"eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo is live at the state police barracks in port norris where the trooper was stationed, jan, good morning. >> good morning, new jersey state police tell us the driver of toyota corolla for some reason crossed a center grassy median, and drove head-on into this trooper's cruiser. at this point, they're wondering why. that's what they're trying to determine this morning, meantime, authorities have identified the trooper as 31 year old franky williams. this is where he is stationed. south jersey, port norris station. williams was member of the 156 police class, and had just graduated in january of this year. now, take a look at this video. this was the scene early this morning, a solemn salute from state police, trooper williams' body left cooper university hospital in camden. williams was flown there last night for treatment, but could not survive his injuries. now the 31 year old was involved in a violent head-on collision, the crash, not only killed the young trooper, but the driver of the other car, as well. you can see the mangled wreckage, in the middle of state route 55 in millville cumberland county last night. now the crash happened right around 7:00. again the man driving the toyota corolla crossed the grass median, entered the northbound lanes, that's what the corolla and marked state police car collided. williams was responding to a call at the time, again, he died at the hospital. the other driver died at the scene. that man's name has not yet been released. and again, police are conducting full investigation this morning, as for williams, he was in atlantic county native, again, had only been on the force here for less than a year. we will continue to update you on this story but for now we are live in rahel, jim, yes, very dramatic rescued that happened here, what we were told was that an officer actually had to catch a baby that had to be dropped from a third story window here in this 3-story apartment complex. and that baby was not the only person to be rescued here. we are hearing that 12 people in all had to be rescued here. when firefighters pulled up on scene see the ladder truck there, people just with their hands out, trying to be rescued, and firefighters had to go ahead and get them freed. what we're told is that 20 people in total are displaced here. nine people injured. five adult. four children. just huge amount of activity here. but, take a look, this fire broke out just around 4:30 this morning. firefighters had it under control in about 20 minutes. but you can see, they still had their work cut out for them. they tried to investigate where this fire started, this is not only an apartment complex, it is also a pizza shop. so, right now, they are not sure exactly where that fire started. with so many injuries, so many people displaced, and take a listen to deputy fire commissioner. >> companies immediately started aggressive teen year fire fighting operations to protect the people trapped inside the building, and also, started making rescues with both grounds ladders and ladders you can see behind me. almost 12 people were rescued from this >> reporter: joe, all right, thanks for joining us, doctor rob. >> great to be here. >> always a pleasure to see you. first off why do we catch colds? a lot of people think your immune system is weak is that correct flew. >> in if our immune system is more weak, sure, more prone to be getting colds. but there are causes for over virus toss mutate. so if we happen to be near someone who has a cold, or touch an object that might have a cold virus, and then you know it can get into us, someone coughing and sneezing it can happen. >> how do we prevent a cold? >> east years things, wash our hands. you know the cold virus can live on surfaces for several hours. so any high touch objects like doorknobs, keyboards, phones, you know, you're touching that, then if you touch your eyes, your nose, your mouth, that can get into your system. also keep our immune system strong. enough rest, reading healthy, fruits and vegtables actually is vitamins and minerals that can help our immune system, add antioxidant to help keep us healthier. >> mama always said eat your vegtables. >> exactly. >> doctor rob, i always try to cough into my elbow just to be polite when around other people if you're sick, does that actually work though from spreading germs? >> you're very polite. so nice protecting the rest of us. what happens when we cough or sneeze, that moisture comes out about 200 miles per hour, can go up to 6 feet away. so by covering into your sleeve you're keeping that from disseminating into the room. so you are protecting other people because if you don't, that virus can go on a surface and again people can touch it then bring it into their system. >> good to know it actually works watch about proper hands washing? we always hear wash your hands, wash your hands, how often is someone sick around us, should we have to wash our hands? >> first doctor mom is right. wash your hands. they did studies. wash our hands, guess what, motion every douse not wash inbetween our fingers. that's where a lot of the viruses are, so we touch there, so basically periodically throughout the day every hour or two, if you have a hands sanitizer use that, because that works really well to kill the cold virus and keep you from transmit to go other people because we touch surfaces all the time. >> do you believe in the happy birthday series, wash your hands as long as you sing happy birthday? >> dow, 20 to 30 seconds, so sing happy birthday to yourself twice. people might be is a ever say what are you doing? i'm practicing good hand hygiene. that's what you do. but it actually works, a lot of times you look at people, like this doctor rob says wash it for 30 seconds. so we have some props here. what do we have here and why? >> i'm believer in certain things winter is dry. when our mucus membranes get dry, more prone to the viruses, viruses like dry environment. so humidify our work and home environment. the humidifiers work very well, great as a mist, the other thing i'm affirm believer in nutrition. so chicken soup, hey, does chicken soup work?
