are live in mill valley with the personal way firefighters are spreading the word. >> reporter: we are live off panoramic highway where you get a sense of the fire danger. you have homes backed up against thousands of acres of wild land which you can see is drying out after four months without any rain. >> i'm from the fire department. >> reporter: this team from the fire department is one of six stations charged within inspecting homes. >> i will take a quick look and can come back with recommendations and give you flyers. >> reporter: the fire department hired 60 extra people to help inspect homes mill valley to point reyes this weekend. >> cost me $360 to have those trimmed. >> reporter: this resident got a thumbs up for her measures but was warned that cuttings left near the street could be a problem. >> the fire comes in, catch its this and it's made it across the road. what we like to see is the break up of the fuel. >> reporter: checklist details like keeping grass to three inches may seem nitpicky but it matters. just two days ago a grass fire threatened homes but this chopper two video shows the clearing of defensible space helped stop the blaze. rainfall totals are below average and that's why fire departments are also conducting home inspections for fire safety. now here in marin the academy to train seasonal firefighters hired expressly to battle the wildfire this is summer is supposed to start next week. reporting live in marin, patty lee. >> a mobile home fire sparked a small grass fire early this morning. cal fire said the mobile home on manor lane caught fire around 2:00 this morning. nobody was inside the home. the flames also spread to some vegetation nearby and those flames charred about a quarter acre of grass and brush. cal fire and sonoma firefighters helped put out the fire. nobody was hurt and the cause of the fire is under investigation. mark is here now with a current red flag numbers for the north bay and another part of the bay area. >> yeah. of course the strong off shore winds and the dry humidity, always a big concern all because of this. the dry brush increasing in coverage and you can see toward mount diablo. as far as the satellite we have clear skies, fog free, we will look at some of the winds now and you will notice it's a wind we are worried about toward fairfield. around 15 miles an hour, that is that dry off shore flow importing the low humidity levels and also the very warm temperatures. taking a look now at some of the current numbers you can still see lower 90's, the 5:00 hour. out toward fairfield, concord and livermore. down ton san francisco in the mid-70s at 75. once again that red flag warning in place for the north bay hills and the east bay hills, extended until 8:00 tomorrow morning with those dry conditions in place. winds could be gusting to around 30 miles an hour, the winds aren't extreme but the big concern will be the low moisture levels and here for example out toward the oakland hills a current temperature of 80 degrees, winds around 16 miles an hour byte moisture around 20%. coming up when the fog will return and cool off the entire bay area. that's coming up. >> thank you. investigators in the south bay are trying to democrat what sparked two grass fires that broke out just with in about 30 minutes of each other yesterday. the first fire was reported just before 1:30 yesterday afternoon near highway 87 in south san jose. the other started halt a landfill. we first showed you this video last night on the 10:00 news. it was taken by a resident of the highway 87 fire. wind gusts of up to 25 miles an hour fueled the flames here. some homes were threatened and one point people were warned to shelter in place. nine acres were burned but no structures were damaged. a brush fire that came close to burning four homes last night appears suspicious. the fire was reported just before seven near regada point. heavy brush fueled it. they say the closest fire hydrant wasn't working. >> fire official are expected to decide tomorrow on a series of budget cut that could affect fire protection. the fire district will have to decide on cut backs after voters rejected a parcel tax in last tuesday's election. it would have generated $100 million to fund fire services. officials will consider whether to cut 16 jobs and close three stations in bethel, and brentwood orcutt 19 jobs and close two of those stations. >> if you participated in last month's beta breakers race san francisco police want you to check your photographs from that day. a man who retold you was sucker punched at the race has died from his injuries. we are live with new information on the victim and the search for the person responsible. >> reporter: it's going to set the scene. it was beta breakers sunday here near sharon meadow. steven martin was sucker punched, he fell and hit his head. he was taken off life support friday. family and friends of steven martin set up facebook pages to support the family and generate tips. martin was in the hospital may 20th after he was punched after the race. in a statement friday family said as for the doctor's recommendation we took him off life support friday and let nature take its course. thank you for your prayers and support. san francisco police are saying anyone who ran the race could be a potential witness. katie was nowhere near the fight but said it would be easy to miss a fight in the crowd. >> it kind of makes sense that something could go unnoticed or in everything that was happening that terrible things like that could happen. >> reporter: martin was wearing a green troll doll wig and argued with a group of men in 49ers jerseys, that's when one of them ran toward him and punched him. he fell and struck his head on the curb. police, family and friend friends believe someone has the suspects in ray photograph or video from the race. >> even if it's in the background. you want to think that almost every inch was photographed during that day. >> reporter: witnesses describe thea tactorsa as i group of latino men in their 20s. they say they were with a group of women who were died including the suspect shooter and another was critically wounded. it happened about 10:40 inside a south sacramento neighborhood home. the police say the shooting may be gang related. the sacramento bee reports two of the three victims are described as spiritual leaders. >> oakland police called to investigate a possible robbery of marijuana plants today. it came about 10:00 on wood street near 14th street in west oakland. neighbors said someone broke into a unit and made off with a undisclosed number of pot plants. police said they were investigating a burglary but wouldn't say what if anything was taken. san leandro police arrested a suspected house burglar. the 18-year-old terrell sanders was arrested yesterday afternoon. that after two witnesses said they saw him coming out of the backyard of a home. officers say they arrested him a short time later coming out of another home and arrested him on charges of burglary and resisting arrest. >> one person was seriously hurt today in a car crash. the highway patrol said the crash may have been caused by alcohol. it happened around 5:40 this morning on northbound highway 85 in sunnyvale. the driver was going more than 100 miles an hour when he hit the center divide. he was thrown out of the truck. officers say the driver wasn't wearing a seatbelt and say he may have been drunk. >> anyone who ever hoped to escape alcatraz likely wanted to keep running. that's what thousands of athletes did today in the escape from alcratraz triathlon. >> reporter: they almost look like seals, 2,000 people swimming to the shoreline for the race. the first swimmer out of the water stopped to put on his shoes, the second ran past him put his shoes on later and went onto win the entire race. andy potts completed the swim, bike and run in 2 hours three minutes, it's his 5th time winning. >> our course is as beautiful as it's ever been and that's why people come back. >> reporter: the biggest draw is the swim. it's just a mile and a half from the rock to the shore but the conditions are tough. >> 55 degrees, you have about a three to four knott current that wants to take you under the gate. >> reporter: they have to dodge marine life but there is nothing to danger. >> no sharks,. >> reporter: after the swim there is a 18-mile bike ride followed by a eight mile run. not only is the race challenging but is very popular. eight thousand people want to sign up for the race. they have to enter a lottery and only 2,000 can compete. mike did this race 14 years ago and still remembers his favorite moment. >> touching the sand as you come in for the first time. it's a great experience to see your friends and family as you kind of come out of the bay. >> reporter: its something people of all ages got to police shot and killed a pit bull during a probation check at a house many concord. they say they arrived at the home yesterday evening just after 5:00. they say shortly after that a male pit bull charged at them. at first they fired bean bags but when it didn't stop him the officer fired his gun. nobody was home and police didn't make arrests. >> the man convicted of killing a man and his two sons is scheduled to be sentenced tomorrow. edwin ramos was convicted of three counts of first degree murder in the shooting deaths of the three men. prosecutors argued in court that he shot the three in their car thinking they were rival gang members. he is facing life without the possibility of parole. >> we are learning new details about a man who fell off a cliff while whale watching yesterday. the man a 22-year-old fell off the cliff just before 6:00 yesterday evening. his friend who was with him said he had been climbing along the cliff when he slipped and fell and was washed away by a wave. the coast guard searched last night and the sheriff's office helicopter searched again today but there was no sign of him. >> in less than three hours one of the runways at the airport will be partly closed. airport officials say construction crews will be working on runway 29 from eight tonight through six tomorrow morning. the airport duty manager said planes will still take off but will land on another runway on the northfield. the closure will not affect passengers but some residents in the area may notice more air craft noise and planes flying in different patterns. >> apple has public safety and education and that those jobs not what he considers big government. ohio senator rob port man is down playing speculation that he is on the short list to become romney's vice president candidate. yesterday he helped open romney's high lie campaign headquarters, he wouldn't comment and said the choice is up to the campaign. as in 2008 ohio is a critical state in the election. no republican has ever won without it. this week in arizona a special election will be held to fill the seat of gabreille giffords, she resigned in january to focus on recovering after being shot last year during a citizen's meeting. this tuesdaye election is expected to be closed. jessie kelley who barely lost to her in 2010 is running against ron barber a former aide. democrats need to wildfire north of boulder. it started yesterday morning and quickly spread to at least 8,000 acres. officials say high temperatures and dry conditions are fueling the fire. so far 18 structures have been destroyed or damaged and authorities are going door to door order evacuations, nobody has been injured but one person is missing. a manhunt is underway in alabama for a gunman who opened fire at a college pool party killing three. the fire broke out in the apartment complex near the university campus. the gunman identified by police as desmonte leonard argued two men over a woman. six people were shot, three fatally. the victims include current and former football players. the police official said he doesn't believe they were targeted but instead he thinks it was a fight that got out of hand. >> the spanish prime minister is tempering expectations about what a european union bailout would accomplish. he said today that the bailout would help shore up the banks but he warned it won't prevent the country from further job losses and it won't pull the country out of its second recession in three years. currently unemployment in spain stands at a record high of about 25%. yesterday spain agreed to accept a bailout of 125a billion dollars. a formal loan request is expected before june 21stu. >> concerns that the former egyptian president is rapidly growing very ill, slipping in and out of consciousness. it was just a week week ago when he was convicted of being an accessory to the killing of hundreds of protesters during the up rising. his health has been failing in recent months but it has increased rapidly since he was sentenced to life in prison. one unnamed official said the 82-year-old was only on liquids and yogur? . the president of venezuela said the latest round of tests after his cancer treatment show he is doing fine. he plans to register tomorrow to run again for president and that he expects to win in october. the past year he has had two surgeries and radiation therapy to remove times. he hasn't disclosed the type of cancer. >> in other news of the world in kenya the president has called for a three day mourning period after a high ranking member of the government died in a helicopter crash. the crash near the capitol took the life of the internal security minister and nine others. there is no official cause of the crash, though there is no evidence to suggest it was a result of a terrorist attack or any other foul play. he took a hard line against the militant group in somalia. announced he would run for president of kenya next year. in syria amid funerals and more government shelling the main opposition group has picked a secular kurd as it's new leader. it's seen as trying to pull together the opposition. in april the un estimated 9,000 people had died in the 15 month long conflict. activists put the death toll at more than 13,000. and in nigeria two attacks near churches claimed the lives of at least six people. in one attack a suicide bomber allegedly detonated explosives outside a church, four people were killed and 40 wounded. in northeast nigeria two were shot outside a church. a sect claimed responsibility. the group is blamed for killing more than 560 people this year. >> possible boxing rematch may be in the works after a split decision last night after the manny, timothy bradley fight. >> bradley! >> at candlestick. the prices range from 85 to $200 a game but fans must pay a one time license fee and that ranges between two to $12,000. despite that, officials expect selling out once the stadium authorities still have warranting for them, warrants that will stay active until their 100th birthday. >> pleasant hills police chief has announced his retirement. pete dunbar has been chief since 2006 and worked in law enforcements for 30 years. he told the times he is retiring for financial reasons, he said that he would loose money if he kept working any longer. his base salary was $193,000. >> a community meeting is scheduled for tomorrow in san francisco to discuss regulations of party buses. some club owners along broadway are unhappy with the buses that bring hundreds of out of towners and locals to drink and dance on the weekends . members of the entertainment commission will attend tomorrow's meeting. that is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the main library branch. >> apple getting ready for its developer's conference tomorrow. their new ceo tim cook is expected to deliver the key note address tomorrow morning. in april five thousand passes to the event at $1,600 each were snapped up and left in two hours. the developers conference goes on monday through friday. also tomorrow, crews expected to start filming a movie about the life of the apple co founder. ashton kutcher has the lead role. it will start production at his childhood home. job's stepmother who still lives there gave permission for the filming. it'll focus on his life between 1971 and 2000. the film makers want to create a gripping and truthful portrayal. >> gas prices have fallen 19- cents a gallon nationally over the last month but the price, the drop of prices here in the bay area hasn't been that dramatic. in san francisco, a gallon of regular averaged $4.25 today according to aaa. that's down a nickel from 30 days ago. in san jose it cost $4.15. that's down seven cents and in oakland the average cost was $4.16. that's down six cents a month ago. unemployment benefits are ending this month for tens of thousands of people who have been out of work long term. sandra introduces us to one of those unemployed workers struggling to navigate the tough new job market. >> reporter: home improvement what richard does to stay busy since he has been unemployed for two years. >> its been frustrating, i have never had a problem finding work before. >> this 53-year-old electrical engineer used to earn six figures, now he is forced to think outside the box. >> you know like one of the jobs i saw was teller at the local credit union. it was a part-time job at like $12 an hour but still something. >> reporter: he is like five million jobless americans, who have been out of work for more than six months. he was collecting unemployment benefits but they expired in december. he is tapping in to his savings to make ends meet. this month 70,000 more jobless americans across two dozen states will share his plight when their benefits run out and all long term unemployment insurance will eventually be phased out by the end of the year. the new timeline was set in february when lawmakers passed what they promised will be the last extension of long term benefits. congress also cut down the maximum length of time a person can collect unemployment from 99 weeks to 73. >> it's frightening to realize that one safety net is being pulled out. >> reporter: the political divide over another extension is deep. republicans say it's to costly and lets people stay on unemployment longer. democrats say its money that finds its way back in to the economy and is the best way to help the unemployed. the big question is whether congress will take up the issue before election day. washington. >> an online petition urging the boy scouts to abandon its anti gay policy is nearing the 300,000 signature mark. it started after a den mother was dismissed for being gay. she said it started she started asking questions about financial problem was in the local scout chapter. leaders say they don't allow openly gay people in the organization. >> mission of the boy scouts of america is to develop character and leadership skills and the youth of today to be the youth of tomorrow. anything that distracts in from that mission distracts what our program is. >> scouting managers say a committee will look at petition but no changes are expected. >> there is word tonight of a disturbing use of prescription drugs by some high school college students to get better grades and test scores. pills used to treat attention deficit order act as a stimulant and they say it lets them study harder, remember more and do better on tests. some have now become hooked complete bay area forecast. . thousands flocked to san francisco for a yearly festival. it's the 35th year for the fair. there was of course lots of dancing, crafts, food and musical acts headlined by bit more in the way of fog in the forecast over the next few days, you can see we have clear skies looking toward oakland and open that warmed up in to the mid80s this afternoon. showing you this on the satellite. mostly clear skies out there and tracking the winds, seeing more of the on shore breeze around san francisco. that's the cooling breeze but the other extreme, the bay area not so simple. we have another wind direction as well with the more of the off shore breeze. complete opposite here and also bumped up the fire danger. and we have the red flag warning posted until 8:00. here is a look at the knobs, 81 in san francisco. oakland mid80's. 90's toward santa rosa, napa livermore and antioch. san jose around 90 degrees. forecast headlines, for tonight we have this, mostly clear, mild tomorrow, it'll be warm to hot. then for wednesday and thursday, we increase the fog and as a result temperatures come down a few degrees as we head toward the midweek forecast. overnight lows tomorrow morning in the 50s to right around 60 degrees, mostly clear, but we could have a patch or two of fog develop near parts of the immediate coastline, kind of bumping up near parts of the -- parts of the shoreline. here is the cloud forecast model show you this, in fact here we are tomorrow morning at eight and there is that patch of fog developing near port parts of ocean beach. this is a change for tomorrow. temperatures do cool off coast side and around the bay but inland the complete opposite with high pressure still firmly in command of our weather. that red contourmalining up with the 90's and the warmest locations, santa rosa, antioch, concord, livermore, back up into the low to mid09's by three or four tomorrow afternoon. increase that on shore breeze as we head toward tuesday and wednesday. as a result everybody cools off a few degrees by that time frame. here is the look at the forecast highs for monday. santa rosa 93, fairfield 94, san rafael in the upper 80's around the bay, we will cool it off. probably about three to six degrees but inland it'll warm back up. back up to 95 antioch, san jose at 90, with will cool off coast side but a fairly nice day but a patch or two of fog. san francisco downtown, back in to the 70's around 76. mere is a look ahead. the five day forecast, and continues especially coast side, into tuesday, the real cooling that kicks in by wednesday and thursday. the weekend always in view, heather and ken we could track another potential warm up, try to iron out the details. kind of a roller coaster. >> sounds nice. >> very nice.
