him? >> reporter: i went to his high school. when i was there, i introduced myself to the principal. she said ivan was very sweet and embedded in the community. something unusual for a freshman who had only been there for three months or so. she took time to tell me the story that she had to go to his locker and when she opened it up, she saw his skateboard. it hit her emotionally. she took it to ivan's mom. an emotional moment for those there. and for the deputies who told us they were sent home from the scene because they were very impacted by what happened last night when they found out that indeed a teenager had been killed. >> absolutely. just 14. thank you mike. sad news tonight about our missing tech worker in san francisco. it appears a body found in the bay is that of dan ha. >> reporter: the family had hoped the story of their son would not end in grief, but apparently it has. the san francisco medical examiner has not positively identified the body found floating in the bay near alcatraz yesterday, but relatives are convinced it is him who left his apartment on brennan street halloween night and never came back. >> clothes, wallet contents and phone match his personal belongings. >> reporter: it will be up to the medical examiner to determine the cause of death. hay don't believe ha took his own life. >> he left no note. he had a doctor's appointment the morningover his disappearance. >> reporter: family members created their own website dedicated to finding dan ha tried to collect surveillance video. they criticized the police saying relatives are the ones who fed them tip. >> i understand the family is upset. they want to know what happened to their loved one, but the department has worked hard. the investigator has come in on his weekends off and on evenings working late. >> reporter: a memorial service is being planned for dan ha for friday evening at saint matthews lutheran church. >> we are in shock. >> reporter: in san francisco, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. new video here of a water main break that has shut down a road this evening. take a look. the break sent water flooding into the street about 3:00 this afternoon. the municipal water district says an eight inch cast iron pipe broke. it remains closed while crews repair the broken bike. drivers are urged to avoid this area. let's talk about the weather now. some rain is on the way. we go to our weather center and our chief meteorologist bill martin. how long until it gets here? >> by 10:00 tonight. tune in, i will have some showers showing up in the north bay. we are getting rain as we go into tomorrow mornings compute as well. that is the headline. overnight shower ins the forecast. not a huge storm, but it is rain and we need it. it is a good thing. here's the current imagery, you can see this is drizzle, sprinkles. the dynamics, the strength of this weather system is right in here. this will slide through the bay area after midnight tonight. we will spin the radars, we have three working for you. all doppler radars, one out of davis, eureka, and another in the san jose area. but nothing showing up yet. they will be though by 10:00, 11:00 tonight. here is a computer model. about midnight tonight, look at that. that is some rain moving in. it will keep comeing in after this first initial burst. that means a wet morning commute. i will take you through the morning commute and give you an idea of what you can expect. there is more potential storms out behind this one. so we mr. have all that back after the break. >> a four-year-old santa rosa boy who fell is still hospitalized tonight with serious injuries. sebastian johnson has broken bones and other injuries. he was transferred to the children's hospital in oakland where he remains in intensive care. his father says he was with his family throwing rocks near the cliff when the little boy lost his footing and fell 225 feet to the rocks below. >> we have new information tonight on the death of a baby gorilla at the san jose zoo. we have received documents about what happened in the moments before and after she was crushed by a hydraulic door. heather holmes is here now with what that letter says. >> reporter: the accident happened last friday as the gorillas were taken into their nighttime enclosure. a zoo official sent us a handwritten statement by the zoo worker who was at the controls of the hydraulic door and it says in part, "i began to close lek rick door 4. when i looked at the door, it was closed and she was caught in the door across her chest. and immediately, i opened and i immediately opened the door and bewang took her into the room. it took 20 or 50 minutes to get bawang and kabibe separated. we were sent a photo of a sign posted near the door. it says that handlers must keep their hands on the emergency stop button at all times. it also says not to leave the electrical panel until operation of the door is complete. i want to show you some video of kabibe that was posted on facebook. you can see her interacting with visitors. so cute. the young gorilla is shown here playing. we are told her grandmother and primary caretaker along with the other gorillas are grieving her loss. the spokeswoman calls it a tragic accident and they were trying to investigate what went wrong on the night she went wrong. gridlock. trucks lined up to deliver and receive their loads at the port of oakland were instead stranded. two groups are deadlocked over a labor contract that expired back in july. they have been negotiating since may. cheetos bigger impasse for jobs and look ahead for the holidays. >> reporter: indeed, it has been a slow motion labor management train wreck that is building up. and if it should occur, you and i will pay for it. today, without notice, one of the port of oakland's heartest container terminals closed claiming labor troubles. labor workers were left in the lurch. >> i was in the terminal and i got turned around. they said basically, labor forces expired. >> you delay one trucker. another is delayed. >> reporter: the long contract battle between long shore workers and the pacific maritime association could quickly degenerate into a strike or a lockout up and down the entire west coast directly impacting 75,000 jobs. hundreds of thousands on the coast. holiday imports, experts, are already sending some cargo shifts to the gulf and canadian ports. >> if this doesn't get resolved, we are going the see significantly higher prices at the stores if the goods are there. >> reporter: they are implementing severe slow down tactics. the union says the shippers are mismanaging the terminals and adds this. >> after five months of negotiating, it shouldn't surprise anyone that the workers are frustrated. >> reporter: truckers say some pickups or drop offs which take an hour or so have been taking four hours. >> it is just going to get worse before it gets better. >> it takes away from my family. and also, it hurts the companies that we work for. >> reporter: it is one thing that the union and an employ can't get along, but either party could shut down all west coast ports as was done by the ship 20 years ago causing chaos and loss of billions of dollars a day. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. kaiser permanente wrapped up on striking issues. they struck in 35 cities. the nurses say they deserve sufficient staffing, training, and equipment. kaiser says it is not sure why the nurses are striking now and says it has responded to their contract proposal. today boast sides said they hope to resume bargaining as soon as possible. suspended state senator leland yee and raymond chow will not go to trial together. the first would focus on yee and jackson who were both allegedly involved in bribery schemes. raymond chow faces charges of money laundering and conspiracy. the judge has not set any trial dates. from sesame street to the cell block? >> i have never done ( siren wails ) ( pop music playing ) ♪ when you're ready ♪ ready, ready, ready ♪ come and get it ♪ get it, get it ♪ when you're ready, come and get it ♪ ♪ na na na na ♪ na na na na na na na ♪ ♪ when you're ready, come and get it ♪ ♪ na na na na... female announcer: it's a great big world and it can all be yours. here and only here. ♪ come and get it. >> two window washers are rescued after becoming trapped on a dangling scaffolding outside the nation's tallest building. they were 68 stories up on the one world trade center in new york city then they had a problem with the cable mechanism. the workers were stuck more than an hour, you see them there dangling. the fire department had to cut a hole through two inch thick triple pane glass to get the workers in to safety. >> the workers were safely brought in and transported to the hospital with only mild hypothermia. that was the extent of the injuries. the workers were tethered and communicating with firefighters over the radio through the entire ordeal. one world trade center opened up earlier this month. it is the tallest building in the western hemisphere. it has 104 stories and standing 1776 feet tall. the window washers were stranded about 1100 feet up. we decided to compare that fight with so landmark. the transamerica pyramid is 853 feet tall. the oakland tribune, 305 feet. you would have to stack five koit towers end to end to get as high as the window washers were. happening now, a rally for peace is underway after five people who went to the same high school in richmond were shot in a singing week. a one of them, a 16-year-old was killed. paul chambers is there tonight. >> reporter: there's hundreds of people out here from eight different high schools. owl of them here to celebrate the young man's life and call for an end of violence. >> he was a happy kid. and that made him a likable person on the campus. >> reporter: principal jose is talking about this young man rodney frazier. he was shot and killed friday outside his home. since last tuesday, four other current or former richmond high school students have been shot but are recovering from their injuries. brief counselors were at the school to help students and staff deal with the news. something he feels is happening all too often in this community. >> this is something that doesn't affect them the same way this would affect in a different community. there are sometimes, i think, too quick to move on. >> reporter: you see the people here in solidarity holding candle lights. we are expecting to hear from the family of rodney and the police chief. we will bring that part for you coming up at 6:00. live in richmond, paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. back to you frank. >> thank you paul. for the first time ever, a spacecraft has touched down on a comet. [ cheers and applause ] the landing set off big celebrations at the european space agency headquarters in germmy. nay said the land relaunched onto the two-and-a-half mile wide comet at 8:00 this morning. but it likely had a rough landing. harpoons failed to deploy properly that would have anchored it. but its instruments are working and it is sending these pictures back. they are hoping it provides them with all the valuable information we need. >> the aim is to unlock the treasures of this 4.6 billion years october. >> the idea is it for stay on the comet as it hurls toward the sun. things will be changing. let's go to chief meteorologist bill martin. we are getting the rain. >> and we are all wearing purple. that never happens. it will never happen again. yeah. >> we didn't call each other. >> no, gosh no. it is going to rain about here as we get late tonight. early tomorrow morning. the morning commute looks like it will be a little damp out there. mainly early morning. 4:00 a.m., 5:00 a.m. commute. and people do commute that early. temperatures today, like yesterday, very similar. a for clouds lingering around. boy, has it been cold? look at the nation's midsection. these are current temperatures, 2 degrees in denver. 6 degrees in billings. it has been very cold and it will continue to stay cold as the cold front moves off into the eastern part of the country. there is our weather system. not a real big one, but enough to bring us a few sprinkles. you see some green offshore now. that is light sprinkle activity. as we go into the next few hours, especially the north bay, you can see the showers will start to drop down. tomorrow morn education commute will be very wet. here are the hits, runs, and errors, the shower in the north bay about 9:00. midnight, we will see showers throughout parts of san francisco and south toward redwood city. the morning commute, i think we could see light showers from the sky. we will have wet on the roads and if we get a half inch of rain, that will be great. most of us will get a tenth to a quarter of an inch. so mostly cloudy this evening. the showers develop as this system gets closer. it is on a one to ten scale, the system is about a five for a wintertime storm. not a lot. not what we need certainly, but something. midnight tonight, there it is it's raining. here we go. at 3:00 a.m., now it is kind of right. it is all over. the frontal system is not that well organized so we are going to see splotchy sure activity. then, there is 7:00 a.m. so a lot of you guys are on the roadway at that time. you know how it is. it is not the kind of deal where you have a pooling of water, notes a lot of hydroplaning issue, but it will be slick. we have some stuff stacked onto us for next week. forecast highs, petaluma, 63. 63 san mateo. 67 pleasanton. sun should come out in the afternoon. temperatures stay relatively mild. to the weekend, we start to warm up. and we start to cool down and bring more showers in hopefully next week, something a little more progressive and stronger than what i'm pointing at right now. so yeah. rain is coming. i'm not overly excited. you can tell when i get worked up. i'm not worked up about this because we need more. but it is coming. we will get a quarter of an inch, to a tenth of an inch. i guess that is not purple. yours is pink. >> fucia. what! no service? seriously? you guys might actually have to talk. to each other? we do it all the time. i like it. should we? no. bank from almost anywhere with the citi mobile app. to learn more, visit citi.com/easierbanking >> complete bay area news coverage continues. this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. reporting on this before. really, it has been happening for years. a man dressed, you see here, as elmo going up to families at fisherman's wharf and unleashing a stream of obscenities. now a man known as evil elmo is behind bars. david stevenson has the story. >> reporter: the man in question is headed to court tomorrow. the case was brought to court by a prosecutor who made a list of aggressive behaviors. he has been called evil elmo along the fisherman's wharf. now 50-year-old adam sandler is charged with making a felony criminal threat along with misdemeanor nuisance and disturbing the peace charges. >> he has been victimizing the merchants and the tourists that congregate in the area. >> i have done nothing wrong. i'm a victim of a smear campaign. >> reporter: in july, he said merchants were trying to keep him from making a living while having his picture taken with tourists. >> businesses don't like it. >> reporter: merchants say he is prone to obscene outbursts and threatening behaviors. wharf businesses posted signs saying they are not obliged to tip him. >> he used an expletive and said, in a criminal threatening way, i'm going to rip your throat out. >> she actually had an employee quit the next day who was so fearful of mr. sandler. >> reporter: sandler's attorney this afternoon says he is just trying to earn a living but has been targeted by wharf merchants. his attorney says he is not a violent merchant and his rants are protected first amendment speech and he should be eligible for anger management counseling rather than prosecution. >> i never said not nice things to parents. i said things about business interests that i felt were violating my rights. >> reporter: sandler has been cited four times since january for violent language. >> the more alarming part of this case is because he is wearing an elmo costume, we tend to trivialize what he is doing. >> reporter: again, sandler is due in court for a hearing tomorrow. she held on $250,000 bail and his suit is held in evidence at san francisco's hall of justice. >> parents of little ones are upset about this evil elmo, but what impact has he had on business in the wharf? >> reporter: 10 to 12 million people visit the wharf. the fear is that there would be bad wort of mouth. that is people who had an encounter with mr. sandler and go back and tell people in their home countries or states this happened. they secured a temporary stay away order from him. the hope is if he is convicted they will be able to score a three-year stay away order. >> thanks david. a suspected drunk driver is facing charges after a woman was hit and killed by a car while walking in east san jose. the 74-year-old woman died at the scene. she was hit at barbary lane and south king road before 4:30 yesterday. today, she was identified as rohilia chohalino. the driver stopped and jamie hernandez was arrested. he is now in county jail. it poses a toxic threat to children and the problem is growing. the number of nicotine poisoning cases stemming from e- cigarettes has doubled this year. 2 investigates asked why a potential solution that could reduce the number of e- cigarettes, child poisoning is not required by law. >> reporter: melanie woodrow is here to explain. >> reporter: this is a child resistant cap like one you would find on a bottle of medicine. a quarter teaspoon of this liquid is enough to kill a child if it is ingested or absorbed. an increasing number of children in california are gaining access to it. the growing popularity of e- cigarettes accounts for the growing number of calls to poison control. in 2012, there were 28 calls. in 2013. nearly 106 calls. and with two months still left in 2014. that number has practically doubled to 203 calls. more than 60% of victims this year have been five years old our younger. a lot of e-cigarette nicotine liquid is candy flavors. mom nicole oliver says her daughter drank half a bottle. >> she has way over the od limit. and obviously, she was not even like this. you pick um her arm, and it would fall. >> it is so totally unregulated that we should be alarmed. >> reporter: bay area congresswoman jackie spira called for child resis tent caps on e-cigarette liquid to curb the poisoning. they wanted to put them on a test. we asked four and six-year-olds to try and open two bottles. one with the child resistant cap and one without it. we will have the result of that experiment and 10:00 and tell you the growing regulations the e-cigarette campaign could be facing in california. >> no such regulation yet. if it passed, which agency is in charge of such a thing? >> reporter: great question. it would likely be split between consumer product safety commission and fda. cpc would be responsible for the packaging and the fda, the contents inside the bottle. >> so just to be clear. right now, all you do is open the cap? that is remarkable that they have saved. they are really making a difference. let's talk about the weather. bring in chef meteorologist bill martin. we have things to talk about tonight. >> reporter: we do. we have showers back in the forecast. it is good. it is not a lot of rain, but it is some rain and it will impact us late tonight and early tomorrow morning. let me think. if you are pouring concrete, i wouldn't pour concrete or roof a house. if you have construction plans outdoors. it is not a ton of rain, but a little rain can mess that up. painting too. pe, i think you guys are inside for the most part. not a major storm, but it will be wet enough to curtail activities. there is the radar. i have three of them going. one up in eureka. picking up showers here. the system is not well organized at our latitude. for the north, it has some game, but down here, we are on the tail end. if we get a half inch of rain, that is great. that is between 11:00 tonight and 8:00 tomorrow morning. something like that. 25 miles an hour winds, so winds are not an issue, snow level is pretty high. 8,000 feet is up there at as level. here is the low pressure center. here it is. morning showers, morning commute. and as we get into next week, it is kind of a lower latitude weather system. not a low level snow producer but it could be a massive rain producer as we head into late this week. this is still when we have to watch. the models are not sure what to do with it. but they are lining up a little bit which is good. 11:00 tonight. right? [ laughter ] >> you know it will be backed up. >> we don't have to drive in the morning. sometimes i just kind of sit back with my coffee and watch it at mornings on 2. watch it all happening. >> think of me driving to school tomorrow morning when you are on the couch with your cup of coffee. >> i'll be missing out on that. >> thank you bill. a controversial fish kill began today in a san francisco lake. despite signs and fliers, some regular visitors say they are surprised. they spread a poison that suffocates fish but doesn't harm the other animals. it is a way of ridding the lake of invasive species. ktvu channel 2 news' john fowler was there to show us this is why the only way to restore the lake. >> reporter: it formed 2,000 years ago by an earthquake, san francisco's mountain lake, now a popular neighborhood park fenced off so crews could spread buckets of poisoning killing all the fish to save the lake. >> that is unfortunate. i don't think they necessarily need to kill the lake to save it. >> reporter: the trust which manages the lake says it had become an algae filled putrid pond. they tried for years to control the fish by netting them. poisoning is their last resort. fish put in the lake by people. some for sport, others just thrown away. >> getting rid of their pets. so there were probably a lot of different reasons about how they got in there. >> reporter: bonings expect all the fish to be dead within a few days. but they say the big challenge is how to keep people from putting nonnative species back in the lake. >> it need to be done. people never should have let their pets into the lake. >> reporter: then, when the invasive species are gone, they are going to restock the lake with native fish, frogs, and turtles. as for disposing of pet goldfish, they are going to create an amnesty station. they plan to restock this pond with native fish, ponds and turtles. >> a little pond site that is covered. and then, we will rescue them from that and take them to animal care and control. >> reporter: in a few years, they say the $13 million restoration project should return mountain like to prest pristine, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. coming up, we will show you how they are going to use hover board technology to make buildings safer for earthquakes. >> a woman beaten with a cell phone charger and the more serious crime a man was trying to commit with that unusual weapon. also, a bay area fire department in need of an ambulance is turning to the people it serves the most to help pay for it. we will explain why crowd sourcing may be the best answers. these stories and more coming up new at 6:00. bulldog: oooh! told me they will be out here at the intersection for tonight's vigil. that candle light vigil start at 6:00. >> i know you spoke so some of ivan's friends and teach tores. what did they say about him? >> reporter: i went to his high school. when i was there, i introduced myself to the principal. she said ivan was very sweet and embedded in the community. something unusual for a freshman who had only been there for three months or so. she took time to tell me the story that she had to go to his locker and when she opened it up, she saw his skateboard. it hit her emotionally. she took it to ivan's mom. an emotional moment for those there. and for the deputies who told us they were sent home from the scene because they were very impacted by what happened last night when they found out that indeed a teenager had been killed. >> absolutely. just 14. thank you mike. sad news tonight about our missing tech worker in san francisco. it appears a body found in the bay is that of dan ha. >> reporter: the family had hoped the story of their son would not end in grief, but apparently it has. the san francisco medical examiner has not positively identified the body found floating in the bay near alcatraz yesterday, but relatives are convinced it is him who left his apartment on brennan street halloween night and never came back. >> clothes, wallet contents and phone match his personal belongings. >> reporter: it will be up to the medical examiner to determine the cause of death. hay don't believe ha took his own life. >> he left no note. he had a doctor's appointment the morningover his disappearance. >> reporter: family members created their own website dedicated to finding dan ha tried to collect surveillance video. they criticized the police saying relatives are the ones who fed them tip. >> i understand the family is upset. they want to know what happened to their loved one, but the department has worked hard. the investigator has come in on his weekends off and on evenings working late. >> reporter: a memorial service is being planned for dan ha for friday evening at saint matthews lutheran church. >> we are in shock. >> reporter: in san francisco, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. new video here of a water main break that has shut down a road this evening. take a look. the break sent water flooding into the street about 3:00 this afternoon. the municipal water district says an eight inch cast iron pipe broke. it remains closed while crews repair the broken bike. drivers are urged to avoid this area. let's talk about the weather now. some rain is on the way. we go to our weather center and our chief meteorologist bill martin. how long until it gets here? >> by 10:00 tonight. tune in, i will have some showers showing up in the north bay. we are getting rain as we go into tomorrow mornings compute as well. that is the headline. overnight shower ins the forecast. not a huge storm, but it is rain and we need it. it is a good thing. here's the current imagery, you can see this is drizzle, sprinkles. the dynamics, the strength of this weather system is right in here. this will slide through the bay area after midnight tonight. we will spin the radars, we have three working for you. all doppler radars, one out of davis, eureka, and another in the san jose area. but nothing showing up yet. they will be though by 10:00, 11:00 tonight. here is a computer model. about midnight tonight, look at that. that is some rain moving in. it will keep comeing in after this first initial burst. that means a wet morning commute. i will take you through the morning commute and give you an idea of what you can expect. there is more potential storms out behind this one. so we mr. have all that back after the break. >> a four-year-old santa rosa boy who fell is still hospitalized tonight with serious injuries. sebastian johnson has broken bones and other injuries. he was transferred to the children's hospital in oakland where he remains in intensive care. his father says he was with his family throwing rocks near the cliff when the little boy lost his footing and fell 225 feet to the rocks below. >> we have new information tonight on the death of a baby gorilla at the san jose zoo. we have received documents about what happened in the moments before and after she was crushed by a hydraulic door. heather holmes is here now with what that letter says. >> reporter: the accident happened last friday as the gorillas were taken into their nighttime enclosure. a zoo official sent us a handwritten statement by the zoo worker who was at the controls of the hydraulic door and it says in part, "i began to close lek rick door 4. when i looked at the door, it was closed and she was caught in the door across her chest. and immediately, i opened and i immediately opened the door and bewang took her into the room. it took 20 or 50 minutes to get bawang and kabibe separated. we were sent a photo of a sign posted near the door. it says that handlers must keep their hands on the emergency stop button at all times. it also says not to leave the electrical panel until operation of the door is complete. i want to show you some video of kabibe that was posted on facebook. you can see her interacting with visitors. so cute. the young gorilla is shown here playing. we are told her grandmother and primary caretaker along with the other gorillas are grieving her loss. the spokeswoman calls it a tragic accident and they were trying to investigate what went wrong on the night she went wrong. gridlock. trucks lined up to deliver and receive their loads at the port of oakland were instead stranded. two groups are deadlocked over a labor contract that expired back in july. they have been negotiating since may. cheetos bigger impasse for jobs and look ahead for the holidays. >> reporter: indeed, it has been a slow motion labor management train wreck that is building up. and if it should occur, you and i will pay for it. today, without notice, one of the port of oakland's heartest container terminals closed claiming labor troubles. labor workers were left in the lurch. >> i was in the terminal and i got turned around. they said basically, labor forces expired. >> you delay one trucker. another is delayed. >> reporter: the long contract battle between long shore workers and the pacific maritime association could quickly degenerate into a strike or a lockout up and down the entire west coast directly impacting 75,000 jobs. hundreds of thousands on the coast. holiday imports, experts, are already sending some cargo shifts to the gulf and canadian ports. >> if this doesn't get resolved, we are going the see significantly higher prices at the stores if the goods are there. >> reporter: they are implementing severe slow down tactics. the union says the shippers are mismanaging the terminals and adds this. >> after five months of negotiating, it shouldn't surprise anyone that the workers are frustrated. >> reporter: truckers say some pickups or drop offs which take an hour or so have been taking four hours. >> it is just going to get worse before it gets better. >> it takes away from my family. and also, it hurts the companies that we work for. >> reporter: it is one thing that the union and an employ can't get along, but either party could shut down all west coast ports as was done by the ship 20 years ago causing chaos and loss of billions of dollars a day. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. kaiser permanente wrapped up on striking issues. they struck in 35 cities. the nurses say they deserve sufficient staffing, training, and equipment. kaiser says it is not sure why the nurses are striking now and says it has responded to their contract proposal. today boast sides said they hope to resume bargaining as soon as possible. suspended state senator leland yee and raymond chow will not go to trial together. the first would focus on yee and jackson who were both allegedly involved in bribery schemes. raymond chow faces charges of money laundering and conspiracy. the judge has not set any trial dates. from sesame street to the cell block? >> i have never done ( siren wails ) ( pop music playing ) ♪ when you're ready ♪ ready, ready, ready ♪ come and get it ♪ get it, get it ♪ when you're ready, come and get it ♪ ♪ na na na na ♪ na na na na na na na ♪ ♪ when you're ready, come and get it ♪ ♪ na na na na... female announcer: it's a great big world and it can all be yours. here and only here. ♪ come and get it. >> two window washers are rescued after becoming trapped on a dangling scaffolding outside the nation's tallest building. they were 68 stories up on the one world trade center in new york city then they had a problem with the cable mechanism. the workers were stuck more than an hour, you see them there dangling. the fire department had to cut a hole through two inch thick triple pane glass to get the workers in to safety. >> the workers were safely brought in and transported to the hospital with only mild hypothermia. that was the extent of the injuries. the workers were tethered and communicating with firefighters over the radio through the entire ordeal. one world trade center opened up earlier this month. it is the tallest building in the western hemisphere. it has 104 stories and standing 1776 feet tall. the window washers were stranded about 1100 feet up. we decided to compare that fight with so landmark. the transamerica pyramid is 853 feet tall. the oakland tribune, 305 feet. you would have to stack five koit towers end to end to get as high as the window washers were. happening now, a rally for peace is underway after five people who went to the same high school in richmond were shot in a singing week. a one of them, a 16-year-old was killed. paul chambers is there tonight. >> reporter: there's hundreds of people out here from eight different high schools. owl of them here to celebrate the young man's life and call for an end of violence. >> he was a happy kid. and that made him a likable person on the campus. >> reporter: principal jose is talking about this young man rodney frazier. he was shot and killed friday outside his home. since last tuesday, four other current or former richmond high school students have been shot but are recovering from their injuries. brief counselors were at the school to help students and staff deal with the news. something he feels is happening all too often in this community. >> this is something that doesn't affect them the same way this would affect in a different community. there are sometimes, i think, too quick to move on. >> reporter: you see the people here in solidarity holding candle lights. we are expecting to hear from the family of rodney and the police chief. we will bring that part for you coming up at 6:00. live in richmond, paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. back to you frank. >> thank you paul. for the first time ever, a spacecraft has touched down on a comet. >> reporter: 10 to 12 million people visit the wharf. the fear is that there would be bad wort of mouth. that is people who had an encounter with mr. sandler and go back and tell people in their home countries or states this happened. they secured a temporary stay away order from him. the hope is if he is convicted they will be able to score a three-year stay away order. >> thanks david. a suspected drunk driver is facing charges after a woman was hit and killed by a car while walking in east san jose. the 74-year-old woman died at the scene. she was hit at barbary lane and south king road before 4:30 yesterday. today, she was identified as rohilia chohalino. the driver stopped and jamie hernandez was arrested. he is now in county jail. it poses a toxic threat to children and the problem is growing. the number of nicotine poisoning cases stemming from e- cigarettes has doubled this year. 2 investigates asked why a potential solution that could reduce the number of e- cigarettes, child poisoning is not required by law. >> reporter: melanie woodrow is here to explain. >> reporter: this is a child resistant cap like one you would find on a bottle of medicine. a quarter teaspoon of this liquid is enough to kill a child if it is ingested or absorbed. an increasing number of children in california are gaining access to it. the growing popularity of e- cigarettes accounts for the growing number of calls to poison control. in 2012, there were 28 calls. in 2013. nearly 106 calls. and with two months still left in 2014. that number has practically doubled to 203 calls. more than 60% of victims this year have been five years old our younger. a lot of e-cigarette nicotine liquid is candy flavors. mom nicole oliver says her daughter drank half a bottle. >> she has way over the od limit. and obviously, she was not even like this. you pick um her arm, and it would fall. >> it is so totally unregulated that we should be alarmed. >> reporter: bay area congresswoman jackie spira called for child resis tent caps on e-cigarette liquid to curb the poisoning. they wanted to put them on a test. we asked four and six-year-olds to try and open two bottles. one with the child resistant cap and one without it. we will have the result of that experiment and 10:00 and tell you the growing regulations the e-cigarette campaign could be facing in california. >> no such regulation yet. if it passed, which agency is in charge of such a thing? >> reporter: great question. it would likely be split between consumer product safety commission and fda. cpc would be responsible for the packaging and the fda, the contents inside the bottle. >> so just to be clear. right now, all you do is open the cap? [ laughter ] >> you know it will be backed up. >> we don't have to drive in the morning. sometimes i just kind of sit back with my coffee and watch it at mornings on 2. watch it all happening. >> think of me driving to school tomorrow morning when you are on the couch with your cup of coffee. >> i'll be missing out on that. >> thank you bill. a controversial fish kill began today in a san francisco lake. despite signs and fliers, some regular visitors say they are surprised. they spread a poison that suffocates fish but doesn't harm the other animals. it is a way of ridding the lake of invasive species. ktvu channel 2 news' john fowler was there to show us this is why the only way to restore the lake. >> reporter: it formed 2,000 years ago by an earthquake, san francisco's mountain lake, now a popular neighborhood park fenced off so crews could spread buckets of poisoning killing all the fish to save the lake. >> that is unfortunate. i don't think they necessarily need to kill the lake to save it. >> reporter: the trust which manages the lake says it had become an algae filled putrid pond. they tried for years to control the fish by netting them. poisoning is their last resort. fish put in the lake by people. some for sport, others just thrown away. >> getting rid of their pets. so there were probably a lot of different reasons about how they got in there. >> reporter: bonings expect all the fish to be dead within a few days. but they say the big challenge is how to keep people from putting nonnative species back in the lake. >> it need to be done. people never should have let their pets into the lake. >> reporter: then, when the invasive species are gone, they are going to restock the lake with native fish, frogs, and turtles. as for disposing of pet goldfish, they are going to create an amnesty station. they plan to restock this pond with native fish, ponds and turtles. >> a little pond site that is covered. and then, we will rescue them from that and take them to animal care and control. >> reporter: in a few years, they say the $13 million restoration project should return mountain like to prest pristine, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. coming up, we will show you how they are going to use hover board technology to make buildings safer for earthquakes. >> a woman beaten with a cell phone charger and the more serious crime a man was trying to commit with that unusual weapon. also, a bay area fire department in need of an ambulance is turning to the people it serves the most to help pay for it. we will explain why crowd sourcing may be the best answers. these stories and more coming up new at 6:00. bulldog: oooh!
