opening ceremony just hours away, nbc 10 is live in rio for all the olympic excitement. good evening. i'm jacqueline london coming to you live from rio de janeiro, brazil, as we get ready for the opening ceremony, which is taking place tomorrow night. take a look behind me. this is where the aquatic center is located. and as night is falling, it is getting more illuminated with blue lights. just a beautiful picturesque scene in rio de janeiro, brazil. coming up, we're going to talk to numerous athletes who are from our area, from the delaware valley, and they are here in rio trying to compete, including kelsey whirl, who will swim the 50-meter butterfly -- 100-meter butterfly and she does it in under 50 seconds. the first time a woman has ever done that. that is so fast. we look forward to bringing you full coverage from opening to the closing ceremonies. reporting live from rio, back to you, keith and rosemary. >> jacqueline, thank you so much for that. see you shortly. now to our top story. an elevator flies into the air with somebody still inside. >> the force actually sent debris flying, people inside said it sounded like an explosion. >> nbc 10's cydney long is outside the criminal justice center where this all happened. cydney, two people hurt, one with critical injuries. talk to us about how they're doing at this moment. >> reporter: rosemary, both victims were in separate elevators that share the same shaft, when they were hurt earlier this morning. one was a sheriff's deputy. he is in critical condition and undergoing surgery for numerous broken bones. the female victim was talking as she was wheeled on a stretcher into the ambulance. >> fell down on top of the elevator. it exploded. i have no idea. >> reporter: rescued from an employee elevator on the first floor, clerk beverly smith said she started on the fourth. >> what did you hear? >> explosion. that's all i can tell you. >> reporter: that's when falling debris, according to philadelphia's deputy fire commissioner, jesse wilson, said came loose. an apparent structural failure of another elevator in a side by side shaft broke through the ceiling and came crumbling down. >> the debris from that failure fell down this common shaft, and then hit the second elevator. >> reporter: sheriff joe williams said if not for the woman rescued first, they would not have known right away that sergeant paul oh weapons was trapped in the elevator higher up. >> if she had not got hurt we wouldn't have known he got stuck in the elevator at the 13th floor. >> reporter: the courthouse was quickly evacuated. >> immediately hit the box. and it was hard. and they're supposed to have security to keep it from stopping. that thing went straight down. >> reporter: the department of labor and industry will now have to determine the mechanics of what failed. fire officials did quickly rule out any incident of an explosion. >> it was a noise of the malfunction of the elevator. it wasn't an explosion. so that part, we're sure of. >> reporter: it will not open again until tomorrow morning with that bank of elevators, and perhaps others that were inspected today off limits. we're told that the female victim, beverly smith, broke down in tears in the e.r. today when she learned that the deputy suffered more injuries than she did. but she has since been released from the hospital. live in center city, i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. now to the decision 2016. hillary clinton's push for pennsylvania appears to be working. at least for now. a new franklin and marshall poll found the democrat with a double-digit lead over her rival donald trump. she has 49% support to trump's just 38%. sinking poll numbers are just one problem trump's dealing with as he tries to get his campaign back on track tonight. a day after talk of a possible intervention by his fellow republicans. trump is getting a new round of support now from his own party. nbc's scott mcfarland has the story. >> reporter: donald trump packs an auditorium in maine today before a swing to the battleground states. this week he's been battling some in his own party, including over his refusal to endorse house speaker paul ryan's reelection. today since key republicans rallied behind trump, including ryan himself who said he continues to support trump's election. >> the voters, he won the delegates. he won the thing fair and square. it's just that simple. >> reporter: in north carolina, vice presidential nominee mike pence defended his running mate when an 11-year-old asked if pence's job was to clean up the candidate's miscue? >> i couldn't be more proud to stand with donald trump. and we are shoulder to shoulder. >> reporter: new polls show hillary clinton stretching her lead, including in several swing states. but republicans say three months remain for trump to recover. >> this is a fight that we still think is worth fighting. we just need donald trump to get on our page right now to make this thing happen. >> reporter: clinton accused trump of outsourcing jobs. >> he's not put americans to work. he's imported foreign workers instead of hiring americans. >> reporter: republicans want trump to target clinton more aggressively and avoid other controversial topics. about reports of a possible gop intervention with the trump campaign? a spokesman said it's pure fiction. and rudy giuliani said to be one of the people considering doing the intervening said it's not going to happen. scott mcfarland, nbc news, washington. they may be associated with the republican party, but local party leaders say they are defecting, refusing to be associated with the nominee donald trump. a committee leader in berks county has resigned his post with the party and said he won't support any candidate that supports trump. he tells nbc 10's deanna durante he wants to see a third party conservative emerge and get on the ballot. >> what attracted me to the party in the first place were the conservative ideals of its platform. and like hillary clinton, donald trump is not only not fit for the presidency, he doesn't share those conservative beliefs. >> nbc 10 also talked to u.s. representative charlie dent. the allentown republican said trump's political views and recent attacks on families and john mccain are only a part of why he won't support trump. it sounds like it could be something out of a martin scorsese movie. nearly four dozen suspects including the reported mafia boss in philadelphia were arrested today. it's all part of a massive investigation involving new york police and the fbi. members of numerous crime families were among those arrested. they're accused of extortion, loan sharking, sports gambling, fraud, firearms trafficking, and arson. joey "skinny" morelynno is accused of committing health care fraud. investigators say he and another man convinced corrupt doctors to bill insurers for unnecessary and excessive prescriptions in exchange for kickbacks. the longtime lawyer for the mob boss declined to comment on the allegations. >> we were able to arrest 46 members of numerous crime families. >> those arrests came one day after the arrest of john gote jr. he's accused of bei ining invol in a prescription drug ring. the road to rio is nearing its home stretch. we are just a little more than 24 hours away from the opening ceremony. >> nbc 10 is the only place to see all the action. and nbc 10's jacqueline london is live tonight in rio. jacqueline, lots of anticipation before the opening ceremony tomorrow night. >> reporter: everyone always gets so excited with the opening ceremony that takes place. there are certain ones that probably pop up in your head, your favorites. hopefully the one tomorrow night here in rio de janeiro will be on your list very soon of your favorites for the opening ceremony. we are here in the olympic park. take a look behind me. the olympic rings back there are getting so much attention. and you see the olympic rings at different places here in rio. at the olympic village and also on copacabana beach. everyone trying to get the perfect picture with it as a memory. i do want to tell you about security. of course, security is so important. in terms of the personnel, authorities are ramping up security around rio, with about 85,000 security officers deployed around the city. barricades now line the streets along copacabana beach. the olympic flame, you always love to see it being carried, it continued its journey through rio today. brazilian surfer rico sousa surfs off the rio coast carrying the torch. it will plas through le bland, ipanima and copacabana today. the opening ceremony takes place tomorrow night. we're getting our first look at the rio olympic medals. the medals were created with sustainability in mind. the gold medal was made from gold, extracted without the use of mercury. and the silver and bronze medals were produced using 30% recycled materials. if you can't wait until the opening ceremony, we have a full night of olympic coverage ahead on nbc 10. we want to tell you what you can look forward to, on tv tonight, if you just can't get enough of the olympics. this evening at 7:30, "olympic zone." and we take a look at how carli lloyd turned adversity into triumph after finding herself benched at the summer games four years ago. that, and much more at 7:30 on the "olympic zone." that's followed by a rio olympics preview. including an introduction to the host city. guests include the very decorated michael phelps, and the u.s. women's gymnastics team, one of those members is from our area. we'll tell you about her a little bit later. that is at 8:00 tonight. the opening ceremony, again, is tomorrow. nbc 10 is the only place to see it. coverage begins at 7:30 on friday night. tomorrow at this hour, the marcanan stadium will be filling up with athletes, spectators, tourists who are just so excited for the olympics to begin and to get a glimpse of it all. many of those athletes from our area, and we're looking forward to bringing you behind-the-scenes looks at their training, and what they're going through to try to get 5:00. let me see your hands. >> they say practice makes perfect. but for police officers, it could also save lives. now, a new tool is helping officers across new jersey improve their response to life-threatening risks. we get an inside look coming up at 5:00. whenthe state made aers, commitment to us. i knew that i wasn't going to make a fortune. but i would have a secure pension plan when i retired. each and every one of us made that contribution from every paycheck we ever earned. they've been negligent in their responsibility over the years of not funding this pension the way it should have been funded. they have made a promise, they've made a commitment, and they need to stick to it. there we go. if you've been here near the schuylkill river lately, you may have noticed spots on the green on the water. we decided to find out what's going on. the philly water department said it's something called duck weed. a free-floating plant that grows in slow-flowing areas of the river. the recent rains caused it to break up and head toward the dam. we're told it's not harmful. a water quality test is under way. the district is retesting the drinking water at 40 schools throughout philadelphia. the project is expected to take about four months. and it will be an independent state lab that will be doing the testing. we turn to a follow-up investigation at nbc 10. now considering selling its troubled sewer system. >> the nbc 10 investigators uncovered its history of problems and how neighbors could be on the hook for fixing them. >> that's right. mitch blocker is following these details and impact. >> our initial investigation found that for 20 years, cheltenham township knew their sewer system needed repairs. during that time we found several sewer overflows that actually flowed into creeks flowing down to philadelphia. they were fined hundreds of thousands of dollars because of these spills. commissioners estimate it would cost between $70 million and $80 million to fix the sewer. one commissioner floated the idea that homeowners could be on the hook for as much as $10,000 to reconnect to that sewer system. at this point, the township is weighing its options and getting more information about how selling that century-old sewer system could actually save money. i did talk to one commissioner who said that the sale is just one of several options that they are now considering. the commissioner would not say which way they are leaning. there is another meeting that is scheduled in september 11th. you can bet we will continue to follow it. guys? >> mitch blocker reporting for us. thank you, mitch. during the dnc, more than 11,000 pounds of food was rescued. instead of throwing it out, it was delivered to local shelters and pantries. then it was called operation food rescue. now it's an app called food connect. here's how it works. use the app to schedule a vendor to pick up, wrap up and deliver the food to where it's needed most. it's a cooperation with anti-hunger organizations, the philadelphia coalition against hunger and the share food program. because it's considered a donation, it is tax deductible. to a huge help to kids in need, will soon head back to the classrooms. citizens bank donated $50,000 to cradles to crayons. volunteers spent the day filling backpacks with notebooks, folders, pencils, everything a kid needs to be prepared for school. cradles to crayons hopes to give out 30,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to kids this year. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> whether fishing, jogging or just taking a stroll today, it was a great day to get outside. nbc 10 at bellview state park in north wilmington. a lot of people taking advantage of the cooler temperatures. this morning it was cool. this afternoon it did warm up. it was still fairly comfortable all because the humidity was at a very comfortable level. take a look outside right now. still dry, very comfortable this evening. if you look at your seven-day forecast, you'll notice temperatures at the bottom of the screen for you will be going up into the weekend. and we have weekend thunderstorms in the forecast, too. here's a look at your neighborhood temperatures right now. we're in the low 80s through parts of the area. wilmington coming in at 83. our pennsylvania neighborhoods, look at the shore temperatures, 79 upper township. cape may point 77. mays landing coming in at 83 degrees. atlantic city 77. so very comfortable along the shore. it's really going to stay nice this weekend, too, aside from the rain in the forecast. we're nice and dry right now. if we take a wider view, you notice there's rain off to the west moving in this direction. and we'll be seeing that moving in to start the weekend. not the entire weekend, though. tonight we stay dry. tomorrow, we do stay dry. still going to be mostly sunny day. there's friday, 3:30 in the afternoon. temperatures will be hotter tomorrow. closer to 90 degrees. and it will be more humid. you'll notice that. then we go into saturday, more clouds around early in the day saturday. if you're in the poconos, or lehigh valley, you have a better chance of seeing showers and storms. through the philadelphia area, this is closer to lunchtime or shortly after. if you're in south jersey or delaware, you'll mainly see scattered showers and storms later in the afternoon on saturday. clearing out saturday night. we go into sunday, and sunday is actually going to be a nice day. the humidity will start to drop off again. until that, though, we're dealing with the storms and humidity for the first half of the weekend. philadelphia, tomorrow 87 and sunny. but humid. by saturday, 92 and humid. scattered storms. by sunday, 88 degrees. really nice. if you're in the lehigh valley tomorrow, 84, sunny. by saturday we'll be dealing with earlier thunderstorms. 90 for the high there. by sunday, 84 and sunny. for new jersey and along the shore, temperatures by tomorrow will be mostly around 80 degrees at the shore, mid-80s in new jersey. hotter saturday with scattered afternoon thunderstorms, drier on sunday. if you're in delaware, expect afternoon storms saturday. temperature around 92. by sunday we're drying out. lower humidity. if you're heading to the shore or delaware beaches, we'll see the afternoon late day thunderstorms. not the first half of check.org put those claims to the test. and with new cases of the zika virus popping up in the united states, there are growing concerns among pregnant women. how doctors and health officials are our spanish language sister station telemundo 62 has more from atlantic city. >> reporter: on the streets, or on the boardwalk, these red shirt union workers are making their presence heard even louder than before after getting word that the trump taj mahal is shutting down. >> it would be nice if i would have gotten to work a little longer. >> reporter: she was hired two days before the strike started at the beginning of july, after being unemployed for six months. she said it's time to start looking for a job again. but not before making some noise. >> we're fighting a big fight for everybody. if we go without health care, or we give up on what we're striving for -- >> we've had to clean um carl icahn's mess before. he closed the atlantic club and the plaza in 2015. we had to help those workers. >> reporter: the analysts say the casino revenue has stabilized and doubt more property closures will happen unless the wild card shows up. it could prompt as many as three local casinos to close. until then, the city has also stepped up to offer a helping hand to these folks. >> our focus is not so much training individuals, because most of these individuals are ready anyway. we go around to businesses and the chamber has 700 member businesses. we informed them about the various hiring incentives that the department of labor offers. >> reporter: these men and women say it's all about staying together. >> i'm not worried, and i'm not upset about this. i just have faith in my union. >> i'm hoping that the union will help me find placement when it closes. >> reporter: we reached out to the taj mahal but did not hear back from them. we're told there is a union training center available for these folks if needed. but we're told job offers have already started coming in from around the region. in atlantic city, nbc 10 news. more than $23 million worth of cocaine is now off the streets of philadelphia. that is the announcement pennsylvania attorney general kathleen cane made today. authorities arrested six people part of a drug ring that smuggled cocaine from puerto rico and the dominican republic to the united states. they said they found more than 500 pounds of cocaine in philly at a warehouse and also in two cars. it's one of the largest drug seizures that they've made in years. >> we are targeting these drug trafficking organizations who are bringing large amounts of poisons into our streets and distributing onto the streets of philadelphia and the vicinity. >> the suspects are all behind bars with bail set at $1 million or more. atlantic city is one step closer to having one of its biggest and most valuable eye sores developed. they received two bids for the sprawling former airport bader field. the cash-strapped city is selling the site to bring in much-needed money. no word yet on who submitted the bids or what kind every projects have been proposed. they'll now be evaluated by city leaders. officials will also make their decision based on which proposal is best for atlantic city's future. delaware's indian tribe is eligible for services. the action acknowledges the tribe's history and culture which is centered in kent county. the road to rio is closing in on tomorrow night's opening ceremony. we're just one day away, actually, make that 26 hours to be exact from the start of the 2016 olympic games. guess what, nbc 10 has your all-access pass to the rio games. >> who's counting? >> we are. jacqueline london joins us live from rio. jacqueline, describe to us where you are in relation to the olympic venues. >> reporter: i am standing in the main olympic park. a little while ago we showed you the olympic rings, set up as a structure behind that. you saw the aquatic center. right now i want you to take a look at this gorgeous stadium behind me draped in yellow and orange. that is the tennis stadium. that is where you'll see djokovic, nadal, venus and serena all playing here. it is a beautiful complex that will be filled with athletes very shortly. we can tell you that right now i am in baja where all of the other venus are taking place. the copacabana beach is about an hour away from here. you always hear about the popular copacabana beach. that is where beach volleyball will take place. it's also where i met some very familiar faces. today the "today" show goes to the beach. cope a ka pan a beach, the show on the road in rio. you see opening ceremonies from the spectacle of beijing, to the quirkiness of london. what does rio have to do to rise to the occasion? i know you know a little bit about what's happening. >> can i just say? i've done several of the opening ceremonies. i'm really excited to get to do it with hoda because it's her first. i always like to experience something alongside someone who is still seeing the awe of it. >> rehearsals are crazy. i wish i could tell you everything. i wish i could let it out. not even a tiny morsel. >> reporter: what is far from a secret? the four-letter "z" word. the headlines are zika that are part of the story. >> but the real story is these guys coming here and having an experience that might be life changing for them and their countries. there's something about this being out here in the sun-splashed place with people from countries all over the world. >> reporter: united in rio. and in the broadcast booth with matt and meredith. >> yes. that's a hot drink. >> reporter: yes, hoda said she definitely loves that very strong drink, which is so popular here, and what everyone talks about. we can also tell you that in talking to matt and hoda, they would not give me one secret at all as to what to expect from the opening ceremony. but what they did say is that it's mind-blowing, it's a spectacle, and it is what you think would be representative here in rio de janeiro, brazil, a party, one big party that will have you watching and then leave you with such a good feeling inside. of course, when you meet hoda kotb, you have to do a little singing with her. if you watch the "today" show, you know hoda is a big fan of music. and her playlist, well, all you have to do is go to my facebook fan page and there, i did a little singing with hoda kotb. what else would you say when you're on copacabana beach? it's not all quite true. nbc 10's denise nakano has their findings. >> i'm afraid the election's going to be rigged, i have to be honest. >> reporter: trump said he's worried about a rigged general election, where precincts who nobody voted for republicans in 2012. fact check.org said there were several dozens precincts in philadelphia and cleveland where barack obama won virtually every vote. but it wasn't because of voter fraud. >> if you look at those districts, the demographics of them, they were urban districts, almost entirely registered democrat. and the experts that we talked to said that it's not only possible, but probable that you would have some districts where that would be the case. >> reporter: on another sunday morning show, clinton defended a claim she's made several times on the campaign trail. that there was no classified materials among the e-mails she sent and received using a personal e-mail account when she was secretary of state. and that fbi director james comey backed her up when he testified before congress in july. >> what i said is consistent with what i have told the american people. >> reporter: fact check.org said clinton is parsing comey's words. >> when he said that she had not lied, he had said what she said to the fbi. he was not commenting on her public comments about sending or receiving classified information. and in fact, the evidence that the fbi uncovered contradicted that. in fact, they said about 2,000 of her e-mails were classified. most of them retroactively. there's about 110 of them he said were classified at the typical this time of year. but we are going to see those temperatures get a little more likely for this time of the year. also above normal for this time of the year too. a little below average for today, but very comfortable. i don't think anyone's complaining about that. if you look at the seven-day at the bottom of your screen, you see we start to heat back into the 90s for part of this weekend. but also into next week. temperatures through the area, mostly around 80 degrees. look at the philadelphia neighborhoods currently, 85 degrees germantown, 82 in rittenhouse. 86 degrees in graduate hospital. 86 fox chase. if you're in bustleton, temperature 83 degrees. we'll be a little hotter tomorrow and even as we go into the start of your weekend. now, the heat and humidity will both be going up tomorrow, and for saturday. so take a look at what it's going to feel like. as we look at the scale from nice to oppressive with high humidity, tomorrow it's going to creep up a little bit. today is more like a comfortable level. it is creeping up to humid tomorrow. very humid as we go into saturday. by sunday, humidity is going to take a bigger drop. you're going to notice it. sunday's going to feel pretty pleasant. especially as we go into monday. humidity dropping a little bit more. and then by tuesday, it starts to creep up a bit. you'll be noticing swings in the humidity. but a more comfortable level by the end of the weekend. thunderstorms moving in as we go from saturday into saturday afternoon. mostly saturday late morning through saturday afternoon. i'll show you the timing in a second. aside from that, we're also looking at more 90-degree temperatures as we go into next week. we're talking about another possible heat wave in the forecast. this is future weather here. tonight we're going to stay dry. tomorrow, we stay dry to end out the week. your friday is looking about mostly sunny. this is 4:00 p.m. no rain just yet. it will be hotter and more humid. as we go into saturday, more humid, and more heat. we see the approach of some showers by 11:00 a.m. possibly lehigh valley, in the poconos. northern delaware, up to trenton by about 2:30 afternoon, around that general time frame, in the later afternoon and evening heading toward the shore and some of the delaware beaches. we'll be watching that very closely. saturday night it clears out and sunday is looking very nice. sunday does definitely look like the better day out of the weekend. 87 degrees if you're in fairmount. 84 in reading. this is a little bit hotter than today. avalon about 79 degrees. if you're in dover, expect 83 and sunny skies tomorrow. going into the weekend, for everybody, we'll be around the low 90s for most areas. if you're at the shore, expect the mid-08s by sunday. more sunshine. temperatures more like the mid to upper 80s. not as hot or humid on sunday of the that's going to be the driest day out of the weekend. if you're heading to brigantine this weekend, thunderstorms by sunday. sunny, 86 degrees. in wildwood, expect late day storms saturday. temperatures mid-80les. by sunday, clearing, sunny, 84 degrees, feeling drier. and in cape may saturday afternoon and late day thunderstorms, 89 degrees. sunday we're looking more like the mid-80s and nice and sunny. your ten-day forecast shows the two different weekend days, low 90s saturday, upper 08s on sunday. more comfortable especially as we go into monday with the humidity. look at the heat wave possible. by wednesday, low 90s. thursday, by friday, still in the 90s potentially. and maybe even into next week. where we do have more thunderstorm chances in the forecast. so yes, we're talking about the heat going into the weekend. even more heat as we go into next the american woman murdered in a stabbing spree in london last night. darlene horton of florida was killed and five other people were hurt in the knife attack. it happened in the city's russell square neighborhood. horton is the wife of a florida state university professor. the 19-year-old suspect is a norwegian national of somali origin. investigators say he has mental health issues, but shows no
