You see people crossing the finish line. Hannah storm and rob powers in his own personal marathon today. Hes going to change his shirt and tie and cover the world series tonight. Rob where else would you rather be . Hannah thats right. Rob who has it better than us . Hannah nobody. Maybe john, the chief marketing officer for tcs. This requires a huge infrastructure, a lot of dollars and support. Why did you choose to throw yours behind this particular john tcs is a technology company. We hire smart people. We believe that Healthy Bodies equal healthy minds. So we really wanted to support activities that promote health and wellness. This is a great event to do that. Its beyond a sporting event. Its really a community event. We really wanted to put our efforts behind a community effort. And whats a Bigger Community effort than this event . Rob its the big. Theres a professional commitment and then a more personal thing. This is not just a corporate venture for your company. This is the deal. John its not just about putting the brand out there. Thats part of it we believe the tata group is immersed in giving back to the community. Our whole philosophy of our business is to do that. We have about 60,000 employees signed up for some internal fitness programs. So were not only supporting community but were also doing it ourselves within the company. Rob theres no better statement. Hannah and over 300 Charities Involved here, too. So by supporting the race in and of itself, you support so many nonprofits and so many causes. At the tcs new York City Marathon. We appreciate your time. John thanks for having me. Hannah we have a little complaint by our folks on the other side. John, tim and carrie . This used to be their booth right here. And you and i have the prime seat here with john. So John Anderson has been pouting. Rob what hannah wants, hannah gets, john. John im not sure pouting but a lot of complaining, yes. The way it was sold, you were going to have this great new place. We were apriling where is hannah going to be. It shouldnt be in our spot. Right. Whatever. Its getting a little warm in here. Carrie stop it. John victoria is getting us milk shakes. We told her dont bring hannah one. Rob well stay in the tree house. Well be all right. John we heard john from tcs say we like smart people. Smart wins races. Today we thought we would get some of the magic again. And we did. But it was at third and fourth. Up top we had Geoffrey Kamworor and Stanley Biwott. And they put together a terrific race for us. Race. One of the lessons we learned is that these guys have to learn to race and think on their feet. This in many respects was like a games. There will not be somebody laying out the red carpet and then you start racing. This is racing in the raw. What was special about biwotts runs. In second place. Stanley biwott prepared very specifically for today. Nothing else getting in the way. The guys in second, third, fourth and fifth all race at World Championships in beijing 10 weeks ago. Biwould the in the middle having his focus biwott having his focus rewarded. John the top 10 finishers in there. And yuki kawauchi. And Jonathan Jonathan is. Back to you guys. Were here with barbara fin began a special finyingian, a special ed teacher. Right. Whatever. Just because you spend two years getting frozen you decide now you get that . Hannah exactly. John we used to admire your toughness. Now not so much. Hannah now im a wimp. And Meb Keflezighi, over 40, he doesnt show it. Masters records both for the american record and here in new york city. Carrie meb continues to go on and on and on. He is one of the favorites here thats ever run in new york city. Hes such an inspiration for us, american athletes and the entire international field. Its fun to see a 40yearold kicking butt like that. John no kidding. They ran about 20 miles and then really raced those last six. Did it get dark in it here . Were never in the dark. I know who not in the dark . Lewis we always remember who finishes second. Lewis . Lewis not long ago we received his medal. Youve had a few minutes to think about it. What do you think of your accomplishment today . Im very happy to get the second position. Its my first time here in new york. For me. Im looking forward next year lewis you are pretty young in the marathon. Youve only run six. This was your first new york. What did you learn about this course today . For me being my first time, i learned a lot about the course. The course is very nice up and down hill. Its very nice for me. I really like it. Lewis i asked if you were going to stay and hang out in new york and shop but you said youre going home tomorrow. Is there a celebration planned . Yeah. Tomorrow but have appreciation at home to celebrate my second position. Lewis excellent. Congratulations. Enjoy your trip home. We look forward to see seeing you back next year. Thank you. Hannah thanks so much, lewis. Back to the guy we were talking about a few moments ago, Meb Keflezighi, who is a dad of three, lives in san diego. Certainly you can make a case that he is the greatest american distance runner. Theres a case for it. A couple of other names could be thrown in in as well. I think you could now say safely mary keitany, right . Backtoback to paula ratliff. Shes won london twice, this race twice. Shes got to be considered one of the best of all time. Rob has to be. I was at the finish line when she crossed. It looked like she could turn around and go the other way. She was fresh as a daisy coming in. Back to meb, yeah, hes in the discussion for the best distance runner in america. Theres no discussion on who is the best ambassador for the tcs new York City Marathon. Its Meb Keflezighi. He comes back here and does the media tour and does everything promotional for this race that he can. Hes a joy to be around. Hes always got a smile on his face. Thats why people love meb in new york. Hannah and 104 days now until the olympic trials which will take place in l. A. So a quick turnaround. But, again, no one would bet against Meb Keflezighi being on his fourth u. S. Olympic team. Lets go out to anthony now. Anthony look who i have. Its superman and elvis believe it or not, they just finished running the race. Tell me your names. From california. Anthony congratulations. Superman which ran out of superpowers. Anthony when . About mile 21. The king was next to me and said im taking you down. I never saw him again. Anthony he took off and just started running and left you behind . Hes the king. Anthony or was he the crypt night . [laughter] i stole his kryptonite. They had a Peanut Butter and about a grant sandwich at the finish, so i had a little kick. Anthony how was it . Amazing. Like nothing ive ever experienced. The energy is unbelievable. Anthony how is the crowd . Amazing. The energy is unexplainable. Anthony really . Do you sing along the way by any chance . I hum hound dog. And it seems to help. Anthony really . O,yeah. Anthony how well did you do . I think 39 35 range . 3 36. Right around there. Uniform time, costume time. We have noncostume time. Also known as sub grate. Anthony your first new York City Marathon . First one as superman. First new york. Anthony hopefully youll come back. Oh, yeah. Anthony thank you very much, guys. Youre great. Look at these costumes, folks. Look at that. A big hug between elvis and superman. Were going to hand it over now to lewis johnson. Lewis, you got anybody better than those guys . Top that. Ill tell you one thing, i dont know anyone who knows more about here. You had a front row seat. What did you see . Tony interesting. Last year it was windy, cold. This year we had good weather with the tail wind. They didnt run. Course. A lot of that had it to do with the fact that our top contenders went to the beijing World Championships at the end of august. So they had to compromise their recovery and then compress their training for new york city. So they didnt attack. Its interesting. The one guy who had a full marathon training load in him won the race. Stanley biwott did not make the World Championship team. He had three full months of preparation. He brought it all to bear to his first major marathon victory. Lewis i heard you talking about the philosophy of those who only run two marathon as a year focusing on a big one like new york and others who can come out and run multiple. How are they able to do that, split it up like that . Tony the ones that do split it up dont end up being major champions. The major champions do a spring and fall marathon. Three months of preparation. One month recovery. And maybe another Half Marathon tuneup before your marathon. The year runs out real fast when thats your formula. But every other year youve got the World Championships end of august or youve got the olympics end of august, beginning of september. That adds that extra marathon in the year it compromises in many ways your third fall marathon. Lewis theres the expert. Look forward to seeing you back next year. Tony thanks. Always great seeing you. Anthony all right. Carrie im here with the Vice President Sports Marketing at foot locker. This is quite the honor today that you get to present. Tell us about the challenge. We had five runners from each borough competing against each other, called the race within the race. This year for the second year in a row we had our brooklyn representative come in and win the championship. So on behalf of foot locker and all the runners today wed like to congratulate darris on his win. Congratulations, darris. Carrie congratulations, darris crandall. Talk about the race. Darris my son was born with down syndromes and diagnosed with leukemia just before turning 3. He is a fiveyear cancer survivor as of september. I run for him. Carrie its a big accomplishment to run 26. 2 miles but to have that motivation and that smile. Weve seen him smiling since you finished. What will you do next to continue with his legacy and also just to keep your fitness darris i have the new york city Half Marathon in march. Ill be getting ready for that carrie congratulations. Well. Talk about what it means to be part of this challenge and to be focusing so much on others but also to be focusing on yourselves as well. Its an honor to be here thank you to foot locker for giving me the opportunity here. And to run along these great runners, its a privilege and an honor. Carrie how are you going to celebrate . Carrie nice. Congratulations to all of you. Were going back to hannah and rob. Thank you, guys. Hannah thanks a lot, carrie. Boy, has it been a great day. I think one of my highlights, though, is the guy that we saw, anthony talking to, a few moments ago who finished in 3 36 he said that was his costume time. It is so hard to run 26. 2 miles. How do you do that with a fullon elvis wig . Rob elvis didnt have a hair out of place either. Hannah and a cape. Again, we have just seen all manner of people. Some are better off than others crossing the finish line at just over three hours and 45 minutes. So for a lot of people the goal is to come in under four hours. Rob and now the rush begins again to break that fourhour yeah. Hannah when we were here today at the start of the day, as we were opening our show, we had a through. It was the youth race. It was 1. 8 miles. This is the First Time Ever theyve done this at the marathon. I thought this was a fantastic event. Rob what a great idea. Peter ciaccia wanted to include everybody in this. Like we said earlier in the broadcast, the motto, the theme for nyrr is run for life. And what better way to start than with the youth race. Hannah the two winners today, matthew, who won the boys. And then julie anne won the girls. I was out there as we were rehearsing and seeing these kids come in just so fit so strong. The best thing was there was mr. Met. Rob a long day for him. Hannah a very busy day. He has to bring his team back from the brink now down 31 to the royals. Rob lets see what happens tonight. So far the day has been a success for him. Hannah and the kids loved crossing the finish line and meeting him, just soaking in the atmosphere. You can imagine how many of them will be these people one day as adults. That run, the love for exercise and running and all of this. Something thats with you for a lifetime. Rob exactly. Thats why you start young. Thats why they keep on running. Lets get back out to the finish line. Anthony johnson with someone who just completed their 14th marathon. Anthony heidi peters just whispered that she happened to be in boston running a marathon and she was there when the incident occurred. Of course, the boston bombing. So, of course, being here today. How was it out here . Just beautiful. The atmosphere was amazing. Theres nothing like it. Theres no other marathon like it, even boston. I say city of new york my favorite marathon. Anthony you come from boise, idaho. What draws you to this one . Just the International Flavor of it. You meet people from all over the world. Everybody is so good to each other. Its really the best marathon in the world. Anthony how do you prepare for this . You follow a training program. You do it week by week. You run anywhere from 30 to 50 miles a week. You just follow the program and then taper it out and then run your. Anthony youre a nurse practitioner. This is good for your health. I hope so. [laughter] some people disagree. Him to no, no, this is something thats positive. Whats the energy like when youre out there on the course running through the different neighborhoods . You have all of those people applauding for you as youre moving through. Its amazing. You can really feel the different personalities of the boroughs where you run through queens or brooklyn. When you start staten island, its just amazing. Theres nothing like the start at staten island. Theyre playing new york, new york by frank sinatra. Bridge. Its an amazing experience. Anthony 3 45 this time. 3 42. Anthony dont want to cheat you absolutely. Thats right. To my colleagues. First of all, congratulations. Back to you, hannah and rob. They keep coming. Hannah thats right. Those two seconds are a big deal. Rob they mean everything. Hannah when you consider every second counts, which is hard to imagine after 26. 2 miles. The first marathon took place 1970 held entirely in central park. Finish. They were all men. This race has taken place every year since with the exception of 2012. You remember Superstorm Sandy forcing the cancellation. And then last record rob and among them are a handful of runners who tackle the marathon every single year and do not miss the new York City Marathon. They are the streakers. In a good sense. We thank them and we admire them. The beautiful sound of customers making the most of their united flight. Power, wifi, and streaming entertainment. Rob welcome back to the coverage of the tcs new York City Marathon. We have been with you since dark and early this morning. Our coverage continues. What a day. Weve seen the elites already finish and now we see the tens of thousands of your neighbors cross the finish line as well. They are still out on the race course. These are the people who you meet in the gym, on the treadmill next to you. These are the people that you see jog through the neighborhood. These are your neighbors and your friends. They are our stories right now. Michelle charlesworth is outside and among her neighbors right now. Let me tell you, anybody thats a neighbor of yours is one lucky person. Michele im giving few fives. Almost lost my hand. Some of these people look more relaxed than i look on the couch. Im with some wonderful women here. You date back to when . 1991 in high school. Michele tell me about her. Shes about to get here. We are at mile 16 at 1st avenue and 60th. Her name is karen. She got diagnosed with breast cancer, triple negative, when we turned 40. She went through radiation, double mastectomy last year, chemo, and now shes running the new York City Marathon. Michele shes a fighter. Shes got this. Beautiful. Give her lots of kisses from us. Fabulous. Yes rock it im losing my voice for a very good reason. This is just the best thing ever. Back to you guys. Hannah thats such a great story. I love it. So many people overcoming things, including this man here, james blake. In the quarterfinal as a couple of times here at the u. S. Open. A beloved retired tennis star who had scorocis growing up. I was with him a couple of weeks ago on the beaches in san diego. Today train on the beach because of that scoliosis. He still has it. He told me he wanted to finish in under four hours. He finishes at 3 54 and some number of seconds. And there you see hes getting congratulateed by david ciaccia. He is a wonderful or Peter Ciaccia. Hes a wonderful ambassador not only for his sport, has undergone a number of things through his career, broke his neck at one point and lost his father all in the same year. Lost his father to cancer. And hes running now for his foundation which raises money for cancer research. Rob then what he went through months ago. And to come back to the city and run this race that is such a part of the city. It almost has come full circle for james blake. Hannah i spoke to him about that, too, a case of mistaken identity in a sting operation. He was taken down by an undercover member of the nypd. He told me that his grandfather was a member of the nypd. Hes so supportive of the Police Department and the efforts that they have, certainly the nypd is a huge part of this marathon, of this race. And he said one of the moments he told me he was looking forward to doing would be to hug some of the Police Officers who are working here today. Rob as he ran. This is a perfect segue for us. The mayors cup challenge finishers are in. They are with carrie. This is just another great story of this tcs new York City Marathon. Is it not . Carrie a lot of fun down here. I still hear a little trash talking going on between the two. What it means to have the trophies brought back to your house . This is our friendliest competition. Theres no hockey sticks or boxing gloves. Im very happy that members of the fdny won the trophy back this year. Congratulations to all the members of nypds team. Everyone that finishes this race is a winner. But were happy to be holding the trophy. Carrie what does it mean you guys to be as active as you are but to help protect this city and what does it mean to have this awesome race every year . As someone who doesnt run, im always amazed that these folks can do this, can complete it and can be standing here afterwards. My hat is off to each and every one of them. Carrie congratulations, guys. Awesome job. And commissioner, talk about your team as well. Maybe if it hurts a little bit that you had to send the trophy back over here. Year. Year. Like the commissioner, i dont run either so im very envious of those who do. They all deserve to be applauded, both the winning team as well as the team that next year will be the winning team. Carrie what does it mean to keep everybody safe here today . Obviously youve been out here racing but now you have to put that hat on again and make sure we have a safe day. Thats correct. Working firefighters, working Police Officers. Protecting the city once again. Carrie congratulations to all of you guys. Were going to get it back to lewis johnson. Lewis thanks so much. Standing here with james blake who just crossed the finish line a few moments ago. If im looking at that clock, that was one of your goals. How are you feeling, man . James it was a goal, four thank you. You too, man. About half way through i wasnt sure it was possible. My trainer helped me a ton. Got me through it. I wanted to walk a few times. He wouldnt let me. I wouldnt let myself. Im glad i got through it. Lewis why was it important for you to accept this goal and run for the first time . James we had runners do it. I always new at some point i would. This was my best year. I dont know how Caroline Wozniacki did it while still on tour. But now that im retired i have the time to train. I wanted to do this, fight through a little pain to make sure others dont have to. Lewis when you think about the tennis, and how you were able to operate at the highest level, is there any comparison to what you just did . James yeah. Its so different. The mental toughness is there in both of you have to fight through about the last 10 miles here. Its just different. I trained my whole life for tennis. I loved it so much. Always have the differences, different players. Here its just you against the course. Its different but its so gratifying to be done now. Lewis i see something coming your way here which may be gratifying for you. James you got it. Thank you. Victoria congratulations, james. You did so great. James thank you. The shock lat shake she promised me chocolate shake she promised me. A woman of her word. I appreciate this. Lewis congratulations. Thats a great scene right there. Hannah i love it. Wife Ryan Ethan Hawke and his wife ryan. Hannah making their way in here running for the doe fund charity. James blake. Look at the number of marathon mentions, over 104,000. Rob thank you, social media. And thank you for watching. This. Hannah the tcs new York City Marathon is brought to you by volvo, proud sponsor of the tcs new York City Marathon. Rob four hours, two minutes, and 37 seconds into our race day, the 2015 tcs new York City Marathon. We are at the finish line. Rob powers, hannah storm. The masses, the tens of thousands of runners, make their way to us. One of the tens of thousands, susanna phillips, a very special competitor today. Hannah for most of these nonelite runners that are participating in the race today, their work life has nothing to do with their running life. But shes a 34yearold soprano. As she has found out, both of these things can be mutually beneficial. As you might imagine, all the support that shes getting from the crowd out there is music to her ears. The rush that comes when youre singing is extraordinary. Its all the nerves and all the excitement comes then youre out there. You just have to breathe. Then you get into this space that is just very intimate. My name is susanna phillips. Im on opera singer, carnegie hall, metropolitan opera, a lot of major houses around the world. I kind of think training for a marathon and training to be a classical singer are similar. You have to do a lot of foundation work, through your short runs, intervals, regular runs. Its the same as being an opera singer where you vocalize every day, sing every day, practice every day to get that foundation secure. I will say my singing has gotten better. My breath control has gotten a lot better with running. And also the way that i breathe when i sing helped my running get better. So in a way theyve helped each other out. I think that as we get to that mile 22, mile 23, 24, im going to be thinking what i normally think when it comes to a big climax in the opera, which is calm down, rely on your body, and just soar with what you have. In the marathon that is going to help me a lot because when it comes time to push through a certain point, i think that that ability to do that in an opera will help me in the race. [applause] hannah this winter phillips is going to perform the role in the new york metropolitan operas staging of le bohemme. Pretty cool. Rob and david is checking on her progress as we speak. David were in the thick thick of it. How is the opera training serving you out here . Really well. This is the time i have to focus and have a great time for the rest of the race. David its rare someone sings race. Im so glad i got to sing before the race and not afterwards. It was such an honor to see all of those people, the mayor, everybody on this amazing journey. Its been incredible. A tremendous honor. Hannah david willey doing yeomans duty. I love it. Running, interviewing at the same time. We had a bevy of reporters out there, too. I want to thank amy, laura, anthony, kemberly, michelle. Great team you assembled here today, my friends. Rob fantastic. We enjoyed telling the stories. Thats what our job is, to tell stories. Theres no better story collectively and individually than the tcs new York City Marathon. Every story is worth telling. Its just a fun day for us and a fun day for the runners. Its a fun day to see you. Anytime we get a chance to work with you. Hannah it was great. Were going on a few years in a row here. I know youre going to change over to citi field. The mets looking to keep themselves in the world series. Again, just a look at all of these everyday heroes. Certainly we start the day with the elite runners but what we end with is people running for charity, for some personal bucket list. Everyone who cross that finish line and even those who try is a champ. On behalf of our entire team here at channel 7, hope you have
@type":"Organization
archive.org
@type":"ImageObject
800
600
//ia803108.us.archive.org/16/items/WABC_20151101_180000_This_Week_With_George_Stephanopoulos/WABC_20151101_180000_This_Week_With_George_Stephanopoulos.thumbs/WABC_20151101_180000_This_Week_With_George_Stephanopoulos_000001.jpg
@type":"Organization
