here's a little taste. tonight we have a winter storm we're tracking and the change. we're about 20 degrees colder yesterday. we go from setting records to definitely setting the thermometer a little warmer tonight in the house, as temperatures drop to near freezing in locations north and west of the city. so gusty winds at 22 miles an hour. that's making it feel even colder. we're off only by a few degrees from normal. this is what it feels like here's the large storm system. you can see the comma shape from omaha, nebraska through chicago, swinging down through atlanta and a lot of colors there to the north getting snow, right through chicago, wintry mix, then some rain. we will see a mix of the sleet and the rain. here's a look at temperatures. much colder, but is it cold enough for snow? not really. in fact, the watches and warnings we have posted for our area are mainly north and west outside of the city. these are winter weather advisories. what we'll get in here tonight with this mix is first sleet. that may cause some people to be a little concerned. however, it doesn't last that long and the changeover to rain will happen pretty quickly. slick spots. the longer we hold on to the sleet outside of the city in the suburbs, expect some icing to occur in those locations. and the only subfreezing reading that we've had has been newspaper monticello. that's a spot that could see freezing rain. surfaces are cold enough so falls on it, it will immediately become ice. 11:00 tonight, we've got pink overhead in the boroughs, stretching out on the long island, back through northwest new jersey. that will be areas of mix. areas of blue and turquoise off to the east will quickly change over for everyone to rain. that yellow indicating the heaviest rain is going to occur between 6:00 a.m. and about 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. it will all start to clear out to the east by noon. be ready to contend with a lot of moisture. so as far as the ground goes, it's really not frozen hard to where we would get a lot of runoff problems, but it definitely is cold. this is going to be a lot of rain in a short amount of time. flooding is a real possibility for streets, even highways and roads typically flood-prone. amount of time. overnight traveling could be a problem. it's really the amount of rain we're getting early tomorrow that could cause the most concern. by tomorrow afternoon even into wednesday, things are looking really good. the headlines you need to know for the next 24 hours is that not only is it much cooler, but you could get through the evening commute with no precipitation. the rain returns tonight. first, it is the icy mix and sleet in the city. then it's cold rain. it's sleet mixed with rain north and west. that leads to the slick spots that we're most concerned about for travel. tonight, temperatures do not get down to the freezing point in the city, but they will in some of the suburbs. it's that critical temperature point of 32 degrees and below where we really see problems. so the icing area in pink is where we're really going to watch for the most travel problems, northwest new jersey, through the hudson valley. tonight, we go to 36. the icy spots, again, mainly north and west. but if you're doing any traveling overnight, be aware that the streets could have some of that sleet or ice mixing in. 51 degrees tomorrow, so it doesn't last very long as sleet or even a mix. i think by dawn tomorrow, everybody's changing over to rain quickly. rain comes down hard and temperatures are in the low 50s. new year's eve, new year's day, temperatures will be 53 on new year's eve, then we've got 40s returning as we head into the weekend. still feeling a little bit above average for a couple of days. temperatures quickly return to the low 40s. so much more coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast in the second half hour. we'll try to nail down the timing for you by parts of the area, so we'll look across the tri-state. where does the precipitation start first, what time, and where will it last the longest? also heads-up for travel tomorrow morning, again, with flooded-out roads a possibility. i'll be back inside in a few minutes to see you guys. >> thanks, amy. speaking out, the survivor of a deadly shooting on live tv talking about that day and talking about her recovery. >> also, marlow thomas is back on the broadway stage. she talks about her role and how she first found her calling for the theater. >> and before we go to break, we've got a message from one of our local service members who >> my name is lance corporal carter. i would like to send a message back home to brooklyn, new york to my friends and family. . spending is up this holiday season and as you might expect, a lot of that is happening online. last year. online shopping, 20%. still did the majority of their holiday spending the old- fashioned way, in person, inside stores. marlo thomas, that girl. she is ageless! she has won four emmy awards, a golden globe, even a grammy award. she has been so successful for so long on television, it's easy to forget her first breakthrough came on stage. >> and to the stage, she has returned in a family comedy called clever little lies. it's running off broadway, which is where sandy kenyan caught up with marlo thomas. >> reporter: sandra, diana, the star was born margaret julia thomas, called margo until she had trouble pronouncing the became marlo. it was an early sign of her talent for guiding her own destiny. the stage is where it all started for marlo thomas. >> it's something wonderful. >> reporter: the stage is where she first found her calling. >> i was seasoned. i always say this to young actors when they say how do you start, what do you do? i say be ready. be ready for your first break. you might not get a second one. >> reporter: half a century after that girl left the theater for stardom on tv, a more mature marlo thomas remains true to the show's theme song. she's everything that every girl should be! >> reporter: she's also back in the city, telling clever little lies off broadway, playing a suburban mom with a dark secret in her past. >> looks like you're in westchester, doesn't it? and he'll in other things. i go, ugh! take me upstairs! i'm changing! >> reporter: one thing that has never changed is the star's commitment to st. jude's, founded by danny thomas, still supported by many celebrities. >> this is a place of hope, a place of research, a place where no family pays for anything. >> reporter: now, her charity work helped marlo thomas win the presidential medal of freedom last year, but what i find most admirable is how she lives according to the old saying to thine own self be true and does so with charm, yes, and grace, but also with a will of iron and a core of >> i do, too. >> that girl is why i wanted to come to live in new york when i was a little girl. >> right. i always wanted the hat. >> i said i want to be there. i'm going to be that girl! >> and you are!
