It is high profile, and we defended, meaning if al qaeda can get through and attack aviation. Its that much bigger a success for them. Brian, good evening, at this hour, 140 undocumented immigrants from Central America have been diverted from this facility. One by one, many mothers carrying their babies were flanked by Border Patrol officers, as they boarded buses for the one hour drive to mur yetta. They were greeted by angry protesters, calling them refugees being bussed into their small cities. They squared off with immigration advocates as tempers flaired. Police stood between buses and protesters as the vehicle turned around, headed back on a freeway toward san diego. At best they are aggravating, at worst they can be deadly for the estimated 15 million americans who suffer from Food Allergies, including about 6 million children and including the peanut allergies that have come out of nowhere in recent years. But now finally, some new treatments are showing promising results for those who wish they could eat but they cant. Our report from our chief medical editor, dr. Nancy snyderman. For most of her young life, severe Food Allergies kept tessa feeling different from other kids. I felt left out. Her mom kim was terrified about potentially fatal reactions to dairy, wheat, egg, almonds and peanuts. I remember the first time she went to camp, i hired someone to shadow her and went and hid in the bushes to make sure she was okay. Reporter two years ago, they joined a study at Stanford University to build tessas tolerance to a combination of foods all at once. The team fed tessa tiny bits of protein from the foods she was allergic too. Gradually increasing the doses. They combined that with injections of a well known asthma drug. The result, she was desensitized to multiple allergens within six months. Even better, shes now able to eat many of the foods that once would have put her in the hospital. Its really exciting for me to say that for those people that stay in the study, they are having the same types of outcomes as tessa. How are things . Good. Another promising treatment for Food Allergies is a patch to help kids like spencer avoid severe reactions to peanuts. The goal of the patch would be to expose the skin to the food theyre allergic too in a way that is almost like a vaccination. The Study Results wont be released until october. But spencers parents say its the hope of a future free of Food Allergies that keeps them participating in the research. Great if it helps him, but even better if this is the trend toward allergy treatment and we can help other kids and other families. Theres no real cure for Food Allergies. The hope is, they can be managed so theyre not deadly. These treatments are not yet widely available. But things like the patch, as they await fda approval will keep you up to date. Brian.
