average for some. certainly this is not something we have seen much of the summer. back to the desk. bart police gave us an update on two recent attacks on passengers. police said this same man is suspected of committing both attacks. they also released surveillance videos of the suspect. the first attack was thursday at the base fare pot station in san leandro. a man punched and hit another man in the head with bolt cutters on the train and then ran out of the station. saturday the same man hit another man in the face near the embarcadero station in san francisco. alex savidge will have a live report coming up. a university professor from chicago linked to a murder who was on the run for a week is due to appear this morning in a courtroom after he turned himself in in the bay area over the weekend. allie rasmus has more on the strange details that have really come out in this cross- country murder investigation. >> reporter: some of the details include the man accused of the murder according to police made a video recording of himself apologizing for his mistake and they say he made a donation of $1000 in the victim's name at a library the day of the killing. the man is 42-year-old wyndham lathem of chicago. he was a microbiology professor at northwestern university. he was wanted in connection of the murder of a 26-year-old man whom he had a personal relationship with. the victim was from michigan and recently received a cosmetology license. according to police the murder happened in the apartment of wyndham lathem. the victim was brutally stabbed. wyndham lathem surrendered in oakland on friday after being on the run across the country for eight days. he will appear before a judge in dublin this morning at the east county hall of justice. the other suspect in the case a man named andrew warren works at oxford university in england. he surrendered in san francisco on friday as well. on the day of the murder the men drove to wisconsin 80 miles west of chicago made a $1000 donation to a library in the victim's name. while they were on the run wyndham lathem recorded a video of himself apologizing. more details could emerge ahead of the arraignment scheduled for 9:00 this morning here in dublin. we are working to find out if the other man being held in county jail in san francisco has an arraignment anytime soon. we expect lathem to appear before a judge in alameda county this morning. >> allie rasmus thank you. police in santa rosa are investigating a deadly police shooting from saturday morning. investigators received a 911 call from a home on west steele lane. someone at the house was acting crazy according to the call. they had a 12 inch kitchen knife and hurt somebody in the home. when police arrived they found a man hiding under a bed. investigators say that three officers spent several minutes trying to talk to him and then the suspect came toward the police and one of the officers shot and killed the man. the involved officers were wearing body cameras and have been placed on administrative leave. the sonoma county sheriff's office is investigating. police have not told us the name of the man. oakland police are investigating the discovery of a man's body yesterday at estuary park. it was found yesterday after 9:00 on embarcadero south. so far there is no police description of the man or any information on how he died. detectives are leading the investigation. mike pence is fighting back against reports that say he is thinking about running for president in three years. doug luzader with oakland hills area near the fire from last week. it consumed 20 acres and at this point they are making sure the fire does not flareup. the fire started wednesday afternoon along the grizzly peak boulevard. investigators are looking for signs of arson. an apartment fire in berkeley that injured one person is under investigation. the fire started last night on addison street near sacramento. one person was taken to the hospital for burns. the building was evacuated as crews put out the flames they were able to get the fire under control in one hour. the building has 27 apartments. three of them have smoke fire and water damage so people in the units were not allowed to return home. the fbi in minnesota is investigating a bombing on saturday of a mosque near minneapolis. nobody was injured but the explosion happened as worshipers prepared for morning prayers. an improvised explosive device was thrown to the window. the governor of minnesota condemned the attack calling it terrorism. no arrests have been made. france has launched a counterterrorism investigation after an attack at the eiffel tower on saturday. a man pulled out a knife yelled god is great in arabic but he was quickly surrounded by security and he surrendered. the eiffel tower was evacuated and it stayed closed for the rest of the night. the man recently got out of a psychiatric hospital. he told police he wanted to attack a soldier and isis told him to do it. military plane that crashed off the coast of australia has been found an australian dive team will start the recovery process this morning. three missing marines are now presumed dead. the marine corps has notified the families and recovery efforts could take several months. 23 servicemembers survived the crash. chicago plans to sue the doj over a threat to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities. this is a response to new trump administration guidelines that require they must share information with federal immigration authorities in order to qualify for public safety grants. chicago says that is unconstitutional. several southbound lanes on the golden gate bridge will be closed for pothole and pavement repairs. one southbound lane will be open between 9:00 pmn 4:00 am. southbound traffic will be diverted through the toll plaza. the overnight closures are expected to continue all this week through friday. let's quickly get a check on the bay bridge as we have major problems. >> a little better but not much. the crash has been cleared by the traffic is very slow. they cleared the traffic on the bridge but getting to the bridge is taking longer than an hour because of all the traffic that is stacked up. it has taken more than an hour to drive from the bridge to the macarthur maze and it is a serious thing give yourself some extra time this morning if you are driving to the bay bridge or even just on interstate 80 or even just on interstate 82 berkeley extra time is needed. this is a look at the toll plaza and things are starting to look more normal. it will take a while for this to unwind. we have our driver on the bridge approaching the maze and you can see traffic is not moving very well. morning. 680 slow at concord and walnut creek i want to mention we have traffic on 680 slowing down out of pleasanton because of some earlier accidents. 280 and san jose through downtown looking all right. let's get a check of the forecast with mr. steve paulson. we have a cooler forecast in fact we were just talking and we both give this a thumbs-up because july and early august was tough then we had the monsoon with high humidity but now we just have this big fog bank. the long-term forecast for the eclipse in idaho, i'm getting these questions but that is a little too far out. right now we are looking okay sony and 80 on the 21st. most people are headed to oregon . but that is a little too far out. we have a big load tapped into the tropical clouds giving us this cloud coverage with thunderstorms on friday and boy did it fire those up over the sierra but for us it has ushered in cooler air aloft with a big fog bank and also it has increased the onshore breeze. that is the best fog bank we have seen in a long time. more 60s 70s and 80s, 80s that is all some areas have been hard-pressed to get below 90 but not today. 70s and 80s for most inland locations. there has been a little shift near the coast with 60 the low in the city right where you should be on the high 67. so what is going on? the water temperatures have come up. san francisco was 60 now it is 68. monterey is 60 so this plays into a warmer coastal and they forecast. 60 in livermore, 60 in sunnyvale so everyone is really close on these temperatures. thunderstorm activity picking up again pushing to the east and northward into oregon and idaho. 50s and 60s across the south bay. lower 60s in campbell and san jose state as well. there is an onshore breeze even in vacaville. 61 monterey, the low will keep us on a cooler pattern over the next couple of days now there could be a warm-up by midweek mainly inland but not a huge warm-up just a little bit into the 90s but it is mainly cooler overall with low clouds clearing slowly to the coast but highs in the 60s and 70s some 80s as well. vacaville in the 70s and 80s, 72 oakland, 82 walnut creek, 90 in brentwood. 79 san jose, fremont 77, mid- savidge is in oakland with the surveillance images police want us to see and they are pretty clear pictures. >> very clear pictures. it was newly installed cameras onboard arc node trains that captured these images of a man who barked node police say has attacked two passengers at random without warning. investigators want you to look at these images because they want to find this man before he strikes again. this man is wanted for two disturbing crimes over the past week. the most recent attack on saturday onboard a san francisco bound train approaching the embarcadero station. the man punched a passenger in the face before running off the train. last thursday investigators say the same man swung bolt cutters at an unsuspecting man sitting on a train as he pulled into the bay for station in san leandro. in both cases the victims suffered nonlife threatening injuries. police are hoping someone recognizes the suspected attacker. >> we want to identify him so we can forbid him from being in the area so we can apprehend him and bring him to justice. >> these attacks are part of a troubling trend for part chick so far this year there has been an increase in violent crime across the system with robberies of 35% and assault up 27%. in the case of these recent attacks bart police say there is no sort of robbery motive involved. these were unprovoked attacks. the man in this case did not say anything he simply walked up and attacked passengers. if anyone recognizes the man please put in a call right away to police. >> alex savidge, thank you. the weather today fall. today we have a good fog bank in place with temperatures in the 60s 70s and mostly 80s inland. so that would be below average. not something santa rosa concorde earl of her more have said much example eastbound 80 on the freeway it has taken more than an hour to drive from the carquinez bridge down to the macarthur maze. it is getting a little better but the backup continues on the bay bridge and we do have our driver who has made it into san francisco and that only took well, about 40 minutes to make it across the span. now onto southbound 101 you can see our faithful driver with the camera which he is not using basically it is mounted on the car doing well so there goes one-on-one southbound headed to where the airport. let's move along and look at highway 4 westbound slow traffic there and slow between concord and walnut creek. we showed you the east shore freeway, if you are trying to get to the richmond bridge we have a large backup getting to the toll plaza it will be tough to get into marin county. now back to the desk. the search underway in san diego for a man who shot a sheriff's deputy after 1:00 this morning. police believe there was some argument between the officer and the suspect be for the shooting. the officer was shot three times and another man was hit. both are expected to be okay. a two-year-old girl has a fractured skull and her mother was hurt when a 50 foot tree branch fell on them during a company picnic saturday afternoon at menlo college. the branch was bigger than many of the trees on campus. there were no warning signs before the tree limb crashed onto several baby strollers and a children's table. students at the school say other trees have fallen recently but they are not too worried. >> i can say when the wind is strong you trees on campus. the little girl is at stanford medical center. her mother is being treated for a broken toe. the deadly amusement park ride at the ohio state fair is being blamed on excessive corrosion on a support beam. one man and four others were hurt on the ride. the ride is 15 years old, the dutch manufacturer kmg says the corrosion reduced the thickness on the wall of the beam holding the passenger gondola. kmg order similar rides around the world to be shut down. 30,000 current and former ucla students are being warned of a security breach after someone hacked into a computer server with personal information. a spokesperson says the cyber attack targeted information provided by students before april 2016. the information includes names addresses social security i was speaking to mike me back my coworker that handsome anger, he said there was a lot of road rage people were frustrated. i do not blame people for being frustrated get yourself out of there early to the bay bridge westbound as you come up or you could use bart jake -- or the fairies. we do have our driver driving back to the east bay and you can see that the traffic will be okay driving back northbound 101 approaching the 280 interchange right getting into san francisco that is bayshore boulevard on the right and this is san francisco on the peninsula as you can see a lot of stop and go they are pushing into the area now, looking at highway 4 this is our driver keith a very nice gentleman. if you're driving on the richmond bridge you can see that traffic is moving slowly getting to the richmond bridge because of this earlier incident, more on the south bay commute coming up. steve, these traffic reports are getting long we have a lot going on. >> mike mibach is a handsome man. what about me and dave clark? area and at the peninsula at 101 we are slow in both directions. on the south bay commute we have slow traffic on 280 from 17 up slow traffic at 101 and 81 slightly better options. 280 through downtown looks good. 8:03 back to the desk. bart police need help finding a man who committed two attacks on passengers. surveillance videos were released at a news conference this morning. the first attack was thursday at the station in san leandro. a man punched kick and hit another man in the head with old cutters on the train. on saturday the same man hit another person in the face on a train near the embarcadero. >> we want to identify him so we can prevent him from being in the area so we can apprehend him and bring him to justice. >> a new report says there has been an increase in violent crime on bart this year. alex savidge with a live report in 30 minutes. a man suspected in a chicago homicide who turned himself in in oakland will appear before a judge in alameda county one hour from now. that is where we find allie rasmus to explain the details and you just spoke with his attorney. >> reporter: i spoke with both of his attorneys. they maintain their client is innocent. of course that is what they are supposed to believe but the man is 42-year-old wyndham lathem of chicago. accused of a brutal murder in that city. he was on the run for about eight days before he turned himself into police. today he is scheduled to appear before a judge in alameda county at the east county hall of justice to start the process of being extradited back to cook county illinois to face charges. wyndham lathem was a microbiology professor at northwestern university accused of stabbing a 26-year-old man who he had a personal relationship with. the murder happened in the apartment of wyndham lathem . another man is also connected to this murder case. andrew warren works at oxford university in england. he surrendered on friday in san francisco. on the day of the murder the two men drove to wisconsin and made a $1000 donation to a local library in the name of the victim. while lathem was on the run he recorded a video of himself apologizing for making the biggest mistake of his life. he will be held at the jail and he is currently under a psychiatric hold not doing well although sheriff's confirm he is in fact under intense observation. the man's attorneys say that when the facts are revealed he will be exonerated. he is a distinguished individual and a great person. we have received numerous calls of support on his behalf. the hearing to start the extradition process will start at 9:00 this morning. lathem will appear before the judge at the hearing and it should be brief, his attorneys will not be fighting the process of being extradited. motions are set for the case of an undocumented immigrant killed of killing a woman. juan lopez has been charged with first-degree murder. the judge assigned to the case last week will hear the legal motion today. the woman was walking with her father and a family friend in july 2015 when a bullet hit her in the back calendar. lopez has been deported five times before the shooting. a trial date has yet to be scheduled. research in san diego for a man who shot an off- duty sheriff study this morning. police believe there was some kind of argument between the officer and suspect before the shooting. the officer was shot three times and another man was also hit. a manhunt underway in missouri to find the person who shot and killed a police officer there. officer gary michael was killed in the town of clinton near kansas city. a man opened fire during a traffic stop. the officer returned fire but the suspect drove off and crashed a few blocks away before fleeing on foot. the suspect has been identified as ian mccarthy. north korea says it will retaliate against the us for a tough un sanction on exports. north korea report the country will launch thousands fold revenge. the statement comes two days after the un voted to approve new sanctions against north korea. >> perhaps the most important element is the message that this sends to north korea of how unacceptable their behavior is. >> santa rosa police continue the investigation into a deadly police shooting from saturday morning. investigators received a 911 call from a home on west field lane, someone at the house was acting crazy and had a 12 inch kitchen knife and had already injured a woman at the house. when officers arrived they found a man hiding under a bed, three officers spent several minutes trying to talk to him, at one point he came toward police and he was shot and killed. the officers involved were wearing body cameras and they are on administrative leave. the sonoma county sheriff's office is now investigating the shooting. opened firefighters are making a sweep of the oakland hills after last week's fire that burned 20 acres. the fire started wednesday afternoon along the grizzly peak boulevard and south park drive. investigators are looking for signs of arson. an apartment fire in berkeley injured one person. the fire started at 7:15 last night near sacramento on addison street. one person was taken to the hospital the building was evacuated as crews worked to put out the flames. it took them one hour to get control of the fire. firefighters say three apartments have damage so the people in those apartments cannot return home. they are being helped by the red cross. the fbi is investigating the bombing of a mosque near minneapolis on saturday. the explosion happened as worshipers prepared for morning prayers. an improvised explosive device was thrown to a window. the minnesota governor condemned the attack calling it terrorism. france has launched a counterterrorism investigation after an attack at the eiffel tower. a man pulled out a knife yelled god is great in arabic and then he was surrounded by security that is when he surrendered. the eiffel tower was evacuated and stayed closed for the rest of the night. the man told police he wanted to attack a soldier and had been in touch with a member of isis who encouraged him to do so. six flags helped bridge. traffic is heavy across the peninsula but dumbarton bridge is not bad and in the south bay we have traffic onto 80 after 17 northbound 280 is not great so i would use 11 or 85 instead. 8:17 let's bring in steve paulson with your weather. we have a big change that started on the weekend last week we had the cloud coverage with tropical thunderstorms but those have pushed into the sierra. the message for us is a bigger fog bank with stronger onshore breeze and much cooler air with that combination we will have a cooler pattern. 60s and 70s now with a few 90s but most locations in the 80s. currently 61 with cloudy skies and a westwind at five miles per hour in daly city. 61 is pretty warm but look at the water temperatures. upper 50s and lower 60s so that is holding up in the coastal locations. 55 in woodside, 62 san mateo, 62 union city so there are mild readings at the coast and pane -- bay. moving inland we have this big fog bank triggering thunderstorms over the sierra from yesterday and northeast california over to areas in the north you can see things are calming down but we have a possibility today as the low pushes in things are moving north and east, we have lower clouds and plenty to talk about with temperatures near the coast slightly above average. inland temperatures will take a dip below average which is not something we have seen much this summer as we have been very warm. 60s 70s and 80s except for the inland areas. 62 fremont, 60 berkeley, 62 livermore, 63 san jose so we are starting to see temperatures pump up a little bit. thunderstorms north and east but in onshore breeze and big fog bank for us. even vacaville with the onshore breeze, lower clouds today and then this low is slowly weakening and then high pressure gradually builds in but we do not expect much change , no big extreme temperatures. cooler overall today with lower clouds clearing slowly to the coast. 60s 70s and 80s into clearlake but even they are out of the 100. 60s 70s and 80s across the region, it 89 in livermore currently at 84 and that is a pretty cool day for them. we have made 60s on the coast and 70s on the peninsula. if you like this weather you will are cooler with temperatures that are cooler inland today and average on the coast. the water temperatures have come up so they are not getting below 60 so the highs will be in the mid-60s. inland temperatures because of these thunderstorms over the sierra we had the storms blowing up and we have a possibility today with the lows being close enough and the low clouds and fog's are ramping up so highs today will be in the 60s 70s and 80s. there will be a few 90s but most locations which have been way above average for a few weeks today we are a little bit below average. overall temperatures will be cooler for many except for the coast and the bay. not much of a spread that were very close all over the map now we have a little separation. 50s and 60s with onshore breezes. lower clouds equaling a cooler overall forecast with lower clouds reluctant to burn back with the clearing at the coast in the 60s 70s and 80s. these are the coolest inland temperatures we have seen for a while. okay, we have the bay bridge backup and then all of a sudden things got worse now it is still bad? >> things are actually much better i am quite surprised. just from watching the traffic all these years if this were a day in february we would be at one hour delays but now we are at 36 minutes from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze slightly longer than usual but we have improvement which is good. things have been backed up to the bay bridge kind of like a normal monday. finally just a few hours after the crash we are getting back to the normal group which leads me to believe if we did not have this crash we would have a lighter than usual monday but this is not bad. looking at the san mateo bridge some people have been driving down into the san mateo bridge and traffic is moderate. it is heavy over at highway 101. looking at 880 down into san jose we have so traffic union city into fremont. 8:32, back to the desk. bart police want help finding a man who committed two week. these were unprovoked attacks that came without warning. thankfully the victims were not seriously hurt. investigators want you to look at these images of the man they are searching for wanted in connection with these crimes that happened recently. the most recent was on saturday on a san francisco bound train approaching the embarcadero station. police say the man punched a passenger in the face twice before running off the train. last thursday investigators believe the same man swung a pair of large bolt cutters at an unsuspecting man sitting on a train. this happened in san leandro. newly installed surveillance cameras onboard trains give investigators of these clear images of the attacker.>> thanks to the new camera system we were able to get high- quality photographs to distribute to the media in hopes of bringing him back to justice. >> these recent attacks are part of a troubling trend for bart. this year there has been an increase in violent crime across the mother was treated for a broken toe. in san jose the men arrested after being caught on a plane texting about sexually molesting children is due to be in court in minutes. michael keller will be arraigned on felony charges of attempted child molestation and solicitation of a sex crime. a woman sitting behind keller on a flight monday says she noticed him writing disturbing text messages. he could see the print on his phone. keller was arrested when the plane landed, the woman he was texting was also arrested in washington booked on felony charges including rape of a child and sexual exportation of a minor. google is dealing with a sexist internal memo that has a number of people outraged. an engineer posted a note on a network saying that there are not women in tech due to genetic differences and google should stop trying to bridge the gender gap. the google vice president of diversity says the viewpoint expressed by the engineer is not one that she or the company
