trevor will get reaction in the middle east, with health secretary, victoria atkins, and secretary, yvette cooper. >> and in sport, manchester city to the top of the premier league, with both of their rivals, arsenal and liverpool playing lakes today. hello, good morning, thinks for joining us, here on the breakfast show. iran's barrage of drones and missiles was launched tonight. iran's first direct attack on israeli territory. but while iran says the attack is concluded, israel remains on high alert. israel's air defense systems brought down the vast majority of any incoming threat and no one was killed. it was an unprecedented attack and retaliation for a suspected israeli strike in the area that killed two uranian generals. our middle east correspondent, alastair bungle begins our coverage. >> reporter: the drones arrived in israeli airspace at 2:00 in the morning, these were intercepts over jerusalem. the holy city was under attack and the skies above our life, with the trails of israel's air defense system. the region had been on edge for days, but this was a bigger, far more dangerous retaliation than many expected. the u.s. government seems to have warning that the attack was coming. president biden cut short his weekend in delaware and flew back to the white house to be with his national security team he was watching and monitoring events from the situation room, as the attacks unfolded. the israeli military want people to stay closer to bomb shelters as the nation braced. >> dozens of unmanned aircraft were intercepted outside of the borders of the state of israel with the threats launched over 200. the idf does and will do everything that is required to protect the security of the citizens of the state of israel. >> airspace was closed over jordan and iraq. flights in the air headed for tel aviv were headed back. u.s. embassy told its staff to take shelter and schools in israel have been ordered to close for the next two days. the israeli military says the vast majority of missiles were intercepted outside the border of israel, but the few that did fall within the country only caused minor damage. the u.s. president has condemned the attack and what he says, is the strongest possible terms. he spoke with israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu and reaffirmed the u.s.'s commitments to the security of israel. iran's mission to the united nations tweeted to say that the matter was concluded and the u.s. and israel were warned not to retaliate. the attacks were celebrated by regime supporters in tehran. they might be satisfied by the response that israel has no choice but to retaliate. this could, still, be just the beginning. >> and alastair joins us live, from jerusalem now. so, alastair, an unprecedented attack by iran directly on israeli soil. the question now is what israel will do next. >> reporter: yeah. it is. iran, from its point of view, as i mentioned in my report is- - well, it is working on the basis that they have now relied retaliate into that attack that happened in damascus on the her eighth of april, and in their words, the retaliation has concluded. israelis may not see it that way. speaking to israelis, they don't trust the iranians, and so they remain on very high alert, either for further attacks from iran, or attacks through their proxies, from lebanon, syria, or yemen. no doubt in the top israeli political circles and military circles, another response from israel will be discussed, and it might be that they feel that such was the scale of the attack on israel last night they have no choice but to respond. i think they do, particularly, see the use of 120 ballistic missiles as being escalatory. however, the united states, their close ally, an ally that they have had differences with over recent weeks because of what was going on it in gaza, but an ally that stuck with them last night and helped defend the skies of israel, the united states will be urging calm. they do not want to be dragged into a bigger war. they do not want to see the region destabilized further, and so, i am sure they will be pressing israel not to do anything certainly in haste. whether or not israel's per minister will listen to the u.s. president, which he hasn't always done in recent weeks, we don't know. but this is a very, very dangerous situation for the middle east. if you thought things were tense here over recent months, it has just gone up quite a number of levels in the last few hours. >> alastair, thank you very much indeed. so, u.s. president, joe biden, has said he will be convening g7 leaders to coordinate a diplomatic response to what he described as iran's brazen attack. in a statement, the president said, earlier iran, and its proxies, operating out of yemen, syria, and iraq, launched an unprecedented air attack against military facilities in israel. i condemned these attacks in the strongest possible terms. i have spoken with prime minister, net yahoo, to reaffirm america's ironclad commitment to the security of israel. tomorrow, i will convene my fellow g7 leaders to coordinate a united diplomatic response to iran's brazen attack. well, our international affairs editor is here, dominic, and also our political correspondent, robert powell. but let's talk about the diplomacy going on behind the scenes. as we heard there, joe biden reiterating what he describes as u.s.'s ironclad support for israel. what message will he be delivering behind the scenes? >> you will be delivering a message, urging restraint, as all israel's allies have been, for a few weeks now, since israel's attack on the iranian consulate in damascus that took everyone by surprise, including the americans not told about the attack until israeli jets were in the air. so, i think the message statement saying is, they weren't happy with that, because they regarded that as escalatory, and they knew they would be seeing some breach of international law, an attack on the sovereign territory of iran, that left iran with no alternative, but to retaliate. but they have been sing to israel, we have got your back, with this retaliation happens, whatever shape or form it is in we will help you, and clearly they did. not just france and britain, but also it seems jordan, and a number of arab nations as well. we don't know the full details, but i think a lot of countries rallied around israel as these drugs increased. missiles were coming in. so, in the sense, israelis, we have got your back, with the understanding that you try to strengthen, no one wants an escalation into an all-out middle eastern war, which has been haunting the region, particularly by the attack from hamas, those horrendous massacres on october 7th, carried out by hamas, facing the biggest loss of jewish life, since the holocaust. so, i think the same message will be impressed on the israelis. we don't escalate things further, except that the iranians have had their-- when they have made their point, i think those are the words that joe biden used talking to the israeli per minister yesterday. so you have got to wait, but don't make matters worse, the question really for the israelis is, if you have been attacked by 350 missiles and drones, if britain was attacked by the number of projectiles by iran or any other country, would you accept that as drawing a line under an a fair yielded by the other side, i think that is the question. israel has to work out, visit deterrence, the power of its deterrence, which it has been struggling to put back together since october 7th, will that be served by not doing anything further? so, i think the allies will be diplomatically saying to the israelis, we have got your back, but also saying we are going to punish israel for this in a number of ways. the g7 is meeting via videoconference call this afternoon. the un security council will be meeting as well at some point today. so, there will be diplomatic punishment for this. you don't need to punish the israelis and the israel iranians further. the question is, to the israelis accept that? or do they feel they have to retaliate further for their own reasons? >> so, a lot of folks on israel's next move. rob, in the meantime, what has the uk response been? >> you can response, in terms of language, has been one of condemnation of the attack. but also urging the escalation. so, i think that concern of escalation, and that urging of restraint is present there too. in terms of the practical response of the uk has made, it is still a little bit unclear. we know that there was direct involvement, some sort of involvement, even if it wasn't shooting down drones last night for raf jets. they haven't yet said if the rf did actually engage in shootdown a rainy and drones are missiles. that is still unclear. we know that they have moved more jets under the decade old decade-long operation shade, as the mission to combat islamic state dietitian iraq and syria. so complaints were in operation last night over iraq and syria, not over israel. the mod did say that these jets were authorized to shoot down a rainy and drones and missiles, if they needed to. so, uk involvement feels like it was more second order to the u.s. involvement last night, this wasn't a joint u.s.-uk defense, israeli defense mission. it may prove that they have more of a support, but yes, the language of the diplomacy from the uk, condemnation standing with israel and its security, that message coming out as well. but i think, deep concern about where this could go now. >> rob and dominic, thank you very much indeed. just let you know, coming up at half past eight, joe phillips will be getting more reaction to last night's attack from both the government and labor. he will be speaking to the health secretary, victoria atkins, she was behind just a moment ago, and shadow secretary, evette cooper. that is coming up in the program just got it: 30. 30. let's to take a look now at the weather. cooler, as a risk northwesterly replaces a mild southwesterly flow, however, temperatures will be close to average for april. mostly dry start of the day for southern parts of england and wales. blustery showers in the northwest, they will become more widespread through the morning. some of the showers will be heavy on foundry, potentially turning wintry over higher ground in the north, and temperatures will only reach 11- 14 celsius for most of us. unlikely to get higher than 15 at least. still to come, here on the breakfast show, australia is mourning the loss of six victims in the wake of a mass stabbing in a shopping center. and we will tell you is still in contention, going into the final day of the masters at augusta. tiger woods certainly won't be adding another green jacket to his collection, after his worst of around there. and we have got the goals from the premier league, as newcastle moves their hopes of european football next. my name is oluseyi and some of my favorite moments throughout my life are watching sports with my dad. now, i work at comcast as part of the team that created our ai highlights technology, which uses ai to detect the major plays in a sports game. giving millions of fans, like my dad and me, new ways of catching up on their favorite sport. australians are mourning the deaths of six victims killed in a series of stabbings that a shopping center in sydney yesterday. police have identified the attacker, 40-year-old, joel catchy, from queensland, known to the authorities. sky's nicole johnson reports. >> reporter: horror in the heart of sydney. bodies removed from westfield shopping center. six people were killed on saturday in a stabbing rampage. police say the suspect is this man, jewel. and that he suffered from mental health issues. he was shot and killed by police investigator, who confronted the attacker on her own. >> we are continuing investigations in relation to him, his men, as i said from queensland. we believe he came to new south wales last month. we are, and have spoken with his family. we will continue to do so come and they are cooperating with us. >> on an autumn afternoon, the shopping center was packed with people. the man walked through, wielding a knife. some people tried to block him. the bravery of ordinary australians in an extraordinary situation. so far, no known motive for the attack. >> there is still, to this point, nothing that we have, no information we have received. no evidence we have recovered, no intelligence that we have gathered, that would suggest that this was driven by any particular motivation, ideology or otherwise. >> a nation in shock. families in grief. >> australians are waking up to try to deal with the shock and trauma that will come with what has occurred with violent actions that are unspeakable. >> fear and panic took over. this time the attack is almost unheard of in australia. the dead include sydney, ashley good, her nine-month-old daughter, was also stabbed is still in hospital. two of the victims have no family in australia. five out of six people killed were women. >> a lot of people running i do not want that happening. some people being fake or something, after some time i saw a guy with a knife running on foot to the cafe that i worked out. >> tributes for the victims, streets locked down. this beachside suburb has never seen anything like this. nicole johnston, sky news. >> we go live now to sydney and you spoke to australian mp, very good morning to us thank you very much for talking to us. a terrible attack yesterday on the shopping center in your constituency. first of all, your response. >> it is absolutely horrific, and my community is really devastated. you know? it is a devastated where the junction is a place that everybody comes to. it is the heart of shopping in the area. so my people are there every week. is the first day of the school holidays, and you know, everyone in my community know somebody who was either there or should have been there, or is connected. is a really tightknit community, this is incredibly shocking. >> well, yeah, and how much more detail is now emerging, how much do we now know about the victims of this attack >> we are still-- the families choose when we release the details of the victims. but we know that we have had a number of victims now, details released, and they-- their number of locals, people from different backgrounds who are just going about their business. you know? a young mom who was tragically stabbed and whose daughter is still in the icu. so, those are emerging details, and we still have, i think up to 12 people who are being hospitalized, some of those in a critical condition. so, we are praying, i think collectively, that not more people suffer from these commands just really thinking of everybody's families right now. >> and how much is emerging about the attack from themselves, the questions being asked about how this came to happen? >> look, i think questions are being asked, and you know, the attacker, we are still getting details about him. i think, for us, the reassuring part for the community is that it appears he acted alone. and that there's no future threat to the community, and i think that is the most important thing for people right now. you know, but i think people are very concerned about how it's got to this place. he was known to the mental health community. so, concerns that, perhaps this was a mental health episode, but he was dealing with, and this is what has happened. so, details are still emerging, and i think everyone is just being told to, sort of, let's not jump to conclusions, let's piece by piece methodically understand what has happened, why, you know, get as much as we can to understand why he did this. >> and clearly an appalling loss of life, but a feeling too that things could've been much worse if it hadn't been for the actions of one police officer. >> absolutely. it was incredibly fast. the reaction, in terms of, from the time that he started, he has effective rampage the time he was shot by a brave, local police woman who i have met personally, and she is absolutely remarkable, and just single-handedly went in there with no backup and absolutely save lives, and i think the other people are reflecting on right now that we have very strict laws in this country and i think we are very grateful for those on a day like today, because we know what might have happened if somebody like that person had access to firearms as well. >> you talked about your community being in shock. give us an idea of how people are reacting to what has happened. >> look, i spent most of the day at the junction, where there is a vigil of flowers been together. you know, we hundreds of people come and lay their wreaths today. we had the prime minister and premier and others. and i've just been speaking to people, a lot of people who were the shopping center, you know? and still dealing with their traumatic experiences of being locked up, perhaps a friend of mine who was separated from her daughter at the time, both in the shopping center, absolutely hysterical, in terms of her child. so you are hearing stories like that all the time, you know, people, retailers who brought people in, who were really heroic and i think that is the other side of it, while we are seeing these horrific attack play out i am trying to keep on reminding ourselves that there was one person who is trying to do harm, there were hundreds of other people who stepped up in the moment and did everything they could to look after, you know, fellow australians. and i think that is the thing we do have to hold onto. >> okay, well, allegro we really appreciate your time, thanks so much for joining us here on the show. >> thank you. time now to get you up to speed. jackie? >> yes, it will not be rory mcilroy's time at the office. he will wait for the green jacket, but it could be scotty shepler's again. shepler's again. >> it is the now or never aspect of becoming. because conditions might not be offered you, if that is in the next year, and are you mindful of that? >> yeah, for sure the thought has crossed my mind. obviously i retired, not to come back, but i retired to retire. so, nothing in this regard has changed. but you never know, obviously. things started to move, because now the potential of max maybe, i don't know, putting off a surprise. you don't know. so, i don't know if the old circumstance starts to happen or starts to open up. something to consider for sure. >> i know you have had some conversations. if that seat was offered to you, how hard would it be to turn it down? >> welcome i had conversations with him. not really about the seat. we did speak about the whole situation and short as well. but i did speak to others as well. i am still keeping in touch every now and then. i have some projects and ideas together we will see if they turn out or not, but yeah, so, i am staying in touch. i don't know. it has to be a couple more phone calls and conversations i guess, to really. >> this sky news sports bulletin is brought you by vitality. that is it from the breakfast this morning, to stay with us, trevor phillips is up next. next. in tehran there's triumph with their strength, leaders signaled that they have made their point, but they will strike back if israel retaliates. israel's allies urge caution , but the next step is down to benjamin netanyahu's cabinet. they lead today. we will get political reaction from secretory, victoria atkins yvette cooper, with live updates from our correspondence around the world. welcome to sunday morning, with trevor phillips. there is, of course, just one main story today. the iranian attack on israel, launched in retaliation for the destruction of its consulate in damascus. right now, the skies over tel aviv are clear, but this episode is far from over. the g7 and the u.n. security council meeting today. but in truth, the next move is in the hands of israel's work on it. to use the appropriate biblical metaphor, they have a choice. turn the other cheek, or an eye for an eye. let's get the latest from our team in the region. and i am lucky enough to have in the studio for today, our international affairs editor, dominic. dominic, what we know what is happening right now? >> well, trevor, after an extremely boring night, i think the onus is on diplomats to try to calm things down. for weeks, since israel's attack on the embassy, the iranian embassy, damascus flattened the consulate building, killing dozens of iranians, including a number of senior commanders, the west has been saying to israel, do not let this escalate into something much bigger. so, they have been urging restraint on israel. the first direct attack on israel. we have seen a shudder between israel and iran for years, but this is the first direct attack by iran on israel, that was clearly a sign that they will not listen to those calls. i think the pressure now, is on israel to show restraint. and so, western diplomats will be saying to israelis that we have got your back, diplomatically. and they will be saying you don't need to take this further. now, they made it clear, at least publicly, they had said that they deem this public affair, israelis are skeptical about that, they say there could be more to come. i think the question for the west is, if the west was attacked by 350 drones, missiles, ballistic missiles, with they think that it was now over, in terms of would you just turn it over to diplomats, or would you feel you had to retaliate? well, israel has to retaliate, it has to strike back now, it is a question of who has the last word here, will they be reassured by the diplomatic entity or feel that they have to do something out for what iran did overnight? >> well let's get a sense of the mood in israel now, from our colleague, alastair bungle. good morning, allie. what is the situation there? is the action, for the moment, over? >> reporter: i mean, right now as we speak on sunday morning, the action is over, after what was a very tense, busy, and noisy night. i don't suspect many people here got much sleep. things are pretty quiet here this morning, sunday morning. it is the start of the working week year, and across the middle east. but schools have been shot for today, and for tomorrow. and the airspace has reopened. so, that is a positive side. gatherings have been limited in number, and so, the country-- if they went to sleep at all, is waking up to what happened overnight, and trying to understand what comes next. as you were discussing with dominic. on the one hand. given what israel did by carrying out this attack in damascus, killing a senior by rgc commander. the fact that italian's retaliation did little damage, materially, here in israel. there is an airbase that is functioning, one child was badly injured by shrapnel, but so far that is the only casualty that we know of so far, and most of the drones of the missiles were actually shot down before they even got injuries into the airspace. you take all of those things together, and it is turned out pretty well for israel. but there's more for now, that is not enough. it is about image. it is about restoring and underlying the deterrence. and that mutual deterrence that has existed for years between israel and its enemies, hezbollah in the north, iran, well, that has been eroded a big-time. and that is why the israelis might feel that they have no choice but to reassert. >> just -- just, let's talk about it, dominic. what is the mood in israel? because, of course, the war cabinet isn't just considering military question, but also political questions. what is the pressure in israel today? >> reporter: well, i mean-- the dynamic has shifted over the last six months as the war has gone on. immediately after october the seventh, there was sort of a unity in israel that i haven't really experienced for some time, not during its latest benjamin netanyahu government, but as the war has gone on, that has eroded. support for the idea of peace is very strong. support for benjamin netanyahu does not. support have different reasons for wanting to see him thrown out of office. whether it is his handling of the war, whether it is the fact that he did prevented happening in the first place, or it is because a no hostage deal has been agreed. incidentally, on that, it has gone slightly unnoticed. hamas came out this morning and said they reject the latest puzzle, so that is a big blow there. when it comes to what happened last night, i think you'll find the country is broadly supportive of the government on that. you ron is seen as the big threat to israel. everything else, its proxies are small. iran is the big threat to israel. so, israelis will be supportive of that government and their military in taking what action is necessary to keep them safe. >> so, thanks very much. i think we will do it again a bit later. dominic. we know that the g7 nations are going to have a call today. what impact-- what are they going to say? and what impact do you think that might have on the situation? >> yeah. joe biden is convening the g7 cup group of industrial nations, midafternoon i called, and will also have un security council meeting as well at some point later today. in new york. and i think they will be trying to choreograph a united call for calm and restraint in the region. you know, this is a very dangerous grade moment for the region. the most dangerous moment, i think, since october 7th. and there is a huge potential for this to escalate further. if there are further attacks coming from iran that could, obviously, lead to escalation but also israel if it retaliates in any number of ways , could leave this into a deeper and more worrying escalation. i mean, iran's air defenses are no match for israel, so it will be tentative for israelis to lunch strikes in retaliation for what has happened overnight, and if they strike something and kill a number of iranians, iranians will need to understand, they have already said if israel does retaliate they will retaliate much stronger than they did last night. so, it is a dangerous situation, and diplomatically, the worst will be urging israel and iran to calm down to say, to draw a line beneath this, and not carry out any more actions, like an attack on the embassy in damascus, or like this unprecedented missile attack overnight. so, we can back from the brink. >> okay, we will talk further in a moment. but it has really been saying, per minister condemned the iranian attack and he said he'd the uk will continue to stand up for israel's security, and that of all our regional partners. so, let's get the latest from the uk governments this morning. a little earlier i spoke with the health secretary, victoria atkins. victoria atkins, your reactions to events overnight in the middle east. >> well, this was a significant attack, by iran on israel. it is a huge relief to everyone, concerned that the reports from israel suggest that the injuries and the cost to the local population was as small as it appears to be at the moment. though, i am very conscious this is a moving situation, and more details will emerge. but we want to ensure now that this does not escalate. so, our message to everyone is that we have to contain this. we have to work with israel to ensure that they are supportive , but to do so in a way that helps to de-escalate tensions in the region. because this is not what any of us wanted. >> we will come to the issue of the escalation. but just dealing with last night, what can you tell us about the involvement of british forces? >> well, again, i will say this rather not today, this is a life situation, a light military situation, so i am strained for details i can provide at this time, but the british jets, uk jets, were sent to the region as part of what is called operation shader, which is what that means is basically bolstering our resources in the region. that happened overnight. but i can't go into further details, i'm afraid, as to what those jets did overnight. >> broadly speaking, this has been an operation, which involves us, the americans, the jordanians, dealing both with iran, but also the terrorist threats that invest the region? >> well, we, of course, have already, for several months now, worked with our international-- the international partners to tackle the attacks by who the rebels in the red sea, but apart from that, obviously also have longer standing commitments in the region, as i say, all of our efforts at the moment are de-escalating. we do not want this to go any further, because we can all see the human cost to this and we do not want a miscalculation or an escalation because that will take it's toll. >> one more thing, the answer may be the obvious, but what is the official advice now to british travelers and, indeed, britain in the region. >> that is really important, so, anyone in their region visit the website, that has been cut kept up-to-date and reviewed constantly. we will appreciate the different pieces of advice for different parts of the region, but in terms of travel for the region, again, look at the fcdo website, we have been clear of which areas we do not trouble too, so we want people to look at the website for the most up- to-date information. >> that advice has been viewed, and you expected to change? >> again, i am the hands of fcdo, the foreign office, the assessments officials will make up the foreign office, it is genuinely kept undercut and review, not just as a result of last night's situation, but also in the longer-term, so, please check the website if you are thinking of traveling into the region. >> all right. there will be a call amongst g7 leaders, the seven less powerful nations, they will be meeting at the u.n. security council. but in truth, the next step is in the hands of the israeli war cabinet isn't it? what are we seeing to israel? >> well, the prime minister held a meeting on friday, he was kept updated throughout yesterday and last night and the calls already this morning and there was planned to be a g7 leaders call later today, and updates will emerge from that. but we continue to work and to support israel in its efforts, but again, our message across the region and with our partners is that we must not escalate this and just contain this and take time to what has happened over the last 12 hours, obviously, as i say a very very life situation what more can and should be done, but we do not want to escalate the situation. >> this didn't come out of nowhere. the iranians are clear that this action is a retaliation retaliation for the israeli attack on their consulate in a mask us. i don't know if you can tell us this, but does the israelis consult anyone before they do that? >> i-- i-- i am not privy to any such conversations if they happened. i hope you appreciate that. this is a defense matter, as well as a national security matter, so you will appreciate the circle of knowledge on this is very, very small. but in terms of our relationship with israel, we have been very consistent in our support for israel to defend herself after the appalling attacks in october last year. but we have also drained with international partners in saying that, actually the best thing for israel and the region is to be an immediate humanitarian cause so we can get hostages out. there are still people being held captive, get the hostages out, get the humanitarian aid into gaza as quickly as possible, and then we must-- if this is the future of palestine rest on, we believe, hamas no longer being in charge of the government, so, there will need to be a change of leadership and then the two state solution to be looked at in the longer- term. >> the reason i ask you this is that, as you said, we are a staunch ally to israel and sometimes your best friends are the people who have to tell you that you are about to make an error. no, i'm not making a judgment about this, but it is puzzling right now we don't even actually no officially where the attack on damascus is an attack, israel has notched tonight it. i wonder what we think the israelis imagined they were doing, and what we have had to say about it, because the israelis are not unsophisticated, they are extremely smart, they are experienced, they must have known that this would be the outcome. so, what do we imagine the reason for the attack on damascus was? >> well, i hope you will appreciate i run very cautious about what other international leaders may have been considering, when it comes to such delicate matters, but we are very conscious about the fact, as i say, that israel had to surrender attack to put against it in october. people in israel are suffering. people in gaza are suffering as well. i think we all acknowledge that there has been a great deal of humanitarian loss and cost to this, and this is why we want this immediate humanitarian pause, but in terms of the future, the prime minister will work with international leaders. we will, of course, there will be many, many conversations going on at the moment between our allies and our international partners, to try and contain this. >> the iranians have been clear that if there isn't retaliation they have been pretty clear about that. where are we on this? if the israelis say we have got to respond, because all of the reasons that we know before? will we support them? >> again, i hope you will appreciate, we are having to take this at a time, because it is a live operation. for the best in the world, i will have a running commentary, we will have to take it one step at a time, and there are so many other actors in this on the international stage. >> all right. >> it looks as though you will get your bill through this week. when can we expect to see see them taking off? >> we want them to take up as quickly as possible. >> days? weeks? months? >> we need to get our cameras ready. >> certainly within weeks we plan to have it within weeks. and what this is about is deterring not just the criminal gangs but the message further down the line that the uk should-- is not here. >> that is helpful actually. you have a carry yet? i mean, the air company said it wouldn't carry these people, who will take them? >> the home office is working on this, so i believe you me, the office is ready to go. a piece of legislation through. >> we haven't gotten anyone to take them through the. >> we haven't gone this piece of legislation through, we have had some real progress this last year, which is contrary, actually come to the trend we have seen across the european continent. >> okay. >> but this is one part of our overall plan to curtail the migration. >> all right, i want to be there, but it is something that you have to say about today. the smoking legislation, which is going to be past, i think this week, will ensure that nobody who is currently under 14 will ever be able to buy when right? >> yes, no one over the age of 14 will be able to buy a cigarette, the arcane traditions of the house will pass it, sadly on tuesday. >> is this a new kind of conservatism? is this depository is him? why not let people decide what they want to smoke or not? i don't smoke myself. >> no. >> to me this is absolutely about the conservative principle of looking after and protecting future generations, just as we, as conservatives are physically responsible. we don't want to hand on debt repayments that we have built up through the pandemic to future generations, which is why -- as well as managing the economy as skillfully as jeremy in the prime minister have, we also want to ensure that we are removing the taxation and work in the tax cuts we have brought in this month. >> but you know what they are-- addiction to nicotine. >> you know they will call you nannie atkins, don't you? >> thank you for that. you just put that in their mind, thank you. but no, this is about protecting future generations from nicotine. no smoker wants to take up smoking. they regret it. we want to stop children from doing that and taking off is very, very harmful habit. >> thank you, atkins health secretary, thank you very much. russia, of course, apologize to the health secretary, because i misled her into saying that it was 14 and under, in fact, it is 15 and under. in the legislation. now, let's get reaction from our panel, for my downing street communications director, craig oliver, broadcasting journalist, daisy mchenry, and former communications director, tom baldwin. craig, you have been through this kind of moment, i think more than once, and actually have probably been talking to your friends in downing street. what is the feeling there? >> well, we have bein touch with a couple of people in government today, the two messages they are trying to get across, when is support for israel, the second is a lot of the action to lace over iraq and u.s. missions were happening over there, and the planes in the backfield air to stop some of the missiles getting through, but i think the main message that they are trying to get across that they want to say today is that we are going to do anything we can to try to take the heat out of this. we do have diplomatic relations from iran. david cameron spoke to their foreign minister last week. missed minister gangs in israel. i think everything they are saying is, look, we need to just de-escalate. we need to take the heat out of this. and i think this is a big worry that benjamin netanyahu will feel he is pushed into a corner in certain circumstances in the neck couple of days, he will feel that he needs to retaliate again, that goes on and that is the victor. >> what is your estimation of where this is going to go? spiral up or spiraled on? >> because that is the question everyone is wondering this morning and i think it is also interesting to look at where this leaves israel's strategically and that people believe this may have been a strategic error, on iran's week. because in the last week israel was looking increasingly isolated, it was getting a lot of pressure from its allies, both from london, from washington, to de-escalate the war in gaza, and now everybody is, you know, noticing-- everybody is rushing to cozy up to israel, so that could this have been a mistake by iran? i think also, benjamin netanyahu's domestic situation might be bolstered by this. he has been getting huge protests, huge criticism from israelis wanting to see, you know, a change from benjamin netanyahu, but given that this last night went relatively well for israel, very limited casualties, could it have bolstered his position? >> tolman, we will come to the issues of choices in a second, but it is quite striking that a lot of this seems to be about signaling, rather than actual military advantage? >> yeah. i was thinking and talking to some one who knows far more about this than i do last night. benjamin netanyahu is among a number of actors released now, who wants to escalate rather than de-escalate. he wants to further war to shore up his position in israel, so he can survive, politically. and therefore, unconditional support for his government and what his government does is becoming a very uncomfortable position for many of israel's traditional allies. >> well, that is interesting, because if i read the statement from the americans and also from the british, they have support for israel. not the israeli government. but is it possible, in reality, to make that decision? >> i think in the end you are going to have to. proportionate self-defense does not usually involve bombing an embassy in another country. it is becoming -- you know, israel cannot function alone, without its allies, and benjamin netanyahu is making israel quite lonely right now. >> and i think it is very interesting, i don't know if i'm reading too much into it, but what craig said about the foreign office being in touch with benny against, not benjamin and yahoo. benny against is benjamin netanyahu's number one opposition, who is calling for collections, reminding people that benjamin netanyahu is facing corruption and war crimes etc. >> he is in the war cabinet. >> yes, just last week he was saying that 70.7% of the population once elections in september, that maybe his support for benjamin netanyahu in this emergency war government is-- the support is spreading thinner. >> i think what we are seeing here, it is hard to see what the trajectory is, isn't it? the long-term trajectory. at the moment, after last night, benjamin netanyahu's position has been posted. the president of the united states has had to come out, david cameron come out to make very clear what side they are on, and also make clear that iran needs get back in his box. regimen and yahoo will like that. whether or not that last long term is the question. he is a deeply unpopular figure in israel, but the more that israel seems to be under threat, the more chance, i think, he has. >> and what is striking here is that, almost every thing that happens is to reduce everybody's choices. the americans can't now lean on netanyahu, because that might look disloyal. the opposition in israel can't follow-up on their-- you know, their pressure for elections, because then that looks like you are breaking up the coalition, and so on. is there a real problem here that there may be a kind of-- a situation, in which everybody is forced into the wrong position, simply because of the rush? >> yes, i think that is a real concern. before this was happening, we were waiting-- certainly in israel they were waiting for some sort of retaliation to the attack that tom mentioned, to come. meanwhile, the far right coalition government was making netanyahu promise to going on that offense rafah, saying that unless the hostages are released, we want you, netanyahu, to relieve this invasion into rafah, so you have a situation, where things are looking more and more out of control. as tom said, we have got netanyahu clinging on, because he knows the minute he loses his grip, his political career is over. and you have got two nuclear nations. and, given that trump pulls out of the iran deal, back in 2018, it really-- it is a struggle to think of a worse situation. >> tom, are you comfortable with our support for both the-- the israeli situation-- the israelis now, and our government position? >> i think our government's position needs to be held to account. you know? we haven't yet seen the legal advice over arms sales to israel. what i do think though is, you know, i mean i look at this position here and i look to the criticism of labor's position, why don't you have stronger starts. i know what labor is trying to do, which is demonstrate that, in government it will be a stable ally, rather than somebody who will sort of try to posture for the sake of it. i think it is quite important that, in a very, very unstable situation, there are people ready to be stable, there are people ready to be grown up, and there are people always willing to compromise, because the events in the middle east are running out compromise, and striving out nuance, and people need to stand up for both of them. >> i was worried about the emergence of strong, but stable on this program, but let's not- - >> i don't like to use that phrase. >> yes, let's not. but craig, you have been through this sort of situation. talk through what have you been doing with number 10 today? what is the process? what happened? >> two things. benjamin netanyahu is the politician, and what he is doing is posing to the west. what would you do in the circumstances? and actually the answer is we would be pretty tough in return, so he is hanging over number 10. he will be sing what can we do to speak to our allies, the united states. there will be a g7 meeting that biden has come today to say that what can we possibly do to take the heat out of this? the world is deeply worried that this could escalate and not just military complement consequences, but financial consequences around the world. so i think the g7 meeting, burton will say look, we are reporting for duty. anything we can do to take the heat out of this we will do. >> briefly, what you think he will do? what are you thinking at this moment? what are his choices? if any? >> i think exactly that, to show off the duty of the g7 meeting, constantly unclearly and what diplomacy can be used around the world to take the heat out of this? we have got a limited role in that, but that means largely being behind biden and that you fully support what the american policy is. >> we will come back
