sal is off. alex is in. speaking of a few extra days clearly. >> 15 wasn't enough. that's for you sal, if you're watching. i was at the gym and i couldn't get on a machine. it was packed. >> i'll confess, i haven't gotten there yet to the gym. >> but we will. >> i have to get to that resolution. >> the problem that i have found, during the holidays you're busy and it throws off your routine. >> the routine for the past month. it starts next week. >> also new session of congress. >> right. >> it started today. it will be a very interesting year. >> yep. >> in politics. we saw it this morning where the house republicans had a vote behind closed doors. then we saw president-elect donald trump questioning the move. my question is, what do you think the relationship is going to be like between trump and the house republicans? >> that dynamic is going to be one to keep an eye on, i think. >> yep. >> certainly throughout his presidency. obviously we know that a lot of republicans didn't have his back during the campaign. it's going to be interesting to see how much they accomplish. >> also kamala harris being sworn in today. the 45th senator of california. we will talk more politics in a bit. let's get you updated on the forecast right now and go over to steve paulson. >> thank you, guys. it looks like a break in the rain for right now. still on its way. plenty coming in tonight and tomorrow and also the wind will crank up here. but overall, about a quarter of an inch to over an inch for some on the rainfall. especially marin county and up in the santa cruz mountains. snow level is inching up a little bit. it was down to 1800 yesterday. i expect it to go 2500 to 3,000 later on. there's going to be a lot of rain in the next 24 to 48 hours and more so for the weekend. we will get a break on thursday and friday. look what happens on saturday. and then especially into sunday. there will be some heavy duty rain totals. in fact, there may be a lot of rain over the next 10 to 15 days or so. some of this is still snow. but not as much as yesterday when it was low snow levels for many up in mendocino county and lake county and the bay area hills. we are seeing a little break. the rain is starting to fill back in now. plenty to the event with. it will get enhanced over the next few images. santa cruz mountains, you can get good rain out of there. these temperatures are 10 degrees warmer for some than yesterday. low off of oregon funneling in. look at the moisture off to the west of us. the whiter the tops, the colder the top. that is the source of the wind. i think heavy rain tonight and tomorrow morning. you can see where the moisture is coming up from the west/southwest. there's a lot going on across the pacific that will play into awe wet pattern and a tremendous amount of snow. even though the snow level will go up. 15-day outlooks of 200 inches of snow up towards the sierra snow lab. a lot of rain. maybe too much rain. we will ease into this. i mean, it's looking very wet here for the next week or two. >> thank you, steve. >> snow as steve just reported bringing snow to the sierra and parts of the bay area. janine de la vega is live on mount hamilton where road conditions are tricky. aren't they? >> reporter: yes. there is a road closure on mount hamilton road. they don't want anyone coming up here. and so at least the public. that's because it is icy. there is snow. not too much of it. a lot of it is melting. i was able to make one snowball here. behind me you can see it is dusting of snow here. but it's really melted off all of the trees. the roofs of the houses here still have snow. there's some on the cars. last time though we checked in with you, in the last 30 minutes, we ran into a couple of snowboarders who brought their snowboards up here, thinking they can do that. let's go to that video. they're not supposed to be doing this. but, you know, it was pretty comical watching them try to do something like this. they are from morgan hill. they were just in tahoe. and they missed the snow and wanted to attempt this. the workers up here at lake observatory discouraged them and told them they couldn't be here and they ended up leaving. the snow started falling on mount hamilton on sunday and continued on to monday. a heavy dusting of snow. it all stopped this morning. there was rain o'er night. that has stopped. a lot of the snow right now is turning to slush. we did he can speak to the snowboarder on camera a little while ago. here is what he had to say. >> it is amazing. it is cool. i never chased the snow up here. i've heard of snow coming around with united states in a while. it is cool to see. i woke up at 6:00 in the morning to be out here. i'm glad i made it. >> reporter: now, here is a photo that one of our viewers sent us showing what it looked like in the parking lot yesterday off of summit road at castle rock park in los gatos. they got snow there. check out the snow coming down in middleton yesterday in lake county. you can see farm animals, pigs walking around in the snow. we had a viewer from kell industryville send in footage from-- kelseyville send in footage from yesterday. we have seen caltrans equipment here. they have been up and down the road. there is a plow right here. they're maintaining the roads up here. but they want to make sure that the public stays away from here. we are wearing a lot of layers here, my photographer and i because it's windy. at least the rain has stopped. >> janine de la vega bundled up atop snowy mount hal about making life difficult for donald trump. >> both parties are bracing for what could be a very difficult year. >> reporter: you can judge how consequential this congress may become based on the high profile visitors this week alone. president obama will be here on capitol hill tomorrow to meet with democrats to try to salvage obamacare. vice president-elect mike pence will also be here to meet with republicans. the gleaming dome of congress has been redone. after a massive construction and restoration project. but inside, it's all about deconstructing president obama's agenda. for newly elected refers, it is a -- republicans, it is game time. >> the number one target is obamacare. that's the reason that president obama will head to the hill tomorrow, to try to figure out a way to save the health care law. for republicans the challenge may be unifying around a plan that saves the more popular aspects of the program but getting rid of the individual mandate to obtain or buy insurance. >> republicans have had a lot of plans for a number of years now. but this time they have to pick one. and as a party unite behind it and pass it, that will take hard work. >> reporter: and democrats are going to mount aggressive plays as well. planning on making it as difficult as possible for president-elect trump to win confirmations for his cabinet picks. specifically targeting eight of them for long drag out battles that could continue for weeks beyond the inauguration. already raising the ire of trump's team. >> there's a difference between opposing people on policy and allowing people to have the constitutional -- the president to have the right to choose his cabinet as long as they're qualified. each one of these people is unbelievably qualified to serve and bring change to the various departments in the government. >> reporter: the other real fault line on capitol hill includes the ethics. republicans have voted to dismantle it. democrats are howling. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. >> this morning, president- elect donald trump criticized house republicans for focusing on the ethics issue as the first order of business. he tweeted this, with all that congress has to work on, do they really have to make weakening of the independent ethics watch dog as unfair as it is. maybe their number one act and priority. focus on tax reform, health care, and so many other things of far greater importance. the time is 9:10. happening in his role as the president of the senate, vice president joe den is swearing in new u.s. senators. this group includes kamala boxer. she will be the first new senator in 24 years. she is joining dianne feinstein in representing our state. with the republicans controlling congress and the white house, they should be able to get work done. but democrats are vowing o put up a fight. throughout mornings on 2 we have been asking what you would you like to see out of congress in the new year? is there something that you want to see changed or hoping that they can come together and get things done? one twitter user says making our government more transparent. make our government work for the people instead of getting paid morning to you. >> good morning. thanks so much for having me. >> no problem. i know you're a science buff. how fired up were you when you got word that you would host mythbusters the search. >> honestly a dream come true. mythbusters has been with me for over 50% of my life in terms of years. it actually did help sculpt my career path. when i was in high school determining what i wanted to do, going into college, mythbusters pushed me into engineering. from there, i realized that i too wanted to try to take complex scientific topics and explain them for people to get people interested in science in a full and digestible way. that's what i do for my day job. when i got the call from mythbusters saying do you want to be part of this new show, it was a perfect fit. >> with the ten doing experiments and building stuff. we have ph.d.s and engineers and other scientists. we have youtube stars who make things for the internet. we have these people with different backgrounds and genders and ethnicities. what we are really looking for is for those people to come into their own as mythbusters over the course of the show. that's why we're doing it in a competition format that is not gossipy or caddy or anything like that. nothing like voting off the island in negativity. we want to show fans of the old show that these people are passionate and mythbusters fans themselves. we want you at home to get to know them. by the end of the show, i think it might happen. >> kyle, why do you think it is important to have shows like mythbusters that makes science fun and make it so accessible to such a wide audience? why is that important? >> sure. for whatever reason every generation has a few shows that really make an impact. a few decades ago, something like that was if you're talking about science fiction, star trek. these are institutions that i think the data would prove pushed more young people into science technology, engineering art, and management paths than otherwise would. i think mythbusters did that in spades. and now that the original host hung up their mythbusting happens and pursuited other things, i think this legacy of being a great science show on television is something worth continuing. which is why we're doing it like this. and that's why i'm a part of it. because i think it is worth while to do, especially in this day and age where everything is information. it's about knowledge. it's about what you know and how you can apply it to be not only a good citizen, but just good human beings on this planet. knowing science, having a background in curiosity, being someone who is passion alternate about learning. that's what is most important. >> we know the old show had a lot of filming done right here in the bay area. does the depend on water from the reservoir. that is it. we will head back to you in the studio. >> thank you, tara. all right. it has been one month sense the devastating oakland warehouse fire that killed 36 [laughter] >> and i -- >> go on. >> i saw a tweet though that said that you directed tonight's episode. is this something that you want to think about in the future here? >> yes. i actually do. i really loved doing it. i have a lot to learn. but i picked up a few things doing the show for 12 years, watching other people direct. and, yeah, i really enjoyed doing t it is something that i asked to do years ago and then they got postponed and then i got pregnant. then i had a baby. then i got pregnant again. so i kind of put it on the side -- the back burner. and, you know, this is our final season. so i thought, you know, this is my last chance. i asked and it was scary to me. and i actually really loved directing. >> i loved a lot from david, my costar. yeah. it was really great. >> for bones to be able to go out on your terms must be sad but a little sweet because there were people, emily, who did not expect bones to make it 12 seasons. >> oh, i mean some people. i think everyone didn't expect it to make it. i remember, you know, never thinking it could make it past three years. just because i didn't know you could have so many story lines about bones. i mean, it seemed crazy to me. but here we are. now we have done 12 seasons. it has been an amazing ride. the network has given us an amazing gift of 12 episodes for our 12th final season to wrap up all of the story lines. many times shows will be canceled without a chance to finish any story lines. they're canceled and you can't do anything. it is a tragedy, especially for the fans. we have done, you know, our best to try and give the fans a satisfying ending to the series and to all of the story lines and the characters that they love. >> yeah. obviously the show is not judge university about the bones. it is about the people. talk to me about sort of the evolution of the relationship between brennan and booth. how do you describe sort of the arc of that relationship over the past 12 seasons? >> wow. we had, you know, from the beginning there was kind of the sexual tension. and like butting heads about things because they're very different characters. acters. and then, you know, now the characters are married with kids. and we still butt heads about things. but our characters have changed as a result of knowing each other and loving each other. he has helped my character break down all of these walls that i built up. and i certainly taught him a thing or two about science and, you know, weighing your thoughts with your gut. because, you know, he was kind of instinctive and just go with things without thinking about it as much. so i think we have changed each other. these characters have changed so much. our relationship has changed so much. you know, our lives off cameras have changed so much as well. >> that's true. >> it has -- that is one of the joys of doing a television series, especially a long- running television series, is to grow with the character and to change so much. with a film, you only have so much time to change with that character. and you can only explore so many things. with a series, you can do 230- whatever episodes we have done and explore so many situations and relationships and dynamics and characters changing. it's been a real treat. >> it has been very addictive. you sit down and don't think you're going to watch the whole thing. it has been a great run. congratulations on your success. good luck with the directing down the road. >> thank you. i appreciate it. >> that airs at 9:00 right here on ktvu. they are aimed at busy commuters needing a hearty breakfast on the go. >> i'm in. >> ktvu's christien kafton live now at the gastro pig on franklin street where the grand opening is being held. pork on the menu there?
