on it 2-on i'm dave clark. >> and i'm tori campbell. breaking news out of pacific. a sail boat in distress with three people on board. now with new information from people at the scene. good morning. >> reporter: the captain of this boat is desperately trying to save his sail boat. you can see the helicopter just arriving. this is very shallow. it did k still a it actually not come in. right now we're sort of a stand till waiting to see what will happen. you can seattle man is on board frantically trying to steer the boat to deep from going into the waves. and there's a lot more actually with regard to what this captain is doing and joining me is live path congress -- pat conroy and he is a captain of his own boat. so he can put it into perspective. >> kind of looks like he's steering to try to create a hull. but here's again the tide. the tide is going to out. and he's in a really bad spot. here's doing what he can do but definitely stuck and probably to wait until the high tide comes in this evening. >> reporter: a long time and i know he was it in here with it around 4:30. >> someone told me 4:30 which was peak high tide. that's why she's far in now. >> and that is really obviously per cares you situation to be in and that backboat looks like a very nice one. >> i would assume that's a professionally crewed boat. it's called the darling i saw and it's not from around here. so i don't know what happened if they fell asleep or they had mechanical problems. don't know. not a spot. they don't look they're in danger for their safety but the boat is not in a good spot. coastguard helicopter. at this point -- it's head towards us. so we had been told it was possible. looks like it may be landing. we were told it could be possible that they try to get a radio out to this crew because there has been no communication. we believe somebody was actually walking alonger the beach, saw the boat and called 911. so they are trying to get a radio to they they can communicate with the fire department and police. you can see the helicopters coming in we're not sure if they're dropping a swimmer or landing we're sort of in standby moan. but a persons who the exam tin frantically trying to keep his boat from tipping over. and as we mentioned the gentleman mentioned, the captain of his boat, trying to create this hull so that it's able to maneuver and at some point able to steer up and out into the ocean. that keel being about ten feet long. so a portion of that is stuck in the and is at the moment. you can see that the coast guard here coming in. looks like it's landing. so we're going to be monitoring the situation here trying to see what their plan is. if they're going to send a swimmer to give a radio of the vote -- to the boat or what sort of options they have. again, it is so shallow at this coast guard vessel is not able to come in and help give this boat a toe. and as the captain mentioned this could be in the evening before this boat is able to pull on out of here. so not sure again if this hell continuer is going to be landing or just trying to assess the situation, getting closer to the boat here. we're watching all that live as you are. so we're not sure exactly how this is going to play out here over the next hour or so. but we're going to stay on scene and we will let you know how it all pans out. back to you. thank you. or the other and it is sitting on some rocks. obviously got stuck there. and now it is stuck there on some rocks. this is a coast guard helicopters that be has been huff -- hovering over head. looks like it's just assessing the situation. there are security people online and on the coast. we will stay on top of this situation good and back if there's anymore development right now. turning now to overnight news at 7:06. a man shot and killed in the campbell. it happened on dumpster drive and west halt her avenue. ktvu's alex savage is there live. >> reporter: a car seen speeding way from the area but not sure if this was a drive by or the shooter walked right up the victim. the young man was shot right here on this street. and it's next to the campbell community center. now this morning police are trying to solve the city's first killing in five years. it was about 10:30 last night. but officers came to the intersection they found and 18- year-old man on the ground with at least one gunshot bound he was transported to medical center for emergency surgery. but in the end he did not survive. police have identified the victim as richard vaga from campbell. a sergeant told us it's too early to say what the motive might have been. >> we don't know exactly what happened. we don't have any information that there was a verbal confrontation. but we're looking into all the different possibilities. >> reporter: police say anybodies reported seeing the possible shooter driving off in a dark colored sedan. that is really the best lead investigator have. they talked to a lot of neighbors. they're hoping to hear from more people who witnessed or have surveillance cameras on their home in this case have captured something as they try solve again, the city's first homicide in five years. an unusual occurrence here in campbell 37 we are live this morning in campbell. channel 2 news. sal, there's a new crash. what happened? >> in lafayette. even though the crash is on the minutes ago a coast guard swimmer was dropped from the boat near -- near the boat from a chopper. the boat's engines had to be shut off to protect the swimmer. that's why the boat is protecting size sideways. the swimmer delivered a radio. people on scene say i boat may be stuck until high tied. and the investigation underway into an early morning fire in a fast food restaurant. our reporters the outside looks like it's damaged pretty badly. here in a fire early this morning. but firefighters tell us, you know, it is salvageable. if you go down here as my photographer pans down here this exterior storage facility that's where a vend -- machine was. and they say that's where the fire started. a driver passing by saw an orange glow and flames inside the restaurant just before 5 this morning. and called 911. police evacuated nearby residents. firefighters arrived shortly later and were able to contain. it now, the fire did not damage the interior of the restaurant. but it dun d badly damage the outside and the roof. it is heart breaking for the restaurant's employees. here's what one of them had to say just moments ago. >> like a mad dream. might mare. first -- night mare. it's hard it to comprehend that's what's really going on. our lively hood. >> reporter: that was the own earest assistant. they live -- owner's assistant. they live next door. he said it's very frightening. arson investigators are on the scene. one on the roof right now taking pictures sort of of the damage. right now they don't think it's suspicious but they're not ruling anything out. they're still trying to determining the cause. what helped the building from being a complete loss is that it was made of bricks. so the only thing that burned was really the wood here and really that it's lucky. but even sad for the firefighters to see it in flames because a lot of people have heard of the happy hound because it's been around so long. coming up in the next hour we'll tell you when say when they pulled him over and got out of their car, the man tried to run over one of the officers. that officer opened fire and a passenger in the was a the killed. the driver now facing jail time and on assault and charges. this recent string started in last week a sheriff's deputy shot and kill and kidnapping suspect. then daily city police chase and stolen car into san francisco. officers say the driver was shot after pointing a gun at police. on saturday afternoon, a chase in san jose ended with a police shooting and killing the driver of that car. later this same day a man was shot in union city after place say he point and gun at them during a traffic spot. >> more people have better guns or not afraid of cops anymore. >> police officer have a very tough job and i'm proud of what they do. >> reporter: this all comes just days after two police officers in santa cruise were shot and killed. a criminology professors tells the con call that when you see a cluster that follows the radio. run crew member initially told the coast guard they wanted off the boat and were going to gets off but we haven't seen that person since. so things not adding up. here. we can see the boat out of george town. and in one hour it's going to be lowest tide. so that obviously is going to be extremely challenging and then the hogtied won't come back in until 10:00 tonight. so obviously a gunman. alex joins us live. >> reporter: good morning. people in this area frankly are fightenned after this deadly shooting last night. one man i talked to told he me he saw the victim bleeding in the street. the young man was shot right here on the sidewalk and it's next to the campbell community center. just within the last hour we saw two police officers return to this area and they were knock on doors and searching for witnesses. one neighbor told me he weird shots. this was around 10:30 last night. and when police arrived here at intersection they found 18-year- old man with at least one gunshot wound. he was rushed however to the the medical center for emergency surgery, but he did not survive. this morning police have identified that victim as richard vaga from campbell. investigators are aren't sure what the motive might have been. it was the first killing in campbell in more than 5 years. here's a neighbor who didn't want to be identified. >> that doesn't surprise me. although we're right on the border of san jose and they have a lot of activity over there. this is an extremely nice police station to live. very quiet. apart from loud kids we never have a problem. >> reporter: the best lead is witnesses reported seeing the possible shooter driving off in a dark colored sedan. no description on the person inside. investigators hoping more people will him specifically about what he thought the motive might have been for this killing. he said they're exploring a number of different avenues but they are considering the possibility this may have been
