worry because i have my grandchild. >> reporter: she's not allowed. seven cars on her streets were broken into. >> it's really hard because even though i have insurance i still have to pay the deductible. >> reporter: surveillance video shows the crime happened at 4:20 in the morning. the car parks, two people run out. the driver remains on the lock -- lookout. the suspect jumps back into the car. the group also hits neighboring streets. in all 30 car break-ins in 30 minutes. >> it's real quick. in and out a little after 4:00, in between 4:00 a.m. and 4:28 they committed all theseburglaries. >> reporter: neighbors reported a suspicious white car in the area. police ran the plates. turned out it's tied to a stolen white lexus in brentwood where police were investigating 17 similar smash and grabs in the hampton inn parking lots. >> it's impressive that many of us were broken into. i was surprised. >> reporter: what's odd, it appears the suspects damaged a lot of cars, but not much was taken. police say the group appears to be from out of town and they have no idea -- appears to be from out of town and they have no idea why they targeted this neighborhood. >> i hope lightning doesn't strike twice, right? they've already hit us. hopefully they won't be back again. maybe they've moved on to other areas. >> reporter: and police don't have descriptions of the suspects, but here is the license plate of the stolen car. it's on your screen. it is 4jpx560. police are asking for the public's help and they are also saying it's a reminder for everyone to be on alert and do not leave valuables in your car overnight. back to you. >> yeah, frustration for a lot of people with those cars tonight, all right azenith smith, thank you. a traffic stop ends in a deadly collision for the suspect police were after. an officer from the gilroy police department attempted to stop a stolen vehicle yesterday around 2:30 in the afternoon. the driver sped off and then ended up crashing into a tree at the intersection of ren avenue in san miguel street. the 28-year-old behind the wheel was killed. the santa clara county coroner has identified her as ria leonard. she had outstanding arrest warrants from two nearby counties and was on probation for knowingly buying or receiving a stolen vehicle. oakland homicide detectives are still searching for clues in the mysterious beating death last week. tonight the grieving family hopes a reward will encourage people to name the killer. leigh martinez has more. >> reporter: just after midnight last sunday a person driving near the 200 block of grand avenue in oakland saw a man being viciously beaten by another man. the driver honked and the attacker ran away. the victim 45-year-old anthony owens was beaten unconscious. he would not survive diagnose the next day at highland hospital. >> i hope they can catch the guy. >> reporter: mill is owen's father. he hadn't spoken to his son in some time. owens' only child, a daughter who lives in arizona is grief stricken and wants answers. >> we were pretty close. we would talk a lot, but he didn't really reach out. she's hurt. and he is going through her pain also. >> reporter: oakland police are investigating whether owens knew the man who attacked him. he struggled with drugs, but had been in a wellness program for the past year. coburt grew up in oakland and shocked his son was attacked in such an open intersection near lake merritt. i used to run the lake before i sprained my leg and i haven't been able to run the lake. i used to run it three days a week and i know the area really well. >> reporter: he takes comfort knowing his son signed up to be an organ donor. two people recently received his liver and kidneys. >> i'm proud of him from that aspect of it. >> reporter: there is a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrests of won's kill -- of owen's killer. in the newsroom leigh martinez ktvu fox 2 news. one man is under arrest tonight in connection to a deadly stabbing in hayward. it happened just before 9:30 last night on happyland avenue. it's not clear what led up to the stabbing, but police say a suspect was taken into custody a short time later. the names of the suspect and the victim had not been released. firefighters are currently battling a 150-acre fire near gilroy. it was first reported near 4:00 this afternoon near the intersection of castro valley road and highway 101. it tripled in size in less than two hours. one structure is currently threatened, but the fire is now 50% contained. more progress on the wildfire burning near the yosemite national park. the fire is no longer expanding as quickly. firefighters now have it 45% contained. it's grown by just one square mile since yesterday. in the weeks since it started it has burned more than 76,000 acres. fire crews say they believe or they are relieved rather the wind is not blowing as hard as it had been, but they are still concerned those high winds could return. >> it's mother nature. we're expecting some thunderstorms over the sierras today and there's going to be some outflows on in, you know, which is far away. but that could affect us with the high wind speeds. potentially today that could reach us and you could see this today in a way that we could see some pretty significant runs. >> some of the evacuations have been lifted, but the fire is still threatening 1,500 buildings including some homes. it burned more than 120 structures including at least 63 houses. now most of the people who own the homes that were destroyed are being allowed back in today to see the ruins to help them cope with their losses. >> all right, weather always a big factor in these fires with the wind and the humidity and the temperatures. mark, how is it looking out there? >> well temperatures have been cooling off a little bit, but still pretty hot during the afternoon guys. but this is also the consequence of the drought we were dealing with just last year and setting up the whole event over the past few years for this portion of the state. right now temperatures, they have settled down into the upper 70s, but this fire as you know is just huge for this portion of california that was threatening mariposa. in fact i was driving towards yosemite monday afternoon. i saw this fire from the distance in oak dale. that was just 7,000 acres. hard to believe it grew that much. right now the fire zone in the upper 70s. relative humidity, those moisture levels will creep up right around 36% with a closer look at the fire zones and of course the terrain is always going be a challenge for the fire crews out there. for tomorrow 7:00 a.m. mid-70s. 75 degrees and then on track to reach the 90s. it'll be cooler than today. 96 degrees. relative humidity around 24%. the winds do pick up a bit out of the southwest around 15 miles an hour. the whole area shaded in gray, that is a smoke advisory. that's in place over the course of the fires. and right on through thursday morning, but hopefully crews will continue to get a better handle. that trend will continue at least as they are battling the wildfires with improving conditions. cooler temperatures in their forecast over the next couple of days. we'll talk more about our changing pattern as well in a few minutes. new information tonight in texas where nine people are dead including two children and more than two dozen are hospitalized after they were left in the back of the tractor trailer in the parking lot of a wal-mart in san antonio, texas. 17 of those in the hospital are in life threatening conditions. police say the victims were mexican and a part of the human trafficking ring. will carr has more now on the investigation. >> you're looking at the trafficking crime. >> reporter: a horrific discovery in texas as authorities find dozens of mexicans inside a sweltering hot tractor trailer parked outside a wal-mart in san antonio. they were likely migrant workers being smuggled into the country. >> we got a call from a wal- mart employee that there was a tractor trailer that was parked in the lot here. he was approached by someone from that truck who was asking for water. >> reporter: the truck was packed with 38 people mostly men although there were also two 15-year-olds. many of the survivors were vomiting and rushed to the hospital for heatstroke and dehydration. they soared past 100 degrees during the day and remained in the 90s at night. >> our paramedics and firefighters found each one had heart rates over 130 beats per minute, which again they were very hot to the touch, so these people were in their trailer without any signs of water. >> reporter: the acting director of vice releasing a statement saying, "by any standard the horrific crime uncovered last night ranks as a stark reminder why human smuggling networks must be pursued, caught, and punished." the driver of the truck is facing state and federal charges. in las vegas will carr fox -- in los angeles will carr fox news. he was introduced as a part of the trump's white house just days ago. but the new communications director is taking a stand. why he's threatening to fire people. i have never seen this much in the field in a very good way. and that is really nice. >> it's been six months since san francisco's swore in their new police chief. tonight we go one on one with him. what he says is one of the toughest tasks ahead of him. new white house communications director anthony scaramucci won't tolerate leaks in his department. he told cbs those on his staff must stop leaking if they want to keep their jobs. and if they don't he'll have to fire everybody. >> we are strong as our weakest link and i'll say it differently in a pun where our strong is our weakest leaks. why don't you all get together and make a decision as a team that you're going to stop leaking. but you're going to keep leaking then i'm going to fire everybody. it is very buy nair. >> he's a hedge fund magnet as well as a long-time republican donor and fundraiser. republican leaders in congress, they are set to return to the capitol tomorrow to try to salvage their health care bill. >> it's not clear what, if anything they will be able to pass. ellison barber has the latest now from washington. >> reporter: senate majority leader mitch mcconnell pushed back the august recess until the 3rd week of august and the delay is largely because of health care. republicans failed to pass any sort of repeal and replace legislation. on saturday president trump tweeted, "the republican senators must step up to the plate. after seven years vote to repeal and replace." next tax reform and infrastructure, win. health care is top of their to do list. senators are expected to vote on a proposal this week, but we don't know if the legislation is going to be something that repeals and replaces obamacare or just repeals it. >> a leader will make that decision at some point about whether that is repeal and replace. i hope it's repeal and replace. >> reporter: senator rand paul is still not a fan of the senate bill. >> i think just pass it, pass it, pass it is not a great strategy. particularly when you wind up with something that looks like poor people got less health care and rich people got more of your money. >> reporter: the white house wants something done. from vice president pence to president trump they are making sure congress knows it. >> president trump said it plainly when he had the senators over to his white house. he had pen in hand, the senate health care bill we believe is the right bill at the right time and to begin to repeal and replace obamacare. >> you can call on those senators to make sure you get health care. >> reporter: the last time the senate majority leader delayed the august recess this long it was 1994. then majority leader george mitchell delayed recess by more than three weeks to work on health care reform and a crime bill. that attempt failed. in washington i'm ellison barber fox news. thousands of americans are asking lawmakers to reject the gop's health care plan. with 7,000 to find a letter asking them to redact the plan calling it immoral and contrary to the teachings of the catholic faith. the opposition is being led by sister simone campbell who advocated to the past for the affordable care act back in 2010. they criticize the sisters in the past for their activism. police are investigating a shooting in san francisco sunny dale neighborhood that sent two people to the hospital last night. officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 100 block of glides dale. two people were taken to the hospital. no other information is available at this time and no word on whether police have any suspects. police are searching for seven people suspected of gang raping a woman in east oakland friday night. the attack was reported at 10:00 p.m. on 83rd avenue near new highland academy elementary school. police say the victim was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment and all seven suspects remain at large. in marin county authorities have recovered the body of the missing boater from tomales bay. friends and family say the body is of the 70-year-old. a group of boaters are still looking for fred found his body around 2:00 p.m. yesterday. he was last seen on tuesday, but the official search was called off on wednesday. investigators believe he was not wearing a life vest and fell off his boat. well today we started to cool things off, but still on the hot side. upper 90s close to 100 degrees with a look at some of the highs for your afternoon. oakland 79. santa rosa mid-90s and san francisco cooling off into the 60s. yesterday san francisco in the 70s. it looks like summer out there, doesn't it? the fog hugging the coastline right now and a pretty good onshore breeze to help transport that fog that's already happening pushing back into the bay out towards the golden gate bridge. san francisco approaching oakland as well. in fact here is our live camera showing you that fog looking towards the estuary. you can see a little chop on the water there. san francisco out in the distance with that fog bank working its way back into the area. first thing tomorrow morning overnight lows in the 50s to right around 60 degrees to start out your monday morning. areas of fog near the coast. and near the bay we'll call it partly cloudy well inland out towards livermore and antioch. in san francisco our sky cast showing you this. all the cloud cover tomorrow morning in the upper 50s. still some stubborn clouds into the afternoon hours by 12:00 it's 62. tomorrow will be in the mid- 60s. those winds will pick up for your afternoon hours topping 20 miles an hour. so here is the expected fog pattern tomorrow morning near the coast over san francisco. oakland and hayward, san rafael as well. then the clouds will clear back near the coastline. no big changes here, but tomorrow will be cooler than today. so we're talking about not much in the way of triple digits. in fact you can see the warmest locations right around 90 with a lot of upper 80s. in san francisco there's the 65 for your monday afternoon. a bit of a cooler trend, but  then another warming trend in our five-day forecast. we'll have more on that in a few minutes. there are challenges ahead and reforms he plans on implementing. we'll go one on within with san francisco's new police chief. six months in he's encouraged on where the department is going. he tells us about some of their toughest tasks ahead. runners taking part in this year's san francisco remote. xfinity. the future of awesome. thousands of runners took to the streets of san francisco to participate in the 40th san francisco marathon. 39-year-old jorge marvia came in first place finishing the marathon just under two and a half hours. the event raised over $300,000 for charity. ktvu's allie rasmus is there. >> some runners felt safer since officials decided to close some of the lanes on the golden gate bridge. >> reporter: well from 6:00 a.m. until 9:00 this morning the northbound lanes of the golden gate bridge had been shut down to traffic. but now you can see things are back to normal with traffic moving on the bridge again promptly at 9:00. crews came by and picked up the final traffic cones as the final runners and marathons were moved on to the sidewalk. now you can see traffic back open again. at 7:30 this morning that's when you could really see most people running on the golden gate bridge. an estimated 15,000 people were running on the race course, the marathon race course going over the golden gate bridge and back. we spoke to a lot of the runners this morning. they felt a lot more comfortable knowing they had the road to themselves. golden gate bridge district decided to earlier this year make the call to shut down the lanes while all the runners were going to be taking part in that event as a security and safety precaution. >> very windy, very cold, very wet, but really exhilarating. especially with the fog going on. it was awesome. >> reporter: and no cars. >> it was excellent. >> reporter: how did that help? >> you don't have to be afraid you're going to get hit. >> reporter: 20,000 people overall took part in the san francisco's marathon. the bulk of the runners again for the marathon raced in the race as well. but at 7:30 this morning that's when we saw the most people running back and forth in the northbound direction. now the golden gate bridge district says they're going to have to make a policy decision in the future about whether or not the san francisco marathon in other events can even have their race course on the golden gate bridge because of some of those security concerns. but golden gate bridge spokesperson says that's the decision they'll have to make in the coming months. in san francisco allie rasmus ktvu fox 2 news. it's been six months since san francisco swore in their new police chief. he's settled now after the move from l.a. to the bay area. this week we went one on one with chief bill scott. he tells us about the hardest task ahead of him. >> we will deescalate. we brought police department. this week ktvu's frank mallicoat sat down with the new chief for a one-on-one interview. the chief talks about the reforms he's looking to carry out. >> i have never seen the city become a small town feel in a very good way. and that's really nice. >> the chief of police of the city and county of san francisco. congratulations. [ applause ] >> reporter: it's been six months since the san francisco police department swore in their new police chief. so after 179 days on the job, i sat down with the chief bill scott to learn how he is settling into the position and the city he now calls home. >> i'm settling as i can. i'm working all the time. so a lot of the times you go home and go to bed and come back to work tomorrow. but i have been able to enjoy the city somewhat. not as much as i would like to, but yeah, we're getting settled. >> reporter: the lead up to chief scott taking the helm was marked with controversy. former san francisco police chief resigned in the end of may last year at the request of mayor ed lee. in october a u.s. department of justice report outlined 272 recommended changes for the department. scott was sworn in two months later in december and feels they have made significant progress when it comes to the report. >> really we set the mark on in terms of where we need to be as a city and a police department in terms of the recommendations. numerically at this point we submitted 80 of those recommendations. as far as the documentations to the city of justice. >> reporter: scott says one of the toughest task is changing the culture within the department, especially when it comes to deescalation tactics. >> we hope we can get to the point of where we will employ the proper tactics to prevent these levels on a daily force. >> reporter: chief scott served for 27 years with the los angeles police department. but a department that will allow their officers to use tasers. the use of tasers has been a big source of controversy between sfpd and the joint unit. >> yes, i'm still in favor of their less lethal tool. given they don't have too many cases of things that have happened and they have gone awry, but it's not designed to take a person's life. >> be smart about it. >> reporter: six months in he tells me he's encouraged by where the department is headed. while crime might be up across the country. >> in our city we wanted to go in the other direction and go down. but that's challenged, tieing into all of the transformers and the reformers that we have to do and that it will be really important. >> reporter: frank mallicoat ktvu fox 2 news. >> turning out to washington. president trump took to twitter today to criticize some of his own party. and in a tweet this afternoon he said, "it is very sad republicans, even some carried over on the line on my back do very little to protect their president. " it's unclear exactly what led him to tweet that, but the president also tweeted, "regarding the russia investigation as the phony russia witch hunt continues two groups are laughing at this excuse for the election taking hold. democrats and russians." meanwhile another chapter will be added to the probe into possible ties of russia and president trump's campaign team. the senate committee says there is no need to subpoena donald trump jr. and paul manafort to testify because the pair has agreed to negotiate to providedocuments and to be interviewed behind closed doors. that interview was scheduled for wednesday. but we were told it will be ongoing investigations, highly unlikely it will happen this week. however his son-in-law and advisor jared kushner is scheduled to testify before the house and senate intelligence committee this week as a part of their investigation into their election medaling and -- meddling. this morning on fox and friends kellyanne conway insisted the russian investigations are a waste of time. >> the president has always said this is the russia's discussion. it's a witch hunt and a hoax. it's a conclusion in search of evidence. honestly what are we doing here? what is this about? the taxpayer money, the diversion of resources and times. he is talking about america. they're talking about russia. >> reporter: congress is set to pass a bill with a new round of sanctions against russia. the bill would also block the president's ability to roll back those sanctions without congress' approve. the white house has been pushing hard to have that part removed saying they would limit their ability to negotiate. but today on fox news sunday, ben garden says he is confident it will pass even if the president vetoes the bill. >> this is a very strong bill and they impose mandatory sanctions on russia. it provides for congressional review and of the president who wants to wait or eliminate sanctions, then it is very bipartisan. it has broad support in the senate and in the house. if he vetoes a bill we'll override his veto. >> reporter: he says they support the sanctions in the bill, but they send mixed messages if they plan to sign it or make it his first veto. in washington i'm garrett tenney fox news. breaking news we're following the death toll from a suicide car bombing in cabo has risen to 24 tonight. 34 more people were wounded all happening in a neighborhood of afghanistan's capital. the bomber apparently rammed into a mini bus, but investigators are not sure if the bus and the people on it were the target. buses carrying government workers have been targeted before. no one has taken immediate responsibility. both the taliban and isis have targeted them in the past. coming up he earned it for the wounds he suffered during world war ii, but the purple heart went missing more than 50 years ago. >> reporter: the story sounds like it's right out of the movie, but i can show you it's real life. coming up next the family is reunited with the medal ten years after someone found it in the dirt. and in weather finally talking about cooler temperatures in your bay area forecast. outside right now the fog is trying to regroup and push back into the bay. tracking another warming trend. we'll show you all those changes coming up in the five- day forecast. the navy will start testing the newly commissioned uss jail ford aircraft carrier. it's considered the most technologically advanced warship ever built and has more space to move aircrafts around. navy officials say when it comes to size the uss gerald ford is about five acres. this week they'll test the launching ship for the very first time. >> it'll be different. we'll catch our first aircraft, which will be interesting and exciting and we'll get to actually put everything we have worked on for two years and put it into practical use. >> well when it get deployed in 2020 the ship will house dozens of sailors. the ship carries $13 billion to build. decades after disappearing an american hero lost medals that had been returned to his family. brian yenas has the details. >> reporter: the story sounds like it's right out of a movie, but it's real life. >> reporter: a party heart is finally reunited with a new york family, but the road to get there was a long one. about a decade ago they found the lost medal in the dirt in upstate new york. engraved on it, b.j. and the date december 9, 1943. >> there is no data base with a list of all purple heart recipients. and to top it off, thousands served in world war ii. and dozens of b.j.s served. >> new york senator chuck schumer's office was tasked with locating their owner. on sunday he presented the purple heart to four generations of staff sergeant's family. he was wounded by nazi artillery fire in 1943 and was a nazi prisoner of war for 472 days. his mother katherine says the last time they saw the purple heart was in 1962. >> she would pin the medals on them and told them to go out and play soldier. i think that is the last time i ever saw the medal. >> reporter: the purple heart is the nation's oldest award given to wounded combat veterans. >> when you come home you put your medals away and you try to forget about that stuff and just go on with your life, which is what he did. >> my dad, he lived a very quiet humbled life. and having these medals giving back to us is great. >> staff sergeant's bronze star medal and the infantry badge were lost. both issued to the family. in new york brian yanez fox news. they're calling a starbucks customer a courageous hero. surveillance video shows it all go down. a man walks into a starbucks shore carrying a replica handgun and demanded money. the robber pulled out a large knife and that's when 58-year- old craig jerry you see there grab the chair. he turned the knife on jerry, but jerry overpowered him and managed to stab him several times. another starbucks worker who you see there didn't seem fazed at all and didn't notice the commotion. kept on cleaning tables. the robber ran away, but was taken to a hospital caught a short time later. craig jerry received minor injuries, but expected to completely recover. >> interesting, right? >> yes, kind of crazy there. a trip to the lake this weekend ended in tragedy. coming up next the vapor fire that caused severe burns on at least be a fun day on the lake ended with five childrenning with rushed -- being rushed to the hospital after being caught in a vapor flash. they were treated for 1st and second-degree burns. when the engine was started fuel vapors in the water were sparked causing the vapor flash. officials say the boat driver failed to use the boat's blower system to ventilate the engine. >> it could explode, so you're suppose to run it before you turn the ignition. you're suppose to return it for five minutes. >> one witness saw a young girl carried away on a stretch, but all five are expected to recover. new security measures at a holy site leading to tensions in jerusalem. connor powell shows us there is no foreseeable end to the violence. >> reporter: after two very violent days on friday and saturday, tensions remained extremely high here. israel announcing sunday they installed new security cameras at the entrance to jerusalem's holiest site. but it's unclear if the israeli government will remove the metaldetectors that sent off violent clashes this weekend. to muslims as the compound. after three arab israelis launched an attack from it last week. two israeli police officers were killed. muslims view the installation of metal detectors as a unilateral step to violate the status quo agreement and an effort by the israeli government to seize control of the religious site. prime minister benjamin roybal denied this and barred the men from the -- from under the age of 50 from entering the mosque. later a pal stanin man snuck into the jewish west bank center and brutally murdered three israelis. on saturday israeli security forces launched a series of raids on palestinian homes. the u.n. security council set to take up the situation on monday. but in the past outside groups have had very little influence in calming the influence here. this time seems no different. connor powell fox news. so a clean trend start today here in the bay area. we have some fog right now regrouping near the coast pushing back into the bay. if you want excesstive heat inland you'll like the forecast for tomorrow. here is the deal tonight. areas of fog out there will be cooler. that means the warmest locations we're thinking about some upper 80s to the lower 90s. it's a short-term deal because temperatures warm up into your extended forecast for thursday, friday, into the upcoming weekend. but at least for tomorrow and areas of fog out there partly cloudy skies inland. then for your afternoon hours coastal overcast. temperatures inland as we mentioned the upper 80s to right around 90 degrees for your monday afternoon. outside right now it's foggy at the golden gate bridge. you can't see too much here in terms of the stubborn fog near the coast all day long and over portions of san francisco. so you will need the sweater and the thick coat for tomorrow morning if you will be right around the bay for your monday morning. here is the satellite perspective on the fog with some high clouds and thunderstorms off to the east and out towards the sierra moving into nevada. here we go at the fog from let's see the bay towards half moon bay to pillar point and up to our north as well as we come in closer with that onshore wind. winds are around 20 to 25 miles an hour a good mechanism to push that fog closer to richmond and berkeley and oakland for your monday. the adopted fair is held every saturday and sunday at their rescue on alabama street. they give people who are looking to adopt an animal a chance to get to know them. they will also have treats and
