>> 160 workers and residents were inside the building when these flames started around 10:45 last night. you can see staff and volunteers helped get people out in wheelchairs, even in their beds and wrapped them up in blankets in that bitterly cold night. deanna is joining us. investigators say the evacuation was so chaotic, they are still tracking everyone down. >> reporter: they want to be careful and make sure they have accounted for everything. of course, we have learned that some of the residents here are not accounted for. take a look at what remains. some people inside tell us this fire began. it broke out last night. the damage here is so severe. investigators cannot get a look inside to see the damage or see how this fire started. >> it burns so quickly. police and firefighters seemed so surprise. the calls for help came one after another. >> when we got out we saw this black smoke. i took off running down the hallway started getting my residents out. tony struthers said she went door to door getting residents, coats, shoes, and walkers. >> your adrenaline and you do what you supposed to do. >> reporter: once outside, she saw how bad it was. flames so hot, one firefighters said he felt his helmet melt as he tried to get residents. >> i was outside with the cold. oh, my god, it was cold. >> reporter: the heat inside matched the unbearable cold outside. rescuers from 3:00 counties loaded those who couldn't help themselves on to buses and ambulances. more than two dozen were taken to the hospital and others were sitting in the cold. >> when i think of what people have lost now. it is their photographs and things they cherish so much. >> what investigators can't see yet is what is inside the building, what the fire didn't destroy or how it began in the first place. while a national team will arrive to try and examine the debris, we have learned police are still searching for some residents that have not been accounted for. westchester firefighters as well as firefighters from all over the area maintain a presence here. they will stay here all night. it is hopeful investigators can get inside and get a look at the building and at least be able to start to look for a cause sometime foam. reporting live, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. they described it as going through hell, a raging inferno swallowing up their home. forcing people out of their warm beds into the cold night. many need help. staff and neighbors rushed to help them. getting outside was only half the battle. the bone-chilling cold set in. >> oh, my god, it was cold. >> 27 people were taken to the hospital. right now, 17 are still in the hospital. the personal care facility where this fire started is fully licensed and in good standing with the state. the nbc 10i7b vest gators found the nursing home on the same property has recently been sanctioned and cited by state watch dogs. several of those citations involved fire safety concerns and they are be the first to know any new information we get. a teenager charged with killing a stranger. his victim, a house sitter, working in a south jersey home where he used to live. tonight, investigators tell us the 19-year-old suspect got out of jail just one day before he murdered his mother. the victim's 5-year-old child was with her inside the home when she was killed. cydney long spoke to the victim's family tonight. >> reporter: a sneaker footprint on the back door, dna evidence on the victim's shirt and video of 19-year-old brandon wilson on hopkins street in woodbury. that's what led investigators to charge him with murder. >> they executed approximately 30 search warrants, various residents as well as electronic device. >> reporter: all proof that wilson killed shawnique by hitting her in the head. she was watching two kids. wilson used to live in that home as a foster child. his motive was burglary. her body was upstairs. the little boys in school uniforms notified neighbors that she was hurt. >> she is never forgotten. we always want to always remember her and love her. i am going to do everything i can to make sure that my grandson lives a normal life. >> reporter: wilson is charged with first-degree murder, possession of a weapon as well as hindering apprehension. he called his parents and asked them to dispose of a pair of sneakers that he was wearing when he kicked in the back door. >> physical evidence linking the defendant to the crime was found on an outside window, as well as the victim's shirt and a piece of gym equipment that was used in the murder. >> wilson had only been released the day before carter's death. he is in the cape may coupenty jail as they prepare for their first thanksgiving without her. >> every sunday, i take her flowers to her grave site. the first time was hard. this sunday, i get to tell her some good news. >> reporter: cydney long, nbc news 10 news. chill wy start to this busy holiday weekend. >> weekend. new at 6:00, thousands of college students won't have to worry about their school closing. a short time ago, cheney university received another year of accreditation. the oldest historically black college in the country has been on the brink of closure. today, the board justified its decision by saying the university has made significant progress. there will be another review next september. the philadelphia school district is facing a lawsuit because of this video here. >> whoa, whoa, whoa. >> it appears to show a school officer punching a teenager as nbc 10's aundrea cline-thomas shows us, that officer had been trying to break up a fight with two girls before he seems to turn on someone else. >> stop, stop. >> reporter: civil rights attorney, riley ross, says his teenage client was outside of the kensington health and science academy when his girlfriend got into a fight. a school district officer appears to try to break up the brawl. >> my client walks up. as you saw quickly, he says, yo, yo, yo, what's going on. as his client walks up, the officer appears to turn around and repeatedly punched the teenage boy. the crowd erupts. >> as you can see, he is standing over the top of them now. my client is clearly in a fetal position over the ground. the officer stands over the top of him, punches him, kicks him. >> officer told police the teenager approached him from behind and grabbed him and punched him in the head. >> he stopped, looked at my client and made an assessment and then hit him. >> the school district declined to comment, citing pending litigation. they say the officer is still working in the school. aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. philadelphia police are looking for up to a dozen people who used a hammer, smoke bomb and red paint to vandalize two police cruisers and a building. it happened around 11:00 last night. one car had a hammer sticking out of the windshield. no one was hurt. new video at 6:00 shows a driver passing a school bus barely missing children who were trying to get on board. plymouth township police are looking for this car. you can see that the driver doesn't stop for the bus's flashing red likghts an the car barely avoids hitting children on the sidewalk. fortunately, no children were hurt. new numbers show more families in philadelphia are going hungry. nbc 10 was in center city where local leaders released a new report on hunger. that report shows more than 300,000 people in philadelphia struggled with hunger. necessary about 1 in 5. those issuing the report are calling on
