman when she went to pick up school supplies an when she came back, both were gone. yesterday afternoon, the woman and the child were spotted walking down the street. the child's mother couldn't be found during the entire ordeal. so far, no one has been charged. happening today, 26 days from the holy father's arrival. philadelphia takes another step to help businesses prepare for the pope. teams led by mayor michael nutter will deliver hundreds of marketing kits to businesses across the city. the kits contain things like signs with #opennphl to send the message that businesses will be open during the papal visit. this is to emphasize the excitement, not the restrictions around the pope's visit. a new exhibit opens at the academy of natural sciences in center city. it will display plan and animal specimens collected by 18th and 19th century clergy who are also amateur scientists. you can see the exhibit in the academy's library starting this afternoon at 1:00. the contract between the philadelphia archdiocese and teachers' union runs out today. early bird negotiations that started in april broke off last week. the union said it rejected the church's latest offer because of salary issues. both sides agreed to start full negotiations. classes are scheduled to begin one week from tomorrow. it's back-to-school day today for the charter school in philadelphia. more than 1,300 kids will begin classes at the campus to somerton. they have a new studio space this year. in chester county, students in the coatesville area school district will start cracking the books again today. caln elementary school got a new face lift and principal. they will start with new laptop computers, other technology upgrades and a new math curriculum. happening today, a school district in montgomery county will breakç ground for a new center of learning. the ceremony at the new hallowell elementary school in horsham is scheduled to are this evening. the state-of-the-art school will be built right next to where the current school stands on maple avenue. here's a look at hallowell elementary school. the new building will handle more than twice the number it can handle right now, which is 300. new basketball courts are part of the revitalized ralph brooks park at 20th and tasker. we first told you about the project two years ago. there will be battling yet another wildfire in southern california. this one scorched more than a dozen acres. firefighters launched a ground attack to snuff out the flames. helicopters dropped water on the fire, close to nearby homes. there are no reports of injuries or damage. it's still not clear what started that fire. the suspect investigators say shot and killed a texas deputy over the weekend will be in court today. community members held a march yesterday in honor of deputy darren goforth. investigators say a gunman approached him from behind and shot him for no reason. this morning we're hearing toughness and gentility. he was always loyal, fiercely so. >> the suspect, shannon miles is charged with capital murder. investigators say deputy goforth had no previous contact with miles and the shooting appears to be unprovoked. a father faces charges after his gun went off by accident, shooting his 2-year-old daughter. the toddler had a leg wound at a home in oceanview, sussex county earlier yesterday, investigators say joseph jenkins' gun went off while he was showing it to his wife. he was arrested on charges after salt and child endarkerment. an iconic painter with deep local
