feeds out of cairo, like this one, where you can see the mob gathering. this has been happening for the past two hours. you can see some of the tanks on the streets as well. the two sides are facing off, pelting each other with stones. at one point, pro-mubarak supporters charged the other side riding camels and horses on the other side of the street. and a cnn crew reported being roughed up by the force, but they are okay. we'll have a live report out of washington, d.c. coming up in ten minutes with the obama administration's response. another big story we're following this morning is that massive storm in the east and midwest. blizzard is affecting air travel all across the nation this morning, including airports right here in the bay area. let's give you a live picture from our view out at sfo. they are at the ticket counter, the american airlines ticket counter. this morning, we found travelers going to chicago will be affected the most. all flights in and out of their have been cancelled. the airport officials say new york, boston and philadelphia may also see some problems throughout the day. >> it's a very dynamic situation. things could change. i wouldn't expect much travel through chicago up to the midwest today. >> we also talked with some travelersers who were returning to the airport -- travelers who were returning to the airport this morning. the severe weather in the east is making ground transportation impossible. several drivers were stranded and had to use snowmobiles to get them out. the area is also seeing winds up to 50 miles an hour. the gusts were strong enough to tear pieces off the roof of wigly field. up to -- wrigley field. up to 1 inches additional snow is expect in chicago. we will have more on the situation in a live report including how the national guard is now helping. that's coming up in just about 15 minutes. you can check up-to-the-minute flight information at ktvu.com. look for the travel tab on that front page. 7:02. new information is raising concerns about the pipelines from pg&e. kraig debro has more about results of recent inspections. >> reporter: some concerns here are the people here which we've had a chance to talk to. according to "the san francisco examiner" pg&e submitted a report and they found 23 gas leaks. now, i've just spoken to a gas pipeline safety expert on the phone. he says the leaks are serious but he can only think of one other example where a gas leak actually caused the kind of rupture we saw back on the 9th of september. now, the report submitted to the cpuc, the california public utilities commission, says the utility has fixed the leak. so pg&e told the regulatory agency that it founded a fixed 38 others. according to richard, a seattle- based gas line safety expert, a gas leak probably did not cause the san bruno explosion. >> it's extremely ware in the 40 years i've been investigating -- investigating these. >> a gas leak is a gas leak. all it takes is a spark for anything to happen. anything should can happen. it shouldn't be leaking. it's as simple as that. >> reporter: as pg&e scrambles to investigate and look over all its massive network of pipelines, they still have to find and go over about a million pipeline records. the federal government has asked the ewe till -- utility to do that. but the paper reports that congresswoman jackie speier said she was told by high- ranking officials that they were not able too find 30% of the records of the pipeline. pg&e reputed that -- reputed that account kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. the body found in the canal is, indeed, juliani cardenas. his bodtydy was pulled from the canal yesterday, morning -- yesterday morning. ktvu's jade hernandez live this morning with reaction to the tragedy in patterson. >> reporter: we, you can imagine how surprised the hundreds of party son residents gathered here at city -- patterson residents gathered here at the city hall. everyone gathered for a vigil. it had turned into a prayer memorial. ♪ i'm gonna let it shine ♪ >> the hundreds of patterson residents wanted to show their support to the family who had just hours before received the news. the body of the clothes matching what juliani cardenas was wearing had been found. tabitha car, his mother, never gave up hope. but she said her ex, jose esteban rodriquez, would not hurt her son but authorities now say he drove the little boy and himself in the canal 45 minutes after abducting him. juliani's mother could not contain her anger for her ex- boyfriend. storm in the midwest is already causing major problems and the winter conditions are not letting up any time soon. in fact, you can see that in the camera with our reporter here, sandra endo, live in chicago, that city's been one of the most dramatically affected by the snow. how hard is it coming down there right now? >> reporter: well, right now, we're seeing a lot of snow actually being dumped on chicago. this is really the epicenter of the blizzard. so far there's been more than 17 inches already dumped on the city, and clearly, it's not et willing up. the blizzard warning is in effect until later this afternoon. you can see what is usually busy michigan avenue, pretty slow. a lot of traffic is off the streets, obviously. but before we were able to see the black asphalt of the street and now you can see the snow coming down. it's getting covered, once again. clean-up crew have been out here trying to manage all of this snow. but it's certainly taken an effect on the street. lakeshore drive was closed down last night because of a -- because a lot of stranded motorists were stuck in their cars. they had to be rescued. so far the latest update from the fire department was all 100 stranded motorists on lakeshore drive in snow drifts as well have been rescued. so that's certainly good news. area airports are managing the snow. thousands of flights have been delayed, either delayed or cancelled, making it very tough for travelers to get in and out of this area as well as getting to their final destination. so certainly, the effects of this blizzard is being felt in a wide range of states. that storm is moving east. we're still getting the effects here in chicago. it certainly won't ease up any time soon. >> sandra, i understand that schools are closed which is not surprising but what did surprise me, this is the first time chicago schools have closed in 12 years. why so long? >> reporter: that's right. actually, probably a lot of school kids are out there playing in the snow having a wonderful time, loving all of this, because chicago schools have not closed in 12 years. chicago prides itself remaining open and dealing with the cold temperatures modest airport body scanning system. the system uses different software that does not display details about a body image. travelers not carrying nobilities will get a green scan that says okay. it is access to care, prevention and treatment. president obama's healthcare reform could go before the senate. the repeal was approved in the republican-controlled house but it's not expected to get enough thank you. 7:31. the university of california is rain -- is announcing the successful evacuation of 19 students about to begin a study abroad program in cairo. they were supposed to begin their classes. they were evacuated last night. an archaeologist was also evacuated. the search is on for the man in stanislaus county that shot at a policeman. officers pulled over a truck looking for robbery suspects. police say one of the people inside the truck pulled out a gun and started shooting. no one was hit. but one bullet struck a patrol car. a san francisco merchant will be arraigned in connection court today. he's charged with two counts of hurd in sunday's shooting. police-- murder in sunday's shooting. police say the argument stemmed from competitiveness. 7:32. tonight, terra linda high school will host a grief counseling session following the death of a popular teacher. debra schmitt was found on friday, not far from her ross home. she had been missing for ten days after leaving a cryptic note on her chalkboard. the cause of her death is still unknown. it will be two to four weeks before toxicology results are available. a public memorial will be held next sought for that shows there are more than 1,000 possible new planets outside our solar system. that's more than twice as many as we knew about before. so far the planet count shows most of these planets are bigger than earth but smaller than jupiter which is the largest in our system. they are looking for planets in the goldilocks range where water can exist in liquid form. on this groundhog day, sal, pelting each other with stones and now the night has fall be in cairo, we're seeing molotov cocktails being thrown and some are causing small fires. a cnn crusade they were roughed up by the forces but they are all okay. just ten minutes ago, the white house said, we're deeply concerned about the attacks on the media and peaceful demonstrators. we will have more on the protests and the white house response coming up in a live report from washington, d.c. in a half hour. 7:59. more big story we're fooling this morning is the massive storm in the east and midwest. the blizzard is affecting air travel all across the nation this morning including airports in the bay area. this is video from snowe this morning. travelers headed to chicago will be the most affected. all flights in and out of there have been cancelled. we talked to one chicago man who said his flight was cancelled last night. >> i tried to check in and they said it was canceled. so i just called them and they said my flight got turned over to 7:00 this morning. so i go to dallas instead of chicago. >> airport officials say new york, boston and philadelphia may also see some pro problems throughout the -- some problems throughout the day. the storm is making ground transportation nearly impossible. rescue crews plucked several residents to safety this morning. they are seeing winds up to 50 miles an hour travel tab on the front page. a concern over pipeline safety may be broking following recent inspections. kraig debro is live in south san francisco with the findings that are behind this. >> reporter: according to a published report, pg&e submitted a report to the cpuc yesterday, the california public utilities commission, and that report says they found three leaks along a pipe that runs here from highway 101 up to oyster point. according to an expert i spoke with, this morning, however, leaky pipes are not that unusual. >> it's impossible to have pipelines that don't leak. it depends on how big the leak is. >> reporter: our seattle-based expert who testified before congress just last summer said a leaky pipe probably did not cause the san bruno explosion. the pipe killed 38 people, caused millions of -- millions of dollars in damage. >> if that's true, then they need to be out there and working on it more often to get it repaired when -- when there is a leak. it's not like well, it's gonna leak gas. it's gonna happen. i understand that. get more crews out there. if it costs more money, we're paying through the nose already through pg&e. >> just the news is home. as the days progressed, as the investigation progressed, we just knew that wasn't gonna be possible. everything led us to that canal. >> reporter: authorities indicated swift death up to 30 feet list in terms of delivering healthcare to children. the study by the commonwealth fund ranked california 44th out of the 50 states. it found california especially inadequate in delivering affordable care for children. the score card was based on access to care, prevention and treatment. a peel of president obama's health care reform bill could go before the senate today. the repeal was approved in the republican-controlled house last month. but it's not expected to get enough support in the senate. the healthcare law is estimated to extend coverage to more than 30 million uninsured announcing a successful evacuation of 19 students about to begin a study abroad program in cairo. they were supposed to begin their classes at the american university in cairo yesterday but were evacuated last night. an archaeology team and others affiliated with the uc system were also mock the evacuees. a search is underway in stanislaus county for a man who shot at police. it happened just before 4:00 a.m. in series after officers pulled over a truck looking for robbery suspects. police say one of the people in the truck pulled out a gun and started shooting. no one was hit but one bullet struck a patrol car. three people have been taken moo custody. a san francisco merchant is scheduled to be arraigned in connection with the fatal shooting of two rival storeowners of a fisherman's wharf shop. the man is charged with two counts of murder in sunday's shooting. police say the stemming -- killing stemmed from an argument over counterfeit merchandise. the father of one show you the mothball fleet. some ships in the group date back to world war ii. but this ship is about 50 years old. it will be the first ship ever to be recycled on the west coast. the significance of this new sight on mare island is the first on the west coast. we did talk to individuals about the towing. >> right now, we're getting the ship ready for stow. what -- for tow. if they depart at 9:30 they should be here at approximately 11:00 or just before. >> reporter: that's what we're waiting for at this point. we're waiting for them to depart. but take a look. we're going down these long stairway -- thin stairway. because we want to give you a look at the inside operation. this is a dump -- pump that's been in place and mare island was a naval shipyard. they had to come in and get things up and ready and going for this dry docking today of this ship. this is a process that's gonna take months to clean up the ship and years of work if we're talking about getting multiple ships recycled and through here. really significant for this area. up until now, they've gone all the way to texas, a 5,000-mile tow. this tow, 6 miles long. you are looking at a crowd of people that's continued to grow as the morning progresses. they are all look for jobs. hoping that the hundred or so jobs that come to this area because of this recycling will go to residents of vallejo. we've been told by the company that they have goaten 3,000 applications -- gotten 3,000 applications so for for a hundred jobs. and the 5 or so that were hired already are people to that used to work on mare
