This happened, in the the preserve in west milford in passaic county. Tony from our sister station wcbs tells us what happened. They are skiddish they will runaway. Reporter robert is shocked to hear what happened behind his home in the preserve in northern passaic county. West Milford Police say five adults went for a hike on the last sunday of summer but only four made it out alive. 22year old dorris path pathel was mauled to death the by a black bear. From what im told there has been very few bear attacks, and i dont think there has ever been a fatality. Reporter surviving hikers told investigators they encounter the bear and it began to follow them. They grew frightened and ran. The hiker may have twisted his angle and fallen and became separated from the others. When survivors got to safety they called police. The west milford search and rescue found patel dead a black bear nearby the bear was euthanized. The bear had been brought to the state laboratory for a full necropsy to make sure this was the animal involve in the attack and determine potential causes of the attack. Residents in passaic say encounters with black bear are a constant in spring, summer and fall and only thing a bear usually attacks is an unsecured garbage can. What i want to draw your attention to is a front stalling through the carolinas. This is moving off shore and will develop into a coastal low. It is a home grown system that will develop off coast of carolinas and head our direction as we get in the day on thursday. Reporter pat is one of the first to test the technology. It showed he had Heart Failure which had already been confirmed with traditional testing. It is not easy. Reporter breath test could be easier and less expensive. Anything in the blood that is potentially volatile, and body temperature we can detect it in the breath. Limittation in the past is we didnt have technology. Reporter this doctor says that doctors detect severe Heart Failure using breath in one study with 100 percent accuracy. In another they used breath to detect lung cancer and help doctors machine for how patient was responding to treatment. The future of medical testing in general. We are just scratching the surface on the utility of breath testing and medical diagnosis. Reporter more research is still needed before these test can replace body scans and biopsy but doctor norman of the American Lung Association Says he is optimistic about the potential of this technology. We could screen many, many more people for lung cancer, and probably save many, many more lives. Reporter pat, who ended up with the pacemaker, is impressed with how easy the breath test is. Now researchers say if the testing pans out the breath test could be an easy way to sniff out other diseases, including diabetes, but for now, doctors say you have to rely on more traditional test tipping. Officers think this started as a fight the broad street subway line, Eyewitness News, walt hunter joins us now from olney, walt what is the latest. Reporter were live outside einstein Medical Center. Police Crime Lab Technicians behind me piecing together the scene of the double shooting, looking for evident. A double shooting that has left a 15 yearold student, a female dead, and a 19 yearold critically wounded being treated at einstein behind me. All this beginning at 4 15 this afternoon, a fight at the broad and olney subway station suddenly turning violent, bullets fired through the air here. Just outside the einstein Medical Center, shots rang out around 4 15 this afternoon, Police Say Two groups of students had been fight ago board a broad street subway train at the olney station walk down the street and then there was violence. Thirtyfifth district received a radio call from a large crowd, juveniles and young adults, walking south, from broad and olney towards einstein hospital. We dont know why the shooting took place just right outside of einstein hospital. Reporter police say a 15 yearold student was shot to death, a little further down the the street directly outside of the main entrance to the einstein Medical Center, a 19 yearold was shot and critically wounded, and is now, fighting for his life. We dont have a in motive but we know there was a large crowd, just before the shooting came out. Reporter and moments ago Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey told me there are quite simply too many guns on the streets of philadelphia and too many easily available, in this case, two teenagers, perhaps even students who are simply fighting at a subway station one moment and next moment involved in bullets flying.
