Now a landslide in an unfortunate spot underneath a pg and e tower. Where drivers cant help but notice the situation. Reporter yeah, julie. Helicopters, cranes, its all happening here alongside highway 24. Its been a hub of construction activity, ever since the slide on sunday. To actually see it, you have to go up. From sky fox, a landslide, up high and away from homes, but in a tricky spot, nonetheless. Next to a high voltage transmission tower. Its a risk that cant be ignored. Can the transmission tower be saved . I dont think its in danger of not being saved. Reporter helicopters are burying poles to the hilltop, to provide additional backup, should the wires have to come off the tower. So far no effect on power, but people are buzzing about whats happening in the hills above them. Any slide anywhere is not good, particularly if your homes in the way, your streets in the way, or anything is in the way. Reporter this time, a giant tower is in the way. Its connected to highly visible lines that drape across the freeway. You cant help but notice them, they have these weighted things on the wires so that theyre not slapping around, so it becomes a focal point. Reporter now two giant cranes have been positioned on the side of the highway, set up, so that should the overhead wires droop or fall, the crane would be able to catch them. Can you imagine . Oh, yeah, how much fun is that . Reporter residents on nearby bridges within sight of the mudslide are able to watch it it every moment. I could see the hill slide had slid quite a bit, and the transmission tower had a little bit of a lean to it. A very slight lean, very slight lean. Reporter pg and e says those cranes parked on highway 24 are out of an abundance of caution, as they try to shore up the tower, and the transmission lines by the way, seeing substations. Not customers directly, so if they were to become deenergized, power is easily rerouted. Debora, the goal is not to replace this tower, actually, theyre trying to just shore it up . Reporter theyre trying to save it, that would be ideal. If the ground continues to move, and we get more wet weather, they cant count on it staying put. Its already moved a couple of feet since the last rain. They do have to have plan b, to have another structure move those lines to. Then the cranes up here, just in case those lines fall. Definitely a tricky situation, debora, thank you.
