think the most rain in years for a single calendar day. now we are watching the downpours line up along the coastline, areas in central mass getting the chance to dry out. let's zoom in and take a tour around the south, buzzards bay region, heavy rain around martha's vineyard, looking into parliament, sandwich, carver into plymouth, right up 3, heavy downpours, marblehead adding up the coastline into manchester and gloucester, ipswich all seeing heavy rain. that extends to the seacoast although heaviest rain is about to move offshore. this whole line is pressing to the east. also such a vivid lightning show out there tonight. pretty wild stuff when it comes to october weather. there is a flood warning in effect for the boston area down to way myth, stretching up the seacoast into coastal maine until midnight. water. sterling, 4.5 inches, nearly 4 in stowe, three inches in hopkinton and a couple more from our wbz weather watchers. generally 2 to 4+ across the region. a few more rangers plus a lot of wind in the weekend forecast. we will look at that coming up in a few. with five inches of rainfall that fast, it is a problem. >> roads flooded out so quickly in worcester the city tweeted out a warning to stay inside. a lot of people did not live in worcester. >> reporter: lisa and david, this is why the city tweeted out the warning. take a look, this is what many rows in worcester look like, simply flooded out. this is southbridge street, one of many major roadways in the city that are simply impassable. driving around worcester is a nightmare and as you can see, many people simply had to leave their cars. water about three feet deep rooted alexandra davis and her family. high. it was ridiculous. >> reporter: as they left dinner on park avenue in worcester. >> they were mopping the floors and pushing the water outside. that's when everyone started peeking out the windows and so we looked out the window and the water was literally skyhigh, wheels covered, door covered, no way to get in and we see the car wobbling. >> reporter: they took a couple of videos, firefighters showed up to help them across the street. without a car, davis and company called a friend for a >> all of a sudden i was up to my knees and thighs in water. his car was literally almost floating. then the firemen went out and said we will take care of that. >> reporter: paul, who has lived in this area all his life, admits the flash flooding was unique. >> i have never seen a flash flood like that. >> reporter: davis was ready to spend the night back at home. around but they advise people not to walk on the street because of manholes. the fire department had just left and there were cars getting into accidents, looking like they were floating away. it was just crazy. >> reporter: just before we joined you, a gentleman actually was coming out of this water because he had to get his groceries out of his car, that is completely underwater as well. to give you an idea of the scope of this flooding, 290 e. and west are closed. reporting live in worcester, katie brace, wbz >> major roads impassable tonight. staying on the storm watch through the night right now, 3500 homes without power, most of them in the worcester, framingham, boston area. eric is going over the latest radar, we are going to get an update from him in 10 minutes. also breaking, crews have recovered the body of a second victim trapped in a flooded out two construction workers were killed when a pipe burst, sending the water rushing into the deep trench they were working in. >> firefighters were digging through the dirt on their hands and knees to which the victims. our team coverage begins with nick giovanni live in the south end. nick? >> reporter: boston fire approach this operation in the manner you just described, sifting through a lot of the mud and gravel they were up against with their own hands on recognizing pretty early on this was a recovery mission. one that ended up taking seven hours to see through. the ominous hum of a vacuum, echoed down dartmouth street, well into friday evening in boston's south end. emergency crews spending hours removing dents piles of mud and gravel that stood in the way of recovering the bodies of two construction workers. >> there were workers and his police and water and sewer commission raised to the scene before 1 p.m., responding to reports of a water main break. >> we have had a trench collapse. is water in the trench. >> reporter: neighbors said the water rushing down the street toward treatment made the intersection look like a river. stuck underneath it all, members of a private construction crew. >> it looks like somehow a pipe must have broke and unfortunately they were not able to get themselves out of the whole. >> reporter: bo 12 feet deep. the mission to find the missing workers in it quickly became a recovery effort. >> i think it is going to be quite a while because they have to promote the whole before firefighters and rescue can go down and bring up the bodies. >> reporter: seven hours later, the recovery operation was complete. >> we have had a tough weekend here in boston. we had two police officers shot last week, the 2-year-old little girl, some workers here today are trapped. >> reporter: mayor walsh followed up that statement with another written statement tonight saying his thoughts and prayers are now with the victim's family. as far as cleanup efforts and investigation into what happened today, it does continue as well. live in the south end, nick giovanni, wbz news. we have learned the drainage company where the victims worked has a lengthy history of safety violations. wbz's julie loncich picks up our team coverage tonight. julie?
