steve, highway 24 earlier we had a fatal collision. right here where central lafayette where i put the indicator. and the freeway was closed for three hours. ktvu tara moriarty is now close to the accident scene. and she tells us what happened. tara. >> reporter: sal, the damage to that car was probably the worst i've ever seen. the engine was completely separate from the car. the fire department had to sheer the top of the car off in order to get that victim out. but it was too late. he died add the -- at the scene. this is highway 24 through lafayette traffic is running smoothly again. the accident happening at 1:30 this morning near happy valley road. that is right after the central lafayette moraga exit. a man around 50 years old from brentwood driving the red geometro was likely on his way to work when he was struck by a car going the wrong way. we are told a 20-year-old woman out of brentwood most likely intoxicated was driving a silver toyota camry on the wrong side of the freeway. she struck two cars, smashing into the geo and killing the man inside. a person in the third car also received injuries but they were minor. so a horrific accident this morning in which an innocent driver was killed. the chp has not released the name of the victim they are still awaiting to notify family members. live in lafayette i'm tara moriarty. we're also following developing news this morning in the search for a missing teenager in danville. police say her name is mady. she is at risk. claudine wong is at the command post to tell us what is happening out there right now. claudine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. this is the trailer that has been set up all night long. it's been full up until a few moments ago with staff and people that have been out here looking for this 15-year-old. i want to show you a picture of 15-year-old madeline and i'll tell you why the search has been suspended. this is the 15-year-old. she is 5'5", 130 pounds. just 15 years old with reddish brown hair. she went missing last night. i talked to the search manager about why this search has been shut down for now. >> for the most part she is a 15-year-old girl. her emotional state is unknown. really undetermined at this time. it is you know at night, early morning hours and there is always the potential for something going wrong. >> reporter: so 45 or so people have been out serging certain urban areas out here in the danville area. they had areas that were considered high probability areas. they were not able to find her but they say they are going to have to take a break for now. >> we refer to it as suspension at this point. quite frankly i don't have any personnel to put in the field for the next couple of hours. >> reporter: back live here at this sycamore valley road. this is locked up for now. they have put a padlock on it and taken a break but they are not going anywhere. danville police are still searching at this hour and planning to have a new fresh team come out here in a couple of hours to begin the search once again with search dogs again going back to some of the same areas. checking for any new areas. also within the next couple of hours residents will have their phone ringing on an automatic call letting them know about her and that she is missing. we will keep you updated. live in danville claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. time now 5:04. now to a continuing coverage of a wild fire. it's still threatening homes and a major highway. it's called the spring fire. it has spread to the pacific coast highway which has been shut down twice in less than 24 hours because of a heavy smoke. about 8,000 acres has already burned. 2,000 homes are threatened by those flames. about 100 businesses are effected as well. later on today hazardous materials teams will focus on a store. several schools in the area including cal state channel islands canceled classes today. another major wild fire is burning east of chico. this has burned about 10,000 acres and strong winds out there have made it hard for firefighters to put it out. it's only 10% contained. the u.s. forest service has it will a major fire in congress. the u.s. forest service is demanding that states give back nearly $18 million in federal subsidies saying the taxpayer money is subject to automatic spending cuts. but both republicans and democrats are saying no. they argue the money was given to the state before cults went into effect. the forest service has cut 5% of its budget under the sequestration. just about 30 minutes from now the labor department will release the closely watched unemployment numbers for april. coming up at 5:15, what economists are expecting from the april jobs report. time is 5:05. the city of san jose has proposed a financial settlement in the case of a small child killed three years ago by a falling tree. he died after a tree fell on his families truck right in front of a home. city officials are recommending a $325,000 settlement to his parents who were also hurt but they survived the crash. the family has not made a comment. the city council will be asked to approve that settlement on may 14th. investigators from the agency that decredits health facilities nation-wide made an unannounced visit to a nevada sakeret trick hospital. it could determine whether the hospital in last vegas can keep its federal funding and its gold star accreditation status. it was revealed the hospital was paid to bus 1500 patients to cities and towns all around the country since 2008. a hundred of those patients were reportedly sent here to california. people in the bay area are not the only ones waiting for the test results of those faulty bay bridge bolts. engineers world-wide are interested. how california deals with the issue could help other states and countries avoid a similar and potentially deadly mistake. cal trans is investigating why a third of the 96 giant bolts snapped last month. the bay area could clinch the battle for super bowl 50 today. nfl owners will decide whether the big game will be held in the new 49ers stadium or in miami. but today florida lawmakers are set to vote reopened station 54 in brentwood kept this fire from spreading to nearby businesses. station 54 just reopened wednesday. it had been closed last year due to budget cuts. autopsy planned today on a gunman that opened fire at the bush continental airport in houston, texas. the man went to a terminal yesterday, started firing shots into the ceiling. that shooting sent panicked passengers running for cover. this happened 150 feet from a homeland security office. when agents confronted that individual, he shot and killed himself. he's been identified as 29-year- old carinal moore of beaumont, texas. >> it's sad. it almost brings tears to your eyes because of the way i knew him. it's a sad thing. and here i wonder a couple days where he has been. it's horrible. >> airport security did recover moore's suitcase inside with a smith and weston assault weapon with a fully loaded magazine clip. he posted on social media that he intended to commit a mass shooting. a handwritten note was found on his body he changed his mind and wanted to kill himself. fresh off a victory of president obama. the national rifle association is gathering in houston for its annual convention. more than 70,000 people are expected to attend the three- day convention. the scene is stand and fight. gun control supporters are planning a vigil for victims. new this morning an over night fire at the labor department's headquarters in washington, d.c. has shut down the building for most employees and it comes just as they will release the unemployment numbers. kyla campbell is in our washington, d.c. newsroom with how the fire might effect this morning's reports. >> reporter: pam, they were worried that maybe the report wouldn't come out on time. but the spokesperson said everything is still on track. we should see that report in 20 minutes. congress says more jobs were added but it won't be enough to lower the unemployment rate. we are expected to hear 140,000 jobs were added in april. the unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 7.6%. wall street and the rest of the world are closely watching this report. if the report is weak, it will be third straight spring the u.s. economy this morning an american military plane in central asia has crashed. rescue operations happening right now. u.s. central command confirms it was a tanker plane that crashed near the border of kyrgyzstan and kazakhstan. it went down in a remote mountain region. it's believed it was a c-135 tanker that refuels war planes. it reportedly broke into three pieces. we haven't heard yet the number of people who were on board or if there were any survivors. back here at home the preliminary hearing will begin in san francisco so-called bound and gag murder case. six defendants were accused of killing a man that was found bound and gagged. the homicide victim was found with a woman who was seriously hurt. the prosecutors haven't revealed a possible motive yet but they are stressing the defendants and the victims all knew each other. and that this was not a random crime. kohls department stores will pay for overcharging customers. they were asked to pay a $175,000 fine. directors in santa clara, santa cruz, sacramento and fresno counties filed a lawsuit after an investigation found hundreds of incorrect prices at check out scanners. kohls has since changed its paper price tags to
