[applause] >> my father first got into office when i was ten. and since that time, i have kept an informal tally that i have gotten on the campaign trail. and the one thing i get the most is, thinking your dad's gonna win. of course, my familial -- because i never doubted that he was gonna win. it's not because of his irreplaceable, and unrivaled, charming humor. though there is that. it's not because of his good looks, even though that can recommend him as well. it's because he has deep and abiding moral convictions. and he's thwarted the trump administration every step along the way, ensuring that democracy remains safe. >> thank you, son. [applause] >> donald trump, today, took to the rose garden to raise the white flag, and agreeing to reopen the government without funding for the border wall. >> i'm very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown, and reopen the federal government. >> i think he thought that he was going to practice extortion, political extortion, and that we would give in. and we stood strong. >> now, for the first time, donald trump will have an effective opposition that will be able to thwart his agenda. they have the power to investigate, they have the power to subpoena. and most importantly, the end of one party rule in washington. >> congressional oversight of the president of the united states finally begins in earnest today. trump's former personal lawyer, michael cohen, will give public testimony before the house oversight committee. and that will be televised live. >> in his opening statement, which we got last night, he said the president was a racist, a con man, and a cheat. and my reaction was, tell us something we don't know, you know? so, you know, i'm basically looking at him like renegade refugee from an organized crime family. and he's gonna tell us sort of the internal dynamics of the trump operation. >> the big story, in my mind, is that we have a president who has turned the government of the united states of america into a moneymaking operation for himself, for his family, for his business, and for his friends. and so, we want to try to get the best, most fine grain portrait we can of what's taking place within the trump operation. and then, we gotta start ask the question about whether this is the president who is an actual threat to the character of our republic. oh my god, look at those people. >> mr. cohen, if you would please rise, and i will begin to swear you in. raise your right hand. >> my loyalty to mr. trump has cost me everything. my family's happiness, friendships, my law license, my company, my livelihood, my honor, my reputation and soon, my freedom. and i will not sit back, say nothing, and allow him to do the same to the country. indeed, given my experience working for mr. trump, i fear that if he loses the election in 2020, that there will never be a peaceful transition of power. and this is why i agreed to appear before you today. was there obstruction or other crimes arising out of that investigation? >> mueller never concluded either way whether the president obstructed justice. so william barr made a determination himself. >> there is an attempt here to preempt congress's role. we are the lawmaking branch of government. we are the primary and dominant branch of government. we are the ones who will decide whether there were high crimes and misdemeanors committed by this president. barr had done a masterful job of -- the public about it, basically pulling the wool over everybody's eyes about what was really in the report. he took a complicated set of facts which showed lots of wrongdoing and condensed it to no collusion, no obstruction. >> there was no evidence of the trump campaign collusion with the russian government hacking. >> there was no collusion, no obstruction, there was no nothing. >> neither of those things was within there. that was the mantra. you could hear it 500 times a day. it's just a classic propaganda tactic of authoritarian regimes. i feel like i could pull in a all nighter. i did not pull one, i think it's just that feeling like, being back in college. cramming for three hours straight. >> would you think that impeachment is more unattainable now? >> i don't think it's any more or any less than it ever was. you know, my attitude from the beginning, has been the impeachment should not be a fetish for anybody. but it should not be a taboo for anybody either. it's not a panacea for everything that ails us in america. it's not going to get health insurance to people. it's not going to lower prescription drug prices. but it is the peoples last line of self-defense against the president who insist upon acting like a king and trampling the law. the great thing about america, what we love about america, is that it's a constitutional democracy. it's a government of the people, by the people, for the people. if somebody decides to disrupt the basic fabric of our republic and to violate the law, we've got to take that seriously. this is a system of laws. the president is not above the law. the president is bound by the law, just like everybody else. we are all taught in third grade that we have three coeval branches. we are not a coequal branch of government, we are the preeminent branch of government. there's a reason why we are in article one. all legislative power invested in the congress of the united states. the constitutional sovereign power of the people to create the country, to write the constitution flowed into congress. what's the core job of the president? to take care of that the laws are faithfully executed. that's it. if the president doesn't take care that the laws are faithfully executed, get rid of him. i overslept. can i use your phone to call julie? so, we'll see. >> the senate is now ready to vote on the article of impeachment. >> mr. mcconnell knew? mr. mcconnell, not guilty. >> it's over. twice tried, twice acquitted. >> the majority of senators, including seven republicans, voted to convict former president trump. but it was not enough. >> the senate has tried donald j trump, former president of the united states, on one article of impeachment. >> i've had every possible emotion about it. i think i was crestfallen the moment i first heard it. >> i want to ask the house managers to be escorted out of the senate chamber. >> one at 100 to 0 verdict. i really thought that we created such an overwhelming cascade of facts, that the wiser republicans might say, this is our chance to save our party. this is our chance to get out from under the thumb of donald trump. and seven of them did the right thing. we needed ten more. and so, we might see a replay in 2024, of the 2020 election. i think we convicted him in the court of public opinion, and i think we convicted him in the eyes of history. so, he's been turned into a pariah, i think, in national politics. and yet, trump has tightened its control over the republican party. right now, you've got majorities of republicans in both houses, who are saying, essentially, they're willing to go along with whatever donald trump says. that wouldn't be a problem for us, if we just had the majority rule in america. but in the gop, they're manipulating every anti-democratic lever of power there is, in order to intrench minority rule against the majority. and that's the struggle in the country today. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> we have our work cut out for us. we have to organize the majority to be politically engaged and active, and to register to vote, and to vote, and not to allow republicans to steal elections. the future of democracy has not been written yet, and it's up to us. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> i want to thank all of you for coming and sharing our grief, and sharing our joy about the life of tommy bloom raskin. hi, feeds. hi, grammy. good to see you, guys. >> how are you?
