Fremont police have arrested a man accused of secretly recording his former roommates having sex then using that tape as extortion. Police say the couple rented a room from 33yearold Maninder Adama and his wife. After they moved out in april, he sent them anonymous emails demanding money and threatening to make the tape public. Adama allegedly demanded 5,000, and if they couldnt pay up, police say he made them another offer. At some point the suspect said, you dont have to pay me the money but to the female victim, if you want to spend the night having sex with me, i can give you the video back for that instead. Investigators say they were able to track him down from the meta data in his emails. Alameda county prosecutors are reviewing the case before deciding whether to formally file charges. Santa clara county leaders are planning to open a sobering station for drunks as part of a move to provide care instead of incarceration and also reduce the number of inmates in the county jail. Ktvus Azenith Smith tells us the sobering station is a place where nonviolent people who are drunk will be able to sober up instead of being put in jail. Reporter come september, what used to be an auditorium inside the Santa Clara Countys Reentry Center will be transformed in to the countys latest fix for public drunkenness. There will be a nursing station, assessment station. Five recliners initially in here. Reporter a temporary Sobering Center with recliners for up to five people who are badly intoxicated. Outside trailers set up for bathrooms. The county sees it as a way to save money and time for officers who spent hours booking offenders in jail. Every time we house someone in the jail, it can be up to 190 a day. Thats the fairmont. Jails are really important places for people who are a risk to the community, maybe not such a good place for someone who was drunk in public. Reporter the cost, 12 million funded largely by a state grant, run by the countys Behavorial Health department. Its part of a bigger plan for jail reform to keep mentally ill people and those suffering from drug and alcohol addictions out of jail. A jail under scrutiny after the beating death of inmate Michael Tyree who was bipolar by jail guards. Today, for example, there are over 100 offend ers in jail and many, many of those, nearly 100 are mentally ill. Theyve served their sentences but they have nowhere to live. Reporter this idea separating drunks was tried before but it didnt work. The judge said it was too similar to the jail system. This time the station will have nurses and support staff to refer offenders to rehabilitation programs. From this back wall will be the Sobering Center. Reporter next year the county plans to have a permanent sobering station at the back of the reentry building. Right now its used for storage but will all be gutted to include showers, Laundry Services and a food pantry to help 20 people. The system has been pretty broken and this is just one other way that we can patch the system up and maintain a safe community. A woman was killed in a shooting that sparked a 14hour Long Police Standoff in San Francisco. A woman described as elderly was found with a gunshot wound. She later died at a hospital. Police say the suspected gunman went inside his home and refused to come out. People who live nearby were told to shelter in place. After 14 hours the man finally came out. Police say he had shot himself in the chest and tonight is in critical condition. Investigators have not identified the two or said what the relationship is between them. A fire caused substantial damage to an Elementary School in marin county this evening just ahead of the new school year. The fire broke out at dixie Elementary School on idleberry road in marinwood before 6 00 this evening. The sheriff tweeted this picture of the fire. It took about an hour to put it out. The fire chief says the damage was limited to the roof although crews had to mop up water inside. The cause is still under investigation but chief tom roach thinks the fire is connected to some construction work. They were putting a new hot tar roof on this building today so were thinking that had something to do with it.
