Tomorrow well see what happens. Reporter the courtroom was packed with family and friends of the two convicted men. Lawrence den ard and willey torrence. Carlos nava was three years old when he was shot and killed on international boulevard just blocks away from his home. The boy was on a toy car stroller when he was shot by the drive by shooting. The intended targets were gang members. Both are facing life in prison for the life of carlos nava. No one from the nava family was in court today to hear any of these proceedings and no one from the nava family was in court last month when those two men were convicted. He even called them walking billboards with tattoos for their gang. Something that one of the Defense Attorneys objected to strenuously. Again the sentencing has been continued now to tomorrow morning. Both face life in prison. A 26yearold man was killed during a day of fun at the beach in halfmoon bay when a sand tunnel collapsed and buried him. Several agencies helped with the rescue of samuel pies. By that point it was too late and he died from his injuries. There are condolences on his Facebook Page today. Pies was from san leandro. Weve seen pretty wild swings in the weather over the last 24 hours including thunder and lightning. More than two dozen strikes. And by this afternoon clouds gave way to sun. Then we heard the big boom. And we didnt know what it was. Reporter the energy that caused that boom landed just outside his home. There was debris flying all over the place. I didnt know if someone had blown up or what the situation was. Then discovered that lightning had struck. Lightning also hit kpbs power grid knocking the station off for some time. A lightning streak on a power pole just a few blocks away briefly disrupted power there. A little later marin firefighters and u. S. Park Service Police were not looking for gold at the end of this point bays rainbow but for lightning lit he pointed out where the smoke was. We tried to figure out a way to get into this. Today San Francisco is enacting a state law that supporters say will help get help for people who are suffering from severe Mental Illness and also keep the public safe. Mayor ed lee approved the ordnance today under morris law. Heavily ill people who have been jailed or hospitalized twice must be forced to enter treatment. Some critics say the law criminalizes Mental Illness but backers say people who are sick have a right to treatment. Ultimately these are the most as a the most vulnerable in our society. Reporter the law is named for 19yearold Mental Health worker laura wilcox. She was shot to death by a mentally ill man who has resisted efforts to force him into treatment. A deadly shooting in San Francisco triggered a force that spanned several hours. News chopper 2 was over head late this afternoon as officers scoured the area. Officers were first called out on a report that one had been shot. When investigators arrived. Shortly after the victim was found. Tonight police are still searching for the shooter. In just about four hours from now, president obama is expected to land for a very quick trip here in the bay area. Its part of the three day west Coast Funding sweep. Also in San Francisco, an unusual rescue today involved in a homeless man who was trapped inside the back of a recycling truck. The homeless man had been sleeping in the back of a dumpster when the recycling truck emptied right into a dumpster. A spokesperson for recology says the man was in the truck when the cardboard inside was compacted. The good news here is that cardboard can kind of be cushiony. The truck did partially compact but not enough to injure the man in a really serious way. The man was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for a shoulder injury. Chevron accepted a more environmentally proposal. The deal provides 60 million for programs that would reduce greenhouse, and create green jobs among other benefits. One bay area Water District has a new plan to get people to cut back. They want to hire so called water cops to crack down on people wasting water. The Santa Clara County water board will meet in half an hour to discuss the plan. Its a half Million Dollars program the Water District says its necessary given the drought. Azenith smith is at the meeting where she learned customers may see a slight increase in their water bills to pay for this. Reporter that is a possibility. Although nothing has been determined and rates wouldnt go up right away. The Water District says its losing 20 million because of this drought. And not enough conservation efforts are being made.
