>> reporter: boston fire approach this operation in the manner you just described, sifting through a lot of the mud and gravel they were up against with their own hands on recognizing pretty early on this was a recovery mission. one that ended up taking seven hours to see through. the ominous hum of a vacuum, echoed down dartmouth street, well into friday evening in boston's south end. emergency crews spending hours removing dents piles of mud and gravel that stood in the way of recovering the bodies of two construction workers. >> there were workers and his police and water and sewer commission raised to the scene before 1 p.m., responding to reports of a water main break. >> we have had a trench collapse. is water in the trench. >> reporter: neighbors said the water rushing down the street toward treatment made the intersection look like a river. stuck underneath it all, members of a private construction crew. >> it looks like somehow a pipe must have broke and unfortunately they were not able to get themselves out of the whole. >> reporter: bo 12 feet deep. the mission to find the missing workers in it quickly became a recovery effort. >> i think it is going to be quite a while because they have to promote the whole before firefighters and rescue can go down and bring up the bodies. >> reporter: seven hours later, the recovery operation was complete. >> we have had a tough weekend here in boston. we had two police officers shot last week, the 2-year-old little girl, some workers here today are trapped. >> reporter: mayor walsh followed up that statement with another written statement tonight saying his thoughts and prayers are now with the victim's family. as far as cleanup efforts and investigation into what happened today, it does continue as well. live in the south end, nick giovanni, wbz news. we have learned the drainage company where the victims worked has a lengthy history of safety violations. wbz's julie loncich picks up our team coverage tonight. julie?
