court. authorities charged the delaware county couple with endangering their children after the mauling. >> it's a case that's gained a lot of attention and is raising a lot of questions, too. nbc10's rosemary connors was at the courthouse today. >> you talked to the police chief about this case. what is he saying? >> reporter: the chief describes the parents as having special needs and says that when his officers responded to the ferret attack, the house was in disarray. there was no food in the fridge for the 1-month-old baby or her four siblings. >> all the kids are the correct weight. they have clothes, car seats. they never miss appointments. >> reporter: while the public defender speaking on behalf of 24-year-old jessica and her fiancee, 42-year-old bernie insist the couple is fit to care for all five of their children. the darby borough police chief disagrees. he did-s disappointed they have not undergone psych evaluations yet. >> i take it personal. i'm not going to go away. if i have to keep raising hell i'm going to have to keep raising hell but somebody has to help these kids. >> reporter: where ferrets attacked the face of a 1-month-old baby attention has also focused on delaware county youth and children service neps say before this incident the parents and kids were assigned a caseworker. based on your investigation so far, is children and youth services partly to blame for any of this? >> well i don't know whether -- that's a tough question to answer. you know we got a family that's really in crisis. >> i think there's always two sides to every story. and essentially these parents are very concerned, responsible parents. >> reporter: the police chief tells me that this morning he met with children and yoult services and some other agencies. they've been talking about the matter. he says that cys is investigating what happened. he says a possible lesson to be learned in this case may be that animals like ferrets and cats and dogs they were in the house, shouldn't be around small children. as for those kids the 1-month-old baby girl is out of the hospital doing okay, but will need more surgeries, plastic surgery, in the future. her four siblings are all in the care of foster parents. reporting live in sharon hill, i'm rosemary connors, "nbc10 news." a delaware county man is charged in the death of a 2-year-old boy. daniel grafton is held without bail charged with reckless endangerment and sources say more charges are coming. the boy had bruises on his head face and shoulders. police say grafton was alone with his girlfriend's son yesterday in her apartment while she worked. court documents say the toddler was apparently face-down in the bathtub for some time. turning to weather now. it's a built warmer relatively speaking to what we dealt with the fast few weeks. a live look at radar shows the snow won't last. >> the big question is when will the flakes start falling and who will see the most snow? >> sheena parveen is here with those answers for us. >>, yeah jacqueline and keith, it does not look very impressive at this point. as it moves through early tomorrow morning, we could see a lot of that snow break up. i'll show you that in a second. right now we're dealing with temperatures that aren't as cold. the coldest air lies to our north, the more mild air lies to our south. parts of our area are pretty much seeing both. in allentown, 33 degrees. dover, we're at 45 degrees. 45 wilmington even in philadelphia. reading coming in at 40 degrees. it does feel comfortable when you compare it to previous days where temperatures have been so much colder. we're on drit side up. see snow moving through parts of ohio. it's moving into parts of western pa. by the time it gets here tomorrow morning early, a lot of the models are showing it breaking up very light snowfall. we don't expect much out of this. but there could be a few snow showers around for part of your morning commute depending on where you live. coming up i'll break count timing. we stay dry. 42 by 6 p.m. by 8:00 temperatures in the upper 30s. by 10:00 tonight, the mid- 30s. we will be getting colder later and then we're tracking that snow for parts of the area tomorrow morning. i'll show you a close look at the timing of that followed by some really cold temperatures. that's coming up. we're following breaking news out of upper darby county. police say a man shot and killed a man trying to rob him. we have video from that scene in shore lane. police say the 68-year-old victim has a concealed weapons permit. he was taken to the hospital to be checked out for chest pain. sky force 10 over delaware county where an officer responding to a house fire crashed his patrol car. the cruiser slid on ice around 9:00 this morning pment officer is okay. this is the house fire that the officer was responding to. it was on washington street. you can see crews working to put out those flames. no one was hurt. firing back -- police in trenton start shooting when a suspect allegedly runs down an officer. the cop wasn't hurt but that suspect was shot. it is the second officer-involved shooting in trenton since the fall. nbc10's doug shimell is live in trenton with more on this case. >> reporter: administrators say in the wake of the police cases in ferguson missouri, and in new york and in the wake of the police officer cuts here administrators want to make sure that logo isn't some sort of target. the residents in the few homes not boarded up didn't understand why someone would try to run over two police officers early this morning. the fbi and mercer county detectives are now looking at why 23-year-old jeremiah sanchez allegedly used his car to try to hit the officers and why they shot him in the neck and arm. >> it's a split-second decision these guys have to make. so, we'll go through the walk-through and see what develops from it. >> reporter: last november trenton officers shot and killed a man who allegedly open fire on their police car. all this while the department still still copies with the loss of 130 officers because of budget cuts. are the numbers coming down? >> they seem to be on the rise. it's unfortunate. i think a lot of this has been you know fueled by what's going on around the country. >> i just remember hearing shots. that's it. >> reporter: this woman doesn't wanted her name used but says they still feel the cuts. >> it would be make you lot more safer. >> reporter: until they can add more officers trenton police say citizens simply need to comply with police. >> unfortunately, we're seeing a lot more of these things and never ends well. >> reporter: the officer was released with minor injury. the suspect will face at very least an attempted murder charge. doug shimell, "nbc10 news." police in three towns near reading are warning parents about a string of attempted child abductions. police say a man grabbed an 11-year-old boy while he walked to school. a man driving an suv approached a female school outside a school in reading and another woman was approached in burn township. last night we showed you this sketch of the suspect. police say all the cases could be related. but there were a few differences. for now, they're taking all cases seriously. >> investigators are looking for footage right now and we're hoping to find something on the footage. >> you keep your eyes out, keep your eyes open for something suspicious. >> parents should warn their children to stay away from strangers. they're stepping up patrols near the schools and bus stops. the tracks on one of the country's biggest commuter railways are still blocked right now after a crash late yesterday killed six people and injured more than a dozen others. the metro north train hit a jeep cherokee on the tracks in valhalla new york last night, about 20 miles north of new york city. nbc10 national correspondent jay gray has latest from new york. >> reporter: federal investigators continue to pore through the twisted and charred metal that still litters one of the nation's busiest commuter rail rail rail railways after what was a horrific night. >> four ambulances are required. >> reporter: six people are dead. more than a dozen injured after the train slammed into an suv that was stopped on the tracks. >> we intend to find out not only what happened, but we want to find out why it happened. >> reporter: initial indications are the crossing gates came down on the suv. the driver apparently got out to check for damage but when she got back inside couldn't get out of the way. the suv exploded into flames as it was pushed more than 100 yards down the tracks. the front car of the train also caught fire. chris gross was inside. >> people fell on top of me. turned around. >> reporter: chaos captured in pictures. and home video from witnesses and passengers outside the crash. inside the images were much worse. >> the guy in front of me broke his leg. the guy across from me broke his leg. as i was on the ground someone fell on top of me flames came up, about a foot away from my face and then after that happened, you know people are screaming, crying. >> reporter: a pain and sadness that lingers as the search for answers continues. jay gray, "nbc10 news." video you have to see. more than two dozen people are dead after a plane crashed into a river in taiwan shortly after takeoff. it was all caught on tape. the dash cam video shows the moment the transasia flight turned on its side clipped an overpass with its wing and then crashed into a river below. at least 26 people were killed. 15 were rescued. more than a dozen others remain missing. investigators hope this will tell them what caused the crash. crews recovered the black box. taiwanese aviation authorities say the pie lot issued a mayday call shortly after takeoff. the plane crashed into shallow water several dozen yartdz from the shore in the keelung river in taipei. crews pulled the plane's fuselage out of the water. officials said the plane was less than a year old and passed a round of safety checks last week. this video shows a survivor a little boy. he was rushed ashore where he was taken to the hospital. airline officials aren't talking about the cause yet of this crash but witnesses say the weather was clear when the plane took off. campus makeover. >> major overturned tractor-trailer. we'll continue to stay on top of this story and check in with sky force 10. stay with nbc10. more than 12 hours after it started, crews remain on the scene of a deadly apartment fire in montgomery county. one is dead, several hurt and dozens of others forced from their home. the fire broke out before 1:00 at norris apartments on swede street in norristown. we want to go to christine maddela live on the street there. what's the latest there? >> reporter: we're in the back of the building. you can see all of that debris and extensive damage. partial roof collapse wall collapse and windows blown out. ladder trucks from fire departments all over montgomery county battled the flames for hours. they were able to rescue residents on the fourth floor. >> i'm just happy to be here. >> reporter: steve was one of those people. we caught up with him after he was treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital. >> the hallway was pitch black with smoke. as soon as you took a breath of air, your lungs filled with fire, it felt like. >> reporter: he's lived on the top floor of this building for five years. it was a little frightening. the credit goes to the firefighters who braved the elements and the tenuous situation of everything. >> reporter: some of his neighbors got out on their own through a fire escape in the back. >> and there was so much smoke you couldn't see. >> reporter: one person died in the fire. i called the montgomery county coroner coroner's office but that person's name has not yet been released. the red cross set up an emergency shelter for the other neighbors. >> this is absolutely devastating. if you can imagine waking to the smell of smoke at 2:00 in the morning and run fog for your life. >> reporter: just checked back in with american red cross. they said there were 15 people there. they are in the process of moving those folks to hotels for the evening. fire investigators are trying to determine the exact cause of the fire but they think it might have started in a crash chute. reporting live in norristown christine maddela, "nbc10 news." our viewers who have the "nbc10 news" app were the first to learn about this after the flames erupted. it's a free download in your app store. take a look at the damage to this school bus. the bus rear-ended a tanker truck. we were told four students were on the bus at the time. they are all okay. medics air lifted the bus driver to a hospital in serious condition. also happening today, the man nominated to become secretary of defense went before a senate armed services committee today. if confirmed, ashton carter would replace outgoing secretary chuck hagel and would be the president's fourth secretary of defense since taking office. here's a closer look now at ashton carter's resume. he's from philadelphia, by the way. he has several degrees. one from yale and oxford universities. he served as deputy defense secretary from 2011 to 2013. before that he was a pentagon's weapon and technology undersecretary. at today's hearing, carter promisesed to fight against wasteful spending within the defense budget. kathleen kane met the latest deadline in her fight to clear her name. she submitted a written argument to the state supreme court. she's trying to persuade justices that a special prosecutor investigating leaks from her office did not have legal authority. a grand jury found they leaked information to a philadelphia newspaper. charges have not been filed while the supreme court has the case. now delaware's attorney general is weighing in on the case of a former death row inmate recently released from prison. jermaine wright vs 18 years old when he confessed to killing a liquor store clerk in 1991. after spending 25 years in prison a superior court judge overturned his conviction saying for various legal reasons his confession video shouldn't have been used against him. now attorney general matt den is working to get him a new murder trial. >> it was a decision the court effectively made. we're now taking every step we can as quickly as we can to try to have him re-arrested and reprosecuted. >> wright's lawyer tells nbc10 his client deserves to be free. going on to say, police coerced him into confessing in 1991 and the original prosecutor withheld key evidence. a nice mild day in the 40s. light snow as we go into tomorrow. the farther north and west you live of philadelphia, you have a better chance of having it affect your commute. after the snow leaves through the day tomorrow the bitter cold returns. winds will be increasing. temperatures will be dropping and it will feel colder. we're tracking our next chance of snow and rain. it looks like sunday and also monday. here's a live look at center city from the aquarium. we're dry and mild too, in philadelphia. 45 degrees. 16 degrees warmer than we were yesterday at this time so kind of a big warm-up. allentown is only 33 degrees. reading at 40. pottstown, 42. same thing, westchester. will midge ton, 45 degrees in dover. for tonight it's not going to be as cold either but we'll be watching all this snow off to our west. you see it moving into parts of western pa through ohio. it's pretty fast moving. right now we're on the dry side but as we go through the early morning hours, some of this will start to move in. some will break up as it gets closer. as we get closer to midnight it doesn't look as impressive. we'll keep watching. we could have snoi showers north and west. pocono, lehigh valley some suburbs in the morning hours. any accumulation would be very little. through the afternoon we start to see big changes. we're dry in the afternoon but winds will increase. by 7:00 tomorrow morning it will be feeling like single digits. allentown, you could feel like 1 degree come 7:00 tomorrow. pretty much this time tomorrow evening. it is going to be cold as we go into thursday night and friday. the weekend doesn't look too bad. mostly cloudy. chance of shower late mostly in the morning hours. it will get windy and colder. temperatures dropping from 19 to 23 degrees but it keeps on getting colder as we go into friday night and tomorrow morning. morning low friday morning, 12 degrees. the wind will make it feel close to zero. then saturday starting off the weekend, it gets milder again. 42 degrees. sunday we're update coming up. police dash cam video threatened to end the career of a south jersey politician. today it's the police officer on the tape who's facing a judge. would you come with me for five minutes so i can show you what it is i'm going to be doing? >> uninvited guests. innocent enough but often ends as a crime. the local police department is taking creative steps to get the world out about these crafty criminals. a north jersey high school with a famous alum is closing its doors. the school has 340 students. enrollment numbers are down. there is talk about raise money to keep the school open. one man who supports that idea nbc's brian williams. he attended mater dei. he says he is heartbroken after learning his alma mater is set to close in june. he is said to be highly interested in any attempts to save the school. we have major problems to tell about you the on the schuylkill expressway. >> a live look at the area in montgomery county from one of our traffic a live look at the scene. the westbound lanes are expected to fully reopen at 6:00 tonight. some traffic is able to get by. you see crews out there trying to clear this scene. we're going to continue face-to-face with the officer who pulled him over as the former cop goes on trial. that video will play a key role in the criminal trial against a disgraced gloucester county police officer. >> he's accused of falsely arresting assemblyman paul moriarty for drunk driving. cydney long was in court as the trial got under way today. >> a busy day in court. >> reporter: it was. we could feel the attention in court. paul moriarty was the first person to testify pep told the jury that car dealership that tipped off police that he had been there earlier in the day and appeared to be drunk was a business he was no longer doing business with because of a political opponent who wanted to unseat him in the legislature worked there. this is a video a jury will see over and over a july 21 2012 traffic stop in which the manning be arrested -- >> i was aware of my surroundings. he was driving safely appropriately. >> reporter: assemblyman paul moriarty told jurors today he feels he was targeted illegally pulled over and lied to by why. the reason is a mystery. >> i don't know what's going on here because i've been lied to repeatedly. he said i cut him off, which i didn't. he said i smelled of alcohol. i couldn't because i hadn't had any. >> reporter: defense attorney says his client the police officer, did his duty to protect the public. telling jurors he had reasonable suspicion that moriarty was intoxicated after a tip from a local car dealership. the police officer is charged with falsifying documents and official police misconduct could that could ruin his career and force jail time. his defense attorney contends his client is innocent and this is about political power. >> it's all about the assemblyman, the ex-mayor. >> reporter: the jury we can tell you, has not yet seen that dash cam video. as for the police officer, he could face anywhere from 18 months to 10 years in mronprison if he is found guilty. cydney long, "nbc10 news." it's not exactly spring-like weather but not as cold as the past few days. if you take a look at first alert radar, you can see snow could be creeping back into the picture. the question s when will we see it here? >> snow showers around having the best chance will be lehigh valley poconos, anywhere north and west of philadelphia. take it slower on the roadways. unfortunately, it could be here for the morning rush. as of right now, we are seeing temps above freezing. in allentown, we're barely above freezing. 33 degrees there. as this moves through parts of the area tomorrow morning, we don't expect a lot of accumulation. i don't think it will make it all the way across the area but we'll keep updating you and tracking this tonight and early tomorrow morning on our morning show. as we go closer to 8 p.m. 38 degrees, it will be getting chilly. by 10:00 tonight, mid-30s. colder relatively speaking to the 40s that we saw today. coming up i'll show you a closer time of the snow as it moves in tomorrow morning and colder temperatures ending out the week. that's straight ahead. police in south jersey are investigating a second apparent home invase tar getting the elderly in four days. bridgeton police were called to a home on wayne road last night. a 74-year-old woman said two men came in through an unlocked door and demanded cash. she said they ransacked her house and left without hurting her. it's similar to one saturday night a couple blocks away. in that case police say two men armed with a knife broke into the 94-year-old victim's bridgeton home demanded money and attacked him. he's in the hospital. police are increasing patrols in that area. new video from nye new castle called re-enact reaction burglary. it happens a lot. >> i don't want anybody to complain and say i damaged your property. >> he claims to be cutting trees at a neighbor's house and lures her outside the home with a simple text. his partner inside taking whatever he wants. police say if you're not sure who the person is behind your door, don't open it. if you leave the house, lock the door and not just the front door but the windows and the garage door. call the neighbor to come however and watch that home too. anyone who does go goes door to door must display a sales i.d. card. comedian tracy morgan's federal lawsuit against walmart will go on as scheduled. today a judge ruled against truck driver kevin roper, who asked the trial be delayed. roper was driving a walmart truck last june on the new jersey turnpike when he crashed into a limo van morgan was in. one of morgan's friends died in the crash. roper is concerned the outcome could impact his federal trial. today is a day promising young athletes it is national signing day. >> they get so excited about this. comcast researchers have begun testing a vaccine they believe could prevent the cancer from returning. it targets so-called negative breast cancer by killing the deceased cells. the vaccine is given for six months after standard chemotherapy. it's difficult to treat and usually recurs. penn trauma center was moved today. patients were taken by ambulance to a new location at presbyterian medical center. the hospital says it's two years in the making but will give critically injured people access to the most up-to-date care. the emergency room is staying put at the university of pennsylvania. and how about this bragging rights go to the philadelphia fire department today. the department won its weight watchers battle of the badges weight loss competition for the second year in a row. the wife of a lieutenant in the department lost the most weight. she won a keurig coffee maker. the competition is in its 28th year. the overall standing the fire department is ahead of the police department 15 to recruit from our area, st. joe's prep's john reed, he is going to penn state. reed played receiver and cornerback at the prep. he was recruited as a defensive back. he's the third best recruit in the state of pennsylvania according to rivals.com. he chose nittany lions over offers from a number of other big schools like alabama and notre dame. >> i wasn't necessarily a tough decision for me you know close to home the networking is great, coaches are amazing up there. i thought it was a pretty easy decision for me honest lply. it's stressful with coaches constantly contacting you but they sometimes forget you're a football player and you have to worry about your own team also. it was difficult. >> another st. joe's prep player heading to michigan to play for jim harbaugh. you might recognize his name, john runyon jr. his father was one of the best offensive tackles to play for the eagles. the senior runyon also played college ball at michigan but he never pressured his son. he reduced the number of ways to reduce concussions in student athletes. after such a mild day today, now we are tracking snow showers for early tomorrow morning. it does look to be on the lighter side. i don't think everyone will see them but we'll see an area of snow try to move in in the morning hours and more bitter cold meaning very cold temperatures combined with some very strong winds. this will be here after the snow tomorrow so ending out tomorrow it will feel like single digits. into the weekend we'll be watching an area of rain and snow move in. i'll show you that in a second. still 33 degrees in allentown. a big difference when you get to pottstown, 42 degrees. 42 in westchester. we're still in the 40s here so still a milder end to the evening but come tomorrow morning, we will still be on the chilly side. much colder tomorrow night. here's a look at the snow all back to our west moving into parts of western pa. right now it looks fairly impressive but it is still on the light side. a lot of models are starting to break up the snow. we are dry but we'll watch it this evening to see how it looks moving closer to the area. here's what future weather shows. over the next few hours it gets closer but by midnight it starts to break up and lose a lot of moisture. i think that will be the best chance during the morning commute. through the afternoon, we just start to get really windy. temperatures drop. so, later tomorrow in the day we're going to get windy and a lot colder. this is going to make temperatures feel a lot colder. feels like temperature at 8 a.m., feeling like single dijs across most of the area. overnight into friday morning and in some areas north and west we could feel below zero. today's warm-up was a short lived one. areas north and west by 7:00 in the morning friday, there you see it around zero degrees for the i hichlt 95 area from philadelphia to trenton. some suburbs in south jersey like burlington county feeling around 5 degrees. same thing south jersey and delaware anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees when you factor in the wind. now we'll jump ahead to sunday watching an area of low pressure move through. this will be sunday into monday. most of the snow should stay to our north. either way we do have rain and snow in the forecast as we go from sunday into monday. of course, we'll be updating that as we get closer as well. for tonight, mostly cloudy temperatures staying in about the mid to upper 20s. tomorrow early snow showers, best chance north and west. any accumulation would be very small. it will be windy and colder through date. that will make it feel like single digits tomorrow night and into friday morning. very cold to end out the week. saturday, though, we're in the 40s. then we go into sunday and monday and >> reporter: dina was shopping for a kate spade handbag and found a deal on what looked like an outlet shop for the designer retail. >> and it looks exactly like a kate spade outlet site. it was $448 on sale for $130. i'm like that's perfect. >> reporter: it wasn't until she tracked the shipment and it came from china that she became suspicious. she called a kate spade store in toms river. turns out the website katespadeoutlet.eu.com is not an authorized outlet. they pointed out their website is simply katespade.com. >> they're putting up these websites that they can take down at a moment's notice. >> reporter: special agent in charge is with homeland securities. he says sales through unauthorized websites are up. how can you spotted them? >> pick up the phone and call the number. if there's no number listed, it's a tremendous red flag off the bat. >> there was no phone number anywhere on the website. >> reporter: concerned about the authenticity of the handbag, she said she tried street. no officers have been hurt here and no word on what led to that gunfire. >> we also understand they have just taken that suspect into custody. the peak of drive time rush hour and a major problem on the schuylkill. sky force 10 over i-76 in montgomery county where crews are working to clear a toppled tractor-trailer near exit 442 in upper merion township. a busy time of course, during the evening rush hour. let's take a look at the scene from sky force 10 a short time ago. the accident has been causing big problems in the westbound lane since 1:30 this afternoon. some traffic still getting by but delays can be expected until crews can clear that wreck. we'll continue to monitor goments here let you know if anything changes on the schuylkill. delaware county upper darby police say a man shot one of two thieves who tried to rob him. the other suspect got away. it happened on short lane cobbs creek park. police say the 68-year-old victim has a concealed weapons permit. paramedics took him to the hospital to be checked for chest pain. also tonight, a man in delaware county is facing charges after a toddler's death. >> nbc10's deanna durante live at the norwood police department. what do you know about what led up to this child's death? >> reporter: we know 31-year-old daniel grafton was questioned here for some time by police according to this criminal complaint. the 2-year-old boy's body was taken to a nearby doctor's office. the doctor's office where that 2-year-old's mother was working at the time. police say he had bruises all over his body and that the
