the mild temperatures are still here but for how long? >> nbc10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here to break the news to us. what about it glenn? >> by this time tomorrow afternoon, it is going to be much, much colder. probably 25 degrees colder than it is right now. and the wind that's blowing from right to left now that will be blowing from left to right at this time tomorrow. bringing in the colder air. most of the showers are on the lighter side. there's more at the shore than around philadelphia. and there's more up toward the poconos. a few showers in the lehigh valley berks county. again, not on the heavy side but we do expect perhaps, some development this afternoon. the next couple of hours, we'll be watching the western skies and the western counties on the radar to see if this area of thunderstorms does develop here. that is a possibility. what is a certainty is the cold air. tell you just how cold it's going to get and when and more on the timing of the rain with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> thank you. nbc10 has obtained the 911 calls from the high-profile death of a man in police custody in cumberland county. >> this case has sparked criticism about how officers handled the situation. harry hairston live in our digital operation center. >> what kind of insight do these tapes offer? >> as you're about to hear these 911 tapes may give you somewhat of an idea of what the officers' mind sets were like when they were approaching -- the caller clearly laying out what the situation looked like. >> 911, where's your emergency? >> yeah there is somebody freaking out here on 118 west grape street. >> 118 west grape street? >> west 18 yeah. >> what's going on there? >> i don't know. some guy just going crazy. >> nbc10 broke this story last week. that's when 32-year-old phillip white died while in police custody. now family members are calling for an independent investigation into what happened last tuesday. this is cell phone video taken after police responded to a disorderly person's call. the video shows white lying on the ground surrounded by several police officers and a police dog. now, vineland police have not commented on it, referring us to the prosecutor's office. when we reached out to the cumberland county prosecutor's office they say they cannot comment except to say that it's under investigation. reporting live from the digital operations center, harry hairston, "nbc10 news." we are now less than three hours away from the first televised debate in the 2015 race for philadelphia mayor. >> you're going to see that debate right here on nbc10 and on our latino sister station tell telemundo 62. the candidates will square off at the kimmel center. the hour-long debate begins at 7:00. nbc10's rosemary connors is live at the debate site. >> what issues can we expect to see front and center tonight? >> reporter: well renee and keith, education funding, job creation and taxes, those are going to be the top three issues this evening. inside the pearlman theater, that's where you can hear those issues debated. our crew is hard at work. they're rehearsing for their 4:00 practice time. again, we'll hear all of those issues discussed, debated by the democratic candidates. nbc10's jim rosenfield will moderate the debate along with our political experts crafted the questions. some questions also came from viewers who submitted them online over the past few weeks. earlier today we spent time talking to voters about what is important to them and what they hope to hear this evening. >> i'll be listening for education and innovative ideas about bringing local control back. >> so many good parents that need affordable housing. they're in shelters. >> for the racial tension that's gone on around the major cities police violence, i would like to see philadelphia do something about that. >> reporter: this is where the six candidates will be positioned on stage. from left to right, abraham, diaz kenney oliver, street and williams. we expect the candidates to arrive here at 5:30. the doors to the kimmel center will be opened at 6:00 for the audience to candidate running in the gop primary. melissa murray bailey is running unopposed as a republican for philadelphia mayor. drexel university tells us it's investigating a law professor who allegedly e-mailed students a link to a pornographic video. school officials say professor lisa mcelroy's e-mail last week erroneously included a link to inappropriate materials. nbc10 reached out to the school for comment. they said, in part, drexel is required to initiate fact-finding for all reports of inappropriate behaviors of a sexual nature that may impact members of our community. whoa have new information about a hazing investigation involving the women's softball team at st. joe's university. today members of the team released a statement through the school newspaper saying they are, quote, devastated by the allegations. the school is investigating whether some of the girls forced younger players to participate in unsanctioned hazing. the team also said in part we are facing allegations head-on and with our heads held high. hawk hill is too important to us to do anything less. several dozen students walked out of class at norristown high school this morning. the peaceful protest was prompted by an teacher who allegedly made racist comments toward a student. the teacher was given a two-day suspension but some students didn't feel that was enough so they walked out of class. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues now with new information on a 14-year-old lehigh valley girl accused of murdering her mother. >> today we're getting a better picture of life behind bars for the teen. nbc10's doug shimell talked to the girl's attorney today. >> what is the attorney saying about his young client? >> reporter: well, her attorney says after visiting his client here at lehigh county jail today, he says he is immediately asking the court to have her moved to a juvenile facility because he says his 14-year-old client is not a cold-blooded killer. >> i melt with her in the prison the adult prison. she was very tearful. >> reporter: john waldron's murder defendant wears braces and is in the eighth grade. >> she misses her mom. she was crying about her mom today. the events that have transpired over the last few weeks are just devastating to her. >> reporter: 14-year-old jamie is charged with conspireing with her 20-year-old boyfriend, who's in the army to murder her own mother after she demand the two stop dating. >> caleb barnes was controlling her. she's not able to control him. an eighth grader doesn't control a 0-year-old soldier. >> reporter: but lehigh county's prosecutor showed deleted texts that say, quote, she threated to throw me out of the house. i want her gone. the other says i'm going up to the bathroom while do you it. would it don't we wait until we get in the car with her. another text from jamie, just do it. those seem pretty damning on the face of them? >> they do on the face of them. >> reporter: he says keep in mind caleb barnes also faces a murder charge for stabbing sheryl in the neck, burying the body and trying to push the bloody car into a pond. >> i want to go through each text as to what she meant by those, too. they do sound damning at times. we're going to have to deal with those. well caleb barnes' public defender declined to comment but i spoke with lehigh county attorney, jim martin who says those texts speak for themselves and his office will reject any attempts to have jamie tried as a juvenile. doug shimell, "nbc10 news." supporters of abu jamal are protesting the medical treatment given to the convicted cop killers. supporters released these pictures shown yesterday. they claim to show mistreatment. they say he suffered an eczema outbreak three weeks ago which covered the body in blisters leading the prisoner to go into diabetic shot. he's he's serving a life sentence without parole. he was convicted of killing officer daniel faulkner in december 1981. people united we'll never be defeated! >> supporters of abu jamal gathered outside the district attorney's office. they're calling on medical care and saying the medical care given to the inmate substandard. they equate it with a murder plot by the state. abu jamal supporters also used the protest to express several demands. among them daily visits by abu jamal's family and friends, access to a diabetes specialist and a diet suitable for diabetics. they also want the department of corrections to a lou the release of his medical records and a probe of health care. we reached out to the department of corrections. they say they're working with his representatives and add, quote, when an individual presents to the medical department with symptoms or issues that require a higher level of medical care that individual is sent to the local hospital. nbc10 has new information now about the kent county business where bullets were flying at a teen party on easter sunday. >> it turns out the place was ordered shut down last month. cydney long is live at the scene of that deadly crime in haddon township. >> what did you uncover today? >> reporter: i can tell you the business was successfully shut down a month ago and code enforcement officials tell us they checked on it just last week. part of the confusion with this investigation is the building where the teenage party was held. that sits in camden city. but the parking lot where the shooting occurred is in haddon township. a bright yellow camden city code enforcement sticker dated march 2nd seemingly peeled back and scraped up was a car dealer's cue with no license to operate he had to shut down and the fact teenager bright was shot and killed in this parking lot sunday night has camden city leaders fuming. >> once i heard that there was a dance or something that took place and that this was a car dealer not a nightclub, my question was who is this guy and what is he doing? >> reporter: neighbors on the haddon township side of the lot along grant avenue -- >> it's not a new problem. you know it's been going on for months. >> reporter: say they fear for their own safety. that the business is a nuisance in the community. we found out today from the prosecutor's office that as many as 100 teens attended this sunday night easter glow in the dark party. >> unfortunately, it's our problem because most of the kids there are city kids, so we got to make sure we stay ahead of it, make sure there's no retaliation. >> reporter: investigators tell us they're working to enhance surveillance video of the chaos that unfolded. we tried to dig up gas station security video, but it was too grainy. city leaders say they're confident the shooter and anyone else liable will be brought to justice. >> that location was closed should not have been open for any type of business let alone a nightclub and throwing parties for kids where you're charging them. so, i can assure you that we will and our attorneys will do their due diligence to go after the property owner. >> reporter: and the city of kam dan just told me who owns the building and that that person leased to the business next door but that leasee perhaps sublet to pitts automotive. the question is who has the key to this building and why would they allow a teenage party to unfold at a business that is zoned commercial and that was shut down? live in haddon township cydney long, "nbc10 news." staying in new jersey it's a done deal. atlantic city's former rebel casino is getting a second chance. today a deal closed to sell revel to florida developer glenn straub. he paid $82 million for the casino which cost $2.4 billion to build. the deal was finalized after four earlier attempts to sell revel fell through. more good news for atlantic city. tonight casinos increase their gross operating profits by 44% last year despite the shutdown of four casinos. the atlanta club showboat, trump plaza all closed last year. a small plane leaving the ncaa tournament in indianapolis crashed and all seven people on board are dead. the plane took off from indianapolis and crashed just short of its destination of central illinois regional airport in bloomington. it was very foggy at the time. the ntsb is investigating. relatives say there were several men on board that plane who went to the championship game last night. happening now. jurors are deliberating the fate of accused boston bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev. the jury was handed the case a little less than a week before the second anniversary of the deadly attack in boston. michael rosenfield has been covering the federal death penalty trial and joins us live from boston now. michael, first the jury has to decide whether to convict dzhokhar tsarnaev and then his punishment right? >> that's right. jury deliberation began first thing this morning. these are the documents the jury foreperson will eventually have to fill out, 30 counts in all, as they decide the fate of dzhokhar tsarnaev. a new phase under way after weeks of testimony, including heartbreaking accounts from marathon survivors, the case is in the hands of the jury. the united states of america versus dzhokhar tsarnaev will now be decided by seven women and five men. he is facing 30 counts charges ranging from using a weapon of mass destruction, both at marathon finish line and watertown, bombing of public use, conspiracy and carjacking. >> we're all guessing as to how long the jury will take because they are looking at an awful lot of evidence that helps to establish his guilt. but there are also a number of charges where they may find the evidence is lacking. >> reporter: with so many exhibits presented in court, jurors will be able to view videos and photos of the evidence on a touchscreen in the jury room. the judge warning jurors not to let the graphic images override their rational weighing of the evidence. while the defense openly admitted in court dzhokhar tsarnaev should be held accountable and his actions deserve to be condemned, they say if it hadn't been for his older brother, none of this would have happened. they say he researched how to make the bomb he bought the bomb-making materials and he built them. the defense argues tamerlan tsarnaev led and dzhokhar tsarnaev just followed. they hope the jurors will eventually spare his life. prosecutors say the two men were partners in crime. that they prepared for the attack, coordinated with each other and that he was radicalized like his brother pointing to his own words scribbled on a boat hiding in watertown, explaining his actions. >> no one expects we won't see a guilty verdict in the bombing case but the jury is taking its time going through a 32-page jury verdict form and being deliberate. and hopefully, likely, we may see a verdict some time tomorrow. >> reporter: and if jurors do find dzhokhar tsarnaev guilt y a new trial will begin and the same jury will have to decide if he should be sentenced to death or life in prison. live in boston, michael rosenfield, "nbc10 news." >> yesterday was warm and sunny. today warm and cloudy and some showers around. we got kind of a wet week. the rest of the week we'll have rain probably every day. a huge temperature drop is on the way. the next 24 hours, you may not even believe it. then weekend changes. things are going to improve tremendously by then. phillies had great weather yesterday. he won't for the next two games. 67 degrees. wind is calm. cooler than this time yesterday. still on the warm side. the severe threat tracker for tonight, not all that high for heavy rain and lightning and, of course, very very low for high wind, hail or tornadoes. keep an eye on every system to see what the threat level is. it's down to 59 in allentown. was into the upper 60s. 60 in trenton. the colder air just starting to come into the region. boy, is it colder. it's 40 in boston all of this is moving to the southeast, moving in our direction. it's already down to 49 in long island. southerly wind here, meeting the northeast wind. the northeast wind is going to win. and so look at the wind increase, 60 miles an hour in trenton. 14 in northeast philly. you'll feel that northeast wind and then the temperature is going to go down significantly as a result. look at that clash of winds there. that is a classic front there. now you can see some of these showers back to the west. a little bit heavier than what's coming through south jersey right now. these are generally lighter showers, moving pretty quickly. this stuff is moving quickly through into allentown, up through the poconos, getting some of that. and we're going to see the possibility of some showers or storms developing to our west. right along that front early this evening. as temperatures drop when the wind comes out of the northeast. you can see the heaviest of the rain falls closer to the warmer air. so, it's just kind of a damp pattern. as you go through the day tomorrow, that temperature's not going up. if anything it's going down. and so it is really going to be nasty by this time tomorrow. for tonight, the showers, chance of a thunderstorm going to be breezy and colder. temperatures down into the low 40s. the wind will make it feel even colder. but that's just the beginning of it. tomorrow temperatures hold in the 40s maybe even drop. some patchy light rain and drizzle. and still kind of breezy. an equally cold and damp day on thursday. friday we jump back up to 72 with thunderstorms likely. that sets us up for a nice, dry comfortable weekend. and i couldn't see leaving the borough without a payroll. >> she used nearly $15,000 of her own money to pay employees. >> i've never heard of anything like that. >> why the local town refuses to pay money-smart workshops at strawberry mansion high school. it's all in honor of national financial literacy month. the workshops touches on topics like checking and savings accounts, your credit and knowing your rights as a consumer. >> as you learn young, you develop the behaviors in order to be successful. that impacts your families and also what you teach your children. it really helps you to build and grow a very strong life. >> how great is that? more than 50 workshops will be available throughout the month of april. a call for open score textbooks. some rutgers camden students are applauding the move to make the university offer cheaper alternatives to traditional college textbooks. they issued its recommendation to the school's president to promote the use of open scores textbooks. those would be online free and a printed version would be offered at a produced price. now, back to our top story -- >> a new clue in the abduction and beating of a jewelry store worker in center city. police released this video of the burgundy van. they say it contained three suspects and the 53-year-old victim. investigators say those men assaulted and tasered the woman before dropping her off at a cemetery in darby borough. the suspects are still on the loose. couldn't see leaving the borough without payroll. >> she says she loaned thousands of her own money to her town so right now at 4:30 a stretch of wet weather is about to leave its mark on the nbc10 viewing area. in addition to the umbrella you'll need the heavy coats again. nbc10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is back. >> yesterday was near perfect. that's not going to be the case for the next couple of days. >> oh yeah. you'll think today was beautiful once we get into tomorrow. it's kind of gloomy up here in the pocono mountains. they have fog, rain cold air. we're just starting to come into that area. you can see the rain in the poconos and lehigh valley. some at the shore. most is on the lighter side. near the poconos it's a little heavier. heavier around allentown. the colder air is starting to come in as temperatures drop around 47 in mt. pocono. look how much colder in new england and with the northeast wind that air is headed right in this direction. but not so much this evening. we do have those showers, a chance of a thunderstorm over the next few hours. but as we go into the morning, it's going to start getting colder. then it gets even colder than that. we'll have those temperatures and the timing on the rain coming up with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> don't like the sound of that but we'll check in later. here's a question for you now. would you loan your employer thousands of dollars? >> that's one elected official did and now she wants her money back. one problem this municipality, well they said no. nbc10 investigator harry hairston here with that story. how much money are we talking about? >> just under $15,000. all from a retirement account. now the question will it get back to where it came from? december 2011 the borough of colwyn didn't have enough money to pay its employees. >> we're talking the police department. we're talking about guys who put their lives out there every single day. not getting a check for christmas for the kids? paying bills, mortgages? >> reporter: and councilwoman martha was about to go on a cruise with her family. >> i couldn't see leaving the borough without a payroll. i took out a loan on my retirement for $14,999. >> reporter: she says she deposited the money in the borough's payroll account and left on vacation. now, four years later, she wants her loan back. and the agreement with the borough at the time -- >> no, no there was no agreement with the borough. i did this without the borough's knowledge. i didn't tell the borough. >> i've never heard of anything like that. >> reporter: executive director of the pennsylvania ethics commission. he says there is nothing in the ethics code prohibiting an official or employee from loaning a government money. but there's usually a process. including a vote by council. >> just a matter of xhan sense it would have been documented approved by the governing body of the municipality. >> i have no records. >> reporter: colwyn borough manager isn't convinced it ought to be paid. >> we have to have concrete evidence she did do that. if the council never authorized it, it's not an -- it's not authorized. >> reporter: the nbc10 investigators obtained a borough report showing a deposit in 2011 for $14,999. it's labeled loan. march than vanauken. she provided us with bank documents that show the money was taken out of the account. here's a note to the bank having them transfer the money to the colwyn account. they disagree on whether the money should be repaid. they're on opposing sides in chaotic colwyn county meetings that sometimes bleed over to the hallway. she says that's her money and she wants it back. where does the borough go from here? >> it was never legally authorized. so i mean that's something that a judge is going to have to eventually decide. >> reporter: and that's exactly what vanauken is planning. she's going to sue the borough to get her money back. >> it's a mistake, now i see it was a mistake, but at the time i was emotional and i felt that something -- if i could do something, i would do it. >> she is not just out of $15,000, with penalties and fees she tells us, she's lost more than $20,000. rob caruso with the ethics commission says there is evidence the transaction took place, the borough probably should repay her. for the investigators, harry hairston, "nbc10 news." an infant and 5-year-old brother are dead after a fire tore through their western pennsylvania home. another boy and the child's mother were burned. the fire started around 2:00 this morning in a house in new castle. that's in lawrence county. investigators say the fire began on a chair in the parents' upstairs bedroom. a 3-month-old was found in that room on his parents' bed, his 5-year-old brother was found in a back bedroom. firefighters arrived quickly but say there was little they could do. >> in the first 20 minutes we were already out of the house and the fire was basically out. everybody was in ambulances and gone within the first 20 minutes. >> firefighters say the home had no working smoke detectors. >> state officials are testing a coyote for rabies after the animal attacked a man in north jersey. they say it attacked the man and also attacked a dog last week. authorities euthanized the coyote. it's now at the state's fish and wildlife division for testing. happening now, new jersey governor chris christie is taking his town hall series to middlesex county holding his 134th town hall event in old bridge. christie has been holding the events every week as he tries to sell his proposal to further overhaul the state's pension for public workers. he'll be taking his tour on the road for the first time next week when he'll hold two town hall events in the early voting state of new hampshire. new jersey residents are weighing in on the future of senator menendez in the wake of his federal indictment. according to the latest rutgers/eagleton poll 58% say he should keep his job unless he's proven guilty. 34% want him to leave office immediately. federal grand jury indicted menendez last week. he's accused of accepting nearly $1 million from a friend in exchange for a political favor. menendez pleaded not guilty. another republican made it official today, joining the candidates who want the party's nomination for president next year. >> i have a message! a message that is loud and clear and does not mince words. we have come to take our country back. >> kentucky snorl rand paul announced his campaign. he blamed both major parties for what he says is a decline in america's economic outlook and a rise in the national debt. when the confusing results are taking a toll now. we'll explain the latest scientific findings. and next waiting to be seen. nbc10 with new figures that show how long it takes for local vets to get an appointment at local va hospitals. false-positive mammograms cost the health care system about $4 billion a year. that's the finding of a new harvard study. about 11% of the women in the study had a false-positive mammogram which led to another mammogram or biopsy at a cost of $850 per person. more than 18,000 medical appointments were delayed at least a month at veterans affairs hospitals and clinics in pennsylvania. according to an associated press review of government data from a six-month period. despite this the state fared better with wait times than the national average. to this now. important to look far into the future. people in parts of new jersey and delaware will hear emergency sirens tonight. but don't be alarmed. it's just a test. sirens near the hoke creek generating stagts in salem county will be tested at approximately 7:20 tonight. they'll sound for a full three minutes. there are 34 sirens in salem and cumberland county in new jersey and seven in the state of of everything goes together really well. >> a local krispy kreme shop originally planned to make the doughnut but the corporate office nixed the plan so the local bakery happily took on that job. >> keep that in mind tomorrow and thursday. when the weather's so miserable. the wind continues to be coming out of the south at least it has for a couple of days now. it's getting calm, just getting ready to shift and drop that temperature from the 67 degrees that we have right now. it's down to 59 in allentown. mt. holly, down to 57. they were 71 degrees a couple of hours ago. so, that is the proof that this front is on our door step and temperatures are going to be dropping. of course, it's already cooler at stone harbor because the wind's been coming off that cooler ocean. mt. holly, 15 degrees colder than it was at this time yesterday. allentown, 13 degrees colder. and when we see thesis numbers tomorrow, they'll be in the 20s. we have showers at the shore. we have some showers across much of pennsylvania. these showers at shore generally on the lighter side. it keeps coming over the same spot. so, it looks like a continuous rain. lehigh county berks county getting heavier rain. the heavier rain is in the poconos. we have the southerly winds meeting the northeast winds. cold dense air, always wins. because it's more dense than the warm air. here come those winds. straight in off the ocean. and the ocean is unusually cold. after that cold winter we have. so once the cold air is in here, it's going to be hard to get it out. and this is the future cast. computer model showing what would appear to be some showers and thunderstorms by 7:00, 8:00 tonight. like around the philadelphia area and points to the south. and the temperatures go down and once they're down by tomorrow morning, they're not going up during the day. they're going down some more. so, take the coats with you, the heavier coats tomorrow along with the umbrellas because you may just need them. showers, chance of a thunderstorm this evening. turning breezy and colder. temperatures down into the low 40s. and then not really going anywhere tomorrow. if anything, going down. a little patchy light rain or drizzle. we're not talking about a lot of rain here. until friday when the temperature jumps up. thursday is almost a carbon copy of wednesday. but then everything moves and moves out. so, the weekend is looking really nice. a lot of sunshine comfortable temperatures, a little wind on saturday. so, we can get through the next couple of days, the weekend is looking good. >> all right. boy, that looks kind of rough. the cost of travel's really adding up. >> and in ways you probably never expected. it may seem like pocket change but all those coins you drop into the bin at airport security, let's just say it's turning into a small fortune and ending up in someone else's pocket. all new on "nbc10 news" at 5:00 -- not what you'd expect to see in the big city but this raccoon here had everyone's attention today. how long it took people to get that raccoon to safety. when you're going through security at the airport, you're concerned about a million things. >> but something you and millions of other americans are forgetting about and it's adding up fast. we're talking about loose change. the tsa says people are removing money from their pockets at airport screening checkpoints and forgetting to claim it. that money's documented and then turned over to the tsa financial office. then the agency gets to spend it on security operations. get this, though. the agency got a nearly $675,000 boost from people's pocket change last year. at philadelphia international airport, we left behind almost $7,000 in change. >> that's a lot of change. the agency released a statement that says the tsa makings every effort to reunite passengers with items left at the checkpoint however there are instance where loose change or other items are left behind and with more for us. >> reporter: that picture of the van extremely clear but it's key to catching the three men. they say that van was last seen on the 700 block of chestnut street saturday and about 40 minutes later down in southwest philly at a wawa. the van is burgundy. it's a ford econo line with white paint or some sort of graffiti on the side. police are not sure if it's there to cover the name
