50s, midst 50s, upper 50s to 60s, especially on the peninsula. a lot of low to mid-50s. 53 in petaluma. a lot more fog in the north bay. all the moisture favors the four corners and not southern california or the bay area. 60s, 70s, 80s, to a few low 90s. are things picking up, sal? there's a little bit of slow traffic at the tracy triangle area. this morning we're looking at the commute on 205 and 580 and the traffic is going to be slow, primarily on 205 and then 580. they call it the triangle because it kind of looks like a triangle. they call it the tracy triangle and traffic is better. at the bay bridge we're doing well and traffic is looking good. >> let's go back to the desk. we begin the 5:00 hour with developing news. police are searching for answers following a disturbing discover inside san francisco's largest shopping mall. a body was discovered at the westfield mall on market street yesterday morning. authorities have ruled the death a homicide. the victim was a white man in his 30s. a cleaning crew found the body in a stairwell near the back entrance to bloomingdale's. police officers were on the scene a short time later. >> i was popping some kettle corn and three or four cop cars came up to the curb and stopped and a big suv pulled up and three cops got out of the car with machine guns drawn and ran into the mall. >> authorities are not revealing why they have ruled it a homicide but they are reviewing store surveillance video and talking to witnesses as they search for leads in the case. a man was shot last night near the coliseum. it happened about 9:00 on 69th avenue. the victim was a young man in his late teens or early 20s. he was shot once and is expected to survive. no word on what led up to the shooting. and san jose police are searching for a woman suspected of kidnapping her baby son. and police are asking for help to find her. 32-year-old-- and her 10-month- old son davian. she was told she would no longer have custody of the baby. pernell and the boy are still in santa clara county. davian needs medical treatment. >> what makes it more serious is we don't know yet. we don't know the extent of the severity of his medical issues and we're desperate to find out. >> san jose police say pernell may be driving a silver hyundai. 6 bxn 752 is the license plate. officials say pernell also uses the last name clark. a suspected car thief is behind bars after police say she tried to ditch a car and flee from an officer. this photo was posted of christine hill by the police. an officer ran the plates on the car she was driving yesterday and saw that it had been reported stolen in san jose. police say hill was arrested after she quickly parked the car. she was also found to be under the influence of a controlled substance and is facing multiple felony and drug charges. two officers are expected to be suspended. the city has investigated inappropriate racial and homophobic texts among a group of police officers. the entire police department will go through a refresher course on the city's policies against discrimination and harassment. the mayor labeled the texts as hateful speech. some of the officers were engaging in it or tolerating it. a san francisco paramedic is accused of setting off an explosive outside a neighbor's home. james novello faces 26 felony charges in connection with last week's explosion outside a home on madrid street. nobody was hurt. it may be related to a neighborhood dispute over parking. uncle sam is coming to the aid of those who lost their homes in june. disaster relief loans of $2 million for businesses. the five-alarm fire displaced about 40 residents and at least seven businesses. a student pilot in the south bay learned the hard way about waiting too long to make a decision. the student was working on takeoffs and landings. the student pilot took longer to set the plane down than a more experienced pilot would have taken. the plane hit a fence and ended up on tully road next to the airport. they did not have enough power to take off again. >> i was at the controls and basically, i would have gone around sooner. >> the airport was closed for an hour while crews cut the plane out of the mangled fence and tully road was also closed. no one was hurt and the teenage students pilot has not said when or if he plans to fly again. a suspected burglar broke into a house yesterday afternoon near skyline boulevard. the suspect got in through an unlocked sliding glass door and ran into someone inside the house. the suspect punched the victim and got away with electronics. suspect is latino with a heavy build. you can see the police sketch. if you have any information, call san bruno police. police in berkeley are warning people to pay close attention to what's around you after two people playing pokemon go were victims of robberies. the victim was walking and distracted. the first robbery happened on dana street in july. two people followed a woman, knocked her to the ground, and stole her phone. two weeks later, they targeted a man at civic center park. >> at this point it appears they are crimes of opportunity. somebody is seen walking with a cell phone and at a distance they stand out like a candle in the dark. >> police arrested two suspects in connection with the most recent robbery. and the two suspects in the first case -- they're out there on the loose. another man playing pokemon go was targeted but able to hang onto his phone. 23-year-old demaria evans grabbed a phone from a man on 17th street in the mission. the victim chased evans and evans claimed he had a gun. the victim got the attention of nearby police officers on patrol. and they arrested evans and say he was not armed. we're following developing news out of maryland. fire officials say up to seven people are unaccounted for at this point following a massive fire at an apartment complex overnight. take a look at the video. you can see people hanging out of the window. the fire destroyed two apartment buildings in silver spring, maryland. firefighters had to rescue several people from the upper floors. 30 people were injured and most of them jumped from windows to escape the fire. some people reported hearing an explosion before the fire started. a climbing stunt in new york brings new attention to an unusual election year as donald trump and hillary clinton spar over everything from new e-mail regulations to the fall debate schedule. doug luzader has the latest on the crazy race. >> reporter: and pam, crazy is the right word. donald trump and hillary clinton are clamoring for voters attention. it's tough for them to compete with a guy determined to climb a building with suction cups. it doesn't get more dramatic than this. a man climbing trump tower in new york after saying he wanted to meet with the republican nominee. it ended abruptly and safely. and donald trump made an explosive claim about president obama. >> he founded isis. and i would say the cofounder would be crooked hillary clinton. >> reporter: hillary clinton is facing more e-mail controversy with a new batch of messages showing ties between the state department and the clinton foundation when she served as secretary of state. but she's making more headway with some republicans. two former officials from the george b bush administration. both figure prominently on her website, backing her. >> i am humbled and moved by the republicans who are willing to stand up and say that donald trump doesn't represent their values. >> and the debate over the debate continues with three presidential debates looming. trump is willing to consider and doesn't like the dates and tells time magazine it will depend on who moderates. that hasn't been an english rock band is teaming with peta for a video game to promote animal rights. the hit song meat is murder. in the game, players have to save animals such as chickens, cows, and turkeys, before they get too close to buzz saws. the band calls it a social crusade to protect animals from social aggression. a suit was filed by the families of two american contractors killed in jordan. they claim that twitter contradicted to their deaths by -- contributed to their deaths by allowing isis to spread their message. the judge ruled that twitter was not spokeswoman. a similar lawsuit was filed by the father of the student killed in paris. a class action complaint has been filed in the case of the high-rise that's leaning and sinking. the millennium towers. the complaint towers the millennium partners and the authority which is building the transit center. there are uneven floors, cracks in the walls and other construction problems. they claim the high-rise was not anchored into the bedrock. and construction of the transit center is making matters worse. now back to sal for a check on traffic. so far it's been pretty light. it will start getting busy as people head back to school. >> absolutely. we are seeing a gradual runup to that. this is a transition month. we're starting all well between the gilroy commute. a lot of people are driving to san jose and we're seeing slow traffic just outside of morgan hill heading up to san jose approaching the blossom him area and getting into the valley. it's not completely light. we have stop and go traffic. it's down to 8 miles per hour. i'm going to investigate to see if there's something going on in san jose that's causing the slow traffic. i don't see it yet. there could be something going on. let's take a look at live pictures. you'll see 880 in both directions is moving well. and at the bay bridge, 5:30 is when the metering lights go on. and that changes the commute. still looking good getting on the span. 5:19 and let's go to steve. a little bit more in the way of fog. some of it has been up. and the basis seems to be coming down. warmer air aloft. and a combination of the low cloud deck and fog. really foggy in the sunset district. i believe there's some visibility that has been reduced. and it should clear sooner today. the high pressure is showing signs of building. the delta breeze is coming down a little bit. we'll see if that continues. 50s, low to mid- to upper. a southeast breeze on the peninsula equals low 60s. 58 pittsburgh and same for walnut creek. close on all the temps. any breeze, a little bit west and north. it's probably not going to play into the forecast pattern but the high pressure is as that begins to nose in. 59 in ukiah and sacramento. and 55 in arcata. and arizona, new mexico, colorado but not southern california and not in the sierra. the system pushes it off to the east. high pressure says i think i'll kick in a little bit and it will start tomorrow but as we head to friday, saturday and sunday, inland temperatures will get back. 60s and 70s by the coast and bay, that's not changing. if anything is changing, it's the fog which is reducing visibility. it looking warm to hot for those away from the coast as we go into the weekend. time is 5:21. days of delays and long lines. in 20 minutes we'll take a look at what air travelers are 2. there's a major story from canada. the government says a suspected terrorist was shot and killed in ontario. the anti-terror operation involved the royal canadian mounted police. they targeted a 24-year-old man who was arrested last year after he openly supported isis on social media. he planned a suicide bombing in a public area. and a 14-year-old was shot and killed by police in los angeles. police were called tuesday night about two men writing gang style graffiti in the area. one suspect ran away and reportedly fired a shot at police. one officer fired back, hitting and killing the suspect. the coroner later identified the man as a 14-year-old boy. the other suspect was detained and he turned out to be a 16- year-old. police also confiscated a loaded gun. it's not clear if the gun was fired. a los angeles serial killer known as the grim sleeper has been sentenced to death for the murders of nine women and a teenage girl. lonnie franklin jr. was sentenced by a judge who called the crimes monstrous. investigators believe he may have killed as many as 25 women. the name grim sleeper refers to a gap in the killings between 1988 and 2002. he will not be on death row at san quentin until the execution is carried out. new developments this morning involving the rio summer olympics. the track and field competition begins tomorrow. and lawrence sebastian ko talked about his first year in office. he talked about reorganizing the federation to stop performance enhancing drugs like banning the russian track and field team after allegations of government sponsored doping. >> russia has let down the athletes. we have not banned athletes. this is a failure to oversee and protect the athletes. sebastian-- his organization is working to low russians back to track and field competition but he wants to make sure there's an even playing field first. it was a destructive fire and now we know what caused the valley fire. and a former palo alto official is fed up with the high cost of housing. her resignation letter is shining a light on the problem. the commute is getting busier around the area. a live look on the way to the tunnel. and traffic is getting looks quiet. and a deep system to the end of the month. not much of a breeze. there's a component of a west or southwest for most. low 60s on the peninsula. menlo park, stanford, los altos. and that's the southeast breeze coming up from san jose and also at mountain view. fog will retreat and burn off for some. 60s, 70s, 80s, and a couple of 90s. i was just thinking the music i grew up with. glenn miller and arty shaw. just kidding. good morning, everyone. we are now in the full part of the commute. this is the part where you start seeing some legitimate slowdowns. we start in solano county. traffic is moving well heading out to vacaville and fairfield all the way to vallejo. and i want to update you on something. northbound 101 there was roadwork and they have cleared it but that's why it was a little bit slow. that should be picking up very soon, the traffic should be picking up now that the roadwork has been removed. interstate 880 traffic is moving well in both directions in front of the oakland coliseum. and at the bay bridge, the metering lights have gone on. it's a 10 minute delay before you make it to the span. a san jose couple is asking for prayers and help from the public after a hit-and-run crash that left their son critically injured and on life support. the crash happened at august 3rd at the intersection of story road and via ferrari, not far from the iglesia cristo church. it was 5:00 in the morning when he was hit and the driver kept going. he has a severe brain injury and is in a coma. now his family is asking for help from anyone who may have seen anything to call police. >> he has destroyed my family because we're not going to be the same. >> i'm not going to be the same. >> the family says doctors have told them that he is not likely to survive but his participants refuse to give up hope. oakland police have arrested a suspect in the killing of two people this week and the attempted killing of a third person. he shot into a car in east oakland monday. they say he killed two men and officers say a second suspect shot a third victim inside the car before he and hernandez set the car on fire. he's charged with several counts including two for murder. the second suspect is at large. and the third victim is expected to recover. >> >> there was a protest in santa rosa. a sheriff's deputy who shot and killed a teenager three years ago has been promoted. protesters he would signs mourning the death of apprehendy lopez. he was playing with a fake gun and was shot and killed by the deputy who thought the toy was a real gun. lopez refused orders to put down the fake gun and was killed. >> i think people got tired of protesting and seeing nothing change. it's been >> three years later. nothing has changed. the sheriff explained the promotion saying that the actions in 2013 were deemed justifiable force. a college baseball player was shot and killed at the aquatic park. he was a star baseball player in stockton. investigators say he was shot and killed near gear deli square. there are no suspects and u.s. park police are asking anyone who may have seen anything suspicious to call them. the funeral for riley will be held tomorrow. now to new developments in the devastating valley fire in lake county last year. cal fire says faulty wiring to a hot tub caused the massive fire. in that fire that began september 12th. investigators determined that an electrical connection overheated and sparked the fire at a home in the town of cobb. >> there's a permit required for electrical installation and to our knowledge we were unable to locate or identify a permit on file. >> the lake county district attorney will determine if charges will be filed. it was the third most destructive in state history. a medical plane that crashed on the way to oakland broke up during the flight and why that happened is still a mystery. the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit and tried to fly back to crescent city before the plane crashed. the ntsb spoke to witnesses who reported a large flash in the sky before the crash. four people were killed, a pilot, a nurse, a paramedic, and a patient. it could be a year before a final report. crews are cleaning up a flooded annex facility to solano community college. construction crews working on a roof of a building accidently hit a water pipe and flooded a building with thousands of gallons of water. the president of the college says ceiling tiles fell in classrooms. the school is trying to find an alternate location but they promise the semester will start on monday. the university of california and president napolitano will be audited. they are being asked to investigate how the $66 million annual budget is spent. the legislature needs a better picture of the university spending. the audit is expected to take about eight months. it comes at a time when they are pushing for more funding and it's expected to raise tuition prices next year. court workers will continue the strike and the union is heading back to the bargaining table. workers have been on strike for a week now. clerks have not had a pay raise in eight years. they want a 3% increase during the second year of a new contract. and the courts are offering no second year raise. both sides have agreed to work with a mediator to see if they can work a compromise. a city official fed up with the high cost of housing has resigned. janine de la vega is now in palo alto this morning with more on this story, janine -- >> reporter: pam, we all know that the bay area to live here is pricey especially in palo alto. and this woman who is a corporate attorney and her husband who is a software engineer -- they say they still can't make it. she was a member of the transportation and planning commission and resigned from her position and told the city that her family can no longer afford to live in palo alto and they are moving to santa cruz. she posted her resignation letter online and it's getting a lot of attention with people. she rents a home with another couple for $6200 a month. if they wanted to buy the home, the mortgage would be $12,000 a month. if professionals like me cannot raise a family here, all of teachers, first responders, and service workers are in dire straits. we see openings at the police department that we can't fill and teacher korans we can't renew -- teacher contracts we can't renew. the council has ignored her request and she is critical of city officials. we have reached out to downing to get a response from her and we're hoping to catch up with people who live in people who live in palo alto to get their perspective. >> it's a problem all over the bay area, california as well. 5:40 is the time. self-service checkouts at the grocery store can airlines say flights are getting back to normal this morning. delta canceled about 300 flights around the country yesterday. and if you have to catch a delta flight this morning, call the airline ahead of time. the delta ceo has apologized for the big computer problem that grounded a thousand flights on monday. there have been hundreds of cancellations and delays since then. the warriors will have a presence at the new middle school in san francisco. the team will pay between 15 to $20,000 to resurface the court and emblazon their logo on a wall. the school voted to lift an advertising ban. some people are concerned that it will become a mini warriors arena. but others say schools need donations to flourish. the women's relay team provided a lot of excitement. katie ledecky dove in the pool and picked up two seconds on the competition during her four laps as the team's anchor. kristin armstrong won the women's cycling time trial. and three silver and one brown in fencing, diving, and swimming. the u.s. is on top with a total of 32 medals, 11 gold. china has 10 gold and 23 medals overall. japan has 18 medals and that includes six gold medals. the u.s. is expected to crawford from the san francisco giants, the shortstop. >> let's look at the tracy commute. we have slow traffic on westbound 580. we've had a couple of earlier crashes. nothing there that was long but we've had a lot of slow traffic. worse than normal and extending to livermore. give yourself plenty of extra time and the speeds are down. especially as you come to the livermore valley. speeds are less than 10 miles per hour. a very frustrating commute. and if this is you. you need extra time this morning. it's not a typical commute. it's worse than that. let's take a look at the san mateo bridge. that looks good heading to the high-rise. and at the bay bridge toll plaza, it's about a 15 to 20- minute delay are no major issues. now let's go to steve in the weather center. >> and the hall of fame took his bat. yes, they did. let's get to it. we have thick fog and for some you can't see across the street. temperatures continue to be small line between coast, bay, and inland. we can get a 40-degree spread but they are not moving that much. 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. we're talking about the moisture coming up from mexico, javier and the dust storms continue to fire up through arizona and new mexico. torrential rain and it just missed california and did not go up the sierra. and you get the dust storms over phoenix and much of arizona and new mexico and they can get 2 inches, almost an inch and a half. and that continues today. but it's not taking the turn going into california. so the pattern looks to be stuck not only here but there. and we get the fog and low clouds and an okay breeze, nothing crazy. 50s on the temps, except the peninsula. and that's pretty mild conditions. also menlo park. palo alto 61. and a few 50s towards belmont and san mateo. 51 los gatos. and also you get the temperatures in the mountains, 30s and 40s, and 59 in sacramento and ukiah. and in the desert you can see the difference with all the moisture. won't make the move to california or southern nevada. and it will be an active day. it's been lighting up from salt lake city to denver to albuquerque to phoenix. very active there. the system is sweeping in and pushes that away from the sierra. and that's why they've been sunny to mostly sunny. 60s, 70s, 80s to 90s on the temps. and tomorrow warmer inland and then we carry that into the weekend. it will be pretty nice. >> steve are you going to let me see the meteor showers. the problem is the fog. >> tonight doesn't work for me. i have to get up early tomorrow. so tomorrow night will be okay. >> maybe when you're driving in because jupiter's rotation around the sun pulls more into our viewing age. it will peak late tonight, early tomorrow morning. contra costa officials have confirmed there's a toxin in waters in the far eastern part of the county. an algae bloom around discovery bay could be dangerous to people, pets, and livestock. the problem is especially risky for dogs, exposure to the algae causes rashes, eye irritation. stay out of the water and keep animals out of the water. and drinking water from the tap is not affected. a mother in fairfield says her young daughter has recovered from a rare disease thanks to the gift of blood. she's healthy now but a year ago she was diagnosed with a disease that hurt her immune system. she had to have 16 rounds of team therapy and 30 blood transfusions. >> to see her get the blood was very hard for me. i sat there and cried. it was terrible. but watching her body recover from the blood was amazing. >> a month ago she was given the all clear by her doctor. her mom is encouraging everybody to donate blood saying it can be a matter of life or death in the life of a child. a 10-year-old girl is spreading kindness and love with a bracelet. her name is leah nelson and started the because i care campaign. she made bracelets for family and friends and said pass it along. you get a bracelet and make three more. >> i kind of put my dad to work. he answers like messages on social media because i don't know how to work that stuff. he answers messages and stuff. and he's like dang, you're like a little ceo to me. >> i think i love her. >> i think we all
