on to the power lines over there, that they will come and they will have to remove those branchs so they can remove the power lines. first they have to complete a job just a few blocks away. but we 10. >> what are you seeing from up there? >> reporter: we were all over pennsylvania showing some downed trees and wires. what i want to take you through now is the cherry hill mall. this is the site of what was an auto show. the tents clearly blew over in that strong storm. you can still see some of the cars that were lined up beneath those tents. some serious damage. door ripped off the van. wind shield shattered. we've seen that in a couple locations as we zoom outie cherry mill mall. just the aftermath of some of the storm damage. that's the latest from sky force 10. mitch blacher, nbc 10 news. today's fast moving storm reeked havoc across parts of delaware. downed power lines and trees up and down silver side road in north wilmington. delaware viewers sent us this photo of a tree on a car in new castle. the storm had vendors at the greek festival bracing for impact. >> it was pretty windy, pretty scary. the tent was shaking. >> a lot of wind. made things really exciting here. >> today's storm just a drop in the bucket for some vendors who say they have seen it all in 41 years at the festival. the storms also put amtrak service on hold this afternoon. skies force 10 over north philly where downed wires stopped this train on its tracks. service was eventually restored, but there has been residual delays. riders should still expect some delays. the storm still has a lot of people in the dark. peco is reporting about 34,000 customers without power. pse and g says arm 19,500 are without power. and ac electric, 8,000 out thinks in their service region. the storms moved fast across the region, but now it seems to have cleared up. temperatures are going down. >> eithlet's go to glenn "hurri" schwartz for a closer look. >> things change very rapidly during the day. we started off with sunshine, stormsi harrisburg at 9:00 and they raced through the area. wind gusts at 50 miles per hour in many places. as high as 72-mile-per-hour gusts. this is the current radar. you don't see any showers. so things will be drying up for this evening. they're cooling down though, only 63 degrees in some of the p.a. suburb. we do have a lot of sunshine. lehigh valley, some clouds at 64. so it is definitely a lot cooler than it's been lately. now, the temperature drops to about 60 at 10:00 p.m. and look at the p.a. suburbs for tomorrow morning, 48 degrees. and a little bit of wind on top of that. lehigh valley, 48 degrees. 52 delaware, much of new jersey in the low to mid-50s. we'll see when it will warm up and when the next storms are coming in just a few minutes. more murder outside a mcdonald's. officers found the body of a 24-year-old man in a drive through lane of this mcdonald's on west main street just before midnight. the victim was shot about 10 times. witnesses say two men were chasing him and opened fire. and investigators want anyone with any information to contact them. delaware state police needed your help identifying a man wanted for inappropriately touching two women as a dover walmart. police and i it happened last thursday at around 3:30 in the morning at the store on jerome drive. he may be driving a tan or gold suv. it if you have any information, you're asked to contact police. philadelphia residents will start paying more for water beginning in july. the city's water department is raising rates july 1 by $3.44. and it will increase again next year by $3.18. that means a typical monthly bill will be just over $70 on july 1st, next year it will increase to $74. the water department wanted more of an increase, but the recently formed water sewer and storm water rate board said no way. the water department has not raised rates since 2014. a fisherman's unusual find is making its way to the jersey shore. where it was pennsylvania governor tom wolf. their mission, to combat sexual assaults on college campuses. jay wright joined the governor in harrisburg today to talk about that campaign called east on us p.a. it invites everyone to help stop sex assaults at colleges and universities. >> i'm determined to make pennsylvania a shining example to the rest of the world as to what a committed citizenry can do to make our world better. it's truly on all of us to accomplish this. it's all of our jobs. so let's get to work. >> pennsylvania is the first state in the country to launch the campaign. and this effort comes amid the growing youts rageoff a sexual assault state at stanford university. freshman brock turner was sentenced to six months in prison. prosecutors had recommended six years. stanford university says it did everything within its power to assure that justice was served in this case before the assault new students were given information and training on how to prevent sexual violence. after the assault, the school banned turner from campus and it offered counseling to the victim who was not a student. most of the outrage over this case has been directed at the judge. critics say that the six month sentence was too lenient. nearly half a million people have now signed a petition to recall that judge. you can read more about the story right now on the nbc 10 app including a you powerful statement from the victim that she read to her attacker in court. mothers against drunk driving and other groups are celebrating what it calls life saving legislation in pennsylvania. families of drunk driving victims lauded the fact pennsylvania passed a new interlock i go nice play that requires first time dui offenders to check for alcohol on your breath. the device won't allow the car to start it if the driver has been drinking. previously it was only for multiple d chui offenders. the defense in the chaka fattah trial rested this afternoon. deanna durante joins us with the very latest. one of the defense's final witnesses was another big name in politics. >> reporter: yes, former philadelphia mayor and pennsylvania governor ed rendell who made it clear to me after he got off the witness stand that he was here as a supporter of one of the congressman fattah's co-defendants. >> it's what the allegations against the congressman, if they are true, he's properly prosecuted and he should go to jail. >> reporter: he has strong feelings about the case the government is putting forward against congress made chaka fattah. >> they're serious charges. he took taxpayers money and used it for campaigning and all sorts of chicanery. if it's true, it's horrible. >> reporter: but opposes the government's case against herbert stre herbert vederman, a man who helped him and other politicians raise money for election bids. prosecutors paint vederman as hungry enough for an ambassador ship that he bribed fattah. >> he didn't give him a little bit of money, to get an am bass core ship, that's ridiculous. >> reporter: rendell himself made calls on vederman's behalf on both the clinton and obama administration. . >> i believe as i said on the stand that he felt that fattah were holding the car for him. >> reporter: prosecutors having aed that that car was ilgtsed, repaired and drifsh after the alleged sale. rendell said he was not made aware of 9 allegations. fattah did not have any comment. deand thna did yourit durante, . and it was the scene a few hours ago outside 30th street station. that relentless rain came down in buckets. and this was what it sounded like in pennsylvania when the winds whipped through montgomery county. this is the philadelphia vehicle cricket club. >> still on the breezy side, but at least we have dry conditions now and we'll have a lot of sunshine next couple days to dry things up. this is the way started today and as we told you, it was going to be nice and quiet for the morning rush and fairly quiet for the afternoon rush. but it was in between that we would have these problems. and here it came. it was moving eastward at 40, 50 miles per hour. strong winds came down in the middle of those storms. and at noontime, this was the line coming right through from the northern suburbs through philadelphia and into new jersey. numerous reports of gusts over 50 miles per hour. and now we're left with nothing on the radar pretty much. these dots indicate where the severe storm reports came from. and not many north and west of philadelphia. took a while for the system to intensify once it did, it created some pretty strong wind gusts. 72 miles per hour, that is the strongest wind gust we found upper deerfield in cumberland county. that is near hurricane-force. 66 miles an hour the next biggest gust long beach township in ocean county. and in a lot places between 55 and 65 miles an hour. that's bringing in cooler weather and so we'll see that over the next couple of days. it was 8 # yesterday. it's been even warmer than p that lately. but only 73 today. 76 tomorrow. even with sunshine. and then 80 on friday. now, the next rain that we'll get and we don't really need any, it's been awful wet, the month of may was extremely wet. and we'll get a couple days to dry out. nothing thursday, nothing friday. but another system coming down from the great lakes moving fast. that means probably have gusty winds with it. and there it is, that is 2:00 saturday afternoon. so we're dry for most of the day and at the shore, delaware beaches we're dry pretty much all day. but that stuff's got to come through and it's mostly coming through on saturday night for many of us. for tonight, we're talking about p its getting down in the 40s in in some places. easton at 46. 49 in reading. and then with sunshine, we're only getting in to the mid-70s. atlantic city, 77 tomorrow because it will be a land breeze. strong west wind, we'll be seeing strong gusts. rehoboth beach also with a land breeze. and that means that the temperature at the shore is the same or even higher than what we'll see in philadelphia tomorrow. but as the wind shifts into the seabreeze, look at the difference between the shore and philadelphia on saturday. at the shore, i think it's saturday night, it's right in the middle between saturday and sunday when we will be seeing those thunderstorms at the shore. so most of the weekend is looking okay. full 10 day forecast coming up a little later. could it be a game changer in the fight against cancer? some doctors say it's not where the cancer is available. >> the foundation raised $11,000 to make today's donation possible. scientists have discovered new information that could help in the fight against cancer. >> they think it's less important where cancer is located on your body and more so if it has a certain mutation. anne thompson is working on this story and joins us now with a closer look. thank you so much for taking the time. these scientists are looking at the brca gene in particular, plane associate that with breast cancer. but we're now learning that this can affect a much broader population. >> reporter: absolutely. denise, keith, thanks for having me. one of the messages that we're trying to get across tonight in our story is that this is not a story men should tune out. the brca gene mutation is associated with higher risk of breast and ovarian cancer in women, but it's also posing a risk for men. then can carry the gene mutation and if it they do, they are at higher risk for pancreatic or prostate cancer as well as colon cancer and melanoma. so it's an issue that both sexes have to pay attention to. >> so what can patients do to find out if they have the hugh tags? >> reporter: well, first of all, you need to get screened. and for example if you're diagnosed with breast cancer or someone in your family has been diagnosed with breast cancer, often you get this genetic testing. if it comes back positive, then the question is do your other family members have it. and you will see in tonight's story that this doctor who founded a clinic out this california that deals solely with patients who have the brca gene mutation, she found out she had the genetic mutation, she had her father tested, he developed an kree attpancreatic and she told his doctors and it changed his treatment and it made a remarkable difference in his treatment that you'll see tonight. and that's the important thing about this mutation. if you have it, it can lead to those targeted therapies that we hear so much about through a water fall. and umbrellas were a must in this parking lot in cherry hill. at t they made a mad dash to their car. >> a sight that a homeowner never wanted to see. a massive tree uprooted in front of his home on willow dale drive. you can see the tree resting on the outside of the home with visible damage to the gutters. a building inspector was called out to assess the overall damage. hill. this is a tree down into a home, you can see some of roots down into the front of that home. can't rely see if there is much damage on the house, there was a crew on the here, but they seem to a left. and about a quarter mile away, cherry hill mall, this is some of the most severe damage that we've seen with tents blown over in what appeared to be an auto show. those cars, they had damage on a closer look at women in politics. in pennsylvania, less than 18% of the state legislature is women. the state has never had a female governor or elected a woman to the united states senate. but that could change this snof. the democratic national convention is happening next month and today the dnc committee is asking to help from democrats of all walks of life. the platform committee is holding an event in virginia today and tomorrow. tar party members are encouraged to participate if creating the party's gaen. a verizon employee is dead after a car hit him in a work zone on route 1. so far no charges have been filed in the crash. now, this is the second deadly accident in a delaware work zone in the past month. back in may, a construction worker was hit and killed on i-95 in wilmington. authorities are reminding drivers to slow down in those work zone areas. wells fargo is teaming up with residents of parkside camden to create change in that neighborhood. today they held a brainstorming session, their focus, getting rid on abandoned property properties, crime and bringing economic growth to the area. residents were asked to give their ideas. the next step, bringing halls of congress. this congressman there bucks county introduced into bipartisan bills, both aimed at strengthening the regulation of medical and birth control devices. it would hold the food and drug administration and manufacturers more accountable. one bill is a medical device guardians act. while the federal agencies tasked with making sure the devices were safe were up aware of what was most places -- 65 in bethlehem, 62 in easton. but i found one, westereading 6. so a lot of these areas will be in the 50s as soon as the sun goes down and by morning, may even be in the 40s. this is what the radar looked like at 11:45 just before noon. right around the time that we had expected from trenton all the way down to wilmington. and this is when the severe weather was just starting to break out, too. because as it approached philadelphia, it wasn't as strong as it became. and then it raced offshore and now we're left with virtually nothing. one the sprinkle there near the turnpike. that's it. it's bringing this cooler air and we have some days with some cooler air. 83 degrees yesterday. it was in the 80s to near 90 earlier in the month. 73 today. 76 tomorrow. and 80 degrees on friday. of course you can see your own 7 day forecast bottom of your screen at any time during the weather cast. not just for philadelphia. and you don't have to wait until the end of the weather cast. these are the sustained winds right now. it's pretty windy. 24-mile-per-hour wind in wilmington, 23 in atlantic city. and tomorrow it's going to be windy, as well. maybe not quite as windy, we're certainly not going to see 50 miles an hour. wind gusts. but it will be 15 to 25 miles per hour with perhaps gusts to 35 miles per hour. no rain tomorrow, to for rain friday or early saturday. let's see what happens here on the futurecast. here we go, there is saturday morning. so a good bit of saturday will be dry. it will be on the warm side into the 80s. and then this other disturbance from can inada races down and i looks look another round of heavy showers and storms getting close it lehigh valley that will take longer of course to get to philadelphia and delaware and the jersey shore. but likely to be at least a period of some showers and thunderstorms. for the weekend, we expect of course storms on saturday. at the jersey shore, i'm not putting it in for the saturday forecast because it's more like saturday night. rest of the areas are saturday afternoon. comes in earlier in the lehigh vall valley, that's why it's not as warm p. and then sunday a windy day everywhere. and it's an offshore wind at the jersey shore. that's why they are as warm as the inland areas. so the 10 day outlook shows the dry weather for thursday and friday. there is the storms say it appears to be a clinging jelgly fish, potentially invasive species in new jersey with a sting on potent, some people have required hospital treatment. >> it's just not affected. >> reporter: hart spotted the jellyfish with a flashlight while fishing outside the point pleasant canal. he scooped it up with a jug. and they reached out to one of the experts. and he and a greoup of graduate students came to see it for themselves. >> this is the first occurrence in new jersey. >> reporter: the gem jellyfish turned up in cape cod. experts say they normally like shallow calm water. but not have confirmed that that is related to talks over the sugary drink tax. he wants three cents. one of the questions is will he get that full three cents, will he agree to something smaller. so a lot of
