rosemary and a quick look at the sunday forecast. >> good morning to you. we're talking about that subtle improvement that continues for today. two degrees warmer expected for the inland areas. may still be the best place to be for the afternoon. we're going to remain cool by the coast. we're looking at more sunshine by the afternoon. i'll break it down for you coming up. in overnight news, man died after crashing into a tree in napa. the solo car accident happened before 11:00 last night in the area of coonsville road and fourth avenue. the driver of that red convertible wrapped his car around the tree. chp is investigating, but the crash they say looks like could have been attributed to speeding. they have not released the name, but tell us he was in late 30s. >> neighbors in the area heard acceleration sounds, then the impact. they called it in, and upon the scene, we found that the driver is deceased. >> investigators say there's no investigation that alcohol was a factor in that crash. police do believe alcohol caused a two-vehicle wreck this morning. officers say a truck d-boned a vehicle this morning. emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to pull the people out of civic. one may have suffered major injuries. while the driver was not hurt, he was arrested on drunk driving charges. well preliminary figures show there are more dui-related arrests this memorial day weekend then at the same time last year. the chp golden gate division tweeted there have been 72 arrest compared to 52 in 2011. officers arrested a to have the 218 people on drunk driving charges in last year's memorial day weekend. monday into tuesday. teenage boy was killed after a double shooting in san jose, happened before midnight on the 1600 block of virginia of a when police arrived on scene, they found two men had been shot. one of the victims was a 16- year-old. he died a short time later. the other injuries are not life- threatening. police say the gunmen were able to escape and the shooting is gang-related. happening now, preparations are underway for the golden gate bridge's 75th anniversary celebration. we do have team coverage of this event. ktvu ally is on the side of the bridge with how they are expected to affect traffic. we begin with alex who's on the san francisco side with more on the big event planned for today. hi alex. >> reporter: hey there, you know, this is going to be the epicenter of the celebration today, the golden gate bridge celebrating its 75th birthday. huge crowds expected here along the water front where we are going to give you a look. you can see, there are the tents, stages, everything is set up here in this area. right below the golden gate bridge for what will be a day- long celebration. everything will culminate later today with that big fireworks show that everyone's been talking about. some of those fireworks will be shot right off of the golden gate bridge itself. let's give you an idea of what is in store for the rest of the day. hoar's sort of a run down of event. everything starts at 11:00 today. there will be dancing, music from local bands here at kristy field, and all the way along the water front up to marina green. a boat parade out on the water here that folks will be able to see from the water front area. then of course later on tonight, the big fireworks show that gets going at 9:30 tonight. keep in mind, everything is free admission. tens of thousands of people are expected to turn out here for the 75th celebration of the golden gate bridge. it was 75 years ago today when the bridge first opened up, may 27th, 1937. that's when thousands of people streamed out on to the golden gate bridge. keep in mind, it will be a different story today. today there will be no bridge walk involved in the celebration, and in fact the bridge walkways will start closing at 6:00 tonight in preparation for that fireworks show. and eventually at 9:30 tonight, the bridge will be completely closed to traffic. we're told it will last for about an hour or so. that closure for the fireworks show. here's other stuff to keep in mind, and join in the celebration today, do not drive, take public transit, walk, ride your bike, get here any other way than driving your car. that's the best advice from the organizers here. should be a fun celebration, again everything gets started 11:00 this morning. we are live in san francisco, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. >> getting close to the golden gate today will not be easy. people are indeed being adviced to take public transportation even bike or walking. we are joined live from the county side. ally, folks already making their way to the golden gate there? >> reporter: they are, they're staking out those spots ahead of the celebration to plan for later on tonight. behind us is horseshoe bay, off to the left is the point, if we show you the parking lot, there's a lot of open spaces. don't expect that to last for long. this is one of several spots north of the golden gate bridge expected to get pretty congested as the the afternoon goes on. earlier this morning, we went to one of the overlook spots. it was 5:00 a.m. and there are already a handful of people there. some people say they come out to that area every weekend, amateur photographers, they like to catch the sunrise coming over the bridge, but a couple told us they plan to stay out there all day until the fireworks show tonight. and we asked them what they were expecting this area to be like later on. >> a zoo. complete zoo this morning. and the rest of the day. it's just starting now. anywhere between about 2:00 on it's going to be, forget it, forget about coming down here. if you're not here now. but it'll be worth it. >> definitely, the bridge is definitely going to be unbelievable tonight. the fireworks, yeah, definitely want to see it. >> reporter: now as you heard alex mention, the golden gate bridge will be closed in both directions between 9:00 and 10:00 tonight for that show. keep in mind, some of the roads north of the golden gate bridge, normally that lead to the bridge, they're going to have limited access as well. some other roads are going to be one way and we're told that park rangers in the area are going to be enforcing parking throughout the day. very important if you want to drive out here instead sold. >> 35 terminal substantiates represented by the boatman's union along with other sympathetic employees walked off the job yesterday. they were protesting wages and working conditions. it left riders trying to enjoy the weekend, stranded and frustrated. >> they ought to be lucky they have a job. especially in these times. >> the bridge, it's a beautiful structure. you know, it was all built union labor and we should be celebrating union labor, these investigations has been difficult. >> the bridge district says governor brown is going to appoint a three-member board to investigate the strike claiming it created a significant disruption to public service. sources tell ktvu the union and the district start mediation on tuesday. well there are additional ferris planned for the bridge celebration. extra service beginning at 4:00 tonight. then starting at 10:00 tonight, once again running every half hour until midnight. work crews are dealing with windy conditions on the closed dumbarton bridge, the project is on schedule. workers and engineers have not stumbled into any big problems. yesterday, crews cut the bridge in two to make room for a new steel joint. >> so on this side of the bridge, that joint locks into place in the net work of rebar and concrete. on the other side of the joint, it's meant to expand and contract. >> the $60 million project will nearly double the amount of movement the bridge can handle during an earthquake. it expects to have the bridge by 5:00 a.m. on tuesday. the bridge closure has not really impacted traffic on the main alternate routes. it has indeed been smooth sailing all weekend long in those two areas. >> they've had good weather for all their construction needs as well. of course, if we talk about the weather, we talk about the people headed to kristy's field and to the bridge and to the lots of people out and about today. right? yes, we are going to see more sunshine today. around the bay area, those clouds hanging yesterday, it was a cool day in many areas especially alodge coastline. had to get inland to get the sunshine and the mild weather, it will be a repeat. although even the inland spots waking up with clouds this morning. a live look there, the big anniversary going on today. the big celebration and tonight for the fireworks, we're still looking at partly cloudy skies and we should be able to actually see those fireworks. should be a nice show. your satellite radar, that system that pulled through on friday, lingering moisture behind. again its been tough to clear. that ridge of high pressure over the area for today, a weak one. more sunshine that's going to warm us up a little bit. it's going to dry us out a little bit more. take a look at the clouds this morning. very widespread, they're going to pull back, it looks like by 9:00, 10:00 for our inland areas. it's just inside the bay and around the coast still at about 11:00. by noontime, 1:00, pulling back to the coast, we're here at 3:00 in the afternoon to notice the clouds along the coast. partly to mostly cloudy skies once again. it's sunday evening, 9:00, and notice we are still mostly clear. these clouds will be rolling back in it looks like by 11:00 and midnight. forecast models are now showing us we are going to get a nice view this morning. cool and cloudy this morning. numbers similar to yesterday morning. partly cloudy for the afternoon, slightly warmer and the gradual warm-up is going to continue. we've got nice, warm weather on the way. unfortunately it's not going to get here for the dangerous surf conditions and downpours are expected from northeast florida up through the carolinas. beryl is expected to bring three days worth of thunderstorms after making land fall tonight or tomorrow morning. latest storm scare in mexico is over. tropical depression bud toppled trees, washed out roads, and left a lot of debris out there on the beach. officials found no signs of property damage and no reports of injuries but had threatened southwest mexico with hurricane- force winds, but was downgraded yesterday. seven people were hurt after a house exploded in wisconsin. it happened last night in glenndale which is north of milwaukee. the house was leveled and debris beg your pardon hours. two homes were also damaged. it's not clear what caused that blast. nato air strike killed a family of eight. happened last night in eastern afghanistan. the coalition air strike killed a man, woman, and their six children. the afghans say they were civilians with no connections to the taliban. nato says it is investigating the incident. meanwhile roadside bombs killed four coalition service members. the active police chief is apologizing for his department's action following a deadly confrontation with a homeless man last year. surveillance cameras show officers beating and tasing 37- year-old kelly thomas who was mentally ill. the acting chief telling the orange county register the officers were able to leave this scene without speaking to investigators and they were allowed to right their report at a time later after reviewing the video. he says it compromised or at least damaged the public's trust and confidence in the process. two officers face charges including voluntary manslaughter. sacramento police dog that was shot on duty is home from the hospital. body walked out of the veterinarian hospital friday night. he wore a cast that is expected to stay on for up to eight weeks. suspect the car thief shot him on may 18th. police officers shot back and killed the suspect. >> it's definitely a community effort and he appreciates it and we definitely appreciate it as well. >> this weekend, he's now eating soft food and drinking water on his own. the vet says he expects body will make a full recovery. he'll be back patrolling the streets this summer. official start of the fire season begins tomorrow for much of the bay area. the fire will declare it tomorrows. staffing is going to be increased and burn permits will be suspended because of the potential fire danger. firefighters are also encouraging people to clear brush from around the homes. out of control wild fire covering 150 square miles, forcing evacuations in new mexico. people who live in a privately owned ghost town have been told to leave. unrelenting winds, warm weather, and rugged terrain are making the fire in the hila national forest tough to fight. there is no containment and the smoke from the 100,000-acre fire is prompting health alerts as far away as albuquerque. fire crews have contained as wild fires destroyed two homes near the california border. they got help from rain and cooler weather. it cost $3.4 million to fight the fire. boy and girl scouts are paying their respects this memorial day weekend. they placed flags on each grave site the golden gate national cemetery. it took more than 3,000 scouts about two hours to place the flags on the 11 it thousand grave sites. >> i know it means a lot to me. my brother's buried up here, and my mother and father buried aren't the corner. brings a lot of joy to me. seeing our young men and women come out and honor the veterans. >> they have been placing flags on the saturday before memorial day for more than 50 years. there are several memorial day ceremonies around the bay area tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., there are commemorations at mountain view cemetery in oakland. and the arsenal post cemetery. at 10:30 the parade in san francisco begins. also at 10:30 a remembrance program at oak hill park in danville. at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow there is an observance at the golden gate national cemetery. at 1:00, there will be a memorial day service aboard the uss hornet in alameda. it is an extra special memorial day for two wisconsin children. their parents, u.s. soldiers deployed in afghanistan are back home. travis and his wife didn't tell their families they were coming home. they wanted to surprise their kids. the kids came to the airport thinking they were taking a tour with the boy scouts, travis and his wife will be home for the next two weeks. >> we're just going to go and take it day by day so we don't try to rush things and miss something. we're just going to do whatever happens. >> hug them. over and over. and then i want to show them my room, and i want to bring them to announced changes at the airport that elderly travelers may welcome. passengers 75 years old and older will be able to keep on their shoes and light outer wear such as jackets during screenings. if anything unusual is found they would go through the full body scanner. tsa has been testing the program since march. changes are going to be rolled out to u.s. airports this summer. sky diving grandma is now talking about her near death experience. 80-year-old lavern went sky diving last year. her harness left her dangling in midair. the video has gone viral. she recalls her family's reaction to
