parkway to get in or out of the city of philadelphia, take a look, you're not doing it this week. you can see how far the papal infrastructure, if you will, ranges from the stages and tents, speaker towers up there near the art museum and bond, there's really just stuff everywhere. equipment, emergency, large tv screens where they are going to be able to see the english subtitles. it's all in advance for the pope's visit and around the city, certainly inside the convention center, you can really feel it in the city now, the excitement is building. pope week, we've been talking about it for a long time, pope week is finally here. nobody seems more excited to be here in philadelphia than this group from zimbabwe, among the first to check in for the world meeting of families, they saved up their money for this trip. >> pope for the people. he's for the people. we're very excited! >> so that's down in registration. >> reporter: the vendor area in the convention center goes on and on and on. inside the main hall, final preparations for tuesday's massachusetmass, and for the catholic tv network, this is their super bowl. today was check-in day. catholics from all over the world arriving. many greeted by volunteers at the airport. today we met folks from mexico, this family from baton rouge, louisiana. this is their big vacation for the year. they wanted to be here for the meeting but when they heard the pope would be here, that cemented their plan. >> it's an opportunity for families quite literally from all over the world to get together and share our spiritualties, also talks where people give advice, help in both strengthening our marriages, strengthening our family life. >> reporter: as we come back live, you're looking down at the basilica below, the pope will be there saturday morning, i'll be there, too, as a matter of fact. you really kind of get this reminder these people are our guests in this city and don't take for granted they get to be in this great city. at 6:00 we look at some of the inconveniences but why some locals say it's very much worth it. we found a lot of people today who said they are going to be here, they want to see it. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. and it is day two of towing cars as officials begin enforcing parking rules before pope francis comes to philadelphia. tow squads were out there this morning hauling away cars that don't have the special resident placards. if you haven't moved your car from designated no parking zones over the next few days it will cost you a $76 ticket and another $175 towing fee after 10:00 p.m. thursday. >> over 80% of the parking spaces were cleared or people had purchased placards that are residents so we really minimized the number of vehicles we needed to locate. >> philadelphia's parking authority towed 67 cars sunday and another 57 today. tow trucks will be back out again tomorrow night near independence hall. another live look at the ben franklin parkway. changes already in effect here and throughout the city tonight. nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington joining us. >> any trouble spots right now? >> we have extra cars getting out of those tow zones that have to park outside of those areas and we have our normal drive home rush. so i'll go over the closures to see how that's affecting the surrounding areas. kelly drive closed between fairmount avenue and closed until tuesday the 29th. additionally the ben franklin parkway is closed in between this area in here. as you look at the vine street expressway, string of red as it approaches the schuylkill expressway, so all cars are slow going. with no parking in those areas around the ben franklin parkway, as well, between about 12th to 25th and that stretches two blocks or three blocks north or south of that area. pay attention to those signs heading out the door. schuylkill expressway into the center city area still only slow. no major jams, though, 24 minutes to the vine street expressway. jim? >> all right, jessica. >> as we saw in tim's report, people are already arriving in philadelphia at philadelphia international airport. you're going to see these people with orange shirts on, about 1,000 of them, greeters that are there to welcome people. you'll find them at the various baggage claims area walking around or standing in kiosks. they are armed with information to make the upcoming event as seamless as possible for people out of town. >> this is where it all starts, the pope isn't here for another couple days, but we do have the world meeting of families that starts tomorrow. hit the ground running from day one, yeah, it's exciting. >> these greeters will be in place from now until next monday. you can count on nbc 10 to follow the pope on his stops in the united states. rosemary connors and matt will report from washington, d.c., that starts tomorrow. then sydney long and katie zachary will pick it up from new york city starting thursday. a new warning about terrorists impersonating police officers proceeding the pope's visit to our area. nbc news obtained a memo distributed by pennsylvania state police. harry hairston joins us live in the digital operations center. a closer look at this warning, harry? >> this threat is not specific to the pope's visit. after reading the bulletin, we contacted some local police about their concerns as they prepare for the pope's visit and just moments ago william carlo gave us an idea how police will actually police each other looking for fake cops. >> it's very easy to acquire a police uniform, i'll be the first to tell you that. other things we have to look at, behavior, mannerisms, do they have a police radio, what type of weapon are they carrying, and that's up to the individual supervisors and our brother and sister officers and the public to be mindful of suspicious behavior. >> also today's memo referenced an incident from last year where a 19-year-old chechen suicide bomber dressed as a police officer before detonating an explosive. if you suspect someone is impersonating a cop, a firefighter, or an emt, call your police department. harry hairston, nbc 10 news. back to you. the pennsylvania supreme court is suspending attorney general kathleen kane from practicing law. kane's law license was temporarily suspended, but she does not have to leave office. kane will not be allowed to sign legal documents or make legal decisions and if she does make decisions on legal matters, she could be subjected to more criminal charges. kane released a statement afterwards saying she is disappointed in the court's action and saying in part, "i'm grateful that the court recognized my constitutional rights both as a democratically elected official and as a citizen of the commonwealth." . . to decision 2016 and then there were 15. sources say wisconsin governor scott walker plans to drop out of the republican presidential race. as of late, walker hasn't faired too well in the polls and he didn't get much face time in the gop debate last week. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> a live look right now in cape may. cool day at the shore. just a couple of people out there on the sand. it's only going to get cooler out there. sheena parveen is joining us. >> good to have a sweater when strolling the beach tonight. it's going to be a chilly night, sheena. >> yes, it is. if you thought last night and this morning were cool enough for a jacket, you can use it tonight and tomorrow. temperatures already cooling down from what we rose to today, mostly around 70 degrees. 66 now in allentown, 65 in reading, 69 now in philadelphia. 70 northeast philly and wilmington, 68 millville and this is all under cloudy skies. so that really holds the temperature down, too, and even a few light showers. these are very light rain showers moving through. now montgomery county, they are quick movers not sitting in one area for a long period of time. norristown seeing light rain, this will be moving into bucks county soon and also more showers moving into mercer county. more moderate rain near trenton across 295 and then up through the lehigh valley, light rain continues near the allentown area across 476 going into the poconos and we'll keep these showers in the forecast for a couple through the rest of the evening. new jersey or delaware by 9:00 p.m., temperature dropping down to 63 degrees by 11:00 p.m., low 60s and much cooler start tomorrow morning, too. i'll show you that forecast and midweek warmup coming up. a live look clark joins us live. >> what's the coach have to say, john? >> chip kelly said he was embarrassed by yesterday's loss. he is known as an offensive guru, but his offense was absolutely awful in the loss against the cowboys. so the eagles are 0-2 for the first time in eight years. take a look at the faces on chip and the players in this game. look at that. chip can't believe it. they were surprised with how slow this team has started in the first two games. demarco murray has just 11 yards in his first two games on 21 carries. that's the fewest yards for that amount of carries in a team's first two games in nfl history. so demarco's start is historically bad, but it is on the offensive line. sam bradford leads the nfl with four interceptions and he does not know why he is struggling. >> you know, if we knew we wouldn't be having these problems. you know, it's one of those things, obviously, i think we're all really frustrated right now. >> i'm frustrated with losing. when you work as hard as we do, i think every guy's frustrated. we're not making the plays we need to make as a unit. >> i think in a lot of situations we're overthinking a few things and going out flared a hearing for the accused killers of a little girl whose image was seen millions of time on social media. happening now, long time project to upgrade several bridges in lehigh county is under way. crews began work on fullerton avenue. they'll be extending the acceleration and deceleration lanes on all four interchange ramps and widen the fullerton bridge. commuters can expect daytime lane restrictions. the mother of a 2 year old found dead in a trash bag will be held in jail on a $1 million cash bond. meanwhile, the mother's boyfriend accused of the girl's murder has been denied bail. a woman who claims she is the child's godmother had to be removed from court today. 40-year-old rochelle bond, and the boyfriend had a hearing this morning. a friend of the couple testified that bond and mccarthy would lock bella in a closet for up to an hour. the friends also said mccarthy told him bella was possessed by demons. a woman discovered the child's body on a beach in june and a nationwide effort ensued to identify the girl. investigators announced her name last week, along with the arrests of her mother and mother's boyfriend. bella's biological father, whom she had never met, showed up in court today. >> i'm here as a father that loved my daughter. i was on my way to come meet my daughter for the first time and be a father to her. >> kevin mccarthy is charged with murder, rochelle bond with being an accessory after the fact. the number of burned homes from this wildfire in lake county, california, has passed 1,000. crews were just starting to get control of the fire in monterey county when the flames grew more intense yesterday. people living in the path of the fire say there was little time left when the evacuation order came. three people have died here. in less than 24 hours, pope francis will be welcomed in washington, d.c. the pontiff's arrival comes as new polls show this pope is very well liked in america. nbc news correspondent edward lawrence takes a deeper look at why. >> reporter: pope francis steers the catholic church to be more accepting. new a new poll shows overwhelming support for catholics, also more than half of all americans have a positive opinion of pope francis. >> especially because he knows how to reach out to people. doesn't matter whether they are catholic or not, still something special about this pope. >> reporter: pope francis has welcomed divorced catholics back into the church and allowed priests to forgive abortions. a new nbc polls show more than half catholics want the pope to address broader issues. 71% say a good catholic can be pro choice. 76% say a good catholic can support gay marriage. 88% believe a good catholic would allow women to become priests. >> regardless what the catholics believe, holy father believes all people are deserving of dignity and respect. >> reporter: a pew research poll finds among those raised catholic, 40% are no longer in the church. scholars say the way pope francis talks with followers engages people. >> he speaks in such a pastoral way that people are hearing what he's saying on the street and that's his intention, he takes the church out to the street. >> reporter: and the pope wants to inspire former followers with enough enthusiasm to return to the catholic church. the pope is very well liked within the catholic church. the new nbc poll shows that 82% of catholics in the u.s. have a favorable opinion of him. edward lawrence, nbc news, washington. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, a really cool start to the week feels a lot like fall, especially with kind of the overcast skies. it's going to be cool again tonight, that fall chill is going to continue tonight and tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night and then we're going to have a warm up by the middle of the week. temperatures will start going up a bit, but still very comfortable. then we have, of course, the weekend weather for the papal private. that one we are watching very closely. mid 60s in the lehigh valley right now. 67 in pottstown, 69 in philadelphia. 66 in glassboro. temperatures are really dropping pretty quickly. 68 millville, 59 degrees in dover. here's how it will shape up the rest of the evening. philadelphia area by 8:00 p.m. around the mid 60s. 10:00 tonight low 60s. for the poconos, mid 50s by 8:00 p.m. 10:00 around 50 degrees already. the shore, delaware beaches around 60 degrees by 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 closer to 60 degrees. we'll keep the clouds in the forecast tonight, can't rule out more light showers through the rest of the evening, but we only have a few spotty light rain showers right now. overcast, but up through parts of burlington county, mercer county, along i-95 and 295 we have light rain, moderate lane, trenton seeing light rain, as well. chesterfield and burlington county light rain, as well. across the pa turnpike, light to moderate rain showers. stretches over to norristown and across 476, but this is nothing heavy, nothing that should cause any problems on the roadways except maybe slower moving traffic. for parts of monroe county, light to moderate rain and kind of scattered light rain through the lehigh valley. we're going to keep showers in the forecast for tonight on the lighter side, but we will be staying cool even with the cloud cover around, which tends to keep us warmer. tonight, though, northeast wind that keeps cooling down the air for us and that's going to be the case as we go into tomorrow during the day. cool air moving in from the north, we have warmer temperatures down to south and west and we're going to be locked into this cooler air mass. it leaves for one more day. clouds hang around, too, into tomorrow. the cool air stays with us. mid to low 70s tomorrow afternoon. mostly cloudy skies, then the clouds clear out for wednesday. more sunshine, little bit warmer, same thing as we even go into thursday, then we'll be a little cooler as we go into the weekend. tonight, though, 52 for the low in allentown, 53 quakertown. for the trenton area, 57 for the low tonight. 57 norristown. along the shore, temperatures low 60s tonight, about the upper 50s for vineland and the philadelphia area with surrounding suburbs temperatures overnight tonight about the upper 50s. tomorrow mostly cloudy, cool, mid to low 70s, then we start to see more sunshine and warmer temperatures by wednesday. that's the first official day of fall. upper 70s, same thing thursday. going into the weekend we cool down to about the mid to low 70s. holiday shopping season will start pretty quickly. one retailer is looking to hire 85,000 workers. history tonight in the lehigh valley. live look at the wells fargo center. flyers left their home for the ppl center in allentown where they are going to face off with the new york islanders. it's the team's first preseason game and will be the first ever nhl game played in the lehigh valley. ppl center is home to the flyers ahl affiliate the lehigh valley phantoms. the teams take to the ice at 7:00 tonight. flyers return to the wells fargo center friday to take on the islanders. the lynx building at the corner of 8th and market will shine a new light tonight. more than 5,000 l.e.d. lights will highlight every window of the building. in addition to new lighting, the building is understood going extensive renovations on the inside. and macy's is looking for about 85,000 seasonal workers ahead of the holidays. the positions will be filled at macy's and bloomingdale's stores, call centers, distribution centers, and online centers nationwide. kohls expects to hire more than 70,000 workers and toys "r" us needs about 40,000 people. pope arrives five days from now. >> tonight pope francis is wrapping up his visit to cuba and is doing so with a message to the cuban people. plus, tim furlong monitoring changes taking place right in our area. tim? >> reporter: that's right, matters into their own hands. how some local college students stopped a burglar from making off with some valuables from their home. this is nbc 10 news. >> as part of his last full day in cuba before heading to the u.s., pope francis held mass this morning here in revolution plaza. the event marked the first time a pope has visited cuba's third largest city. tens of thousands of catholic faithful were there to greet pope francis. >> when the square reached capacity, throngs of followers lined the streets. jay gray reports from havana. >> reporter: there is a unique rhythm. and spirit for this island nation. thirsty for progress and change. and renewed hope now that the visit of pope francis can begin to quench that thirst. thousands gathered today in holguin as francis began the final leg of his cuban tour. though many cubans believe it's the proximity of guantanamo bay, not the history that drew the pope here. for years francis has urged the u.s. to close the facility there, but his homily this afternoon made no mention of politics, instead focused on service and the catholic faith. a testament to that faith, his trip to bless the city from the hill of the cross. his final stop this evening will be in santiago for a second mass and then francis will turn his attention to the u.s. jay gray, nbc 10 news. >> and a live look at the ben franklin parkway, site of sunday's open mass. things are starting to take form here. the pope arrives in philadelphia saturday after stops in washington and new york. nbc's tim furlong is live aboard sky force 10. >> bird's eye view of the changes in the city this evening. how's it looking from up there, tim? >> reporter: busy. you can start to see everything expanding. all the mplans they've been talking about for months are coming to fruition. the pope's portion of the meeting is what's causing the traffic problems. as the week goes on, it's going to get tougher to move. the good news as we look down on i-95, this road will not close. different ramps at different times as needed. see where 95 meets 676, that's going to close friday night. that's a major road. from the ben franklin bridge to the delaware across to the schuylkill, i-76, schuylkill will close east and westbound friday night. that a major deal, too. route 1 at belmont, that's going to close towards st. joe's to route 30 because the pope is staying at the seminary out there. jessica boyington, now, it's going to get tough to get around as we've heard for months now and today we're talking about it more. i understand parking is not going to be peachy keen either for this weekend coming up, right? >> that's exactly right. parking is going to be one of the biggest problems we're going to see before the major roadways are actually closed. so here's some papal parking restriction restrictions. right now all these areas in yellow that are a few blocks north and south of the ben franklin parkway closure, that's no parking and went into effect last night and more added on about 9:00 this morning. now the turquoise right in here that's going to be in effect by tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. there will be also no parking around the turquoise shaded areas and wednesday the 23rd around 9:00 a.m. there will be additional no parking streets added all around the area. you do want to pay attention to signs if they are posted in the area. if your car is towed. 888-591-3636. as for the schuylkill expressway, let's see how it's affecting traffic right now. this is around 676. we have an eastbound drive time of only 27 minutes. this is actually right along par with what we're used to seeing for our afternoon rush as you can see heading into the vine street expressway. biggest delay we're seeing is the vine street expressway. this is headed eastbound, but you can see the westbound delay string of red, 13 minutes right now and 10 miles per hour as the average speed westbound from 95 to the schuylkill expressway. >> all right, jessica. we now know the name of a new apartment building geared towards people who have fallen on hard times. the building at 8th and arch streets in chinatown is called francis house of peace in honor of pope francis and his dedication to helping those living in poverty. the nine story building includes 94 apartment units for low income adults and those at risk of becoming homeless. >> we have a homeless individuals out on the streets that we want to get into the place to live, so project home, none of us are home until all of us are home. we want everybody to have a decent place to it's now 69 degrees in philadelphia. we only got to around 70 degrees, some areas below 70, now we're dropping into the 60s. 66 degrees in allentown, 65 in reading, 68 now in millville and some of these temperatures are accompanied by very light rain showers. we had them early this afternoon and we still have them right now through burlington county, mercer county, trenton the light rain, lower bucks county, into lower montgomery county and 476 and up near the poconos and the lehigh valley, very spotty light showers. beautiful sunset, though, regardless of the cloud cover. there you can see the edge of the clouds. most of the area seeing overcast skies. tonight, some of the coolest spots areas north and west of philadelphia, lehigh valley, montgomery, bucks county. temperatures here bottoming out in the low 50s. coming up a look at how cool it will be in your neighborhood tomorrow morning and warmup by the middle of the week and, of course, the weekend weather for the papal visit. he's back again. he's looking, he fires, and it is intercepted! >> just an awful start for the eagles. birds fans down in the dumps tonight after sunday's defeat to the dreaded cowboys. that's not really the pope, but even the pope seemed saddened at the game. cydney long live in deptford, new jersey. >> not pretty at all and you've found some fans who couldn't even talk about it. >> reporter: yeah, that is right. in fact, one eagles fan who was shopping here at dick's sporting goods was so upset he ran from our camera, didn't have anything to say for fear that possibly some foul language might accidently slip out when he's talking about yesterday's game. they are also relying on divine intervention from the pope and to make things fair, we checked in with fans on both sides of the bridge to ask if they are losing faith this early on. >> i'm extremely upset. it was embarrassing and it was hard to watch. >> reporter: this is where eagles fans agree a sunday game so visually upsetting. >> it was hard for me to watch. usually i'm not that intense about it, but i was yesterday. >> reporter: eagles panic mode seems to be setting in early, i mean early in the season. deep breath there. >> it's too early in the season to give up on the eagles. they are a philly team, they are our team. >> reporter: planning and a lot of proving ground to make up. >> i see things i normally don't see. when you don't score a first down in the first half, that's when i panic. >> reporter: life long fans like tony pizzo couldn't blame it on one thing or person. >> everything went wrong. i think it all started with the offensive line. no protection for bradford. >> yeah, we were upset. i was at the game last night and it was a very despondent crowd. >> easy to blame chip, he's sticker shock, the cost of lunch is on the rise for plenty of people. the reason for the sudden surge straight ahead. no time to eat. a look at what one bus driver was caught doing while behind the wheel and what happened seconds after this video was recorded. a former peanut company executive sentenced to 28 years in prison for his role in salmonella outbreak. jurors found he knowingly sold tainted peanut butter and falsified lab results. the outbreak was back in 2008 and 2009. it was blamed for nine deaths and 714 illnesses. the next time you go to your favorite sandwich shop, don't be surprised if they are out of turkey or if that turkey sandwich costs more than the last time. a turkey breast shortage has prices jumping at some u.s. supermarkets. a flu outbreak that killed 8 million turkeys this spring is to blame. production is at a 15-year low. restaurants are also feeling the effects of the shortage. the poultry industry is bracing for another outbreak as birds migrate welcome back, terry. great to have you. >> i'm not sure if i should feel old after that introduction. >> you didn't retire after all. >> reservist coming back to active duty, that's right. let's talk about 36 years ago, because 36 years ago like so many people, barb made special plans to see the pope, but what is it they say about the best laid plans of mice and men, or maybe it's murphy's law, this mother from montgomery county was not going to be denied when some complications came up. barb says when pope john paul ii came to philadelphia 36 years ago, she was able to turn lemons into lemonade. >> i had planned to go to the mass. >> citizens, you must strive to preserve. >> reporter: but the day of the mass was the only day the hospital had open to test her 11-year-old son christopher suffering from an auto immune disease. she didn't give up hope on seeing the pope. that's barb and christopher in the back craning their necks to see the pontiff as he arrived at the convention center across the street. >> we were looking out, we were pressing noses against the window, especially the kids. we stayed up that whole night and made banners and said at least we could put the banners out the window and that would be our way to communicate with the pope. >> reporter: some patients, parents, and nurses went down to the street and were escorted across to be blessed. barb and christopher stayed behind but still thought that special visit was just what the doctor ordered. >> that special kind of joy can be the best medicine of all. and it really just lit up the whole hospital. >> reporter: it was good medicine, all right. christopher grew up to be a father and a successful businessman. barb didn't make the mass on logan circle, but then those folks didn't get to see the pope the special way that she did. >> i thought i was going to totally miss seeing the pope and here i got up close and personal. >> christopher did die a few years ago, too soon, for sheena parveen. >> well, a cool start to the week definitely feeling like fall and it will continue to feel that way as we go through tonight. the fall chill continues tonight, tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow night, and then we'll have a warm up by the middle of the week. by about wednesday and thursday we're going to see warmer temperatures move in. i think it's going to be a very nice middle of the week and then, of course, we have a cooler forecast for this coming weekend for the papal visit. i'll show you that in a second. of course, we're watching that closely through the week so we'll be tweaking it as we get closer. here's a live look near the art museum and schuylkill river. overcast skies, we've seen for a majority of the day, sunshine early, but then the clouds quickly took over. right now in philadelphia 69 degrees. it was in the low 70s today but now we're starting to cool down. mid 60s through the lehigh valley. 60s in the poconos, 68 degrees in trenton, 67 mount holly. 69 in dover, 68 degrees in millville. 67 in glassboro. cooler as we go overnight tonight. few light showers on radar to talk about, otherwise pretty much everybody seeing the cloud cover. light to moderate rain in burlington county. stretches up to 295 and up into parts of mercer county, over to parts of lower bucs county. very light rain and fares of middle bucks county. into the lehigh valley, spotty, light showers near easton, up into the poconos, as well, but this is really about it for tonight. we do stay cool, clouds hang around. can't rule out another stray shower and tomorrow afternoon looking at the clouds around. clouds clear out for wednesday. we'll get a little warmer, too, with more sunshine. same thing thursday, warmer, more sun in the forecast, then we go into the weekend we're going to cool down more again. for tonight's low temperatures, coolest spots areas north and west. allentown low 50s, around 52 degrees. 53 quakertown, 56 for doylestown. around 59 degrees for philadelphia, 58 mount holly and chester, as well as westchester and glassboro. 62 for cape may, atlantic city, possibly around 57 degrees for vineland. tomorrow mostly cloudy skies again, still staying cool through the afternoon, 72 to 75 degrees. wednesday, first official day of fall will be in the upper 70s with more sun, upper 70s thursday. so that's the midweek warmup. closer to 80 degrees. friday we cool down to the mid 70s and both saturday and sunday. so far putting more clouds in the forecast, staying cool. mid to low 70s and, of course, as we get closer to the weekend we'll be updating that if we need to add rain chances. as of now, looks mostly dry. a bus driver in new mexico is facing a lawsuit for distracted driving after this video surfaced. the albuquerque city driver was actually eating a bu ree tee with both hands when his bus slammed into a line of cars. eating or drinking while driving a city bus is against procedure. the
