obviously not frank maldcotte. it's fun being inside instead of outside like i usually am. >> we sent rosemary outside. >> we have switched positions. >> reporter: good morning, guys. >> you had to get outside, didn't you? >> reporter: you're right. the weather is too beautiful to be indoors so make sure you get outdoors. in fact, come on over to jack london square for today, pedalfest is going on. going to be a huge event. i will give you a sneak peek behind me. this is what we call bike art. everything bicycle going on here for today, 20,000 or so folks expected out here. there's going to be a bike contest, anything from who can fix their flats the fastest to who can actually lock up their bike the fastest. it's going to be a kids bike parade. a lot of fun going on out here. music, food. coming up in 10 minutes i will interview one of the organizers, she will lay it out for you, we will be here all morning long talking about what's happening here. your weather includes a huge warmup. right now mostly clear skies, the winds generally calm, low 50s to low 60s around the bay area but we are looking at a rapid warmup. i am talking 90s for some of our inland locations. by lunchtime as we get into the second part of the day, we are going to hit 100 degrees for some of those hotter spots. we are going to have 70s along the coast and we will have 80s around the bay. when i come back, i will have that graphic for you, i will show you the extended forecast because this heatup is going to stick around for quite some time. in the meanwhile i'll send it back to you guys. >> thanks so much, rosemary. new this morning, an explosion rocked a large demonstration in the capital of afghanistan. this is the first footage of the attack that we are showing you now. at least 61 people are dead and another 207 injured. isis is now claiming responsibility for the bombing. an ethnic group was demanding that a regional electric powerline be routed through their impoverished home province but two suicide bombers then attacked at the end of the four hour protest. the human rights group amnesty international says the horrific attack demonstrates the utter disregard that armed groups have for human life. turning to our other top story, people in munich are searching for a motive in a mass shooting at a crowded shopping mall. investigators there say the gunman killed nine people before turning that gun on himself. early this morning police announced they had identified the killer as an 18-year-old munich man who was under psychiatric care for depression. investigators believe at this time that he acted alone and they say there's no evidence he has any ties to isis. yesterday's mass shooting prompted a state of emergency across munich. police shut down the city's entire mass transit system as well as the city's busiest roadways. they were responding to earlier reports that several shooters were responsible for the mass killing inside that shopping mall. it now appears that the suspect they have identified as the shooter was the only shooter. >> i heard several shots, four or five and screamed and went out on the balcony and saw somebody was running around there on the parking level with a handgun and shouting and then i heard people screaming. >> overnight police say many of those killed were teenagers, 16 people were wounded in the gun fire. three of those victims listed now in critical condition. dozens of travelers adjusting their travel plans. yesterday we found passengers on direct flights from munich to san jose airport, had to switch their flights to fly into frankfurt instead. we caught up with a couple visiting from germany. they say they can't believe an attack happened so close to their home. >> don't have touched the terrorism near our town. munich is really near to us. my family lives in munich. [ speaking foreign language ] >> it's hard to hear. >> and while adjustments were made, we did not find anyone who cancelled their travel plans because of the munich attack. six new gun control bills have now been signed into law. among the tighter restrictions is a law requiring anyone making a homemade gun to apply for a serial number and submit to a background check. the governor's office says it hopes the measure will crack down on untraceable guns which are also known as ghost guns. other laws include requirements that people turn in high capacity magazines and submit to background checks for ammunition sales. well, in less than an hour from now, presumptive democratic presidential nominee hillary clinton is scheduled to formally spruce her running mate -- introduce her running mate, tim kaine. >> that will take place in the battleground state of florida. we examine what kaine brings to the ticket. >> reporter: his name and face may not be known nationally but well regarded in virginia. in 2013 he was sworn into congress as virginia's senator serving on the armed forces and foreign relations committee and that comes after a long career of election victories from virginia, as mayor of richmond, as lieutenant governor and in 2008 as governor of the battleground state. that same year he was an early backer of the obama presidential campaign n this election he was an early supporter of hillary rodham clinton. >> give it up for the dreamers. >> reporter: during recent campaign stops with clinton he has reached out to connect with latino voters, he is fluent in spanish which he learned as a catholic missionary. >> excellent, excellent. >> she could have made other choices that would have been more risky, more controversial and i think she went with the safe choice. >> reporter: a safe choice, says political analyst brian soble but one that may fail to draw in bernie sanders supporters, and others who have rebelled against the democratic establishment. >> she is missing center left because of the rift between the clinton people and sanders people. >> reporter: crain is 58, 10 years younger than clinton, born in st. paul, minnesota and raised in kansas, a graduate of harvard law school where he met his wife. he's a catholic against abortion and wants to promote adoption and abstinence education but politically allowing women to choose for themselves. on twitter friday evening clinton said i'm thrilled to announce my running mate, tim kaine, a man who has devoted his life to fighting for others and almost immediately a political ad rolled out showing the nation the democratic ticket for 2016. >> tough times don't last but tough people do last. we have been through tough times as a nation, but we are tough people. >> reporter: janine de jana casiama, channel 2 news. we caught up with two bay area delegates before they left. tiffany woods packed up political campaign buttons to trade in philadelphia. she is a community activist and a clinton supporter. woods is also transgender. for the first time there are two transgender members of the democratic -- rocky fernandez is the other delegate. he works for state senator bob laskowski and supports bernie sanders. >> all the history making and we are going to keep that history all the way to the white house with hillary. >> i'm hoping we are going to come out of the convention much more unified and a positive vision for people to be able to solve their challenges. >> clinton delegates have been reaching out to sanders supporters. they say the real work is going to come after the convention as they work to get out the vote for november. ktvu's ross palombo is going to be in philadelphia. he will report live from the convention next week and also extended coverage at ktvu.com. and stay tuned because we are going to talk to san francisco professor joe tuman about the presidential picks and both the democratic and republican positions and then at 10:00 we will go to miami as healthcare formally introduces tim kaine as her vice presidential pick. republican presidential nominee donald trump is taking the weekend off in new york. while the democratic convention kicks off monday, trump hopes to steal thunder by campaigning that day in north carolina. >> nobody is going to watch this next convention coming. who is going to -- i'm going to have a hard time watching her final speech. number 1, i know her too well. number 2, boring, boring. huge warmup coming our way. temperatures are going to hit the century mark for our inland cities, right now still pretty -- feels pretty good out here, in fact, we have got nice conditions out at jack london square but by the afternoon and i think these temperatures are going to soar quite fast, by noontime it's going to be warm and this is what we are looking at for the hottest part of the day. low 70s from the coast, san francisco, you get around the bay, 70s and 80s expected and then you go inland and take a look at some of these numbers, low 90s to low 100s, going to be hot from the north bay we are looking at 90s, you get into the inner east bay this is where we have some of the hotter locations going 100 degrees, a little above in some areas, around concord, livermore, antioch, brentwood you're going to be baking. into the south bay a warm one as well. extended forecast, temperatures will be similar tomorrow, could come down just a tad. i don't think it's going to be so much that we really feel it. on monday it looks to be just a tad cooler, maybe a little bit of relief for our inland cities but then we jump right back up so all in all in the extended forecast -- >> i'm honoring the lives of people who have battled cancer and coming up in 25 minutes we will talk more about that 24 hour relay event today and what it means for cancer survivors and those who have lost the most expensive surge in aviation history may soon be coming to an end. the three countries scouring the indian ocean for the wreckage of malaysia air flight 370 may suspend that search if no fresh leads emerge by the end of this year. it disappeared in march of 2014. 239 people were on board. the cost of searching for the missing jet recently climbed above the $130 million mark. dozens of low income families in the south bay are facing an uncertain future as a fire damaged a building. many are staying in the red cross shelter until the building that can be -- until the building can be repaired but that is taking longer than expected. >> reporter: from the outside you can hardly tell there was a fire but inside the vintage tower apartments in san jose the water damage is extensive. and while the 60 low income residents here were originally told they would be displaced for a week, it now looks like they will be out much longer. 25 of them are sleeping each night in a middle school gym converted by the red cross into a shelter. >> it's about to break my whole family. >> reporter: he is frustrated. his money and his patience are about to run out. >> the worst thing about the whole situation is we haven't talked to no upper management and nobody told us nothing. >> reporter: representatives with the standard property company say they have few answers to offer. they are hoping an abatement company will start work as soon as tomorrow tearing walls down to the studs to deal with the moisture. they say they simply don't know how long the restoration will take. it could be days, it could be weeks. >> part of the challenge is just making everybody feel comfortable, it's obviously not a home. >> reporter: and so the red cross along with the city of san jose are doing the best they can and other agencies have stepped in too. the santa clara county sheriff's department offered to do residents' laundry over at the jail. they also took up a collection raising $500 to get them some snacks and dvds from costco. >> they don't have a home. they are living out of a gym, unfortunately. they don't know when they are going to be getting back in their home. giving them clean clothes makes a huge difference, giving them comfort food makes a big difference also. >> reporter: the concern, what happens next. the city, red cross and building owners say they are working on an action plan, since it's possible residents will have to be out of the gym before they can get back in the building. this resident asked that we not show his face. >> we are all starting to anticipate this is getting worse before it gets better. >> reporter: the red cross only got permission to use this gym as a shelter through next friday. now they are hoping to extend that. in san man who was under psychiatric care for depression. investigators believe he acted alone. hundreds of people gathered at the corner store missionary baptist church in san francisco's bayview district last night. they came to remember mario woods on what would have been his 27th birthday. woods was carrying a knife when he was shot more than 20 times by san francisco police last december sparking a use of force controversy. weeks later san francisco supervisor formally declared woods birthday a day of remembrance. woods mother was among those attending last night's memorial. >> you know when you're alone at night and you realize i would just love to talk to him one more time. i would love for him to say mom, i would love to say what are we going to do today? where are we going to eat? that would be what i would want. >> some bay area police and firefighters had a much different response to mario woods day. they took out a full page ad in the chronicle paying tribute to police and firefighters killed in the line of duty. recent police shootings and violence targeting law enforcement have weighed heavily on police officers. >> those recent high profile incidents highlight the need to recruit the best possible prospects. fox 2's paul chambers reports from san francisco on the latest efforts to higher officers who really represent the community. >> reporter: the job of a police officer is becoming increasingly difficult. in finding qualified candidates -- and finding qualified candidates is also a growing problem. this after police were targeted in fatal shootings in dallas and louisiana and crimp over re- - criticism over recent police shootings. >> our goal is to get people who want to come into this job and have a passion for their community. >> reporter: that's the job of san francisco police lieutenant troy dangerfield in his recruiting department. for the last 25 years he served the people of san francisco, now it's up to him to find the right men and women to police the community, he job he doesn't take lightly. >> when you only have one group of people that's mostly represented in the police department, that doesn't give us equal playing field to understanding the communities of san francisco. >> reporter: 83% of san francisco police department officers are men, 49% of those on the force are white with 21% asian and nearly 16% latino. that's why sfpd is making a major push to change the face of policing in the city. billboards and magazines are highlighting the department's more diversity, showing more women and people of color. >> specifically go out to the hispanic student unions, the black student unions and all that feel that they are underrepresented within the police department. >> reporter: looking over the numerous recruiting classes throughout the years, you can see how diversity gradually became more important, but the force still has a long way to go to reflect the people of san francisco, especially in a time where some people are openly showing their lack of confidence in police. >> i think now people need to understand it's time to be a part to help make that change because we are in a great transition nationwide. >> reporter: paul chambers, ktvu fox 2 news. it has now been one year since the deadly shooting of hayward police sergeant scott langer. friday they left flowers at the police headquarters to mark the sad anniversary. the make shift memorial also honored the three law enforcement officers killed in baton rouge. sergeant langer was a 15-year veteran of the hayward police force and the father of two daughters. he was shot to death during a traffic stop. this morning southwest airlines is working to get its flights back on schedule. the airline has been struggling to overcome a technical glitch which virtually shut down nationwide operations earlier this week. nearly 2000 flights have been cancelled over the past three days leading to long lines at airports across the nation and right here in the bay area. anyone who has a southwest flight day is being encouraged to contact the airline before heading out to the airport. the contra costa county sheriff's department is asking for the public's help after a series of theft. one house izeed three -- one house burglarized three times in three days. several bronze statutes happened at this home. police were called back to that same location twice the next day. the stolen statues include an 8- foot bronze mark anthony statue and a 8-foot cleopatra statue. there was a 9995 dodge truck. someone is posting wanted signs across the city of san francisco. ktvu's cristina rendon tells us the signs are designed to shame airbnb hosts while accusing them of changing the face of china town. >> reporter: among the iconic lanterns and architecture in san francisco's china town, these posters are also popping up as part of the landscape. >> it certainly caught my eye being like a wanted poster in a post office. >> reporter: patrick connors took a picture of the poster in the financial district on his way to work wednesday. it's since been ripped down. >> i was surprised, you know, china town mentioned in this flier, which isn't a neighborhood i have heard discussed in terms of gentrification, so it almost seemed like a new front. >> reporter: the poster names a dozen individuals saying these 12 airbnb hosts are responsible for destroying affordable housing. it claims the airbnb listings are gentra fiing china town. >> saw one on the front door of our building that our office is at. >> reporter: she says their organization works with low income immigrant community workers and tenants who live in sros. she says the fabric of china town is changing. new residents are driving up rents and driving out older generations. >> if we cannot preserve affordable housing for the most needy immigrant communities in the city, then it changes who we are. >> reporter: the supervisor aaron peskin released a statement about the posters that in part reads it expresses -- community on being exploited by speculators. an increasing amount of short- term rentals throughout our city and in china town. last month supervisor approved tougher regulations for sites like airbnb. support that action but don't agree with the wanted signs. >> the posters were pretty extreme and we do not necessarily agree with pointing out individual players because we believe that it is actually the corporations and the companies like airbnb who actually have a role in participating in the solution. >> reporter: reporting in san francisco, cristina rendon, ktvu fox 2 news. reports show that job growth in california is the highest in the country. new numbers show the state added more than 40,000 new jobs just last month. but the unemployment rate ticked up from 5.2% to 5.4% as more people enter the job market. sectors with the strongest growth include hospitality, construction and professional services. and here in the bay area eight of our nine counties had unemployment rates lower than the statewide average. only solano county was higher at 5.9%. san mateo county has the bay area's lowest unemployment rate at 3.3%. san francisco and marin counties both came in at 3.5%. governor brown has once again denied parole to leslie leslie van houten, she was a follower of charles mansion and convicted -- manson and convicted of murder. a parole board recommended in april she be freed. yesterday brown said he still believes she could pose a risk to society. van houten is now 66 years old. she was the youngest follower of manson. she took part in the killings of leno and rosemary la bianca but did not take part in the deaths of sharon tate and four others. alerting the public about a recent shark sighting about 80 yards offshore. the shark was seen thursday near lindamar beach. it was described as being about 6 feet long and probably a juvenile. we talked with several surfers who shrugged their shoulders saying the sightings won't stop them from going into the water. this is the second time a shark has been spotted at the beach in the past 30 days. a ranger told ktvu smaller fish are migrating right now and the sharks are just following the food. the bay area will be represented at next week's democratic convention. >> it's on. i'm ready. i'm excited. we have 200 people will take part in the american cancer society's sixth annual millbrae relay for life. the 24 hour relay starts at 10:00 this morning at millbrae's central park. participants will walk or [ laughter ] >> reporter: but make no mistake, she takes her job very seriously. >> how is everything going here? >> good. >> yeah? are you happy you made the jump? how is your neck feeling? >> reporter: it was a first when you became chief, wasn't it? >> first female chief in hayward and my ninth-year coming up this year so big benchmark. >> reporter: big anniversary, you just got married and you're going to cross fit games? >> yes. >> reporter: when it comes to cross fit it is tough to know where to begin. we should probably mention the chief is an accomplished athlete. >> i went to cal state hayward which is now cal state east bay and i threw the discus and was an ncaa two champion two times and competed in the olympic trials in 2004. >> reporter: a few years ago fellow officers introduced her to a fitness regimen called cross fit. >> i decided maybe i'll do this three days a week and one of my captains, his cousin owned a gym in union city, a cross fit gym. >> reporter: turns out she is good, really good at it. >> we worked out together and like i said, i couldn't keep up with her. so it was humbling. she is fit. she has got to be the most fit police chief i have ever met. >> reporter: at 52, she is considered one of the fittest people in the world. >> she has a knack for it. it truly is a gift. >> reporter: every year hundreds of thousands of people are put to the test in a series of workouts. the fittest in every age group compete in the cross fit games at the stub hub center in july. in 2014 she barely missed going. >> in 2015 i finished ninth in the open, i finished ninth in the masters qualify and so i -- qualifier and i went to the reebok cross fit games in august and seeded ninth. >> reporter: she went with high hopes but never finished. >> i had a great time the first day and on the second day i got dressed in my competition clothes and ate my breakfast and turned my phone on, walking out the door and i knew something was wrong because literally my phone was levitating. i had hundreds of text messages and about 15 voice messages and nobody would say what had happened. >> reporter: no one wanted to tell her that three hours earlier veteran police sergeant scott lunger had been shot and killed during a traffic stop. the games went on, the chief went home. >> i went home by about 12:30, 1:00 that afternoon. it's been a tough year for the police department and, you know, really there wasn't a moment to grieve. it was all about getting my police family through a funeral for, you know, a real warrior and a real hero and i think back, because, i'm asking myself why would this happen? >> reporter: 11 months later she is going back to the games. >> it's not just about working out. >> reporter: it's not just about you, even though it was a personal goal? >> no, it's much bigger than me. >> reporter: and she says sergeant lunger and his family are very much a part of her journey. >> i really do compete with scott lunger in my heart and his daughters on my mind to be able to compete, to be able to be in pain, to be able to put myself in that dark place. when i start to feel sorry for myself, i think about scott because he never gets to feel anything again and so this year i am so determined to finish what i started last year. >> and she did just that. check out that picture. there she is on the right side of your screen, yes, she did earn herself a spot on the podium. so congrats to her. we are going to talk live with the chief in the 9:00 hour of mornings on 2. >> wow, that's awesome. >> looking forward to that. we got a fresh look at the progress being made at santa clara valley medical center in san jose. you might remember the county fired, then rehired turner construction which is now completing the $380 million project. the county says the hospital is on track to be the first in the nation to be certified gold for energy use. inside the hospital will have 168 patient rooms as well as a state-of-the-art rehab center. the expanded hospital is expected to open in late fall of next year. coming up in our next hour, a deadly terrorist attack in the afghan capital of kabul today. >> the group taking responsibility for the bombing and who the militants were targeting. plus, a funeral today for one of three officers killed in baton rouge, louisiana. the show of support from across the country for these men killed in the line of duty. the tickets for the democrat pick and republican parties are set. about an hour from now, hillary clinton is going to formally produce troost her running mate, former virginia governor and u.s. senator tim kaine. >> we're learning more information about the man suspect offered killing nine people in a shooting rampage in germany. who he is, and what has been ruled out so far as the reason for are that attack. we're getting a quick look at the weather outside, rhythm rosemary. at a jack london square. >> boy. >> where did you end up? a attack that we're getting into our newsroom. the afghan interior minute industry just announced moments ago that the casualty toll is now at 80 with 231 people wounded. isis had already claimed responsibility for bombing that demonstration. an ethnic group was demanding that a regional electric power line be routed through their pro fence. the human rights group amnesty international said the bombing shows the utter disregard they have for human life. >> police in munich are searching for a might never a mass shooting a at shopping mall. investigators say the gunman killed 9 people before turning the gun on himself. early this morning, police said they identified the killer as an 18-year-old munich man under care for psychiatric depression. they said he acted alone, and there's no evidence he had any ties to isis. a state of emergency was prompted across munich yesterday. the mass transit system was shut down, as well as the city's busiest roadways. they responded to earlier reports that several shooters were responsible, but it now appear that the suspect was the only shooter. >> reporter: i heard several shots, four or five, and screamed. went out on to the balcony, and saw that somebody was running around with a handgun and shouting, and then i heard people screaming. >> police revealing new details this morning, including that many even those who were killed were teenagers. 16 people were wounded in the gunfire. three of those still listed in critical condition. >> six new gun control bills have been signed into law. the governor signed the laws yesterday. among the tighter restrictions is a law requiring anyone making a home-made gun to apply for a serial number and to submit to a background check. the governor's office said it hopes the measure is going to track down on untraceable guns, which are also known as ghost guns. other laws require requirements that people turn in high capacity magazines and submit to background checks for ammunition sales. >> in baton rouge louisiana today, the second of the officers killed last week will be put to death. he leaves behind a wife and four children. he would often 0 text his wife while on patrol. an hour before the shoot, he texted good morning, my love, i love you. a funeral was held yesterday for another officer. well, the stage is set for the next big event in the race for the white house. the democratic convention begins in just 48 hours. >> it's kind of a contained excitement. >> it's on, i'm ready. we have work to do. >> reporter: one of the first two transgenders to be part of a california delegation attending a democratic national convention. a community acttivist and long- time clinton supporter said clinton will become the first presidential nominee, and also a first for the lgbt community. >> all of this is history make, and we're going to keep that history all the way to the white house with hillary. >> reporter: rocky hernandez also heading to philadelphia, but he's a delegate for bernie sanders. he works in politics this will be his second convention as a delegate. >> we have a much more positive convention. think it was scary what we saw last night with donald trump, and it was several dioscese just rile ager and division. >> reporter: -- several days of real ager and division. i'm hoping that we're going to come out of the convention much more unified around a positive position for people to solve their challenges. >> reporter: as for woods, she describes the democratic party as one that is nighted. >> we're building bridges, not a wall. speeches from first lady michelle obama and senator bernie sanders. tuesday's speakers include former president billing clinton and a group of black women who lost children in clashes with police or north of los angeles. it grew overnight from 3300 acres now to 5500 acres. containment is still at zero percent. temperatures are forecast to hit 110 degrees today. wind gusts could reach 40 miles an hour. about a hundred people had to 0 spend the night overnight at a high school, which had been turned into an emergency relief schedule. >> a fast moving grass fire was stopped before it burned home. the fire burned 57 acres and came close to dozens of homes. there were mandatory evacuations for about 50 homes, and voluntary evacuations for about 200 others. >> i didn't take anything, because i thought our lives were more important. >> firefighters said there was no strong wind, or the damage could have been much, much worse. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. one firefighters did suffer from heat exhaustion. a new tact nick the fight for more affordable houses in san francisco. >> it certainly caught my eye, being like a wanted poster in a post office. >> >> and kevin mccarthy gives us his reviews. >> hey, everybody. here to geek out with you about this week's new releases, including a new star trek film and a new horror movie called lights out. star trek beyond. the 2009 film it was a masterpiece. this film improves on that see quell. the opening scene, when that action scene is happening, turns down the action, that scene is amazing. one of the most perfect sequences i've seen to open up a movie. this film now, star trek beyond, deals with the u.s. bank stadium enterprise view -- uss enterprise crew. this film really balances out great action, great come by due, great casting. i love that. mr. kirk, obviously played by the amazing chris pine. he's fantastic in the film. and also features the first gay character ever in the star trek universe. sulu was recently revealed to be be gay if the movie. i think the movie really works on all levels. there's an emotional cord that works. i love the score on this film. the action really works. i saw it in imax2d, but i recommend just seeing it in regular format, and save yourself that extra cost. this is definitely a solid movie. i give it a four out of five. next to lights out. a pg-13 horror film. this started on a short film on youtube a couple of years back, and the director made his feature film debut. this film had some legit scares. i saw it with a large crowd, and it was fun. this is one of the best scenes in the film. an entity has tamped effort to a family, and she is trying to save her mom, because she has this entyty attached to her. it has some script issues, but overall hit this mark in the scare zone. when the lights are on, this entity can't attack, but when it is off, it is very, very senior scary. i gave the film a 3 and a half out of 5. it has some exercising at club sports san ramon. >> i was debating whether or not i warranted to do the elliptical. i was a little tired. and i felt i'll just push through it. i always feel better after that. and actually that's the last thing i remember for days. >> reporter: that's because ryan suddenly went into cardiac arrest. his heart stopped. he stopped breathing, but first responders and citizens came surprise reunion for ryan, his family, and rescuers, so he could meet them in person. >> i was holding him up by his chest so he wouldn't collapse. >> he wasn't breathing and didn't have a pulse and so i said we have to get him on the ground so i can start cpr. >> reporter: a staff member rushed over with this defibrillator to restart his heart. police and firefighters were summoned with the help of an off-duty officer working at the gym. the calls were routed directly to the new 911 cent wish instead of through the sheriff's office. officer sophia was among those who responded. she helped save the life of a second man who had a heart attack playing tennis. >> always good to have an -- to have a good outcome. >> ryan is the first man i ever loved. to almost lose him makes you stand back across the bay, and nearing 100 degrees for some of our areas in the north bay. i'll have the afternoon highs for you. we are counting down the official announcement from hillary clinton. she let her v.p. pick be known yesterday through a tweet to her supporters. here is what we know about senator tim kaine. a former are mayor and governor. he's never lost an election. political governors say he's an attractive candidate to the latino community, and is fluent in spanish. this might be one reason this announcement will be made in miami about 30 minutes from now. we're joined this morning by professor joe. thanks for coming in. let's get to this announcement. what do you think about kaine? >> this is the worst kept secret. early on in this week, we all predicted this would be the case. we worry about the possibility of discussion, so you want someone who could be president. and having that executive experience, being a governor, it's a different skill set. he was not only a governor in virginia, he was also lieutenant governor, which means he's played the number 2 roll before. >> which is important. what do you think he brings toty ticket that clinton wasn't doing on her own. it seems like pence kind of does something for trump. what does kaine do for clinton? >> well, he's a first-term senator, but did get on some important committees. this is part of the reason that barack obama was considering him in 2008, but didn't pick him. he didn't have the foreign policy experience back then. he does now. and that experience has also given him some responsibilities in the senate. one of the things he did was push for independent legislation authorization to give the united states additional reason to use military force against isis, for example. the obama administration said, well, there's actually 9-11 legislation which gives us that right, but he gave them additional recommendations. >> down sides? >> if you're think about hillary clinton, not about the skim set for being vice president, but politically, what can you do for me? one of it is that he'll fit into trump's narratives. trump will talk about the failure of our trade policies with other countries, and how that has led to offshoring of our manufacturing jobs that has cost blue collar jobs in this country. bernie sanders is very critical of those trade patterns, and one of the things if you're hillary clinton that you want to do is try to grab as many of those sanders supporters, as possible, feel the person, right? >> they were trying to -- feel the bern, right? >> they were trying to talk about building bridges. and come monday, what should we expect from them, and do you tink they've built the momentum they wanted to build going into the convention? >> well, to an a extent. think you would hope that kaine would whip up a lot of enthusiasm for people, and his back story is a good story, but he's a safe choice in many ways, and frankly, mrs. clinton at this point, as well, has not been yelling and chest bumping. it won't be the kind of speeches, for example, that you heard even from mr. trump the other night. she believes that most voters are right in the middle on things. that's another thing about kaine, by the way, he's a centrist, essentially, and frankly, hillary clinton is as well, based on the issues you're talking about. she believes most voters at the end of the day will provide someone who is moderated, not to one extreme or authority, but down the middle, and taking a thoughtful approach, and i suspect the convention this week will reflect that tenor, as well. >> yeah, a solid and steady we've got this? >> yeah, the republican convention was like the trump campaign. it was chaotic, but also great theater. you watched every night to see what was going to happen. the democratic convention i think will probably be a little more dull, but that's the whole point. >> more like comfortable food? >> safe is good in this way. >> so do you think the republican national convention accomplished what they were hoping it would accomplish? they didn't get a hundred percent solidarity. didn't get ted cruz on board or what they wanted, but do you think in terms of gets a message out in trump's speech, what grade would you give the rnc. >> well, for the convention, it was speck tackle and theater. i haven't looked at the weekend numbers to know what their ratings were. i would be interested to know how many watched all of trump's speech. it was the longest ever for a presidential candidate. his speech and was like watching a wrestling match where the wrestles do the chest thumping before or after, bold predictions without explaining how you're going to do something. but it was also theatricle. he had some good arguments that will appeal to some voters, for example the jobs being moved offshore and promising to bring them back. but he's short on details. >> do you think up to this point, though, he hasn't ever really given a lot he of details as he has gone through, and he's still been able to garner are support, he's still been able to get the nomination. do you think post convention, though, that voters will start saying, hey, i want to see some specifics? >> well, the presidential election cycle today is much longer than it used to be. it's several years. and we had debates earlier on. so a larger number of people are more engaged than they were before. but most americans will engage from the beginning of september to november. so we're not even to the point where a lot of people will be be paying attention yet, and it will be an enormous amount of media focus at that point, fact checking, and scrutiny about can you really deliver on these things, and responses from people in congress saying i'm not going to support that, maybe i'll support that. you can't go all the way to november by just promising to do something without printing white papers and details. so if he has those details, he'll need to talk about them. i have to say, though, in closing on him real quickly, on trump, it's been unwise to underestimate him. he beat a field of a lot of seasoned competitors,, and he was a good street fighter, whether he brings that kinds of chops and smarts into this campaign where it's now just two people at this point, apologies to the other candidates who might run, it's really hillary and donald at this point, the point is can he stop being the republican candidate at this point, and be presidential and act like someone who could represent anyone. a lot of people still feel alienated by his rhetoric. >> as we're here hill's speech on introducing kaine. how important is bernie sanders to this convention? >> well, he's efor muslim important, be because any baddance he give -- he's very important, one out of four registered voters, 25% of the electorate, they got excited about bernie. i teach those people at san francisco state. one student was for clinton in my class, everyone else was a sanders supporter. and it was because they didn't like hillary clinton. she has a deficit to make up with young people. bernie sanders is very important in this convention for specifically that baptist church in san francisco's bay view strict. they came to remember mario woods on what would have been his 87th birthday. he was carried a knife when he was shot more than 20 times by san francisco police officers last december, sparking a use of force controversy. week's later, be san francisco's supervisors formally declared woods' birthday a day of remembrance. his mother was among finding qualified candidates is also a growing problem. this after police were targeted in fatal shootings in dallas, louisiana, and criticism over recent police shootings. >> there are good police officers, there are bad police officers. our goal is people who want to come into this job have a passion for their community. >> reporter: that's the job of san francisco police lieutenant troy dangerfield and his recruiting department. for the last 25 years when has served the people of san francisco. now it's up to him to find the right men and women to police the community. an job he doesn't take lightly. >> when you only have one group of people that's mostly represented in the police department, that doesn't give us an equal playing field to understanding the communities of san francisco. >> reporter: 83% of the officers men. 49% of those on the force are white. 21% asian, and nearly 16% latino. that's why the san francisco police department is changing the face of policing in the city. >> specifically go out to the hispanic student unions, the black student unions, and all of those who feel that they're underrepresented within the police department. >> reporter: looking at the numerous recruiting classes throughout the years, you can see how diversity gradually became more important, but the force still has a long way to go to reanesthetic the people of san francisco, especially in a time when some people are openly showing their lack of confidence in police. >> i think now people need to understand it's time to be a part 0 help make that change, because we are in a big transition nationwide. >> well, the contra costa county sheriff's office is asking for the public's help after a series of thefts. one house was burglarized three times in just two days, and several bronze fa statues were stolen. the first happened on july 15th, and then police were called back to that same home twice the next day. you're see something pictures of the stolen statues that include an 8 foot bronze mark anthony statue and an 8-foot cleopatra statue. they are looking for a dodge truck they believe was used in all three thefts. >> spreading kind deeds not that's right. we teach everything from bike mechanic courses to welding classes. the fact they we have an art studio space and kids in the bidding web combine the two properties, and are able to make some amazing creations. the kids are able to design, learn how to weld, and build these bikes in a matter of about 30 hours, which is amazing. >> reporter: do they put it on paper first, and then start to figure out how it's going to work? >> a lot of it is is the process of creating. it's laying out, starting with an idea, laying it out on paper, and then going through, you know, the instruction of learning all of the techniques to be able to actually factory indicate a bicycle, which is a lot to learn in a short period of time for an adult, so that a young person could do this is very impressive. >> you said this was actually created by somebody who said i go to the grocery store for my mom a lot, and i'm tired of walking home with all of the bags. >> correct. we encourage kids to think about a bike not just as something that somebody would use daily, but to think about it in a crete eightive and personal way. what is the bike going to do for you? and for this, this kid, you know, is tired of carrying groceries on a bike. it's not the easiest thing to do. and so he warned to build a bicycle he can carry groceries with, and this is a good design and a good example of giving the kids an opportunity to be creative, and letting them have the freedom toes more that. >> reporter: so they get to create something cool, and then get to take it home when they're done. >> and in terms of taking it home to ride around with your friends in the neighborhood, you get to be the superstar of your community. so it's amazing. >> i want to point you behind us may ill, who said there will be some bikes that folks will be able to come and ride, but on the back side, these are bikes that will also be able to -- you'll also be able to get on and take for a spin. it's going to be a lot of turn going on out here. there's going to be a bike parade for the kids. there are going to be contests out here. if you can fix a flat in 30 seconds or less, there's going to be a battle ground of virginia. he was sworn into congress back in 2013, served on the armed forces committees. he's 58, graduated from harvard law, married with three children. >> here is more information about the democratic nominee for vice president. he has been a favorite of barack obama since 2008, and was on president obama's short list for v.p. according to clinton. kaine has never lost an election in his political career. and before becoming a politician, he was an attorney who specialized in civil rights and fair housing issues. his wife, ann holton, is the virginia secretary of has to say. do we expect any real surprises? thanks for joining us on site, i should say. >> i think it will be a basic introduction. it's possible he'll say some words in spanish. it's noteworthy, of course, she picked florida to do this. florida is a battleground state, a swing state. there's a large cuban population, but there are other people who are hispanic or latino living in florida, as well. and it's an important state for a democrat to be able to win, because the road to the white house usually goes from the south to the southeast, and florida is a key state. so being able to pitch to latino and hispanic voters is important. many in the community there are are a little conner is vat isive on lots of issues, and might be drawn otherwise to mr. trump's rhetoric. >> we saw that last week with dominic reaching out to latino community in his acceptance speech. so really it proving to be a key demographic that both sides need to win to win this election. >> very much so. we were talking about these voters, and someone referred to them as a minority, and i said, you know, they're actually not a minority anymore, if we're count big the numbers. certainly in terms of political power, it's marginalized, but there are a lot of them, and if they vote, they will -- in the state of california, they will be the majority voting bloc in everybody bothers to vote, and certainly nationally, they're more important. this is the tricky road that dominic goes, because either time he or the republican party talk about immigration, people who are hispanic or latino view that as code for bashing spanish speaking people. you never hear them talking about canadian speaking, or from the north. the wall is always down there. and the irony is that many of these people, like the v.p. mom my, are practicing catholics, whose views on abortion, or, like, marriage equality, or other things, are probably more in line with republicans, but they stop supporting republicans the moment they start talking about immigration. >> the work still needs to be done, so he can maybe hit latino voters and hit in the battle ground state of miami. bernie supporters are not so quick to say we can get behind him. they are still needing to be convinced that if they are sanders supporters, and, as you said, your students are sanders because they don't like hillary clinton, does kaine -- >> they were drawn to sanders for other reasons. a lot of college age students liked him talking about student tuition. and that probably won't happen in their lifetimes, but -- >> so will kaine be able to say to them, you don't have bernie, but you have me, you have hillary? >> theoretically, but as i said, kaine supported trade legislation that impacted jobs in this country that sanders opposed, and to the extents that sanders is openly critical of his position, this might reflect back on this. the v.p. is an important position about this, but most voters, i've never seen where voters voted for or are against somebody because of their returning mate with the possible exception of john mccain picking sarah palin. once she gave an interview, everybody said what was he thinking? but in the end, he was going to lose that election anyway. >> this has been such an inconventionling year in terms of candidates, in terms of what some would say dominic's improbable rise as a mom knee. hillary clinton was initially the odds on favorite, but had problems west bernie sanders, now seems like they are picking conventional picks as a running made. what does that mean? >> well, it means that both candidates have come back to the middle, which you have to do in the general election. in primaries, you usually speak to your base. and trump, why doubt believes a lot of the positions he took in this, i've watched him for years, i know that he's not someone who advocates against abortion rights, and i believe that he is not bigoted towards gay and lesbian people, but her sort of allowed people to believe that about him, because that's what you have 20 too when you're trying to pitch and woo to people who aren't even sure if you're a rep an that that point. in the general election, you come back to the middle, because that's where mote voters are who will participate in the elections, ask you have to take moderated positions. >> could those earlier positions be a drag going towards november? i've seen some hillary clinton adds which basically allow dominic to speak for himself. and so if he's had this rhetoric he has used before about minority communities, building a wall, seems like there's an easy path for hillary clinton simply to run what dominic has -- >> she'll definitely do that. the only problem her, and i won't say this is the only problem, he has some challenges, is that her personal negatives with a lot of voters are still pretty high. she's part of a dynasty that's been around for a long time. i would have to say i think there is probably some gender biases if this, as well, people are harder on her, clinton, as a woman, in some ways. some of the criticism, to be honest, a little irrational, or not supported by the evidence, but people cling to those beliefs and don't like her. >> she has some work to do, as well. we should mention that we are standing by awaiting for hillary clinton to speak in florida, to formally announce her vice president because of tim kaine. we've been waiting for it to happen this morning. there you see the podium, and a wider shot of all of the forecasts there for this announcement. it was supposed to start at 9:00, as these things tend to do, they don't start exactly on time, but that is the place that we are keeping an eye on, as you can see, the podium is now empty. we assume someone else is going to come thrum to do another introduction, as that comes by. so it is one of those mornings that we're right smack in the middle of two conventions, the reimold just watched -- the rnc wraps up, the dnc heading our way. in terms of just i think -- i want to, really quickly -- the rnc had some surprises in what people would say. the dnc seems to be maybe more of is that the united front they want to say, look, we've got it together. we are the stronger, more, you know, steady ticket? >> i think so. the jargon that campaigns and conventions oftentimes traffic in start with the words message discipline. right? you stay on message, and discipline means you don't veer from that. that's something mr. trump is notorious at not doing, right? and it does mean that sometimes thinks look overly staged and scheduled, like watching an awards show that clicks, and all of the presenters are on and off, and you'll see that hair. what you is all with the rnc was more drama. bitter rivals giving speeches, not giving speech, and a wife who it was accused of plagessism, and there was a lot of drama to that. so it was good theater in a lot of ways. this will be a more normal convention for the democrats. democrats are going to be very careful to make sure that the audience of people surrounding shear lot more diverse than one you saw at the republican convention when it was noteworthy to see one or two our three african-americans are. >> and paul ryans tweet, that really -- >> yeah. and here it will -- you'll -- that will be the big difference. and the argument she wants to make, symbolically, is i speak for everybody, donald speaks for a very narrow slice of america. >> all right. we're going to keep an eye on this, keep you here, and then hit a an explosion did rock a large demonstration in the capital. this is the first footage of the attack we got into the newsroom this morning. the casualty toll is now actually at 800. 231 other -- at 800 -- at 80. 231 others have been hurt. the human rights group amnesty international said the bombing northern straights the utter disregard that they have for human life. police in munich searches for a motive at a shooting there at a shopping mall. the killed nine people before turning the gun on himself. earlier this morning, police announced they had found him to be a 18-year-old munich man who was under psychiatric care, and there was no indication he had ties to isis. police shut down the city's entire mass transit system, as well as the city's busiest roadways. it now appears that the suspect they have over 0ed as the shooter was the only shooter. >> i heard several shots, four or five, and screamed. went out on to the balcony, and saw that somebody was running around there in the parking level with a handgun and shouting. then i heard people screaming. >> police say many of those killed were teenagers. 16 people were wounded in the gunfire. three of those victims still listed in critical condition. >> here if the bay area, dozens of travelers looking to fly to munich yesterday had to adjust their plans. we found passengers on direct flights to munich from the san jose airport that had to switch their flight so they could flight into frank ford instead. we caught up with a couple vacationing in germany who said they can't believe that an attack happened so close to their home. >> we don't have attachment to terrorism. munich is dear to us. my father lives in munich. >> no one was changing their travel plans that we talked to yesterday. certainly we have seen that happen with other mass shootings. >> and we are on standby right now, waiting for hillary clinton to make her formal announcement for her v.p. pick. we will continue monitoring miami florida, order to have a parade, you need a did decorated bike. i have here with me the founders and those that run a bike team. this organization group has been around for about 10 years now. i have r.b. and baby champ with me. this goes way beyond decorating bikes. but first, let's talk about the program. r.b.? >> so, yeah, our program, basically we use the creativity by using duct tape and spray paint to make awesome bikes. >> reporter: so they come and decorate their bikes, but this isn't just an after-school program type of thing, this is to keep kids if schools. what do you need to do to be part of the team? >> you have to have at least a 2.5 gpa, joy to have your own -- you have to decorate your own bike, and you have to volunteer at the shed. the address is 6833 international boulevard, and we're accepting all volunteers and donations, as well. >> reporter: so they come to a shop, and here is an example of what they maybe do with their bike? >> yeah, this is alumn null foil tank on a customized bike. we put the foil on, duct tape, spray paint. whatever you need to make a beautiful bike, you know, decorating. >> reporter: so you guys will be out here before the parade starts, but you'll be out here to the entire day, as well. so the kids can come by even after the parade, decorate their bike. this is just one of several things that will be going on here today. there will be a bike parade, rodeo, a contest. there will be food, music, and everything bicycle. so come out and have is fun at jack london square. it will be a warm day today. let's start with the hot spot. who is walker walking all around the city of san francisco, over the golden gate bridge today, and walking to raise aware conditions and money for breast cancer. every three minutes someone in the united states is diagnosed with breast cancer. we have raised $4.4 million this weekend, which is really exciting, and we have 1900 walkers. >> that's amazing. i know the numbers when you talk about how much money you have been ordered to raise over the past years, but when you talk about, i think, the emotional kind of benefits that the people participating also get, you know, i've heard friends who have taken part in this, as well, and other participants, talking about what it means to stand with all of these people who have either survived it, know people who have survived it, or people who have lost the battle with breast cancer. what it does for them to be a part of this. >> absolutely. our walkers really run the gamut, from ages 16 to 73 this weekend. we have survivors here walking 222 breast cancer survivors. people who have lost someone to the disease, who have been touched by breast cancer. their family and friends. or just people who were out here because they just really want to make a a difference and do something challenging and powerful for themselves. but it's a huge community, inspirational. one of my favorite things about the walks are just the people you meet along the way, the stories you hear, the determination and power that everyone has all weekend long. >> and really that need for support services, i think, it can't be stated enough, about how important that is. because it's not just the cancer care, but it's all of the attendant costs that come with that that can just break a family, and the last thing you need to worry about is paying more bills. >> reporter: that's right. a lot of the money that we help fund, a lot of the organizations we help fund goes to people who don't have insurance, so we fund organizations to put food on the table for people who are under going chemotherapy,, we pay for mammograms for people who don't have insurance and otherwise couldn't get one. >> okay. two days, a 39-mile walk. i know seven cities participate, need to recruit the best possible prospects. paul chambers reports from san francisco on the latest efforts to hire officers who represent the community. >> reporter: ? there are good police officers and bad police officers. our goal is to get people that want to come into this job that have a passion for the community. >> reporter: that's the job of san francisco police lieutenant troy dangerfield and his recruiting department. for the last 25 you'res, he has served the people of san francisco. now its up to him to find the right men and women to police the community. a job he doesn't take lightly. >> when you only have one group of people that's mostly represented in the police department, that doesn't give us an equal playing field to understand the community of san francisco. >> reporter: 83% of san francisco police department officers are men. 49% of those on the force are white. with 29% asian, and 14% latino. that's why they are making a change to the face of law enforcement in this city. >> specifically go out to the hispanic student unions, the black student unions, and all of those who feel they are underrepresented in the police department. >> reporter: you can see how diversity gradually became more important. but the force still has a long way to go to reflect the people of san francisco, especially at a time when some people are showing their lack of confidence in police department. >> i think people need to understand it's time to be part of that change. >> this morning, southwest airlines is working to get its flights back on schedule. the airline has been struggling to overcome a technical glitch, which virtually shut down natural operations earlier this week. nearly 2,000 flights have been canceled over the last few days, leading to long lines across the bay area. >> and the contra cross too sheriff's department is asking for help after one house was burg are aized three times in just two days. the first theft happened on july 15th, but then police were called back to that same home twice the next day. the stolen statues include a bronze mark anthony statue. the sheriff's department said it is looking for a dodge 3500 truck that it believes was used in all the theft. >> governor brown has once again denied patrol to leslie van outen, a follower of karls man son who was convicted of murder and spent more than 40 years in prison. a patrol board recommended in april she be freed, but yesterday brown said she still believes she is a risk to society. warnings now up at passcify do leach, warning about a possible shark sighting offshore. the shark was described as being about six feet long, and probably a juvenile. we talked with several surfer was just some rugged it off. this is the second time a must have some really strong legs. >> no, i have a really great motor. this is an electric bike. >> interesting. so let's get into this bike. you said it costs about 6,000 dollars. my eyes pond, but she said that's a cheap car. >> when i first learned about electric bikes, and particularly electric cargo bikes, it seemed disengineious to me. i used to be a professional bike racer, and i thought a bike was for fitness, and you have to get sweaty. so the electric bike part at first, i thought somehow, it just, like i said, was disingenious, and then i realized this competes with my car. this to phenomenally well balanced and designed that i can carry anything. right now i have the two cases of beer, which i carried home with my kidding on the back, by the way, and i have 35-pounds of food. and i have room up front, and i have room for bags of groceries in front. and because the wrack is attached to the frame, you can put, like, 50 pounds on here, and it doesn't affect the way the bike handles. so usually if you have heavyweight on the handlebars, serve probably familiar with balancing to make a bike stable. this bike, even with all of this wait on it, you don't do that, and then you go up a hill, just a little bit slower. >> thank you so much for us. just one of the bikes out here. there are so many. there are bikes for folks to actually ride around in. we had two penny out after three kays of grueling physical work, the chief town herself third on the podium in ages 50 to 54. the joins us via skype. congratulations, chief. >> thank you, claudine. so great to see you. >> i was watching the games this week, as you know, and it was tough. was it as tough as you thought it would somebody three days of workout after workout after workout. >> it was hard. mostly it's very mentally fatiguing, but what an excellent honor, and, you know, this week was pretty epic, just in general, because it was the anniversary of the loss of scott lunger, and so for me, it really kept me on track, and it just made it a little bit easier this year. >> when we talked about you going, and for people familiar with the story, you twin last year to the cross fit games. day one, you excited. day two, sergeant lunger was shot and killed. you got a call in the morning when you woke up, essentially going out the door, and then took a flight home, and obviously tough days that followed and the year that followed. you told me when it gets hard, you thought of scott. how many times did you think of scott during this competition? i know you had his name on the shirts. but how often were you thinking of him? >> reporter: i thought of him nonstop, especially on the longest workout, which was the bum run. he had four rounds where he had to run up many flights of stairs, so it was a really long workout, and i had tried it in the gym, and had not made the time cap of 20 minutes, and i wall was saying his name out loud, especially on that fourth round. i wanted to quit so bad, and i kept thinking this is for you, scott, you don't even get to do this anymore. site really made it completely doable, and it was so amazing to be able to honor him this week. you know, you wonder why things happen. last year, it just seemed impossible to get through the next year, and what an incredible blessing this year, just i'm so grateful for all of the support. >> you placed third, and some people may not realize, i should say this, scott lunger did cross fit, as well, and there's actually a workout named in his honor after in the shooting. in terms for your hayward family and people rooting for you back here. i know that last year, you're newly married, you are a chief at hayward, have been for the last five years. you had a lot of people cheering you on. but it been growing you. said basically you just work out and sleep. hopefy you can do a little bit more now that this is done. >> yeah, that's kind of what it takes now to make it to the games. i apologize. i look like this because i actually just finished training. and i have is a bruise across my nose. i thought that made me look a little tougher, maybe. so, i don't know, i really would like to -- i would like to do this again. i really would. but this year was really epic to be able to come back and honor scott, and to be able to stand on the podium. i cannot tell you how it is -- it's so humbling. i mean, i've gotten to do some amazing things in my life, but to be able to compete and be in front of, you know, thousands and thousands of friends and fans, and to be able to honor the police department and law enforcement everyone, it's amazing. i walk around to the games, and so many police officers come up to me, and have been so supportive, and just so excited, and, it's just been a very are exciting week. >> you're not wearing your hardware right now? >> my hardware? no. are you talking about my gun, claudine? >> not your gun, your medal! (laughing) >> no, you know what, it's actually back at the hotel. that thing weighs about as much as a shot put. it is legit. it's probable bely about three pounds. it's huge. would be happy to have a cup of coffee and share it with you. >> well, you posted this picture which was really touching, of your medal, and the bracelet with scott lunger and his end of watch. so congratulations on your remarkable achievement, chief diane stewart, who is formally chief diane irvin. i know that when we did this story, you said you were determined to finish what you started, and you finished, and we congratulate you. >> thank you so, so much. and just warranted to give my community a big thank you for all of the support for our police department. we love you as much as you love us. thank you. >> well, try to relax, get some rest. well deserved. >> thanks claudine. >> good show, good show. >> we told you about a west sacramento girl who is hoping to change the world, message at a time. >> her message is spreading across the world, and for more on that, go to her -- our website, that's ktvu.com. we have links to share the story there, clip is a pretty great story. all right. now, as we said, we've been waiting all morning for presumptive democratic nominee hillary clinton to formally introduce her running mate, virginia senator tim kaine. >> right. that announcement expected to come out of the battleground of florida, now push back to the next hour. but we're joined by professor joe, to talk about her decision. once these campaigns come to an end, it's time for the ground game to begin. how do you think they're going to come out without seeing how the democrat tuesday, how do you think it's going to start, once they start getting that ground game going to turn out voters? >> the republicans, you mean. well, the road to the white house go toes to the south, i think, as we mentioned before, and a number of the battleground states there are. the biggest base that is the most important base for dominic are chris charges. you heard him announce him the other night. they're overwhelmingly support inof trump in the campaign, and that's a big part of the base. and so there will be people there, working if the battleground states to make sure those states stay on the republican side of the ledge person the work to be done, really, for trump, though, thinking about ground game, so to think of moving from those states to the rust built, and sort of to advance the argument he made in the speech about the trade negotiations we've done and the different agreements we've seen it having also been tied to manufacturing being moved offshore. a lot of union jobs were lost when that happened. labor traditionally democratic, but it's susceptible to persuasion from mr. trump in the same way that labor surprisingly went for people like ronald reagan back in 1980. usually democrats, but they liked his messaging. so ground game will move to that part of it, as well. remains to be be seen, though, whether the trump campaign under near management will have the ability to turn out the troops, walking, knocking on doors, making calls. on that front real quickly, if mrs. clinton is late to this, only one reason. probably because she's speaking to some really wealthy donors. >> we are told now maybe 10:00, so we'll follow that for you and cult in as our show wraps up. thanks for coming in. we have lots of politics still coming up with the democratic national convention. that is going to do it for us this morning. rosemary has been add pedal fest ail morning, and there she is. the majority of people wanted her on the big bike. good job, rosemary, looking great. have a great day, everyone. >> probably thinking how do i get down? >> yes. ♪ ♪ you live life your way. we can help you retire your way, too. financial guidance while you're mastering life. from chase. so you can. - [voiceover] on this episode of xploration outer space, it's our neighbor and potentially one of our next stops in the solar system, mars. but why go? how do we get there? and is there life on the red planet? and later, we reveal a desert that may hold the key to one day living on mars. - [woman] look at those beautiful mountains. i couldn't believe such a place existed. - [voiceover] the course is set, destination mars.
