Suspicious when we got here this morning, but now we know police have a suspect in mind and theyre looking for him right now. The New Castle County crime scene unit parked at the end of eider court in the Mallard Point area Wearing Masks and gloves. They went in and out through the garage. While neighbors left for work, they looked on shocked at what they were seeing. Thats scary. Its just scary. Knowing that nothings never happened around here and this happened right next door to you. Im shook up. Reporter on this small street the neighbors know each other, and they say a man lived here with his girlfriend. He was a nice guy. He was a nice guy. He never bothered nobody. Reporter investigators photographed the outside of the home. Theyre asking neighbors if they have any Video Surveillance as they build their case. Again, its not a random act. And the victim and the suspect are known to one another. And thats one of the things we do want to let any community know. Reporter but for carmen freeman, seeing homicide detectives next to her house is something she never expected. We have been here about nine years. Im shocked. Reporter and there are still many questions to be answered here. The name of the victim has not been released. We also dont know the specific relationship between the suspect that police have and the man who is found dead inside. Another question, how he was killed. Weve seen one person removed from the bus on a stretcher, however police tell us the injuries there were only minor. And Philadelphia Police and fire crews rescued a passenger who was trapped inside a car that overturned on Potter Street just after 3 30 this morning. Police tell us the driver was speeding, lost control of the car, the vehicle slid on the snow, hit a pole and the car overturned. Then police say a person who was on the scene broke the rear window and cut the drivers seat belt and that driver ran away. At this point police are trying to figure out who that driver is and why they were running. Radnor Township Police released surveillance photos they hope can help catch a suspect who robbed a 7eleven early this morning. The picture shows the person they say held up the store in brym mawr. You can see flurries falling in Chestnut Hill there from our video. Some areas could see a dusting of snow while others stayed completely dry. Much to the delight of many People Living there im sure. Really more impressive at the shore north of Atlantic City into ship bottom and toms river seeing light snow showers. Theres also a disabled bus around gerard avenue. The eastbound schuylkill is not your best bet. You can see with the Police Officers here on scene, everybody walking around, i would bet that they may close this off at any given point in the next couple of minutes just so they can turn this car back around or tow it out of the way. Well, today police in Delaware County will become the first in the world to be equipped with a new way of delivering the drug that reverses heroin overdoses. Feds are now allowing the drug to be given as a nasal spray. Before it had to be injected into patients. Its made by a company in Delaware County. Happening now, philadelphia is beginning an Outreach Campaign to help qualified City Residents apply for the earned income tax credit. Mayor jim kenny is kicking off the you earned it campaign right now at city hall. According to the irs the earned income tax credit can reduce taxes for working people with low or moderate incomes. But you have to apply for it. And the city estimates that 40,000 people in philadelphia who are eligible do not apply. Officer Jesse Hartnett walked into last nights fundraiser in northeast philadelphia. His message, im thankful. Officer hartnett has undergone several surgeries. You can see metal rods holding his arm in place. Thats where he was shot three times during an attempted assassination earlier this month. About two dozen nypd officers made the trip down for that fundraiser. To shake his hand, to say, hey, thank you very much. You know, for doing your job. Skiers in the pocono mountains enjoying some pretty nice conditions though theyre not seeing as much sunshine today as yesterday. And there has been some scattered light snow showers moving through the pocono mountains. Very light in philadelphia and some of the northern and western suburbs. The steadier snow is now in eastern new jersey. Its part of a system that we watch first thing this morning when we went on the air at 4 00. It was in central and western pennsylvania at that time. The futurecast showing by 3 00 this afternoon still could be some scattered showers in the area, mainly in central new jersey. An isolated shower north and west may blow through, but it will quickly fizzle as we go into the evening hours. Skies will clear out and thats going to make for a colder night tonight. So during the day youll see scattered showers, on and off, but no sticking expected. Not with temperatures like this. Upper 30s and low 40s. Northwesterly winds at 20 miles an hour today. Theyll die down tonight. And with clear skies well get colder temperatures. Tomorrow morning 22 degrees to start with. A high of 45 in the afternoon. A little bit warmer in the afternoon, so that begins the warming process that will have us in the 50s for sunday and potentially up to 60 degrees on monday. Thats after a morning low of 39 degrees. And as a cold front coming through may drop temperatures a little bit tuesday, but were right back in the 60s on wednesday. Here in the northeast part of the country officials have confirmed that the first case is in massachusetts has had its first case. A person in boston contracted zika while traveling abroad and is expected to make a full recovery. There are also three cases in new york city including a pregnant woman there. The mosquito transmitted virus could cause birth defects. The virus has not been found in the u. S. The reported cases are all in people who contracted it while abroad. Because of this though the fda is working to stop Blood Donations from people who have traveled to regions where the virus is prevalent. The three biggest u. S. Airline carriers are allowing customers to cancel or postpone those trips to areas affected by zika. Uniteds policy mentions travels to all areas by the cdc advisory, delta has a similar policy but customers must request or make changes by february. And american will give refund if they provide a doctors note stating they are unable to travel. Well, last weekends blizzard caused more problems than just messy roads and buried cars. The American Red Cross says the storm affected Blood Donations here in our area, and across the country. Take a look at this photo of red cross workers trying to deliver supplies in the snow. The snow was as high as the doors to their cars in some cases. Workers and volunteers were out during the storm setting up shelters. They also delivered food and blankets to those without power. And to people who had flood issues or forced out of their homes because of fire. And youre looking at video now supplied by the red cross of Blood Donation centers when theyre full. But during the winter storm here centers were empty. More than 30 blood drives had to be canceled in the philadelphia area alone. Thats a loss were told of thousands of pints of blood a day. And the storms didnt just hit here. They affected 20 states that saw little or no Blood Donations for most of the month. The Severe Weather over the past several days and really since january 1st nationwide has caused a really major blood shortage. So were trying to ensure that we have enough blood on the shelves to be able to continue to support our hospitals. We have to collect nationwide about 14,000 pints of blood each day. So we asked if hospitals here are seeing decreases in surgical procedures because of the blood shortage. Were told it is not at that level yet but the goal is to avoid that. Nbc 10s drew smith is live at the scene in new castle with the very latest on the investigation. Drew, youve spoken to investigators throughout the morning. Reporter yeah, and, katy, theyre still working here. You can see the crime scene truck is still parked in the driveway here. Theyve been coming in and out of that garage collecting evidence as well as taking photographs of the scene. Police have been here since late last night, around 10 00. Someone had called 911 concerned for the man who lives here. When police gave an update a couple hours ago, we asked if neighbors should be worried but were told this was not a random attack. The man who is now dead knew the person who police are now looking for as a suspect. Neighbors say a man lived here with his girlfriend. They thought he was a nice guy and just saw him walking wednesday. He would run in the mornings, whatever. Thats the last time i saw my husband saw him. Reporter right now police cant confirm exactly how this man died. We asked did they recover a murder weapon, they say they have not at this point. But they do know that suspect. Theyve declined to give his name out, but they say theyre searching for him right now. We also have not received the name of the victim who died here. They intensified a bit. You can see the clouds that have arrived at cape may. Now, cape may is completely dry, but just up the coast the snow is falling north of Atlantic City. Ship bottom seeing a few snowflakes. And inland its starting to mix in with some rain. This was expected as the temperatures have been climbing in spite of the scattered showers. Its just snow in upper montgomery and northern chester county, into the pocono mountains just scattered light stuff. Not expecting accumulation. Heres why. Temperatures are above freezing. We might have a dusting in pottstown but the rest of the area is going to see those showers move through and temperatures will stay above freezing through the afternoon. Then it gets cold tonight riding in on these clouds with some colder conditions and youll feel it tonight. You can see the gusts in the delaware. Happening now, the socalled affluenza teenager is scheduled for a Court Hearing in texas. 18yearold ethan couch arrived in dallas yesterday afternoon wearing handcuffs. Youll remember the teen and his mother fled to mexico last year after couch allegedly violated his probation. He was sentenced to probation for killing four people while driving drunk in 2013. His attorney successfully argued that his privileged lifestyle prevented him from knowing right from wrong. Several people are still holed up at a wildlife refuge in oregon after days of arrests and deadly confrontation with the fbi. Nbcs joe fryer is in burns, oregon, with this update. But we first want to warn you this video may be upsetting to some of our viewers. Reporter the occupation at the wildlife refuge is still not over with four activists holding out. They want assurances they wont be arrested if they leave. Meanwhile, the fbi has released unedited video of tuesdays deadly confrontation with the occupants leaders. The video taken from an fbi plane. According to the footage after authorities pulled over the group, a truck driven raced away. One minute later the truck veered left to avoid a roadblock, nearly hitting an agent. He quickly emerged from the truck with his hands in the air, but the fbi says on at least two occasions he reached for his jacket pocket. He was shot and killed. Authorities say there was a semiautomatic handgun in that pocket. The fbi says it wanted to lay out an honest, unfiltered view of what happened. In all 11 people tied with the occupation have now been arrested. Many are scheduled to appear in federal court later today. In burns, oregon, joe fryer, nbc news. Also in oregon, a landslide that started over a month ago continues to threaten two apartment complexes. Just last week a chunk of earth the size of a bus crashed down the hillside. And this morning were learning a jail employee may have helped three Inmates Escape from jail in Orange County, california. As nbcs Miguel Almaguer reports, a female worker had a relationship with one of the men. Reporter three inmates snaked through steel, used bed sheets as rope. A jailbreak right out of hollywood and now this twist. Nooshafarin ravaghi has been arrested. Its believed she provided critical planning tools that aided in their escape. Reporter the Sheriffs Department says the teacher had a relationship with an inmate providing him with google maps that may have shown him the route before the escape. The case, a striking similarity to upstate new yorks dana moore prison break. I did wrong. I deserve to be punished. Reporter where prison employee Joyce Mitchell admitted to having a, quote, friendship, with two murderers before helping them bust out of prison. We know there was some type of relationship that developed, how far it went and whether it was physical or not were still trying to confirm that. Reporter a week ago today, according to the sheriff bac last spotted sunday answering an auto sales ad test driving this van before speeding away. Investigators believe duong may be living in the van together. We dont think theyre outside of this tricounty area. If you arent getting enough sleep, you could be at higher risk for type 2 diabetes. Harvard researchers followed more than 130,000 women for the last ten years. They found women who had more trouble falling asleep and staying asleep were more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. It was especially true for women with other Health Problems like high blood pressure, obesity and depression. And a combination of diabetes and obesity during pregnancy may increase the risk a womans child will have autism. Scientists found the risk was almost four times higher among women who have both of those conditions. The exact reason for the link is not clear, but experts say its possible that inflammation, nutrients and hormones linked to diabetes and obesity may add to the autism risk. Well, they say your eyes are a window to your soul, but they could also reveal a health issue. Thats what happened to an arizona mom when she noticed something in the pictures she was taking op her 3monthold son. Nbcs vanessa ruiz explains. Ryder is the happiest baby youd ever meet. Reporter like all proud parents, andrea wanted to capture every moment of her babys life. Constantly taking pictures. And sometimes im like, okay, enough pictures. You know, we got to move on. Were just in the grocery store. Lets go. Reporter at 3 months old andrea noticed a reoccurring glow in ryders left eye. It looks almost like a flashlight in his eye. Reporter she chocked it up to a bad camera phone, then for christmas she got a nicer camera, and the glow kept appearing in the pictures. In the back of her mind andrea suspected something wasnt right. 150 a day and, you know, out of 145 his eye was glowing. Reporter ryder has down syndrome and cataracts are common. Andrea thought that would be the diagnosis. She was wrong. 24 hours after ryders 4month doctors appointment, the diagnosis turned into cancer. The glow in his left eye was the flash reflecting off of the tumor. You either remove the eye or treat right away. Reporter they chose to treat right away. Ryder is now receiving chemo treatment from a specialist in new york city. This type of treatment 99 success rate. Reporter if it wasnt for that early glimmer in his eye, this could be a very different story. Her advice to all parents, use that flash. If you see it once, take more. Reporter if the glow wont go, then its time to see the doctor. A picture is worth a thousand words, and you can be sure ryders parents will never look at a picture the same way ever again. Some of the cars are being recalled for a third time. Its all to fix a hood latch problem that could allow the hood to fly open while the cars are moving. The new recall involves altimas from the 2013 to 2015 model years. Nissan will notify owners and replace the hood latches for free starting in midfebruary. Well, earlier this week we told you how jp morgan is rolling out atms where you can use your smartphone instead of a debit card. Now two other banks have plans for cardless atms. Wells fargo and bank of america working to integrate apple pay into their atms. Their tech crunch report bans of america will unveil a cardless atm next month at select markets with a nationwide rollout by mid year. The women were supposed to be constructing two homes for families in need, but all the snow on the ground prevented that from happening today. Police in New Castle County, delaware, are searching for a suspect after they found a man murdered inside his home. Investigators say this was not a random act. Officers found the mans body late last night after someone called 911 concerned for him. Neighbors say he lived in the home on eider court with his girlfriend. Right now they cannot tell us how the man died or explain a motive. But investigators told nbc 10s drew smith the man knew the suspect and they are now looking for that individual.
