For for the latest in the investigation this is delaware prison standoff this morning officials held a News Conference announcing the standoff ended more than 15 hours after. One guard held hostage inside, was found dead. We also have to investigate what happened here, determine the facts, to make sure that it never happens again. Sergeant steven floyd was a 16 year veteran of the department. Flags this delaware are flying at half staff in his honor. Our Team Coverage begins with Eyewitness News reporter joe holden who joins us live from the prison in smyrna with the time line of the events, as they unfolded, joe, good evening. Reporter ukee, good evening to you. Officials tell us from the start they were in communication to folks on the the other side of those prison bars. The fbi and state police were using a corrections officer radio, trying to negotiate with inmates to release those hostages. And when communications seized , those out here, feared the worst. 10 32 wednesday morning and trouble is reported, behind the walls of the James T Vaughn correctional center. Very little is known except inmates have taken control of building number c, a transitional unit of the jail. They have four hostages, three men and a woman. At 2 25 the first hostage emerges, the corrections employee is taken to the hospital, and he is treated and released. By this point radio contact had been established, with the inmates, in control of the building c. Negotiations are underway, for the safe release of hostages. Good evening, thank you for being here. Reporter at this time corrections officials speak for the first time to the press, they take no questions. Into the night on wednesday , a second hostage comes out, he is also taken to the hospital, and will be okay in the meantime, a transmission from the yale to a delaware newspaper, suggested natalie overtaking of the part of the jail was due to complaints about how inmates, were being treated. At 8 00 p. M. , about two dozen inmates emerged, all are considered to be suspects, in the hostage situation. The jail considered a crime scene tonight, and they are also evaluating criminally what role each of those 120 inmates played in this, of course, a criminal prosecution , will soon be underway. Cleve, some Union Workers at the a prison say they had complained about violence among the inmates before, yesterdays standoff, good evening. Reporter good evening, this afternoon, fellow Correctional Officers, gathered together to grief, Sergeant Floyd and also make it known that they think that poor staffing is to blame for his death. Delaware Correctional Officers will remember their brother in uniform sergeant steveer floyd as a hero, just before his death preventing others from walking in the the prison riot trap. They put into a closet. Officers had come in, lieutenants had come into the building to enter into the building and Sergeant Floyd yelled to them and told them it was a trap to get out of the building. Reporter Officers Union believe floyds death was preventable, a Staffing Shortage and new requirements to allow inmates more time out of their cells left floyd and other prison staff vulnerable. The in the months before the riot union was sharing stories of more and more assaults against officers, for example, over a week ago when an officer opened the cell, inmate reached for his ankle and pulled out a homemade metal weapon that was shaped like a knife. Officers say inmates have been faking emergency to test staff readiness for a riot. There have been recent try runs at facilities where inmates are testing and prod go to see what weak points are and we still have concerns among the facilities. Reporter he said not only are facilities under staff poor pay has made it hard to keep office are experienced at controlling the prison population. During a small protest outside the prison, former vaughn inmate james green echoed the same concern about inexperienced officers. It was building up.
