what appears to be thawing relations with north korea. president trump hosting japanese prime minister abe and resolving the crisis was front and center and in addition to president trump's possible summit with kim jong un. >> and i hope to have a very successful meeting. if we don't think it's going to be successful, mark, we don't have it. we won't have it. if i think that it's a meeting that is not going to be fruitful, we're not going to go. if the meeting is not fruitful i will leave the meeting. >> president trump said on tuesday that five locations are currently under consideration for a possible summit with kim and multiple u.s. officials are telling nbc news that singapore and sweden are among the front runners. several locations have been ruled out. all of this raise security concerns. bloomburg reports that the armistice signing has also been ruled out. mike pompeo's secret meeting which he confirmed yesterday morning. >> he left north korea, had a great meeting with kim jong un and got along with him really well, really great. >> all right. so the white house issued a correction yesterday on the timing of pompeo's of his trip to north korea saying it took place over easter weekend. nearly three weeks ago not last week as the president stated. jim mattis was asked about the status of the situation yesterday. >> i prefer you speak to mr. pompeo and the white house about those since those are the leading people in our negotiations right now. >> all right. speaking of mike pompeo, the senate foreign relations committee is set to vote on his nomination of secretary of state on monday and there is no guarantee he will be confirmed. pompeo was on capitol hill yesterday making the rounds in a final effort to win support. a meeting with mark warner as well as senator, partner of the armed services committee. paul said he would vote no and could be the final factor. he will meet with pompeo at the request of the president. the president remains confident in his selection. listen to this. >> i think mike pompeo is extraordinary. he was number one at west pointe, he's a great gentleman. i think he'll go down as truly a great secretary of state. i will say this about rand paul. he's never led me down. rand paul is a very special guy as far as i'm concerned. he's never let me down. >> turning now to the ongoing saga over sanctioning russia following days of mixed messages from the white house. president trump discussed where the white house stands. >> sanctions as soon as they very much deserve it. that is a question -- there has been nobody tougher on russia than president trump. we had a very, very severe, we were talking about it a little while ago, fight in syria recently, a month ago between our troops and russian troops and that's very sad. but many people died in that fight. but russia will tell you, there has been nobody tougher than donald trump. >> now, you may recall that trump's new director of the national council said that haley had momentary confusions when she announced new sanctions would be imminent over the weekend. >> i'm very happy to have larry kudlow with us. i've been on his show many times over the years and we've had a lot of fun together. we haven't always agreed but i notice lately larry's agreeing with me more and more which makes me happy. >> how's your relationship with president? >> perfect. >> his republican colleagues are setting up deputy ag rod rosenstein to be punished. yesterday the justice department said a potential investigation could complicate house republicans request for james comey's memo. he said he believes the doj cannot meet the republicans demands adding quote, i fear the majority will have manufactured an excuse to hold the deputy attorney general in contempt of congress. a joint news conference with the japanese prime minister, he said he has been restrained forwards the investigators. listen to this. >> on the mueller probe, have you concluded that it's not worth the political fallout to remove either special counsel mueller or deb deputy attorney rosenstein? >> nobody has ever been more transparent as i have. i believe we've given them 1.4 million pages of document if you can believe this and haven't used that i know of or for the most part presidential powers or privilege. as far as the two gentlemen you told me about, they've been saying i'm going to get rid of them for the last three months, four months, five months and they're still here. so we want to get the investigation over with, done with, put it behind us. >> all right. so there's also news of a settlement in the case brought by the former playboy model that claims she had an affair with donald trump back in 2006. karen mcdougal sued the parent company of national inquirer claiming she was misled when she sold her story. the settlement also allows her to speak publicly about her claims and keep the 150,000 payment from ami while the publisher retains rights from her story up to $75,000. mcdougal alleged in ore lawsuit, a former lawyer of stormy daniels never told her that michael cohen was involved. her tone tells to "new york times" that she was prepared to start written discovery. it could have provided information that would not be available through the material the fbi seized from michael cosen. cohen is under investigation. they are looking at his business dealings. he denies any wrong doings. the "new york times" reports that investigators were looking for payments to karen mcdougal and stormy daniels and he's being investigated for campaign finance violations a lot more on this story. as karen mcdougal's attorney joins "morning joe" later this morning. joining us is you nene scott. thanks for joining us so early. so the confirmation process for mike pompeo, the white house as we mentioned sort of stepping in to help it seems. do you think he's going to be able to secure the votes that he needs? >> obviously the gop is certainly hoping so. he's skating on thin ice. the major concern from mike pompeo is that he is too hawkish and they want secretary of state who would be a bit more diplomatic moving forward especially considering the challenges that people believe the u.s. government is currently having under president trump's leadership when it comes to working with foreign leaders. >> let me ask you about the comey memos because they're getting a lot of attention. republicans pushing for their handover at least to congress, but there are growing concerns that this could possibly lead to a showdown between rod rosenstein, the department of justice at large and members of congress. could rod rosenstein be held in contempt add is this going to become a show down? >> that's possible if you look at the republicans who are very much supportive of donald trump. they're being aggressive in their interactions with rosenstein and in response with their ongoing frustration and really believe they could be stone walling and giving them the information they need to respond respectfully to this as a whole. i would tell people to focus on the republicans in congress who are most supportive of trump. >> before we let you go, we have seen a number of blunders from this white house. larry kudlow saying that nikki haley seeming confused. trump saying that he did speak to kim jong un, the wrong year on president trump's barbara bush statement and the flags not being at half staff and trump tweeting about mike pompeo's meeting with kim jong un saying it was last week when it was march 31st. what does this tell you about what's going on inside the west wing? >> i think one thing you could think is it shows that there is an absence of a communications direct torr and perhaps somebody to get everybody on the same page, but many of these challenges existed before there was a vacancy there and i wonder how much it is that we're dealing with a novice group of people who have not worked at this level of government before. they're quite challenged. >> it's the turnover. i mean they're a year and a half into this presidency. they should have their sea legs so to speak. still ahead, in the wake of her passing how members of the bush family are remembers barbara bush. >> and mitch mcconnell said the legislation to protect mueller was not necessary, but at least one republican is still moving forward with a bill. those stories and of course a check on your weather when we come back. ♪ ♪ build your next big thing to run in more places, without recoding. the ibm cloud. the cloud for smarter business. ♪ whether it's a big thing, small thing, or something unexpected, pnc will be right there when you need us. because when it comes to your finances, if you focus on today, tomorrow has a way of working itself out. what do i want to be if when i grow up?day, i want to be someone who ... makes the world beautiful ... and builds up my neighborhood. i want to be someone who helps others ... and teaches them new things. every year, comcast employees and their families come together on comcast cares day to give back. it's a celebration of their year-long commitment to their communities. what do i want to be?
