"eyewitness news" reporter elizabeth hur is live at philadelphia police headquarte headquarters. liz? >> reporter: chris, police tell us in recent weeks there's been a rash of bank will be brees in the northeast philadelphia area and in each case police have the suspect description and same mo and tonight police believe they finally have their man. bang robbery suspect under arrest tracking him down according to police took only about 20 minutes. >> for some reason he felt the need to after robbing the bank get on septa bus as his get away vehicle. >> reporter: a septa bus known to make frequent stops but that's not all. >> bank employees gave up the money but also put a tracking device in the money. >> reporter: that's right. with a tracking device on him, police say the suspect was on the run. it was around 4:45 tuesday afternoon. police say the suspect rob the wells fargo at welsh and the boulevard. then hopped on a septa bus. police say officers from the eighth district responded right away, and managed to locate the tracking device about a mile away at cottman and the boulevard. >> when police entered the septa bus, they found the suspect. someone who matched the description of the bank robber. when they stopped this individual, on the bus, they not only found the money stolen from the bank. they also found the tracking device. >> reporter: police say the bank teller was then brought to the scene of the bus stop and the teller positively identified the suspect. and police say in this latest case, the suspect used a demand note threatening he was armed with a gun. thankfully police say he was not armed and thankfully the 15 passengers on the bus were not hurt. every once again, at this time, police are looking into the possibility that this same man would be responsible for as many as four bank robberies. that is the very late latest from here live from police headquarters i'm elizabeth hur, cbs-3 it were the news. >> breaking news tonight a teenager shot in the grays ferry second of the city tonight. chopper three over that scene at 29th and morris. we're told it's a 15 year old victim shot in the hand. he's now being treated at a local hospital. there's no word where that shot came from or who pulled the trigger. a philadelphia police officer is arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. officer tamika gross turned herself in today. she's accused of encouraging her teenaged children to fight other teenagers in their neighbor. the 35 year old is a seven year veteran of the force. gross has been suspended with the intent dismiss. >> tonight detectives are checking to see if the written house square rape suspect's dna is linked to any unsolved rape cases. authorities say the suspect attacked a woman near 19th and spruce on saturday. last night detectives picked up the suspect at his workplace a restaurant at broad and catherine. surveillance video shows the man police say is melton garcia grabbing that 26 year old victim and forcing her into a building. that's where police say garcia raped her and then stole her keys and cell phone. detectives found that cell phone and garcia south philadelphia home at eighth and moore. >> the victim's phone gave us an indication to that neighborhood but not to that specific location. as a result the investigators then began their pretty extraordinary work and narrowed down the scope and actually targeted a residence at had location. >> reporter: federal authorities say garcia is an illegal immigrant who been kicked out of the u.s. a year ago. >> as we head tore the midweek, things are about to get unsettled outside. we're tracking storms that are going to hit tomorrow. let's check in with meteorologist kathy orr much she's got more on the when and where now. kathy? >> jameer was arising junior and honor student at mastery charter school. the united methodist church reinstates a pastor from lebanon county who was defrock after officiating his son's same sex wedding. frank schaeffer is returning to the pulpit. he celebrated the ruling at the first united methodist church in germantown today. slave led zion methodist church of iona. he was defrocked following a church trial last year after vowing to perform other same sex weddings if asked. >> i will never be silented again. i will always speak with and for my lgbtq brothers and sisters in the church and beyond. >> the church appeals panel ruled that punishment was wrong because it was based on an assumption schaeffer would break church law in the future. >> secretary of state john kerry is in iraq pressing for political reform to head off a fierce insurgency there. kerry met with the president of the iraqi kurds today. tried to rally support for the political process in baghdad. the obama administration wants iraq shiite led government to share power with its sunni and curdish arrivals. iraq' prime minister wants the us to carry out air strikes on militant fighters but that seems unlikely. >> it would be a complete and total act of irresponsibility for the president just to order a few strikes but there's no government there's no back up, no military, there's nothing there that provides the capacity for success. >> hundreds of volunteers are signing up we are iraq's military joining the fight against sunny extremists who have captured key parts of that country. congressional leaders mark the 50th anniversary of the civil rights act of 1964. ♪ that was the scene on capitol hill today. lawmakers joining hands singing we shall overcome. during that ceremony the congressional gold medal was posthumouposthumous awarded to h tip king, jr., and coretta scott king. >> some people from our area are heading to mississippi to mark the 50th anniversary of the freedom summer. they'll be attending a conference there that focuses on the fight for racial justice. the 1964 freedom summer was movement to open the polls to african-americans in the state of mississippi. these students are part of youth united for change, a group that organizes students to improve they are communities. >> parents and students protested a plan to lay off more than 200 teachers in the camden school district tonight. they fear those layoffs will have a negative many packet on students, they're hoping the district row considers. tonight's protest came during the board of education meeting at pine point middle school. that district is facing a $75 million budget shortfall. new developments in bucks county surrounding a name controversy at neshaminy high school. students, parents and administrators aired their concerns tonight over the redskins name at a meeting in langhorne. "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones has more. >> reporter: the editorial board here of the student newspaper wants to ban the use of the word redskin in the paper, and tonight they scored a partial victory. when reporting on the football team, using the word redskin is not loud in the student newspaper. labeling it an offensiv offensil slur the editorial staff measure machine student paper voted to ban the word end tourly from the paper. >> i don't think it matter what is the origin of the word is. >> the school board wasn't so thrilled. engaged in a month long fight over the use of the school mascot in the paper. the board argued banning the word redskins wasn't allowed. that it wasn't fair to students who have different opinion. >> the supreme court has issued a decision which makes it very clear that the curriculum context school districts have the ability to exercise greater control over the content of student's speech. >> reporter: the latest version of the district's new p.m. see that was recommended tuesday night says the editorial staff can keep the name of the school mascot out of news stories but it can't edit out the word redskins from the editorial page where other students can cite their own opinion in the letters to the editor section. >> they still have kept the part saying it should not be construed as a racially ethnic school when referring to the school mascot which is fairly ridiculous. >> there was a restrict on the right of pre speech of other students who had differ pin. >> reporter: the new revised policy that was agreed indianapolis today. at least three homes were heavily damaged in hendricks county. the national weather service preliminarily confirmed that tornado was an f1 with speeds up to 110 miles per hour. first responders went door to door to check on residents. but no injuries were reported. >> meantime much of waterville, minnesota is underwater thanks to severe flooding. heavy rain this month has cough the crow river and several lake to overflow their banks. in fact water levels are a proving their highest in 50 years. and they're expected to remain that way until the middle of next week. well, federal investigators now say that pilot error caused the crash of asian anna airlines flight 214 in which three people died and more than 200 injured. the boeing 777 slammed into a sea wall last year at san francisco international airport and then burst into flames. an investigation by the ntsb has now found the plane was flying too low and traveling too slow. three veteran pilots were in the cockpit. but investigators say that they failed to maintain the planes toes air speed and they waited too long before trying to abort the landing. >> on the health watch tonight, a significant break through in the battle against breast canc cancer. doctors say 3d digital mammography is a better way to find early stage tumors. a new study was released late today and part of that research was done right here in philadelphia. stephanie stahl is on the story. >> this is my daughter. she's 15. >> reporter: 54 year old lori schaeffer is raising two teenagers in south jersey where for years she was worried about a series of inclusive breast screenings. then lori turned to penn medicine where 3d mammography known as tomorrow mow synthesis found what she had been fearing. >> even though it was diagnosed as cancer it was stage one, and they got it in time, and i just feel very happy you know that i know i had it and it's cure. report roar here's a traditional image of lori's breast and that is the more detailed 3d view. >> when you look at the tomorrow mow zen they sis area this area clearly stands out. >> provides 3d images -- >> you get clearer look at the breast tissue by being able to look at individual slices as opposed to the entire breast as a single project. >> reporter: been was part of a sweeping new study that included half million women with 3d digital mammography there was a 41% increase in the detection of invasive cancer compared to traditional mammography alone. there was also a 15% decrease in unnecessary follow up tests because of false alarms. >> it really helped oh and both ends of the screening process. >> reporter: lori owes is the uncertainty of not knowing was worse than the diagnosis that finally came with the 3d technology. >> i believe it saved my life. >> reporter: many doctors feel that 3d mammograms should be used more routinely but they're not currently covered by most insurance plans. we have a lot more information for you at has arrived. >> no but also because her big brother has arrived. he is home after being away in japan serving the navy for three years. school project on roll models had all of the students assembled today on the last day of school. when riley gardner's big brother tommy schaeffer showed up and gave her the surprise of her young life. >> when he popped out it was like, wow, i can't believe he's here. >> it's pretty rough, you know. being away from family, especially younger sibling. >> we're going to go out, hang out together, just me and her. it will be real good. >> three years they've definitely be feeling the difference. outside right now, it is pretty comfortable. wherever you are. the lights going down on the boards tonight. look at this. ocean city cape may county, busy earlier this evening, but closed for business right now but wait until the weekend. storm scan3 looking at dry conditions. no weather issues right now. but tomorrow will be heat, it will be humidity and some storms a line of storms already extending. you can see from buffalo, new york, through pittsburgh and down through ohio with severe weather out through indiana. we are looking at some showers and thunderstorm especially tomorrow afternoon. right now pretty comfortable. philadelphia 74. 75 in allentown. 74 in reading. good sleeping weather but that will change come tomorrow. this line of showers and storms will move across the region. with a frontal boundary in its wake some drying conditions by thursday afternoon. here's a look at what we expect for your wednesday. storms mainly during the afternoon. moving northwest to southeast. some downpours especially to the north and west of philadelphia and as you head toward the lehigh valley we could see some very localized flash flooding where we see these storms train or go over the same region over and over again. which is possible. so the setup, moves that front through the region very slowly wednesday. that's why it will be over a prolonged period of time. some scattered showers and storms. temperatures in the 80s pretty uncomfortable out there. and then even by thursday morning, it continues to linger with some morning rain giving way to clearing. temperatures in the 80s much it's not until friday that this area of high pressure moves down from canada. gets much more comfortable with a drier air mass low humidity and temperatures once again in the 80s. if we take closer look quiet for tonight, even tomorrow morning. it's by around the noon hour, a few showers could pop up. but heavily during the afternoon and then you can see this line developing during the dinner hour moving through and it gets a little spotty by late tomorrow night. overnight increasing clouds, warm, and increasingly humid low temperature 71. tomorrow the kind of day you stand outside you don't have too much much work and be perspiring a bit. partly sunny skies expected showers and storms in the afternoon the high temperature 86. on the exclusive "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast and shore cast, 88 thursday. drier more comfortable friday and saturday. and then by sunday, it turns warm and humid. with a few scattered showers and storms and that continues through the beginning of next week. those shore temperatures getting pretty hot as well. be sure to wake up with "eyewitness news" in the morning. meteorologist katie fehlinger will track the weather and any changes the team starts at 4:30 here on cbs-3 and then continues on the cw beginning at 7:00. so the greatest potential for that really
