investigating several suspicious incidents at the alameda county courthouse in oakland. officials had to put the building on lockdown after a backpack was left outside. when police confronted a man about that backpack, he got into an altercation about sheriffs deputies. the 26-year-old man does not appeared to be -- appear to be connected to two fire bombing incidents at the courthouse. the first happened on october 25th, the second yesterday morning. >> the two fire bombing incidents are suspicious. we believe they might be linked up. there are too many coincidence or not a coincidence in this case. we are looking to see if the two previous fire bombings are connected. >> no one was injured in either case. sky fox was overhead as the sheriff's bomb squad suited up to inspect the backpack with an x-ray. it was later deemed to be safe. our time is 4:32. the family of a bay area man who was killed by a hit-and-run driver is asking you for help. they say that mark johnson was an innocent bystander waiting for a bus in oakland when he was hit by a speeding car along international boulevard near 82nd avenue. back on december 4th about 1:00 a.m. he died there at the scene. johnson's daughter and son-in- law went back to the crash scene. they say johnson was waiting for a bus to go home after playing bingo nearby. they found a lot of damage to the base of a sign at the parking lot of walgreen's. they saw a tree that was knocked down, a partially knockedover fence but found no answers so they are asking for the driver who did this to come forward. >> broke my heart because we don't have justice that is out there. we don't know where they are. >> 49-year-old mark johnson worked as a handy man. his family says he had a big smile and he had a big heart. a wake will be held for him this sunday. the police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. police in east palo alto are investigating a murder- suicide after two women found dead yesterday. officers were called to a home on tuscany court after neighbors heard gunshots around 9:30 in the morning. investigators found the bodies of two women. police say one victim was 50 years old, the other 57 but their names have not been released. police say this is east palo alto's first murder case of the year. new information about a pedestrian who was struck and killed by a light rail train in san jose tuesday night. the santa clara county medical examiner identified the victim as 78-year-old of san jose. the collision happened about 6:00 along north first street in the evening. a witness said the victim was apparently trying to take a short cut across the tracks instead of using a crosswalk further down the street. time is now 4:34. two men charged in oakland's deadly ghost ship warehouse fire will soon find out if they will be going on trial. the master tenant derick almena and max harris are charged with involuntarily manslaughter. 36 people died in that fire last december. during yesterday's preliminary hearing, atf agent whitney hammoth testified that he described himself as the warehouse's creative director. according to the agent, harris told her his function was to make sure that the, quote, ship kept sailing and because of his leadership role, harris stopped paying rent. defense lawyers haven't called any witnesses in this preliminary hearing but say they whittled away at the d.a.'s case. >> we were successful complete at changing the narrative as far as whether max harris was second in command, he was not. whether he promoted the party. he didn't. whether he blocked an exit, he didn't. >> also on the witness stand, the assistant fire marshal who confirmed that investigators weren't able to determine the cause of the fire but suspect it was electrical in nature. that preliminary hearing is expected to wrap up today. senator dianne feinstein is asking the head of immigration and customs enforcement to look into several complaints about the west contra costa county jail in richmond. the immigration and customs department oversees the facility where about 200 immigrants are being held while they wait for deportation hearings. the senator says many of the women in that jail report that they are not allowed to use the rest rooms and says in some cases people are asking to be deported rather than pursue their claims in immigration court. our time is 4:35. outreach workers will offer medical and social services to sex workers in san francisco's mission district beginning next month. it's part of a new pilot program. the outreach program will be operated by saint james infirmary, it's a clinic that has worked with sex workers in other parts of san francisco since 1999. it will operate out of a van between midnight and 5:00 a.m. the goal is to help address some of the public safety concerns around sex workers in the mission district. the police say people who live in the area often call the police saying they have seen women being verbally and physically abused. there's a warning today in the peninsula after a big spike in car burglaries at a shopping -- at shopping areas in san mateo. two of the spots burglars are targeting are the bridge point shopping center and marina plaza. police say both areas are right off of highway 101 making it easy for criminals to get in and out quickly. san mateo police say auto burglaries more than doubled in october. however, those numbers are starting to drop after digital message boards went up at busy shopping centers warning about the dangers. >> we have sent out proactive patrols in high visibility and uniform and black and whites so that they can be in those targeted areas. >> now, police say in some cases burglars break into -- break into cars and steal garage door openers and then use the address inside the registration -- inside the car to break into people's homes too, keeping valuables out of plain view is the best way to protect yourself. according to police, if you see something suspicious, contact police immediately. 4:37. in santa rosa people in fire ravaged neighborhoods received special messages yesterday from people who survived other tragedies. as ktvu's rob roth found out, this is a program where communities have once received emotional support during a difficult time, pay it forward and help others now. >> reporter: fire ravaged neighborhood here among the gray lots filled with ash and debris, two fire survivors are hanging stars with messages of support. >> it helps show you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that we will get through this and people do every day. >> reporter: these symbols are sponsored by stars of hope, an organization forged by tragedy. >> really beautiful. >> reporter: it was started by this family who wanted to honor his business partner killed in the attacks on 9/11 by offering emotional support to victims of other tragedies. >> we also wanted to make a statement that new yorkers will never forget what people did for us in our time of need. >> reporter: and stars of hope manager josh garcia was working at the pulse nightclub in orlando, florida when a terrorist shot to death 49 people. he says after the attack, the club received similar stars and he wanted to get involved with the program. >> the first boxes we received, it was the first time i saw a smile, a glimpse of hope from our employees' faces. >> reporter: in a classic case of paying it forward, the stars now hanging in fountain grove were hand painted by children and survivors of the san bernardino terrorist attack in 2015 that killed 14 people. san bernardino had received stars from victims of other mass shootings and natural disasters. >> when you're going through that, your mind is playing tricks on you so know there's not just hate in the world. there's still people full of love and light at the end of the tunnel, really helped in that healing process. >> reporter: those in the program say it may seem like a small gesture but has healing powers for those making the stars and those receiving theming. >> i feel incredibly supported and understood. >> reporter: organizers say once fire victims here get back on their feet, they will be asked to make stars for victims of some disaster in the future. in santa rosa, rob roth, ktvu fox 2 news. time now is 4:39, report. disney is buying a large part of 21st century fox in a $52 billion deal. the deal includes fox's film and television studios, cable and international tv businesses, as it tries to meet competition from technology companies like netflix in the entertainment industry. before the buyout, 21st century fox will separate the fox broadcasting network and stations, fox newschannel and fox business network. ktvu is owned by news corps which is also the parent company of 21st century fox. our time is now 4:43. in san francisco a security robot working at the spca has greatly reduced the number of car break-ins at that organization's parking lot. ktvu's tom vacar looks at this technology which is common in silicon valley and at industrial parks. it's being used a lot more by all kinds of businesses. >> reporter: the san francisco spca comprises an entire city block in a mostly industrial area that has some crime, especially auto break-ins. so the spca put an autonomous security robot on its campus as well as surrounding sidewalks and lo and behold since k-9 has been on the job, campus burglaries, auto break-ins and vandalisms have been greatly reduced. the 5-foot tall, 300-pound robot called k-9 uses cameras, laser 3d mapping, gps, microphones and license plate recognition software. a fairly large homeless camp site has also disappeared but at one point someone attacked the robot, restrained it and put barbecue sauce on its sensors. >> if somebody is messing with it and they are trying to keep it from moving and doing its duty, then it will begin to sound an alarm and it will send an alert back to the operation center. >> reporter: today there is but one tent across the street why the robot never goes. >> i thought it was weird. i never seen anything like it. my dog constantly barked at it until about a week and then he got used to it. kind of irritating. >> reporter: the reason security robots are becoming so popular is that they can work all three shifts, they never get tired, they never take a nap, they never call in sick and they see everything, but still humans have to interpret what they see. city officials have told the spca to no longer deploy the robot on public sidewalks until such time it secures a permit or it will face a $1000 a day fine. both the spca and sunnyvale based night scope say there's no intent to clear homeless out good. let's go this way. not up there. traffic is moving along relatively well. if you're driving into the area, we have had some minor accidents that haven't caused any slow traffic. we are watching it for you, let you know if anything becomes superserious. traffic still looks good to 238. also north and southbound 880 traffic moving well in both directions. no major issues here as you drive past any reported yet. weekend change, yes, rain, no, maybe a quick dusting of snow in the sierra, little change today, hazy sunshine but a system, called an inside slider is what they call them. wind and cooler reinforcement is usually what develops as the low will develop more towards southern california, we will be to the north so cranking up the breeze on the weekend. everything continues to come bit of haze and smoke, it's another day of sunshine in the afternoon, a layer kind of a day. it's cold in the morning and it's not bad in the afternoon, but, boy, about 3:30, 4:00 when that sun drops, past year. marijuana use up significantly more than cigarette smoking, about 22% of high school seniors said they had used marijuana within the previous 30 days and 16% had used a vaping device. only 9% had smoked cigarettes. firefighters rescued two people and seven dogs after a fire broke out at a home in newark. the fire was reported at around 4:40 yesterday afternoon. alameda county firefighters rescued the residents and their pets through second story windows. the fire was contained to the kitchen and there were no injuries. the cause of the fire is being investigated. time now 4:54. some north bay wildfire survivors are getting early holiday gifts. a company in emeryville is offering this, free holiday photo shoots to people who lost their homes last october. this idea came from an art.com employee who had family members who lost their homes in the fire. many of the families who are having these portraits taken saying they raced from their homes, didn't take anything, including irreplaceable family photos. one of the photographers described the portraits as, well, unreal. >> to see the hope that everybody has, everybody that's come through has been so positive. >> for me more than anything, i think it represents the kindness of our community. >> almost all the families we talked to say when they finally have new homes, these photos will be among the very first things they will find places for. tonight a second benefit concert for north bay wildfire victims will be held in san francisco. the red hot chili peppers will headline band together 2 in san francisco. there are still tickets available. 100% of ticket sales will be donated to the tipping point emergency relief fund. the first concert raised nearly $17 million. and san francisco city hall was filled with holiday spirit last night as families in need enjoyed a celebration just for them. the united way emerging leaders program chose 100 young people to enjoy an evening of food, entertainment and gifts along with their families. the winter wonder land event included a visit from santa claus. many of those at city hall last night also reflected on their memories of the late mayor ed lee. >> tonight we took a moment of silence for ed lee and we just want to thank him for his leadership, his service and his heart. i think everybody in this room knows that everyone took a step forward under his leadership and we will always remember him. >> the community youth center of san francisco partnered with starbucks and the united way for last night's event. time is 4:56. more about honoring ed lee. now there's a date set for a memorial to honor mayor lee who, as you know, died on tuesday. and also millions of dollars will be cut from the oakland school district. coming up,
