hopefully, a billion dollars richer. simone picks things up from here. >> greetings. you are symone watching. -- in a midterm election where the stakes could not be hire. and with election deniers on the ballots in droves, and -- it is more important than ever to make sure your vote is counted. we will be on the -- to talk to the democratic candidate for governor in arizona. we will talk with kari lake -- we will get into it. also, let me say it again because we can't say it enough. democracy is literally on the ballot. nbc news has details from a new report with disturbing findings about election deniers, running for state legislatures in key battleground states. and the impact on the 2024 presidential election if they win. plus, we are speaking to someone deep in the battle for democrats to hold on to control of the house. amelia sykes is running for congress in a newly drawn district in ohio. she has lots of support. but will that get her across the finish line? i am symone and i have something to say. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> we are officially in the single digits, people. that's right! only nine days remain until the november midterms. one and 20 million people have cast their ballots. we have eyes on every balloon ground race including the state of arizona, we are 819,000 people have already voted. arizona's democratic secretary of state, katie hobbs, is facing off against election denying republican kari lake. and gubernatorial race -- her campaign has boosted her two superstars status among supporters of the maga movement. 5:38 finds that their average -- lake has pulled almost two points ahead of hobbs at 48.5%. that is tight. and within the margin of error of most polls. on the ground, this race has been riddled with incendiary rhetoric and conspiracy theories from the republican nominee. hobbs campaign headquarters was even robbed recently. there is no evidence yet that the burglary was politically motivated. but the hobbs campaign said in a statement, let's be clear, for nearly two years, kari lake and her allies have been spreading dangerous misinformation and inciting threats against anyone they see fit. the steps against arizonans excepting -- and their top on election officials are the direct results of a concerted campaign of lies and intimidation. kari lake had a response and he responded by suggesting that the break in was staged. she offered no evidence to support this. so, yet again, another baseless claim. you will remember that arizona was one of the primary targets of former president donald trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election. and the days that followed that election -- trump supporters descended on the elections office to intimidate election officials, some were even arms. now with early voting underway in 2022, poll watchers are hiding their faces. they're outside the elections department again and they say they are hoping to catch signs of what they believe to be voter fraud, but what they're actually doing is intimidating and, frankly, trying to scare voters. a group called protect democracy, on behalf of the arizona chapter of the league women voters, put up a restraining order to stop these people from terrorizing -- on friday, a district judge rejected that motion. so, look at the rate in arizona tell us about the strength of our institutions and the future of our democracy? joining me now to help answer those questions is the arizona secretary of state, democratic candidate for governor, katie hobbs. welcome to you, madam secretary. what do you have any new details on the robbery of your campaign office? >> we don't. just that the investigation is ongoing and we are cooperating with law enforcement and we are incredibly grateful to them for their quick and thorough response to this burglary. >> let's take a look at the overall landscape here. i want to put this in perspective for folks at home. you are camping headquarters were burglarized. you have armed poll watchers lurking outside of elections offices. speaker pelosi's husband was brutally beaten in his own home, a man who was allegedly looking for the speaker herself. it seems dangerous right now. do you feel safe in this climate? are you concerned? >> we certainly are increasing the levels of security around me and our office here and my office at the capitol. and certainly we are in a climate of increasingly heightened vitriol. and we have political leaders, who are not doing anything to denounce this kind of political violence or rhetoric. in fact, they are continuing to bring it on even more. and i think it is incumbent on everyone, elected leaders, political leaders of either party, to denounce this violence, so we can get back to a sense of normalcy, where elected officials can work together to get things done. and members of congress and election officials and others don't need to walk around in fear everywhere that they go. >> what about poll workers? and the voters themselves, frankly. you are their current secretary of state and i need to imagine that your office is taking a hard look at this, so what are you all going to do to make sure that voters are safe and poll workers are safe and you even have the resources to do this? >> we have been laying the groundwork and providing guidance and working closely with the counties and election officials in the counties. we know that this kind of activity was likely to happen. we have heard things about it. we worked with the county to make sure that they have a threat liaison officer assigned to them, that they can work on with these kinds of intimidating behaviors and activities with. and we have a rapid system of reporting and response and our office has referred at least ten complaints to investigative authorities at the department of justice and the attorney generals office. you mentioned the federal court ruling that didn't grant a temporary restraining order on this activity, so it is incumbent on these investigative authorities to act quickly so that we can ensure that every voter in arizona is able to cast their ballot, free from interference and harassment and intimidation. we will continue to monitor these activities and make sure that voters have the tools they need to exercise their freedom to vote and do so safely. >> meanwhile, this is shaping up to be a close race and your opponent kari lake has said that she is only going to accept the results if she wins. what are you doing to prepare for the possibility of, you know, lake not accepting these results? >> you know, i think 2020 was a trial run in terms of the kind of election challenges, the number of election challenges we would see from these sore losers. and so, we have been preparing for the kind of legal challenges that we think might come after this election, regardless of the outcome. we are focused on the process and we are focused on making sure that election officials can meet the statutory timeframes set up to ensure that the accurate vote count is able to be certified. we are prepared for challenges that we expect to come if you pull aren't hobby with the outcome of the election. >> i remember 2020 vividly and arizona specifically. arizona rejected trumpism in 2020. they elected president biden to the white house, sent a democrat to the senate. we have nine days until election day in this county. what is your closing message to voters? >> this race for governor in arizona is certainly not a race about democrats and republicans, it's a choice between sanity and chaos and electing a leader, who has the experience and temperament to govern and to lead our state and move our state forward and tackle the issues that voters are bringing up every day, affordability, our states water crisis, fixing our public education system and protecting access to safe and legal abortion in our state. my opponent does not have plans to tackle any of these issues. she's only offering empty rhetoric. >> all, right arizona candidate for governor in arizona, thank you very much. folks, i know you're wondering, we did reach out to carry lake, but her campaign did not respond. invitation still open, nine days. i want to share numbers with you and these numbers have a very frightening implications for the future of our democracy, we will put it on the screen. a new study finds that nearly 60% of all republican state legislative candidates and five key battleground states have expressed doubts or spread misinformation about the 2020 election. again, almost 60% of those republican candidates, that's scary, right? well, it's worse in some places than others. let's look at arizona for example. the number of republican candidates who are election deniers there goes up to almost 90%. 87 point oh 4% of republicans on the ballot in arizona have indicated that they think that joe biden is not our legitimate presidents. america's policy is made in our state legislatures, y'all. this is very important because if you saw some of the legislation we saw this year was bad from state legislatures, well, if these republican candidates get elected in nine days, the legislation that is to come will be much, much worse. i really can't say it any more plain than that. these people who win these elections will oversee and certify future elections as well and they will make new laws about voting in their respective states. i am joined now by daniel, the founding partner of the states project, the group that compiled this data and works for both state legislative campaigns. i want people to know that he is also a former state legislator himself, a former state senator from new york. you are more than qualified i think to be leading these efforts. let's show folks the stakes that you investigated for 2022. arizona, nevada, minnesota, pennsylvania and new hampshire. daniel, spell this out for us because these are all states that are very important when it comes to the electoral college and that cannot be a coincidence. >> absolutely, and you talked about it in terms of policy and we just heard the secretary of state in arizona talking about it in terms of democracy. the answer is, it's both of those things. every one of these is a close swing state, we have a majority of republican lawmakers, who have signaled that they do not believe and legitimate election results. and the stakes are already high, but as we head towards 2024, it will shock many people to know that the supreme court is sharing a case now that would give them even more power, absolute power over federal elections, without any say in their states from the courts or the governor. today, every swing state in america has a republican legislature, save minnesota, which is one of the closest races this year. if they have a majority of legislatures and they have a unique power to determine who won, whatever the will of the people's, well, that risks very democracy itself. >> you know, you talk about the supreme court case and i think it is very important that people understand what is happening here. the supreme court has agreed to hear this case. and it is really based on this theory that is being peddled in right-wing circles. it's astounding that it is made it up to the highest court in our country. it has been called the most serious threat to american democracy and the most significant case of this court's term. can we just have a little deeper into this because this case really stands to give potentially unchecked power to state legislatures across the country? >> that is exactly what it does and across areas, this case is about the way congressional maps were drawn in north carolina. they were drawn fairly. the state supreme court stepped in and now the state supreme court -- does it have that authority? that is the narrowest way -- it is about theories that we have seen come out for the january six committee here about whether the state legislatures, after an election, can ride in and overruled the will of the voters. and you know, the idea here, sort of, is impossible to take seriously, but for the fact that four members of the supreme court have already signaled that they believe this and this is the idea that state legislatures themselves, not even state governments, are able to act without the government, without the state courts, with enormous authority, even to override the rid of the voters or to violate other basic laws that are on the books. >> it should be for scary for everyone who is, even if you're not paying attention, if you are watching the show look at potentially happen is quite concerning. the project that you have undertaken, and you are calling it the states project you, all have really set your sights on protecting the integrity of the 2024 elections we talked about it on the show that over 6000 state legislators are on the ballot in 2022. you are targeting the states we talked about, arizona, of eta, minnesota, michigan, and pennsylvania. what's your strategy here in the states for 2024 to protect the elections, but also 2022? well, in some cases, due to policies passed by republican state legislatures, mail-in ballots are going to take some time to process and count. more than 22 million ballots, well, people have already voted this years, ballots have been cast -- that's a lot of people. some of those votes were mail-in ballots, including people all across this country. the majority of the country, mail in ballots cannot begin to be counted until election day. in 16 states, in the district of columbia, counting can begin until after the polls close. in a competitive race, these mail-in ballots could decide the winner. so, we likely will not know on election night who is victorious and some of the nation's most consequential elections. that means we might not know who has control of the senate or the house or -- while you wait for those ballots to be counted, please make sure -- republican college station -- as evidence of fraud -- it is actually the opposite. there is not a single state in this country that has all of its votes counted on election night. on november 8th and on the days following, when you hear this disinformation, reminder self, delay does not equal fraud. let's bring in our political panel for today. she is the political writer for the l.a. times. congressman joe walsh is also with us. and the good michael tubs as here, the former mayor of stockton, california. welcome to you all. congress -- we are already seeing some of the same disinformation and frankly intimidation that led to chaos in 2020. the secretary of state in kara zona had something to say about developments in our state. how prepared you think we are as a nation to navigate? this >> good to be with you. i don't think we are prepared. this is our first national elections since one of our two major political parties tried to violently overthrow an election. and gosh, it does not seem like most of the country sufficiently understands how my former political party, the republican party, is attacking our democracy. i think 2020 was just the beginning. i think 2022 will be worse and so will 2024. my former party is dead set on killing our elections and i don't think america gets that yet. >> people need to be vigilant. when you look at polling, democracy, concerns for democracy, have crept up into the top five, top three of pulling. but the economy and inflation are also still top concerns for voters. republican candidates have been hitting democrats very hard on those issues. they don't talk about democracy. they are trying to -- mayor, we have democrats that have been campaigning on the economy with specific plans to address inflation and whatnot, but i feel like it goes on heard and many places across the country. you have got president obama yesterday, on the campaign trail, and he made a very interesting case that i want to play for you guys. take a listen. >> we have long hours and sore backs and that needs to get that social security. and if ron johnson does not understand that, if he understands that there are tax breaks for private planes more than he understands making sure that seniors who have worked all their lives are able to retire with dignity and respect, he is not the person who is thinking about you and knows you and sees you! and he should not be your senator from wisconsin! [applause] >> that is president milwaukee -- he had them caring about social security. what do you think about that? >> i think it goes to show us that it is the message and the messenger. people care about the economy and inflation, but the message needs to be delivered passionately. president obama -- >> i thought it was a preacher or somebody who was very passionate about the future of democracy. also the future of people's paychecks and pocketbooks. democrats have been wise -- i think the delivery of the message resonates with people. the stakes are high and it's not just talking about what's wrong with the other side. it is -- lower insulin costs -- paved roads and bridges -- bring back the child tax credit. if we keep doing, that we will be happy on november 8th. >> you have mayor tubs talking about the message and the messenger. the messenger in this case is president obama and we have seen him hit the campaign trail for the last few cycles. but how are the dynamics different at this particular moment in our politics? >> i think there are a number of things going on. democrats are trying to do dual messaging. -- they need to be cognizant that people are feeling pain when they fill up their gas tanks are when they go to the grocery store, but at the same time, democracy is at stake in this election. it is a dual message that i think some democrats are having more success with and others. they are out canvassing with candidates over the last couple days and -- certainly, when you talk to voters, when you go knock on doors, voters are not bringing up democracy. they're not bring up january 6th. when the candidates press them on, them they do bring it up. but the first thing they talked about was the economy. it was the trouble they were having making ends meet. what can you do about inflation? what can you do about gas prices? i think that's really an area where democrats need to -- find the balance of discussing the broad issues that matter. the future of democracy -- and also discuss issues that people discuss every day. >> you know, i think this is absolutely key. democracy is an overarching umbrella issue. the thing that's close to these voters are their kitchen table issues, like people like a site. for some people, that is in fact abortion. i want to talk about early voting, particularly in new york. it began yesterday, on a saturday. this was after a very long and what i would argue a messy process. republicans are actually better position for a victory in numerous house races, but also in the governor's race itself. i'm talking about new york state. republican lisa eldon is facing off the democrat kathy -- her lead over him has narrowed. mayor, what what a new york gubernatorial victory mean for the republican party? >> it would be a great win for the republican party but terrible for the rest of the u.s.. we talk about the republican party, a party that has dedicated itself to fascism, anti-democratic, anti-choice and pro oligarchy. any gains they get, any thing that shows that they are getting momentum is perilous for democracy and for our future. for folks in new york watching, vote. make sure your cousins about. make sure your aunties, everyone votes. we can't concede any ground, particularly in this battle we're having right now. >> obama talked about -- to the polls today. stick around. my panel is not going anywhere. we have more to chat about. after the break, we are gonna get into the aftermath of that harrowing attack on speaker pelosi's husband by a suspect he was reportedly looking for her. and the dangerous political discourse in our country, that's up next. i also want you all to send me your questions on the midterm elections. text me. i've got that for a two number. you can tweet me. i'm gonna have answers on tuesday's show. send in your questions, y'all. we will be right back. will be right back. so, for me and the hundreds of drivers in my fleet, staying connected, cutting downtime, and delivering on time depends on t-mobile 5g. and with coverage of over 96% of interstate highway miles, they've got us covered. >> simone, i think we first need to understand really what the problem is. coming from the republican party, like i do, your audience needs to understand that the base of the republican party is not fully radicalized. what that means is that they are and tethered to truth and they are open to violence. the attack on pelosi, what was? that that was an attack against speaker pelosi, if she had been home, the speaker of the house probably would have been killed and yet you look at the reaction from republicans on the, right it should have been in unison condemning that attack. but it was not. the conspiracy and the lies began forming, and unfortunately, i think a post republican voters now question what really happened there. that is horrible. >> you know, congressman, this point, i think, is key, it's unfortunate but absolutely key because, like clockwork, y'all, there has been a storm brewing of right conspiracy theories. there are folks out there whose theories are claiming the attack was staged, they claim the attack was a cover-up. you've got elon musk who is now the new owner of twitter. he, himself, shared one of these fantasy articles, 112 million followers. we won't be repeating or showing the story here. let me tell you, if you've seen it, it was a lie. is this the political landscape we are looking at now? are certain segments of the country going to get more and more detached from reality? >> i think we need to talk about two different issues. first of all, twitter world. you mentioned elon musk has 112 million followers. also, the vast majority of americans are not on twitter. you have people who are super, superb in politics. i'm glad you are not repeating the conspiracy theories because they are not worth it. i think the average american, whether it's a republican or democrat, is not on twitter. going back to what we talked about the first segment, they are concerned about at the kitchen table, what's going on in the schools, with their jobs. -- >> i have a question. i can't help but think, as we are having this conversation, about, they might not be on twitter but there are a number of -- i'm not going to call them conservatives -- they are right wing websites, parading as news. there is fox news who are actively amplifying conspiracy theories all day long. some of the folks you're talking about, that you've been talking to and reporting on, those people watch fox. some of these individuals look at these websites. what about this? >> i don't know how to fix the media landscape. overnight i think it's on us, as journalist and reporters, to report the facts and true stories. hopefully the broader sense, to increase media literacy in this country so people know when they are getting true facts and when they are getting nonsense. it's a much broader problem. as we talked about, a threat to democracy. -- >> you can't fix the media landscape overnight, you are right. i think you make an important point. we just talked about, mayor, that everyone is out on twitter. i cannot bully underscore that point enough that seem i made. but there is a role social media plays in this. okay?
