just started. it's not just that they won out on the road which is tough to do in the nfl and you'll take a victory any way you do it, but the raiders, one of the gutsiest calls you'll ever see. they are letting everybody know they are for real and they come for one reason, to win. in new orleans, of course, on 9/11 jack del rio who would wind up smiling but very somber proceedings before it all starts. 1st quarter question got a 3-3 game. derek carr with sensational particularly late. amari cooper makes up for it with a great catch and a 34- yard gain. right after that gave it to latavious murray who bulls his way into the end zone 10-3. you're thinking the raiders are going to make a big statement. however, they trail 17-10 at half. 3rd quarter oh, man, not this again, drew brees, 423 yards passing, 98 to brandon cook who beat shaun smith badly, no help from the safety in kenny norton, oh, not a good look from him. 98 yards, 24-10, but jalen rashard, his first nfl carry, 75 yards. that's the equivalent of hitting a grand slam in your first big league at bat, touchdown with the two-point conversion, 27-27, but brees again, a little flip to travaris cadet, 2-yard touchdown, 34-27. on comes carr not taking no for an answer. 11 plays, 75-yard drive. seth roberts has the raiders back in front 34-33 as the clock winds down. they don't go for the kick. they go for the we're about. >> the message is loud and clear. these aren't the raiders you've seen the past decade or so. meantime the giants this isn't the team we've seen the last couple months. first batter gives you a little clue how this afternoon might proceed in a series sweep over arizona. denard span over and out, solo homer, 10th of the year. 1-0. 6th inning, brandon belt seems to be swinging out of a slump. they take the lead 3-2. 6th inning and matt moore, career high 11 strikeouts for him, the lefty doing his job. he would strike out the side there and giants in position to wrap it up here. it's hunter pence, sensational series. he's scored eight runs in the series knocking the ball around, two-run double to right. pagan scores easy. brandon crawford with the slide. giants sweep the series 5-3. dodgers lost to san francisco again only three games out in the west. it's time to cut your losses literally for the a's as they decide to let billy butler go. he signed that three year deal for $30 million. it just wasn't working out in any way possible. after he got into that clubhouse fight with danny valencia and suffered a concussion, you knew it was just a matters of time. they have given him -- matter of time. they have given him his pink slip, $10 million they owe him next year. billy butler probably going to have a tough time in my opinion getting another job in the major leagues. the a's were swept this weekend by seattle. we've got a ton more sports. we're going to hear from jack del rio and, of course, derek carr, show you all the happenings in the nfl and it's not >> nobody! >> reporter: jim tomsula, simply miscast. chip kelly? who knows. it's difficult to get a sense of what does make the 49ers new coach tick. the team does not allow one on one interviews and his answers at press conferences are somewhat vague and evasive. for instance, after his highly successful college career his transition to the nfl was a disaster. kelly was basically run out of philadelphia for reasons seemingly more related to his handling of player issues off the field than his actual football acumen, but when asked if he was doing anything difference with the 49ers, he was glib. >> put it a lot more sunscreen on. >> reporter: since it is virtually impossible to ask kelly questions in anything other than a group scenario, it might make more sense to ask those he is coaching to get a sense of what chip kelly is all about. he's known as an offensive innovator whose fast paced game plans have met with mixed success. a man who won the no. 1 quarterback job this summer, blaine gabbert, is clearly on board with kelly's ideology. >> he's a tremendous play caller in the field. >> reporter: there's no question kelly brings a true coaching presence with him, adroitly handling the colin kaepernick firestorm and brushing off his handling of players in philadelphia. he has reached out to team leaders in san francisco and apparently made sure they know where he's coming from. >> we heard a lot of stories, but like i said, in the spring when he got here, he called me and ever since then the relationship has been fine. the past is the past. >> as far as coach kelly, he's a players coach. he takes good care of us and his energy level is there. so it's a trickle down effect. >> reporter: from all reports kelly considers himself not only an rate isor but a -- an innovator, but a coach who lives on the bleeding edge in technology when it comes to getting the most out of the athletes he coaches. so far his ideas have been well received. >> he's into the science of the sport. we had a couple doctors come in, a couple marines come in to talk about how to take care of your body because we perform at a high level. i'm into, that so i like it. >> reporter: at this point with a predictably rough season ahead kelly has coasted through without controversy his first several months on the job. the only way to keep things calm is winning, but with a derth of talent on this team, that went to be easy. we'll have to see a year from now what the question mark about chip kelly turns into. i'm mark ibanez for fox 2 sports. >> it's been a long list of coaches. we were all going over those, so many. >> some good, some not so good. we'll find out starting tomorrow night. let's get one more check of the weather. it looks like it's starting off cool. >> partly cloudy skies, a bit of a breeze and temperatures, yeah, no 90s, no 80s, just 60s and 70s. we warm up later in the week by thursday and friday up to the low 90s. >> nice and cool tomorrow night in santa clara. >> bring the jacket and sweater. >> good football weather. >> thanks for making ktvu your source for news. sports wrap is next. >> good night. a dramatic season opener down in new orleans, how a gutsy call propelled the raiders to one of their greatest comebacks in recent memory. >> the giants waking up from their 2nd half slumber doing something they haven't in two months. >> why the a's said adios to a player they still owe more than $10 million to. >> from big man on campus to third stringer in street clothes, how cal's jared goff is dealing with life as an nfl no. 1 pick. >> hey, no need to get angry. it's time to have a little fun. well, maybe not that much fun. sports wrap starts now. >> fox 2 nissan sports wrap starts now.
