>> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. good morning, it is sunday, may 27th. >> overcast skies for parts of the bay area this morning, let's get over to rosemary and a quick look at the sunday forecast. >> good morning to you. we're talking about that subtle improvement that continues for today. two degrees warmer expected for the inland areas. may still be the best place to be for the afternoon. we're going to remain cool by the coast. we're looking at more sunshine by the afternoon. i'll break it down for you coming up. in overnight news, man died after crashing into a tree in napa. the solo car accident happened before 11:00 last night in the area of coonsville road and fourth avenue. the driver of that red convertible wrapped his car around the tree. chp is investigating, but the crash they say looks like could have been attributed to speeding. they have not released the name, but tell us he was in late 30s. >> neighbors in the area heard acceleration sounds, then the impact. they called it in, and upon the scene, we found that the driver is deceased. >> investigators say there's no investigation that alcohol was a factor in that crash. police do believe alcohol caused a two-vehicle wreck this morning. officers say a truck d-boned a vehicle this morning. emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to pull the people out of civic. one may have suffered major injuries. while the driver was not hurt, he was arrested on drunk driving charges. well preliminary figures show there are more dui-related arrests this memorial day weekend then at the same time last year. the chp golden gate division tweeted there have been 72 arrest compared to 52 in 2011. officers arrested a to have the 218 people on drunk driving charges in last year's memorial day weekend. monday into tuesday. teenage boy was killed after a double shooting in san jose, happened before midnight on the 1600 block of virginia of a when police arrived on scene, they found two men had been shot. one of the victims was a 16- year-old. he died a short time later. the other injuries are not life- threatening. police say the gunmen were able to escape and the shooting is gang-related. happening now, preparations are underway for the golden gate bridge's 75th anniversary celebration. we do have team coverage of this event. ktvu ally is on the side of the bridge with how they are expected to affect traffic. we begin with alex who's on the san francisco side with more on the big event planned for today. hi alex. >> reporter: hey there, you know, this is going to be the epicenter of the celebration today, the golden gate bridge celebrating its 75th birthday. huge crowds expected here along the water front where we are going to give you a look. you can see, there are the tents, stages, everything is set up here in this area. right below the golden gate bridge for what will be a day- long celebration. everything will culminate later today with that big fireworks show that everyone's been talking about. some of those fireworks will be shot right off of the golden gate bridge itself. let's give you an idea of what is in store for the rest of the day. hoar's sort of a run down of event. everything starts at 11:00 today. there will be dancing, music from local bands here at kristy field, and all the way along the water front up to marina green. a boat parade out on the water here that folks will be able to see from the water front area. then of course later on tonight, the big fireworks show that gets going at 9:30 tonight. keep in mind, everything is free admission. tens of thousands of people are expected to turn out here for the 75th celebration of the golden gate bridge. it was 75 years ago today when the bridge first opened up, may 27th, 1937. that's when thousands of people streamed out on to the golden gate bridge. keep in mind, it will be a different story today. today there will be no bridge walk involved in the celebration, and in fact the bridge walkways will start closing at 6:00 tonight in preparation for that fireworks show. and eventually at 9:30 tonight, the bridge will be completely closed to traffic. we're told it will last for about an hour or so. that closure for the fireworks show. here's other stuff to keep in mind, and join in the celebration today, do not drive, take public transit, walk, ride your bike, get here any other way than driving your car. that's the best advice from the organizers here. should be a fun celebration, again everything gets started 11:00 this morning. we are live in san francisco, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. >> getting close to the golden gate today will not be easy. people are indeed being adviced to take public transportation even bike or walking. we are joined live from the county side. ally, folks already making their way to the golden gate there? >> reporter: they are, they're staking out those spots ahead of the celebration to plan for later on tonight. behind us is horseshoe bay, off to the left is the point, if we show you the parking lot, there's a lot of open spaces. don't expect that to last for long. this is one of several spots north of the golden gate bridge expected to get pretty congested as the the afternoon goes on. earlier this morning, we went to one of the overlook spots. it was 5:00 a.m. and there are already a handful of people there. some people say they come out to that area every weekend, amateur photographers, they like to catch the sunrise coming over the bridge, but a couple told us they plan to stay out there all day until the fireworks show tonight. and we asked them what they were expecting this area to be like later on. >> a zoo. complete zoo this morning. and the rest of the day. it's just starting now. anywhere between about 2:00 on it's going to be, forget it, forget about coming down here. if you're not here now. but it'll be worth it. >> definitely, the bridge is definitely going to be unbelievable tonight. the fireworks, yeah, definitely want to see it. >> reporter: now as you heard alex mention, the golden gate bridge will be closed in both directions between 9:00 and 10:00 tonight for that show. keep in mind, some of the roads north of the golden gate bridge, normally that lead to the bridge, they're going to have limited access as well. some other roads are going to be one way and we're told that park rangers in the area are going to be enforcing parking throughout the day. very important if you want to drive out here instead iconic span. click on the golden gate at 75 tab. ferry service resumes later this morning after a surprise one-day strike by some workers. >> i don't know what i've been told, golden gate just got sold. >> 35 terminal substantiates represented by the boatman's union along with other sympathetic employees walked off the job yesterday. they were protesting wages and working conditions. it left riders trying to enjoy the weekend, stranded and frustrated. >> they ought to be lucky they have a job. especially in these times. >> the bridge, it's a beautiful structure. you know, it was all built union labor and we should be celebrating union labor, these investigations has been difficult. >> the bridge district says governor brown is going to appoint a three-member board to investigate the strike claiming it created a significant disruption to public service. sources tell ktvu the union and the district start mediation on tuesday. well there are additional ferris planned for the bridge celebration. extra service beginning at 4:00 tonight. then starting at 10:00 tonight, once again running every half hour until midnight. work crews are dealing with windy conditions on the closed dumbarton bridge, the project is on schedule. workers and engineers have not stumbled into any big problems. yesterday, crews cut the bridge in two to make room for a new steel joint. >> so on this side of the bridge, that joint locks into place in the net work of rebar and concrete. on the other side of the joint, it's meant to expand and contract. >> the $60 million project will nearly double the amount of movement the bridge can handle during an earthquake. it expects to have the bridge by 5:00 a.m. on tuesday. the bridge closure has not really impacted traffic on the main alternate routes. it has indeed been smooth sailing all weekend long in those two areas. >> they've had good weather for all their construction needs as well. of course, if we talk about the weather, we talk about the people headed to kristy's field and to the bridge and to the lots of people out and about today. right? yes, we are going to see more sunshine today. around the bay area, those clouds hanging yesterday, it was a cool day in many areas especially alodge coastline. had to get inland to get the sunshine and the mild weather, it will be a repeat. although even the inland spots waking up with clouds this morning. a live look there, the big anniversary going on today. the big celebration and tonight for the fireworks, we're still looking at partly cloudy skies and we should be able to actually see those fireworks. should be a nice show. your satellite radar, that system that pulled through on friday, lingering moisture behind. again its been tough to clear. that ridge of high pressure over the area for today, a weak one. more sunshine that's going to warm us up a little bit. it's going to dry us out a little bit more. take a look at the clouds this morning. very widespread, they're going to pull back, it looks like by 9:00, 10:00 for our inland areas. it's just inside the bay and around the coast still at about 11:00. by noontime, 1:00, pulling back to the coast, we're here at 3:00 in the afternoon to notice the clouds along the coast. partly to mostly cloudy skies once again. it's sunday evening, 9:00, and notice we are still mostly clear. these clouds will be rolling back in it looks like by 11:00 and midnight. forecast models are now showing us we are going to get a nice view this morning. cool and cloudy this morning. numbers similar to yesterday morning. partly cloudy for the afternoon, slightly warmer and the gradual warm-up is going to continue. we've got nice, warm weather on the way. unfortunately it's not going to get here for the tomorrow morning. latest storm scare in mexico is over. tropical depression bud toppled trees, washed out roads, and left a lot of debris out there on the beach. officials found no signs of property damage and no reports of injuries but had threatened southwest mexico with hurricane- force winds, but was downgraded yesterday. seven people were hurt after a house exploded in wisconsin. it happened last night in glenndale which is north of milwaukee. the house was leveled and debris beg your pardon hours. two homes were also damaged. it's not clear what caused that blast. nato air strike killed a family of eight. happened last night in eastern afghanistan. the coalition air strike killed a man, woman, and their six children. the afghans say they were civilians with no connections to the taliban. nato says it is investigating the incident. meanwhile roadside bombs killed four coalition service members. the active police chief is apologizing for his department's action following a deadly confrontation with a homeless man last year. surveillance cameras show officers beating and tasing 37- year-old kelly thomas who was mentally ill. the acting chief telling the orange county register the officers were able to leave this scene without speaking to investigators and they were allowed to right their report at a time later after reviewing the video. he says it compromised or at least damaged the public's trust and confidence in the process. two officers face charges including voluntary manslaughter. sacramento police dog that was shot on duty is home from the hospital. body walked out of the veterinarian hospital friday night. he wore a cast that is expected to stay on for up to eight weeks. suspect the car thief shot him on may 18th. police officers shot back and killed the suspect. >> it's definitely a community effort and he appreciates it and we definitely appreciate it as well. >> this weekend, he's now eating soft food and drinking water on his own. the vet says he expects body will make a full recovery. he'll be back patrolling the streets this summer. official start of the fire season begins tomorrow for much of the bay area. the fire will declare it tomorrows. staffing is going to be increased and burn permits will be suspended because of the potential fire danger. firefighters are also encouraging people to clear brush from around the homes. out of control wild fire covering 150 square miles, forcing evacuations in new mexico. people who live in a privately owned ghost town have been told to leave. unrelenting winds, warm weather, and rugged terrain are making the fire in the hila national forest tough to fight. there is no containment and the smoke from the 100,000-acre fire is prompting health alerts as far away as albuquerque. fire crews have contained as wild fires destroyed two homes near the california border. they got help from rain and cooler weather. it cost $3.4 million to fight the fire. boy and girl scouts are paying their respects this memorial day weekend. they placed flags on each grave site the golden gate national cemetery. it took more than 3,000 scouts about two hours to place the flags on the 11 it thousand grave sites. >> i know it means a lot to me. my brother's buried up here, and my mother and father buried aren't the corner. brings a lot of joy to me. seeing our young men and women come out and honor the veterans. >> they have been placing flags on the saturday before memorial day for more than 50 years. there are several memorial day ceremonies around the bay area tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., there are commemorations at mountain view cemetery in oakland. and the arsenal post cemetery. at 10:30 the parade in san francisco begins. also at 10:30 a remembrance program at oak hill park in danville. at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow there is an observance at the golden gate national cemetery. at 1:00, there will be a memorial day service aboard the uss hornet in alameda. it is an extra special memorial day for two wisconsin children. their parents, u.s. soldiers deployed in afghanistan are back home. travis and his wife didn't tell their families they were coming home. they wanted to surprise their kids. the kids came to the airport thinking they were taking a tour with the boy scouts, travis and his wife will be home for the next two weeks. >> we're just going to go and take it day by day so we don't try to rush things and miss something. we're just going to do whatever happens. >> hug them. over and over. and then i want to show them my room, and i want to bring them to announced changes at the airport that elderly travelers may welcome. passengers 75 years old and older will be able to keep on their shoes and light outer wear such as jackets during screenings. if anything unusual is found they would go through the full body scanner. tsa has been testing the program since march. changes are going to be rolled out to u.s. airports this summer. sky diving grandma is now talking about her near death experience. 80-year-old lavern went sky diving last year. her harness left her dangling in midair. the video has gone viral. she recalls her family's reaction to her decision to jump and what happened next. >> i thought i was very brave, but it's just something i've wanted to do for a long time. once you get on that edge, that's another story. upper harness came off, it slipped down. >> she says her shirt flew up and she couldn't see a thing. she didn't realize exactly what happened until she saw this video. and as the faa investigates, she hopes to getting out the farmer's market this morning could be chillily. chill in the air outside your door. by lunchtime, partly to mostly cloudy skies. inland locationally sunny, midup toker 60s in your forecast for lunch. meanwhile around the bay, partly cloudy and along the coast, still mostly gray and cool. you're exteed recast there, for today, couple degrees of warming expected around the bay area. close to five degrees or so for inland spots. notice the trend, it's a gradual warm-up then a robust one by wednesday, thursday, so i'm pretty inland areas mid to upper 80s in the forecast. on her 75th 75th anniversary. thousands of people are expected to celebrate the golden gate bridge. we'll tell you about everything that is planned for today. 75 years later, the golden gate bridge is celebrating a very special anniversary, the party comes complete with a festival, fireworks show, and yes, lots of traffic. welcome back to mornings on 2. >> it is expected to be a very busy day for the golden gate bridge as clouds flock to the landmark to celebrate the 75th 75th anniversary. huge festival is being held at kristy field starting at 11:00 this morning. alex savage live in the city for us on this cool sunday morning, alex. >> reporter: well good morning, yes, and the set-up for that huge celebration later on today is already going on here. they are all set along the water front. you can see they have the stage here, they have tents and all sorts of stuff for what will be a day long celebration. bands, boat parade as well here as we pan around and there will also be history tents here as well. where you can learn some of the history of this iconic span. you can learn about engineering that was involved here, construction began back in 1933 this were then opening day, may 27th, 1937, that's when huge crowds, couple thousand people walked out on to the golden gate bridge to celebrate the opening of this span. of course the same thing happened as well on the 50th 50th anniversary celebration of the golden gate bridge as well. people walked out on to the span, the bridge swayed o somewhat and there was some concern there. but as far as today's 75th 75th anniversary celebration, organizers say, the golden gate will not be packed with people today. >> there will not be a bridge walk like there was in the 50 50th, and there'll be, you know, i would expect several hundred thousand people down here on kristy field. and it goes all the way from fort point to fort mason down to the square. pier 39, everyone in the city is really getting on board and participating in this anniversary. >> reporter: now the walkways on the bridge will be open during date. if you want to take a stroll across the golden gate you can do that date. they will close starting at 6:00 tonight in preparation for the big fireworks show. the bridge will completely close to traffic starting at 9:30 for one hour. and if you want to take part in fact brake, the best bet is do not drive. you want to take public transit, you want to walk, you want to bike to get down there. there will be incredible traffic throughout the day. best advice from organizers, don't drive to get here, the celebration starts here along the water front in san francisco. 11:00 today, and it will be going throughout the night culminating with that big firework's show. fireworks being set off from on top of the golden gate bridge. we are live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> bridge will be closed from 9:00 tonight to 10:00 for that firework's show. sidewalks will be closed at 6:00 p.m. and will remain open after, they will open after that fireworks show. the bridge will be closed from 9:00 a.m. to midnight. no parking in the prosiddio. ally will have more on the closures and traffic already making its way towards the golden gate coming up in the next 30 minutes. bridge's 75th won't be anything like the 50th. on may 24th, 1987 the weight of 300,000 pedestrians walking across the bridge caused the bridges arc to sag seven feet. as scary as it sounds, and i was on the bridge, it was scary. engineers said the bridge was not in danger of collapses. bridge officials say however they are not going to let pedestrians take over today. and that is to avoid threats of overcrowding and terrorism. plan to init will stall suicide barriers on the golden gate bridge could be getting a boost. the district wants to install a $50 million barrier but has only raised $5 million for the project. senator barber boxer is now proposing a plan that would allow local agencies to use funds to pay for suicide prevention systems on landmarks. officials say more than 1500 people have committed suicide off the golden gate bridge. new report is raising safety concerns about the new eastern span of the bay bridge. the sacramento b examined the records and found errors in test reports. according to the b, the documents revealed concrete in the towers foundation was not tested properly. the report also raises questions about whether the tower would be able to withstand a big eric. caltrans says the bridge is safe and expects to open the new span on labor day weekend 2013. today, family and friends of slain nursing student michelle le will gather to market first anniversary of her disappearance. the 26-year-old nursing student went missing on may 27th of last year. her body was discovered four months later. former friend of le is charged with her murder. the memorial individual system set to begin at 6:00 p.m. at the park on west tennesseeson road. on tuesday, santa clara bruno at about 1:45 yesterday morning. police said an officer pulled over a car with three men, when they stopped, the men got out and ran away. one of the suspects shot at the officer. he was not hit. he did return fire. two of the three suspects were caught shortly after, the third suspect was tracked down hours later. we have an update now to an occupy protest against the oakland police department. >> under attack, what do but we do -- >> on friday night, more than 100 demonstrators marched through the city an unidentified man was arrested on felony vandalism charges. he cracked a window on webster street. it's a place frequented by off- duty officers. suicidal man who drowned in alameda will be remembered tonight. raymond zack walked out into the water last memorial day. firefighters were there, but did not try to rescue him because they say they did not have proper water rescue training. a group of people gathered to remember zack. they plan to return tonight to throw flowers into the water just off the shore. >> it's unspeak to believe me what happened. it's unspeakable to me the city's response. >> alameda has now restored rescue boats that were lost. zack's brother and sister have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and county of alameda. this morning a search to find a car that rolled into the water will continue. firefighters will call to due little drive around 3:45 yesterday afternoon. the driver was able to get out and firefighters say she suffered only minor injuries. search for the car was suspended last night. >> our guests -- guess right now is she may have been taking the turn too fast and overcompensated when she realized she was going over the double yellow line. >> she was the only person in that car she told police. more coast guard boats out in the san francisco bay this holiday weekend. the coast guard says there haven't been any major problems, but it fog rolls in or wind kicks up, sailers could run into trouble. pay attention, wear life vests and don't overload guests with too many guests. >> most of the problems will arise from people who haven't been on the water since last summer or in a couple of years. >> 12 coast guard police and fire boats will all be patrolling all weekend to make sure boaters are following the rules. one of my favorite spots on the water to see the golden gate bridge, i bet it's going to be packed tonight because the fireworks show is straight right between angel island and timber. heat-up is getting hot, but tonight going to be cool though. >> yes, definitely. >> the water, or the lake. >> absolutely. we've got partly cloudy skies, some of the latest models now bringing the fog in sooner. so perhaps from the north bay may be your best bet of seeing the fireworks. we wake this morning all across the bay. a live look there at oakland and you can see not a lot of sunshine. it's hard to find that sunshine around the bay area. we will see the clearing, but how long is it going to last? giving you a look at trend going on. we are continuing with the minor warm-up. may not feel like it in some spots especially along the coast and around the bay where the clouds have been holding tough this weekend. not really feeling that warmth. but inland, we are looking at the numbers continuing to climb. we'll see a bigger warm-up as we get into midweek. for the next few days, just subtle changes in the forecast. here it is, 7:00 this morning, notice how widespread it is by about 11:00 the inland areas have closed off pretty good. east bay still dealing with cloudy skies and along the coastline. by 1:00, the east bay is dealing with partly cloudy, mostly sunny skies. still hanging off the coastline. partly cloudy, mostly cloudy day for the coast. now, the models want to bring the low clouds back by about 9:00. that's when we are anticipating those fireworks, right? earlier models had held off until about midnight. we'll be tracking this for you. make sure you tune in for the afternoon at newscast with mark. patchy fog this morning, cool conditions if you're getting throughout going to be celebrating all day long, it's going to be a partly cloudy breezy cool day. low 60s expected for the afternoon in san francisco. partly cloudy skies if the models hold firm. very similar to how we woke up yesterday within a few degrees for most cases. cool start. low 50s right around the bay area, san francisco, oakland. afternoon highs for today, slightly warmer. 70 degrees or so, 72 is what we felt over napa yesterday. today it's going to be 74. oakland down into the frommont. 71 expected for pleasantton. along the peninsula, similar to what we saw yesterday, mid mid to upper 60s. we are looking at more sunshine for the afternoon today. gradual warm-up will continue for your memorial day monday. and then as we get into wednesday, thursday, the more notable warm-up expected. mid to upper 80s in the forecast for the inland areas and for the coast, upper 60s low 70s. i'll have your 80s forecast coming up. the uss iowa is on its way to its new home in southern california. the battleship left richmond yesterday afternoon and passed right under the golden gate bridge at about 2:30. the iowa was one of four great american battleships from world war ii era. it moved president franklin roosevelt across the atlantic in 1943 and served in combat during the korean war. the iowa was reactivated during the reagan administration and served in the persian gulf. >> i grew up on this ship. it was a big part of my life. i made a lot of close, good friends on this ship. brothers. >> out my long and distinguished naval career, best five and a half years i spent. >> during a training exercise in 1989, an explosion killed 47 sailors. of it the worst peace-time loss of life ever suffered by the u.s. navy. the iowa will now become a museum at the pacific battleship center in los angeles. real life riveters were honored this memorial day weekend. the home front national historical park in richmond opened a newly restored visitor center yesterday which pays tribute to the packly workers of world war ii. it features the riveter poster which introlized strength of american women who took on male jobs. parking, car rentals, and hotels. the measure on the june ballot that could make them all a event planned for today, alex. >> reporter: and it will be a day long celebration here on the water front. right below the beautiful golden gate bridge, the 75th 75th anniversary celebration will happen here, everything kicks off at 11:00 today. music, dancing, food, and you get to learn a lot of the history about how this iconic span was built and about the rivets, the million plus rivets that hold together the golden gate bridge. i want to bring in vern nestler. you're a welding professor, iron worker by trade, this is one of the demonstrations that's going to happen later on today. something the folks can take part in. is learning about what's called the hot rivet process. you want to show thus process here, vern? >> first of all, take this rivet, and it's a manufactured head, every size rift, it was available 100 years ago, you can still buy them by the ton if you want. take this rivet, they'll go anywhere from five and a half inch up to inch and a half to two inches in diameter. >> reporter: does it happen over and over building the golden gate. >> heat it up to 1900 degrees, and put it in here. and then with a holder on, got to remember, this is hot. then you have this holder on. put it, put it back here, and turn the air on hold it in tight. then with the rivet hammer, it hammers that and forms the second head. >> reporter: then after that, the rivet's not point, and then if you turn it around, this is fort baker behind us. you can see the parking lot here is pretty empty, but that may not be the case for long. i talked to a park rangers with the golden gate recreation area, he says this area and all the public parking lots north of the golden gate bridge will remain open until the lots fill up. now some people got to the headlands as early as 5:00 this morning to claim a parking spot and camp out until tonight's celebration. once all these designated parking lots fill up. park rangers will start to restrict vehicle access in the recklation area. and that's exactly why some people told us they got an early start. staking out a prime viewing spot for tonight's display off the golden gate bridge. >> yesterday, we drove over to kind of scope it out a little bit and decided we would come over with our little camp they are morning and leave it here all day and bike over tonight around 8 8:00. >> decided to throw a party and they don't want anybody to come with a car, which is obvious. it'll be fun. >> reporter: boats will be patrolling bait throughout the weekend. especially tonight hoping to regulate some of the expected boat traffic beneath and around the golden gate bridge after that fireworks display. south of the bridge, as alex mentioned, there are a lot more vehicle restrictions. if you take back out live, you're looking at the prisidio, an hour from now, it will be completely closed to vehicle traffic for the rest of the day. so the message is, if you want to come and watch this fireworks display anywhere in later this morning after a surprise one-day strike by some workers. >> i don't know but i've been told golden gate just -- [ indiscernible ] >> 35 terminal assistants represented by the inland boatman's union along with other employees walked off the job yesterday. they protested wages and working conditions. that walkout left ferry riders trying to enjoy the weekend stranded and frustrated. >> they ought to be lucky they have a job. especially in these times. >> it's a beautiful structure. it was all built union labor and we should be celebrating union labor, these negotiations for our coalition as well as the folks has been difficult. >> welt golden gate bridge district says governor brown is going to appoint a three-member board to investigation the strike claiming it created a significant disruption to public service. sources tell ktvu the union and the district start mediation on tuesday. well there are additional ferries planned for tonight's celebration. extra service beginning at 4:00 tonight. ferry will run every half hour until 8:00 p.m. then start agent 10 tonight, ferries will once again run every half hour until midnight. overnight news, teenage boy was killed after a double shooting in san jose. it happened just before midnight on the 1600 block of virginia avenue. when police arrived, they found two men had been shot. one of the victims was a 16- year-old. he died a short time later. the other victim's injuries are not life-threatening. police say the gunmen were able to escape and the shooting is gang-related. in napa a man died after crashing into a tree. that accident happened before 11:00 last night in the area of coonsville road and fourth avenue. the driver of that red convertible wrapped his car around that tree as you can see. chp is still investigating the crash, but say the motorist was probably speeding. they have not released the name but he was in his late 30s. >> neighbors in the area heard acceleration sounds, then they heard the impact. they called it in, and upon investigation, we came out and found that the driver is deceased. >> investigators say there's no indication that alcohol was a factor in that crash. however, police alcohol was the responsible for a two-vehicle wreck early this morning there. a truck t-boned around 3:30:00 a.m. emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to pull two women out of the civic. police say one may have suffered major injuries. now the driver of the truck wasn't hurt, but he was arrested on drunk driving charges. workers are dealing with some windy conditions on the closed dumbarton bring, even though the seismic project is on schedule. workers and edge fleece not stumbled into any big problems. yesterday crews cut the bridge in two to make room for a new steel joint. >> so on this side of the bridge, that joint locks into place in the network of rebar and concrete. on the other side of the joint, it's meant to expand and carolinas. beryl is expected to bring three days worth of thunderstorms after making land fall tonight or tomorrow morning. people across kansas are cleaning up after tornadoes there. several buildings and homes were destroyed or challenge those twisters touched down on friday. there are reports that at least five tornadoes touched down in the county. power lain lines were knocked down on basement. >> it scared me. i've never been that scared in my life. but, now it's the fun part of cleaning up. >> one woman suffered minor injuries, but no one was seriously hurt. seven people including two police officers were hurt after a house exploded in wisconsin. it happened last night in glenndale just north of milwaukee. the house was leveled and the debris burned for hours. two homes next door were damaged. it's not clear what caused this blast. u.s. military and nato now say that two air strikes mistakingly killed civilians in eastern afghanistan. the afghan government says the strikes killed a family of eight people, a man, woman, and their six children. the afghans say they were civilians with no connections to the taliban. nato says it is investigating the incident. meanwhile roadside bombs killed four coalition service members. the acting police chief floridaton is apologizing for his department's actions following a deadly confrontation with a homeless man last year. surveillance cameras show officers beating and tasing 37- year-old kelly thomas who authorities say is mentally ill. the acting chief telling the reg stet officers were able to leave the scene without speaking to investigators and they were allowed to write their report at a later time after reviewing the video. it compromised or at least damaged the public east trust and confidence in the process. two officers do face charges including voluntary manslaughter. sacramento police dog that was shot on duty is home from the hospital. body walked out a veterinary hospital friday night. he to clear brush from around their homes. out of control wild fire covering 150 square miles is forcing evacuations in the state of new mexico. people who live in a privately- owned ghost town have been told to leave. unrelenting winds, warm weather, and rugged terrain are making the fire in the hila national forest tough to fight. there is no containment at this time. the smoke from the 100,000-acre fire is prompting health alerts as far away as albuquerque. a nevada fire is contained. they had help from rain and cooler temperatures. the fire in the pine nut mountains burned 7500 acres since it broke out on tuesday. it has caused $3.4 million to fight that fire. the sky diving grandma is talking about her near death experience. check out 80-year-old lavern everett. she went sky diving last year. she had problems with her harness that caused her to slip out. that video was recently posted on youtube and has now gone viral. everett says her family's reaction to her decision was she and construction national and the visionary who first dreamed then built it into being. well it is an extra special memorial day for two wisconsin children. their parents are both u.s. soldiers, both deployed in afghanistan, but both are now back home. travis and his wife did not tell their family they were coming home. they wanted to surprise their two kids as you can see, they did. the kids came to the airport thinking they were taking a tour with the boy scouts. travis and his wife will be home for the next two weeks. >> we're just going to go and take it day by day. so we don't try to rush area and all of the public parking lots north of the golden gate bridge will remain open until the lots get too full. once all the designated spots fill up, park rangers will restrict vehicle access in the golden gate national recreation area. that's why some people said they wanted to get an early start. >> yesterday we scoped it out label the and decided we would come over with the camper this morning and bike over tonight around 8:00. >> reporter: coast guard and police boats will be patrolling the bay. however people won't be able to take their boats under the bridge. once the fireworks are over, the coast guard expected they will have to regulate a lot of boat traffic here. >> biggest problems we expect are not during the event but probably after the event when we release the zone and all the boaters that happen to be on the water now want to go home or want to go to their respective mooring somewhere. that's probably when we'll see the most problems. >> reporter: and there are areas where you won't be able to drive your car at all. you're looking at the prisidio, starting at 9:00 this morning, half hour from now, all vehicle traffic will be restricted in that area. again, north of the golden gate bridge and the golden gate national recreation area, they will be open to traffic until the lots get too full. then they'll turn people away. live in marine county, ktvu channel 2 news. >> bridge's 75th won't be like the 50th. if you remember back to 198 , this was the scene then with the weight of 300,000 pedestrians walking across that bridge. which actually caused the bridge's arc to sag seven feet. engineers said the bridge wasn't in danger of collapsing. bridge officials say however they're not going to led pedestrians take over today. and that is to avoid threats of overcrowding and terrorism. plan to install a suicide barrier on the golden gate bridge could be getting a boost. the bridge district wants to install $50 million barrier, has only raised $5 million for the project. senator barber boxer is proposing a plan that would allow agencies to use federal transportation funds to pay for the suicide prevention systems on landmarks. officials say more than 1500 people have committed suicide on the golden gate bridge. a new report is raising safety concerns about the new eastern span of the bay bridge. the sacramento b examined caltrans' records and found errors in test reports. according to the b, the documents revealed concrete in the towers foundation was not properly tested. report also raises questions about whether the tower would be able to withstand a big earthquake. caltrans says the bridge is safe and expects to open the new span on labor day weekend 2013. three men are under arrest after leading authorities on a chase from concord. starting around 9:15 last night. police say officers tried to stop a stolen car, but the driver took off. officers chased that car on to highway 242, interstate 680, then highway 24. the chp took over the chase through the tunnel and it ended when he tried to make a u turn and crashed into a wall. the driver and two passengers were arrested. no one else was hurt. family and friends of michelle le le gather tonight to market first anniversary of her disappear. the 26-year-old nursing student went missing may 27th of last year. her body was discovered four months later. former friend of le is charged with her murder. the memorial individual system set to begin at 6:00 tonight at mount eden park on west tennesseeson road. on tuesday the santa collar a county sheriff's dive team will conduct a search in the morgan hill area. they are looking for any sign of sierra lamar. police believe she is dead and have charged 21-year-old garcia- torres with kidnapping and murder. a volunteer search effort resumes wednesday morning. we have an update to an occupy protest against the oakland police department. on friday night, more than 100 demonstrators marched through the city. unidentified man was arrested on felony vandalism charges. police say he cracked a window at the warehouse bar on webster street. and that is a place frequented by off-duty officers. this morning a search to find a car that rolled into the water near the airport will continue. firefighters were called outed to road around 3:45 yesterday afternoon. the driver was able to get out of the car on her own and firefighters say she suffered only minor injuries. search for the car was suspended last night. >> our guess right now is that she may have been trying to take the turn a little too fast and overcompensated. she realized she was going over the double yellow line. >> the driver told police she was the only person inside that car. suicidal man who drowned at crown beach is going to be remembered tonight. 53-year-old raymond zack walked out into the water last memorial day. firefighters were there, but didn't try to rescue zack because they said chez didn't have the proper water rescue training. a group of people gathered at crown beach yesterday afternoon afternoon to remember zack and they are planning on returning to the beach tonight to throw flowers into the water just off the shore. >> it's unspeak to believe me what happened. it's unspeak to believe me that city's response. >> alameda has restored rescue boats and procedures that were lost to budget cuts. zack's brother and sister have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and county of alameda. there are more than coast guard boats out in the san francisco bay that this holiday weekend. the coast guard says so far there have not been any major problems but it fog rolls in, sailors could run into trouble. coast guard is reminding people to pay attention to the surroundings, wear life vests, and weather in the forecast for the afternoon. four people were killed after a small plane crashed in utah. it happened early yesterday morning at st. george municipal airport. the plane was not discovered until airport employees began arriving to work. the plane was found about 300 feet from the runway. investigators still not determined if the plane crashed after takeoff or while landing. bus driver in utah is in jail after failing a sobriety fest after he was about to take students to disneyland. parents said athletes -- asked them to bring canine units to check the student's bags. the driver seemed suspicious and tried to sneak off the bus. he did not get far. police say he not only failed, they found drugs, and what is believed to be cocaine in his bag. fbi is skeptical that this man, pedro hernandez killed etan patz back in 1979. hernandez confessed to the murder last week. he is now on suicide watch at manhattan's bellview hospital. fbi agents do not believe hernandez because of his history of mental problems. investigators who reviewed his confession say there are inconsistencies in his story which do undermind his cent. syrian government is denying any involvement in a bloody assault on villages. mourners held a mass puerile for 92 victims. government opposition groups say 32 of them were children under the age of 10. residential areas were hit by pressure is always on when we have fireworks. >> you're right. mostly cloudy skies, peeling away to mostly sunny skies by the afternoon, but looks like the low clouds and fog will be back for this evening. we are looking at a slight warm- up for your afternoon. look at those numbers and we'll show you the fog forecast coming up. in overnight news, a teenage boy became san jose's 16th homicide victim of the year. the double shooting happened just before midnight on the 1600 block of virginia avenue. when police arrived on scene, they found two men who had been shot. one of the victims was a 16- year-old. he died a short time later. the other victim's injuries are not life threatening. police say the gunmen were able to escape, and that the shooting is gang-related. >> also overnight, a man died after crashing into a tree in napa. the solo car accident happened just before 11:00 last night near fourth avenue. the driver of that red convertible as you can see, wrapped his car around that tree, and the c.h.p. is still investigating, but say the motorist was probably speeding. they haven't released the driver's name but say he was in his late 30s. >> n.b.a.ers in the area heard -- neighbors in the area heard acceleration sounds and then heard the impact. they called it in and upon investigation, we confirmed that the driver is deceased. >> investigators say there's no indication that alcohol was a factor in that crash. san leandro police believe alcohol was a factor in a crash there that caused a two vehicle wreck early this morning. officers say the truck t-boned a honda civic at 880 and david street all around 330 this morning. emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to pull two women out of the civic. police say one of them may have suffered major injuries. the driver of the truck wasn't hurt but he was arrested on drunk driving charges. reparations are well under way this morning for golden gate bridge's 75th anniversary. 10s of thousands of people are expected to celebrate in just a couple of hours. we have live team coverage beginning with ktvus alex savage at chrissy field. >> reporter: and work crews very busy this morning, mike. i can tell you that much. they're getting the water front all set up for what promises to be a day long celebration in this area. the perfect vantage point for the culmination of the celebration, the fireworks show. before the fireworks begin at 9:30, you can take in these interesting exhibits where you can learn about the history of the golden gate bridge and how it was put together. this exhibit here they'll show you about the rivetting process, if rivets that hold together the bridge. 10 of thousands of people expected to be on hand here later today to celebrate the 75th anniversary. 75 years ago today, is when the golden gate bridge opened up. an engineering marvel. construction started in 1933. may 27, 19 37s is when crowds floed onto the bridge to celebrate. bear in mind, unlike when it first opened 75 years ago, there will not be a bridge walk involved. the public won't be allowed to walk out onto the bridge later today. earlier this morning we watched as people arrived here trying to stake out spots for the fireworks show later tonight. we actually ran into some focus who were here 25 years ago when the golden gate turned 50. >> we did this 25 years ago, and we thought we want to create that memory again. you know, so we just decided to get out. >> it's exciting just to be here. i love this place. i love san francisco, love the golden gate bridge. everything. just really a lot of enthusiasm, and people are really happy about it, and so am i. >> so here's the rundown of some of the events that will be taking place today. everything will get going at 11:00 today. there will be music, there will be dancing, local bands will be playing all up and down the water front from chrissy field to marina green. there will also be a boat parade on the water as well. then 9:30 tonight, the big fireworks show. keep in mind, admission is free for everyone, but you also, you want to make sure you don't drive down here. the organizers are urging everyone to take some form of public transportation, bike, or walk, to get down here. that's the best way to approach the event today. but it should be a fun celebration, but certainly, they are expecting large crowds and lots of traffic in this area. i also want to let you know there's another vantage point to take in the celebration today. that's the north side of the golden gate bridge and that's where my colleague allie rasmus is right now with that part of the story. >> reporter: hey, alex. thanks for that. we know as you mentioned there will be thousands of people at chrissy field, but when i talked to a representative from the golden gate national recreation area this morning, he says they are expecting thousands of people to come to one of these vantage points north of the golden gate bridge. we're right now at fort baker. you can see the parking lot has filled quite a bit since we got here at 6:00 this morning. you can see some people have set up some mats and tri pods, they're cooking and making food preparing to camp out here 12 hours ahead of tonight's fireworks celebration. there's campers out here, not only in this parking lot right next to us but also across the water from us. some people have set up grills already and blankets. they wanted to get a good spot they said because they know how crowded it's going to be here later on today. >> we want to take pictures tonight. so we wanted to be here so that we can get the fireworks coming off the bridge and all of that. so, we figured we're not going to be able to get down here later on because of the traffic. >> reporter: and it was a similar story at the marin headlands. some people were there as early as 5:00 this morning claiming a parking spot. golden gate park rangers tell us once all of the spaces in the marin head lands fill up they will make this a one way road and direct all the overflow cars back downhill. parking will be very restricted in the marin headlands. also restrictions for people taking boats onto the bay. the coast guard is patrolling water all weekend long and during the fireworks display from 9 to 10 tonight when the bridge is closed boats will not be allowed to pass underneath the bridge. when it comes to parking in one of these north bay vantage points, technically all these spots are open to the public and it will remain open to the public throughout the day. but g.g.n.r.a. says once the parking lots get too full, they will start restricting vehicle access. the message is if you don't want to get out here early, we're talking 10, 12 hours ahead of time, be prepared to take your bike or walk out here to one of these north bay vantage points. live in marin county, allie rasmus, ktvu. >> and the bridge will be closed from 9 to 10:00 tonight for the fireworks show. sidewalks will be closed starting at 6 p.m. and will reopen after the fireworks. the presid ohio will be closed until midnight and there will be no parking in the presidio chrissy field or the marina built union labor, and we should be celebrating union labor. but these negotiations for our coalition as well as for our folks have been very difficult. >> the golden gate bridge district says governor brown is going to appoint a three-member board to investigate the strike, claiming it created a significant disruption to public service. sources tell ktvu the union and the district start mediation on tuesday. now, there will be additional ferries planned tonight. extra service begins at 4:00 tonight and ferries will run every half hour until 8 p.m. starting at 10 tonight, ferries will once again run every half hour and that will go till midnight. work crews have been dealing with windy conditions on the closed dunbarton bridge. even so the seismic retro fit project is on schedule. workers and engineers have not really stumbled into any big problems. yesterday crews actually cut the bridge in two to make room for a new steel joint. >> next up is putting in the steel support plates that are going to create the basis for that joint. and then starting to install the rebar and welding, do welding for that. >> the $60 million project will nearly double the amount of movement the bridge can handle during an earthquake. cal trans says it expects to have the bridge open by 5 a.m. on tuesday. the bridge closure really hasn't hurt traffic on the main alternate route. the san mateo bridge to the north or highway -- 237 to the south, it has been smooth sailing all weekend. good morning to you. we have a slight warm-up in store for the afternoon. a live look here from san jose, i will told, mostly gray skies, it's a little tough to tell when all you see gray out there. you have to get up above about 3000 feet to have that blue sky. this is going to peel off, burn off. santa rosa has turned mostly sunny in the last hour or so in the inland areas we'll see that sunshine first. the last will be along the coast. satellite radar here, a weak ridge of high pressure. hmm. not so easy for me to say is overhead. we have this system that pushed off to the east but leaving behind enough moisture to really continue the clouds out there this morning. yesterday a little bit tough to burn off in 34 areas, and today -- in many areas and today a slow clearing once again. if i put this into motion for you by 1:00 it looks like the east bay will be with mostly sunny skies. along the coast it could take until late afternoon, and we could be partly cloudy for most of the day. a northwesterly flow going to be setting up and overhead but it looks like by the evening hours, we may have that westerly flow bring back in the clouds as well as the fog deck. here it is 9:00, of course, we're anticipating the big fireworks show this evening for the big celebration of the golden gate bridge and it looks like by 9:00, we could see some of that cloud cover return to the area. looks like saucelito, tiburon, but over parts of the bay area clouds will be in the forecast. including two police officers were hurt after a house exploded in wisconsin. it happened yesterday evening in glendale, just north of milwaukee. the house was leveled and the debris burned for hours. two homes next door were also damaged. at this point, it is not clear what caused that explosion. >> and an out of control wildfire covering 150 miles is forcing evacuations in new mexico. people who live in a privately owned government town have been told to leave. unrelenting winds, very warm weather and rugged terrain are making the fire in the gila national forest too tough to fight. >> there is no containment, if smoke from the 100,000 acre fire is prompting health alerts all the way to albuquerque. one of the largest fires that michigan has seen in years is about 50% contained. if so-called duck lake fire has charred 20,000 achers in northern michigan. fire crews have successfully contained nearby fires that have popped up in the last couple days. a lightning strike on wednesday started the fire. the official start of fire season begins tomorrow for much of the bay area. and the santa clara unit of cal fire will declare fire season in santa clara, contra costa and alameda county. when that's declared that means that staffing will be increased, burn permits are going to be suspended, because of potential fire danger. firefighters are also encouraging people to clear brush 23r around their homes -- from around their home. the acting police chief of fullerton is apologizing for his department's actions following a deadly confrontation with a homeless man last year. surveillance cameras show officers beating and tazing 37- year-old kelly thomas, who authorities say was mentally ill. the acting chief tells the orange county register the officers were able to leave the scene without speaking to investigators, and that they were allowed to write their report at a later time, after reviewing the video. he says it compromised or at least damaged the public's trust and confidence in the process. two officers face charges, including involuntary manslaughter. a sacramento police dog that was shot on duty is now home from the hospital. bodi walked out of a ron cho cordova veterinary host last night. his cast is expected to stay on for eight weeks. a suspected car thief shot bodi in the jaw and paw. his police partner shot back killing the suspect. >> things are going along amazingly. it's definitely a community effort. he appreciates and it we definitely appreciate it as well. >> bodi was on a feeding tube but he is now eating soft food and drinking water on his own. is vet expects bodi to make a full recovery. bay area boy and girl scouts are paying their respects to a fallen service members this memorial day weekend. the scouts placed american flags on each grave site at golden gate national cemetery in san bruno. it took more than 3000 scouts about two hours to place the flags on the 112,000 grave sites. >> i know it means a lot to me. my brother is buried on the top of the hill by the big flag and mother and father just down around the corner. it brings a lot of joy to me seeing our young men and women honor our veterans. >> those scouts have been placing flags at the cemetery on the saturday before memorial day for more than 50 years. there are several memorial day ceremonies around the bay area tomorrow. at 10 a.m. there are commemorations at mountain view cemetery in oakland, and the bonicia ar son until post cemetery. the annual parade to the city national cemetery in san francisco, and also at 10:30 a memorial day remembrance program at oak hill park in danville. at 11:00 in the morning there is an observance at golden gate national cemetery in san bruno, as well as oak hill memorial park in san jose. and at 1:00 tomorrow afternoon there will be a memorial day service aboard the u.s.s. hornet in alameda. it's an extra special memorial day for two wisconsin children. their parents are both u.s. soldiers that were deployed to afghanistan, but they are now back home. [ crying ] >> hi. >> travis and usella hole man didn't actually tell their family they were coming home until a few afters actually they arrived. the kids came to the airport thinking they were taking a tour with the boy scouts. the parents will be home nor the next two weeks. >> we're just going to take it day by day, so we don't try to rush things, and miss something, and -- we're just going to do whatever happens. >> hug them. over and over. and then i want to show them my room, and i want to bring them to school. >> this is travis's first deployment, and asell a's second. sub tropical storm beryl is about to dampen countless memorial day barbecues. it's headed for the carolinas, georgia and florida. reporter elizabeth pran is live in jacksonville florida with the warningings now in place and when beryl may make landfall. >> reporter: hi, mike. good to see you. you can see i'm hanging onto my cap because the conditions are deteriorating fairly quickly. we still are at the early phase of this storm. we anticipate it to make landfall just north of here, anywhere between this evening and an early sunday morning. the winds, according to our latest gauge are between 20 and 30 miles per hour, but officials are concerned about that the winds could actually get up to about 60 miles per hour overnight. and i can really show you how this -- how powerful this wind is. you can see that it picks up the sand and carries it along the beach. another big concern for folks, and officials here, is that surf. you can e just how powerful that storm is coming in from the east, and what officials here are worried about, that people are going to get out into the water. all of these beaches are closed, double red flags. over the past 24 hours in jacksonville beach alone they've had to rescue seven folks from the water and up and down between florida, georgia, and south carolina at least three dozen folks from the water. that said, it's memorial day weekend, ton official start of summer. people plan their summer vacations to come here. according to aaa, about 6 and a half million people plan to come to this region over memorial day weekend. we have been talking to folks throughout the morning. they say basically, 10% of people at hotels are leaving a little bit early. a lot of people say well, i'm not planning on leaving till tomorrow anyway. i'm going to stick it out through the storm. a half a dozen hotel managers have said anywhere between two to three families are checking out early. people are very curious about this storm beryl, sub tropical storm beryl, and they seem to be waiting out the storm. back to you. >> all right, elizabeth, in jacksonville, florida thanks for that report. the latest storm scare in mexico is over. tropical depression bud toppled trees, washed out some roads and left a lot of debris on the beach. officials say they found no signs of property damage and had no reports of injuries. bud hat threatened southwest mexico with hurricane force winds but was down graded to a tropical depression yesterday. it's 9:23. dozens of firefighters worked together to perform a dramatic rescue. how they got out a horse that had become stuck in the mud. >> outside our doors the clouds are slowly parting and temperatures are slowly warming. we'll look at what you can expect for your sunday afternoon, coming up. a horse is back on dry land this morning after getting stuck in water and mud. it all started when the horse and its owner were riding on a river bed that had become muddy from recent rains. it took several units of the los angeles county fire department to free the animal yesterday afternoon. officials sedated the horse before dragging it to shore and air lifting it there away. >> dropping my mike here. >> ok? is a live look for you at chrissy field where many of the activities will be happening. everything gets ons way in just about 90 minutes. the big draw is the fireworks show set for 9:00 tonight. all of the events are free and more and more people are already showing up to claim spots for the 75th anniversary party. allie rasmus is live this morning from marin county with what she's seen from down by fort baker. >> reporter: mike, as you mentioned, thousands are expected to watch the celebration tonight. not all of them will be on the south end of the bay. some of them you can see they're here on the north side of the bay staking out a prime viewing spot for tonight's celebration. the parking lot has filled up since we got here at 6:00 this morning. in the distance there's people who set up tables and chairs and in that lot across the water, you can see beyond that ladder taking some pictures of the view here, you can see there's campers offer in the distance. some people got to the marin headlands as early as 5:00 this morning, to claim a parking spot there, and camp out until tonight's celebration. golden gate park rangers say this area and all of the public parking lots north of the golden gate bridge will remain open until those lots get too full. once all the designated parking spots fill up, rangers will start to restrict vehicle access in the golden gate national recreation area. that's why some people told us they wanted to get an early start. >> yesterday we drove over to kind of scope it out a little bit, and decided we would come over with our little camper this morning, and leave it here all day and bike over tonight around 8:00. >> reporter: now, the coast guard and police boats will be patrolling bay throughout the weekend. during the fireworks celebration tonight, people won't be able to take their boats directly under the bridge, and once the fire works are over, the coast guard says they're expecting to have to regulate a lot of the boat traffic here. >> biggest problems we expect are not during the event, but probably after event, when we release the zone, and all the boaters that happen to be on the water now want to go home, or want to go to their respective mornings somewhere. that's probably when we'll see the most problems. >> reporter: right now you're looking at a live picture across the bay of the presidio. vehicle traffic has already been shut off starting at 9:00 this morning, no cars or vehicles allowed through the presidio. here on the north side of the golden gate bridge, again fort baker, here and in the marin letlands and anywhere area north of the golden gate bridge, the public parking lots will be open until they get filled up. they been they'll start turning away vehicle traffic. the message is if you want a good viewing spot on this side of the bay get out here early, claim your spot or be prepared to walk or ride your bike. allie rasmus, ktvu. >> and the bridge's 75th will no doubt be big, but bridge officials say it won't be anything like its 50th, on may 24th, 1987, the weight of 300,000 people walking across the bridge caused the bridge's arc to actually sag seven feet. although engineers said the bridge was never in danger of collapsing. officials say they're not letting pedestrians walk over today to avoid threats of overcrowding and terrorism. a plan to install a suicide barrier on the golden gate bridge could be getting a boost. the bridge district wants to install as 50 million barrier, but has only raised $5 million for the project. senator barbara boxer is now proposing a plan that would allow local agencies to use federal transportation funds to pay for suicide prevention systems on landmarks. officials say more than 1500 people have committed suicide on the golden gate bridge. a new report is raising safety concerns about if new eastern span of the bay bridge. the sacramento bee examined cal trans' records and found errors in test reports. according to the bee the documents revealed concrete in the tower foundation was not tested properly. the report also raised questions about whether the tower would be able to withstand a big earthquake. cal trans says the bridge is safe and expects to open the new span on labor day weekend, 2013. san bruno police have arrested a third person suspected of shooting at an officer. the shooting happened near san bruno and fourth avenue at about 1:45 yesterday morning. police say an officer pulled over a car with three men inside, and when they stopped, the men got out and ran away. as they did, one of the suspects shot at the officer. he was not hit but he did return fire. two of the three suspects were caught shortly after, the third suspect was tracked down just hours later. family and friends of slain nursing student michelle le will gather in hayward to mark the first anniversary of her disappearance. the 26-year-old nursing student went missing on may 27th of last year. her body was discovered four months later. a former friend of le's is charged with her murder. the vigil is set to begin at 6 tonight at mount eden park. on tuesday the santa clara county sheriff's dive team is going to conduct another search of water ways in the morgan hill area, looking for any sign of sierra lamar. police believe she is dead and have charged 21-year-old antonin garcia torres with kidnapping and murder. a search effort resumes wednesday morning. update on the occupy protest against the oakland police department. >> we are under attack. what do we do? >> stand up, fight back. >> on friday night more than 100 demonstrators marched right through the city. an unidentified man was arrested on felony vandalism charges. police now say that man cracked a window at the warehouse bar on webster street near jack london square, a ballets frequented by off-duty officers. a man who drowned out crown beach in alameda is going to be remembered tonight. 53-year-old raymond zach walked out into the water last memorial day. firefighters were there, but did not try to rescue zach, because they say they didn't have the proper water rescue training. a gram of people gathered at crown beach yesterday afternoon to remember zach and they are planning on returning tonight to that beach to throw flowers into the water just off shore. >> it's unspeakable to me what happened, it's unspeakable the flaccidness of the city's response. >> alameda has now restored rescue boats and procedures that were lost to budget cuts. zach's brother and sister have filed a wrongst death lawsuit against the city and county of alameda. >> there are more coast guard boats out in the san francisco bay this holiday weekend. the coast guard says so far there have not been any major problems, but if fog rolls in or the wind kicks up, sailors could be in trouble. the coast guard is reminding sailors to pay attention to their surroundings, wear life vests, and do not overlook boats with too many people. >> most of the problems are going to arise from people that haven't been on the water since last summer, or maybe even in a couple years. >> 12 coast guard police and fire boats will be patrolling all weekend, to make sure boaters are following the rules. the u.s.s. iowa is on its way to its new home in southern california. the battle ship left richmond yesterday afternoon, and passed underneath the golden gate bridge at about 2:30. the iowa was one of four great american battle ships from the world war ii era. it moved president franklin roosevelt across the atlantic in 1943, and served in combat during the korean war. the iowa was reactivated during the reagan administration, and served in the persian gulf. >> i grew up on this ship. it was a big part of my life. i made a lot of really close, good friends on this ship, brothers. >> out of my long and distinguished 25-year naval career, that was the best command i was on. the best five and a half years i spent. >> during a training exercise in 1989s, an explosion killed 47 sailors. it was the worst peace time loss ever suffered by the u.s. navy. the iowa is now going to become a museum at the pacific battle ship center in los angeles. real life, rosie the riveters were honored in richmond this memorial day weekend. [ applause ] >> the home front national historic park in richmond opened a newly restored visitors center yesterday, which pays tribute to the factory workers of world war ii. the center will be open seven days a week, and features the classic rosie the riveter poster which symbolizes strength of american women who took on traditionally male jobs. san francisco's mission district is going to celebrate carnival this weekend. the weekend is topped off with a grade parade and that is -- grand parade and that's just now getting under way at bryant and 24th street. the route will go along 24th to mission, and then up to 17th street, and it is free to attend. san mateo will mark memorial day with a parade today. it's in honor of the army's 101st airborne division. the city of san mateo adopted the soldiers from a company back in 1968. the parade begins at 11 a.m. at the downtown transit center and ends at central park. there is a free celebration at the park afterwards. good morning fireworks this evening, time stamp reads 9:00, and we're already dealing with low clouds, a bit of fog returning to the coast as well as just outside the gate. so again, we'll be tracking this for killed in a double shooting in san jose. it happened just before midnight. a second person was wounded, but his injuries are not life threatening, although investigators haven't made any arrests, they believe the shootings were gang-related. work crews are putting in steel plates that will soon support new joints on the currently closed dunbarton bridge. the joints will help the bridge move during an earthquake. the seismic retro fit project should be finished by 5 a.m. on tuesday when the bridge is set to reopen. today is the 75th anniversary of the golden gate bridge. 10s of thousands are expected to sell braille along the water front -- celebrate along the water front. alex savage is live in crissy field with more on today's events. alex. >> reporter: and it will be, mike a huge day long party here along the water front. you can probably hear behind me some work going none preparation for the celebration. they just got startd in doing a little work on rivets over there i think. anyway you can see some folks starting to arrive for the celebration. they get started at 11:00 this morning. there will be live music, there will be food tents, there will also be a boat show happening here later on today. there's also this exhibit, i'll show you to the right where all the noise is coming from. this is an exhibit where you can learn about how the golden gate bridge is put together, if rivets used to hold the bridge together, what an engineering marvel it is. also some history exhibits here as well, that you can check out when you come early for this celebration. learn about the golden gate bridge that opened, of course, on this day back in 1937. we'll show you video here of its 50th birthday party when traffic was stopped, crowds streamed out onto the bridge, but of course it will be a different story later today. there's no bridge walk planned for the public. and organizers say instead, they want the iconic span to be the back drop for today's celebration. >> we looked at the public safety, we looked at what it would take operationally. and we looked at the 50th anniversary, we looked at when it opened on opening day, and to take the bridge out of service for more than the one hour that it will be out of service tonight, just felt like the wrong decision. >> one, two -- >> reporter: so if you want to take part in today's festivities keep this in mind. there is no parking for this event. with that in mind organizers are recommending that if you want to come, don't drive. instead take public transportation. you walk, or use your bike to get down here, or any other way you might want to get down to the water front area. closures will be in place. the one you need to know about is a pedestrian walkway on the golden gate bridge will be shut down to the public starting at 6:00, so they can prepare for that fireworks show. and then beyond that, all lanes of traffic on the golden gate bridge will be shut down starting at 9 tonight and the fireworks show, some of those fireworks being fired right off of the golden gate bridge itself gets under way at 9:30. we are live this morning here along the water front in san francisco, alex savage, ktvi channel 2 news. and on the marin county side you can see that people are already staking out their spots to watch tonight's fireworks show. this is fort baker. the park, lot is open but the spots are first come first served basis. just across the marina you can see more campers and cars starting to pull in. again, staking out those spots before others start to come down. the bridge will be closed from 9 to 10:00 tonight for that fireworks show. its sidewalks will be shut down starting at 6 p.m. and then will reopen after the fireworks. the presidio is closed until midnight and there will be no parking in the pa presidio, crissy field or marina greens. the coast guard is warning boaters they can't get too close to the bridge today. it has an established a safety zone for the fireworks from 8:30 to 10:15 tonight. the agency will be keeping boats at a distance for safety's sake. the zone is also needed to help barges get in and out of the area for the fireworks show. of u.n. secretary general and current envoy kofi annan will return to syria tomorrow in hopes of ending the latest round of violence. mourners held a mass burial for 92 victims this weekend. government opposition groups say 32 of those victims were children under the age of 10. residential areas were hit by small arms fire, machine guns and tanks. u.n. observers went to the scene for a first hand look at the massacre. the cerne government is deng any involvement in the killing. the u.s. military and nato now say that two air strikes mistakenly killed civilians in eastern afghanistan. the afghan government say the strikes killed a family of eight people, a man, a woman and their six children. the afghans say they were civilians with no connections to the taliban. nato says it is investigating the incident. meanwhile, roadside bombs killed four coalition service members. the brother of a blind chinese activist, chen wong change is ok after all. chen and his family were concerned the chinese had taken him into custody. the brother had vanished for a short time yesterday but has since return to do so his home. chen angered the chinese government when he took refuge in u.s. embassy and flew to the u.s. political analysts say opinion polls on same sex marriage are deceiving. a washington post survey shows 53% favor legalizing same sex marriages, while 39% oppose it. however, in all 32 states where gay marriage appeared on the ballot, voters rejected it. political consultants say it's a personal and emotional issue, and believe same sex marriage would be rejected
