mass followed by a meeting with raul castro. the u.s.-cuba relations. you're looking live at lower manhattan. thank you for joining us on on this sunday, september 20th. still dark outside, but it's going to be a wonderful end to the weekend. >> it's not too bad at all no. checking in now with amy freeze to see what is going on with the weather today. good morning, amy. a few clouds, and it turns into a niece september day. temperatures are easy to take, and it's 73 right now. such a beautiful afternoon, and we had a lot of sunshine. temperatures really above average. the front has come through the area, and right now, for the northern counties, but mid-60s for the suburbs. 71 for islip and montauk as well. here's the visibility right now, around a mile, not as quite socked in as we were yesterday, but still, we will have low-lying fog early on. the highs across the area, shy of 810 dries. north winds up to 20 miles an hour. the refreshing air mass is in place for the next few days. playing for the afternoon, high of 79 in new york city. we will talk about temperatures and the next chance of rain for the accuweather forecast. >> we are following breaking two people shot in the head and a third in the hospital fighting for his life. kristin thorne has the latest details. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning, rob. an active scene here. cops are walking around, canvassing the area, and as you mentioned, two people shot fatally, and we know that they have taken one person in for questioning, and it happened around 2:00 this morning inside of the raymond ingersoll housing. the shooting was not in the building, just along the complex. two pronounced dead at the scene, and 576-year-old man taken to the hospital in critical condition. i just spoke to a young man who live in the comet plex, and he said it's dangerous around here. >> something happened thereupon with the shoot, and now i guess if came here. >> reporter: you concerned about this. >> of course. i have a kid, and you can't go outside. >> reporter: again, no arrests have been made. police said they have taken one person in for questioning. kristin thorne, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> kristin, thank you. new this morning, police are searching for the person who shot and killed someone in newark. the person fired the fatal shot in the parking lot of a laundromat around 8:30 yesterday afternoon. police have not released the identity of the victim, and one no one has been arrested yet. a man was shot inside of a gun range in new jersey. police say the shooting was around 7:30 last night at the range in randolph. eventually a car was towed out of the parking lot. there's no threat to the surrounding community. in upper manhattan a man pled streets. police tried to pull over a white van in morningside highs, and the van ended up hitting another car in sugar hill two suspects were taken into custody no one was hurt during the chase. police thought the suspectings had a gun, but no weapon has been recovered. new details for the hit-and- run driver overnight. joseph galgo intentionally hit a man yesterday afternoon. the 26-year-old victim and the driver got into an argument earlier in the day. the driver had a black ford taurus when he hit the victim and simply took off, leaving him critically hurt. the suspect in the freeway shootings in arizona claim that police have the wrong guy. police say merritt shot four of the vehicles. police have evidence linking him to just four of the eleven shootings. >> i'm the wrong guy. that. my give up has been in the pawnshop for the last 2 months, weapon. bopped. he said he cannot pay the bill add -- bond. he said he cannot pay the bill adding he has two children to the police say the break came an example of reconciliation >> i have been saying florida strait is is the same as what the berlin wall was for pope john paul. >> reporter: cubans and americans who have traveled here are eager to see how far he can go. >> the winds have changed that john paul brought here, continuing with pope benedict, and now with pope francis, positive changes are being felt. >> that was sandra bookman reporting. meanwhile here in new york city, people are preparing for the big traffic headaches that come we vents like this barricades are coming up all over. the streets around st. path trick's cathedral, the 9/11 museum, and madson square garden will be shut down. >> i'm atrade. word. >> the pope will also go to the u.n., and 170 leaders will be in town for the general assembly, so the east side will see just a staggering amount of security. consider yourself warned it will be a crazy end to the week. eyewitness news is your go-to source for everything on the pope's visit from online to his schedule to mass abc7ny.com/pope. coming up, so, i needed to deposit a check. i was about to head to the bank, but out of nowhere it just started to rain. like really rain. >> amy, thank you. police are on the scene of a multiple people kill in the ingersol houses. >> reporter: a lot of detectives are still on scene continuing with their investigative work. we said two people died, and one was in critical condition. we learned the 76-year-old man has died from his injuries it happen at the raymond ingersoll houses it happen in the walkways around the complex, and we are told a man and 9-year-old man both shot in the head were pronounced dead at the scene. the 76-year-old man i was just telling you about, brought to methodist hospital, having been shot in the abdomen. no arrests have been made. we are told by are questioning one person. live in downtown brooklyn, kristin thorne, channel 7 eyewitness news. kristin, thank you. hundreds of refugees made to the hungarian border, but hungary is accusing crotia of sending them into the border without the proper work done. a boat explosion left three children badly burned. a 3-year-old is in critical condition this morning at the hospital and an 8-year-old and 9-year-old were also hurt. at the time of the blast. eyewitnesses heard a large boom and debris blew into the air. all five made it back to shore. a 22-year-old woman told detectives she was attacked on 125th street inest harlem. she was sleeping on the street when she awoke to the man sexually abusing her. in new jersey a41-year-old father and his 3-year-old son remain in critical condition after a near drowning incident. they were found at the bottom the wing of a plane clipped a fence at jfk yesterday. virgin atlantic was forced to cancel the night. the airline got the passengers on other flights. a story that will get a lot of folks talking or talking more. this is stunning video out of stockton, california. a 16-year-old accused of jaywalking, an officer trying to restrain him, and the officer eventually pulled out his baton. >> the situation quickly escalated with more officers on the scene, and now the controversial incident is under investigation. neil carlinski with the story. >> i was thinking what have i done to you or what have i done wrong. >> reporter: the video begin with the officer struggling with the teenager. >> stop resisting. hitting him in the face with the baton. what you don't say the police say is the teenager grabbing the officer's body cameras, refusing to cooperate with him while he was asked to move to the sidewalk while walking in the bus line. >> you pull out your baton, and you're hitting me. >> reporter: it comes when police officers are under microscope for a number of high profile excessive force here, eventually more officers arrive, put the ten on the ground, and arrest him. >> if people would just comply with the lawful order of a police officer and try not to grab our weapons or try to take them away, force would not to be used. >> so many incidents. >> let's just move on. people, discuss that in your a pie shop in texas is earning plenty of attention for its newest offer, asking customers to bring that their clocks in exchange for 20% off her purchases. what inspired that? >> and then the pumpkin flavors are out. >> it's officially fall when starbucks changes their cups. but this is artistic. will it feel fall-ish this week? >> tomorrow morning, it will be 10 degrees cooler overnight, and instead of the upper 60s and low 70s, like we did today it will be upper 50s, and i think that's going to get your attention, but that's not to say it's going to be chilly the rest of the week. 70s, and the first day of fall, 80 degrees in the forecast, and changes doesn't mean the weather cooperates all the way. we are seeing a change this morning with the cold front coming through. a couple of things happening. right now, the skies are looking good over manhattan. jersey, down the shore that won't last long, but temperatures are mild. winds have changed out of the north. currently 12 miles an hour, and the northerly winds with a refreshing dry air mass, up to 20 miles an hour. freezey at times, and the numbers on long island. 70 for massapequa and great neck, and closer in, the thick cloud coverage overnight, temperatures in the 70s. cooler for poughkeepsie, and monticello, currently at 54. visibility is limited, but still improving rapidly for belmar and toms river, where we have 2 and 5-mile visibility. and winds are coming out of the and right now, 12 miles an hour for newburg and the hudson valley, and that's basically been the top wind people the breeze is picking up to 20 miles an hour through the afternoon. that's part of the refreshing air mass we are expecting, and the this is using a shower. a quick sprinkle, not much happening with that, and the front comes through, and very weak. we don't see rain in the coming days either, very calm and mild pattern, and that's into the first few days of fall. it's breezy, beautiful, and 79 today. temperatures are cooler tomorrow. we will start in the upper 70s, and 75 by the afternoon with clouds coming and going from time to time. it's one of those days tomorrow where the skies light up, clouds roll in, and then dim everything, and they light back up again. the futurecast front is tomorrow morning a few clouds around, especially east, and then the clouds come and go throughout the day. tuesday looking like a mostly cloudy day, and we are socked in with clouds, and then wednesday is looking nice with temperatures back to 80 degrees. no major storms or soaking rains here, and things are looking nice as far as the skies go. the uv quality is good. index is at a 6, which is high. and ragweed and grasses are the main concern. it's a 7:05 game tonight. 8:05. i knew 1:05 wasn't right. good luck tonight if you're going to the game. it's going to be fantastic. you may need an extra layer because as the temperatures warm up, you may need the extra layer on the way home. the accuweather forecast, temperatures in the 70s through tuesday. wednesday, popping up to 80, and the numbers are back down to the second half of the week to near average for this time of the year. calendars changing, and weather easing into the 70s for much of the week, but it's not going to be a snap like that. the cooler nights which we have at least a come of 50s in the extended forecast, that's what leads to the color changing. >> that's right. >> the trees changing, and it's chlorophyll. >> mother nature is being gent toll us. >> fall and spring are beautiful seasons, especially in new york, but this time of the year, i know what is coming. >> you don't like standing out in snowstorms. >> i detest it. no tv reporter standing out there, shivering, stating the obvious, no one likes that. >> you don't like telling them to stay off the road with the plows? breaking news as we said in brooklyn. three people are dead in an early morning shooting. >> police are trying to figure out who exactly opened fire. >> hi, rob and toni, police just brought in the mobile mobile crime scene unit, and as you mentioned, three people were shot here fatally, police are questioning one person, and it happened around 2:00 this morning inside of the raymond ingersoll houses in downtown brooklyn. we are told the shooting didn't happen actually in the buildings there but in the walkways inside of the complex. police say a 43-year-old man and 39-year-old man were both shot in the head, pronounced dead at the scene. a 76-year-old man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and he had been shot in the stomach, and he died a short time ago, and i spoke with the young man living in the complex, and he said it can be dangerous around here. >> something happened up there, and now it happened down here. >> reporter: are you concerned about this? >> of course. >> reporter: police have taken one person in for questioning, and we are live in downtown brooklyn this morning, kristin news. >> new details on the search for a hit-and-run driver in the banks. police released this picture of the suspect overnight. 25-year-old joseph gago intentionally hit a man yesterday afternoon. the 26-year-old victim and the driver got into an argument the driver was behind the wheel of a black ford taurus when he hit the victim and took off, leaving the man critically hurt. also new this morning, police are searching for a killer after one person was shot in a parking lot in newark. investigators were on the scene last night after someone opened fire in the parking lot of a laundromat. it was open at the time. police have not released the identity of the victim, and no arrests have been made. also in new jersey, police are investigating the shooting of a man inside of a gun range, and the man's condition is unclear this morning. police say the shooting happened last night in randolph around 7:30. investigators eventually towed a car out of the parking lot. there's no threat to the surrounding community. rob? pope francis is on the road and making his way right here to the u.s., but he will start his first full day in cuba with mass in havana's revolutionary plaza. this is a live look at the crowd gathering for hours there. we will try to get that live picture in a second when we can. he was greeted by raul castro. the pope has never been to cuba or america. two huge firsts of his term. he will sit down with president castro before finishing the day. thousands will be at the mass, which is underway right now. pope francis spoke out about the refugee crisis. he told the journalists about his experience meeting with a syrian family being hosted by the vatican, and he said he could literally see the pain and anguish on their faces, and he told reporters to build little bridges on the road to world peace. meanwhile in our morning some families are being allowed back into their homes and neighborhoods after a devastating wild fire in northern california. the number of homes destroyed by the fire doubled as they took the count as officials were able to make it across the area across the 100 square miles of charred land, and some of the houses are completely just gone, and that fire broke out more than a week ago, and it's now nearly 70% contained, but it's still threatening thousands more structures. i guess at some point, people who have houses in a zone where they couldn't go to were allowed to go back in because certainly there's nothing left. >> it's devastating. >> i heard a crazy stat, it's the driest it has been there in 500 years, and it's really just an awful situation. the perfect storm, right? spots for ronkonkoma out to hampton bay, and also warmer for northeast new jersey by about 10 degrees, and the same for poughkeepsie. a handful of degrees warmer right now, however, we get into the afternoon, and it's cooler overall. 83 for the high yesterday after a cool start. we don't get that warm today, but it's going to be just a few degrees cooler, likely upper 70sin most spots. a sprinkle or two pushing off, and the winds will come in up to 20 miles an hour at times. the northerly breeze will feel high. place for the northeast, and that means we are storm free, and it will off and headed north. the van hit another car in sugar hill. no one was hurt during the chase. two suspects were taken into custody. the police thought they had a gun, but no weapon was recovered. a new jersey state trooper investigating an accident became the subject of another investigation when someone vehicle. he was work on a scene on i-78 when an unknown object crashed through the window of his marked suv. the highway was shut down for hours as police searched for empty handed. the driver of the initial injuries. a memorial stands near a virginia lake where a reporter and photographer [ laughter ] good morning to both of you. today is better than yesterday in some ways. humid yesterday, 83 today, a refreshing air mass coming in, feeling nice, and temperatures are going to be in the upper 70s, and already at 71. clouds with the cold front coming through last night, and the clouds kept the temperatures warmer at the surface, and we will start off warmer than we did yesterday morning, and we end up cooler by the afternoon. there will not be a lot of warm air moving in, and it's cooler dry air from the north. 55 for monticello. 70 for newark, and toms river out of the west, northwest. the northerly wind out of poughkeepsie, and it's a cool, refreshing air mass. and we will see breezy conditions at times. 15 to 20-mile an hour winds are not out of the question. you can see how quickly it scooted out of the west, edging into the the area, and that means sunshine for the afternoon, and temperatures just a little bit above average nor time of the year by a handful of degrees. 74 by 4:00, and the high today 79 in new york city, coming up, the week ahead as we close out summer, and the first full days of fall. toni?
