derailment overnight. investigators revealed the train was speeding before plunging off the tracks near seattle. >> nbc's kirk hawkins joins us live from dupont, washington, where the cleanup effort is underway this hour. kirk? >> reporter: ntsb investigators held a news conference here a short time ago, and they told us the train was traveling at 80 miles per hour, more than twice the legal speed limit of just 20 miles per hour. >> is everybody okay? >> i'm still figuring that out. we've got cars everywhere. and down on to the highway. >> reporter: an amtrak train on the inaugural run of high-speed train service to portland derailed, then veered off an overpass 40 miles south of seattle. several cars crashed into the busy interstate 5 freeway in the middle of monday morning rush hour and smashed into a semi-truck and several other cars. and now the investigation is focusing on the speed of the train and the condition of the tracks. >> preliminary indications are that the train was traveling at 80 miles per hour in a 30 mile-per-hour track. >> reporter: it was supposed to be a day of celebration. more than 80 passengers and crew on board for the first day of faster service including alex rosier, a reporter for nbc's affiliate king 5 who got off before the disaster. >> plenty of them were going to work, heading to the office or may have -- have been heading home for the holidays. >> and everybody comes in, usually going, oh, that's not going to happen. here we are, it's exactly what happened. >> reporter: the $180 million project has been the target of critics raising concerns about safety. and that debate may now be reignited. meanwhile, the ntsb investigation continues today as they try to find the other black box and determine the condition of the track. philadelphia, bicyclists are standing together to demand change. they want the city to take new safety measures after another cyclist was hit and killed by a car. matt delucia joins us live in center city. the family of one of the victims is talking about this. tell us more. >> reporter: they're heartbroken by what happened here. we're along 13th street by pine. this is where the accident happened. they want the roads to be safer for bicyclists. you see the bike lanes throughout the city here. but this one victim was here friday morning, near pine street. she was hit by a truck. 24-year-old becca redford has a broken leg, cracked ribs, and bruised lungs. she did have surgery yesterday. another is scheduled for tomorrow. it is not the first time something like this has happened. a few weeks ago, a few blocks away from where we are, 11th and spruce, 24-year-old emily fredericks died after being hit by a garbage truck while riding her bike. now the city has re-striped lanes and has announced more safety measures. these accidents have riders and their families demanding that more be done. >> just tough to see her laying there helpless. she's -- it's going to be months of not walking. non-weight-bearing recovery before she can even think about rehab. >> reporter: you see the flyers posted all over the neighborhood. some bike riders plan to come out and make their presence known and call for more protected bike lanes. they don't want any more incidents like what happened the past couple of weeks to happen to anyone else. live in center city, matt delucia, nbc10 news. >> thank you. today congressional republicans believe they are on the edge of a legislative victory. the house is expected to vote on a tax reform bill. the senate vote should happen soon after. the gop is confident the bill will pass after securing the vote of maine senator susan collins yesterday. senate democrats say they will fight the bill which they say favors the rich over middle-class families. demonstrator gathered in the atrium outside senate offices to protest the bill. as the crowd grew yesterday, the protest turned into a lie-in. police arrested more than 60 people involved. america first. president trump laid out a new national security strategy yesterday promising to build a border wall. he said any deals with other countries will only be made if they trade and the economy. we expect an update from police later this morning about a crash that happened in burlington county which killed two people. a car smashed into a pole and turned on its side yesterday in tabernacle. the crash happened just feet away from a learning center. police evacuated dozens of people there because of road closures. and we have an update on a story we brought you as breaking news yesterday morning. new york officials say a lit menorah that was left unattended sparked this fire in brooklyn. killed a mother and three children. the house fire in brooklyn early yesterday also left a father, his teenage son, and cousin in critical condition. a dozen other people including five firefighters had minor injuries. witnesses reported hearing a smoke alarm go off. the deadly fire happened during the sixth night of hanukkah. new jersey lawmakers say a new bill heading for governor chris christie's desk protects women whose role as a mother doesn't end when they arrive at the office. lawmakers gave final approval on the bill yesterday that maintains a woman's right to breast-feed or pump while at work. the bill also makes firing a woman for breast-feeding a civil rights violation. employers must also provide reasonable break times and facilities for breast-feeding. 4:37 now. targeting the jewish community. vandals commit acts of hate during the holiday
