Esplanade drive nature took its course. A giant sinkhole opened up. The owner says water got inside the concrete path. Just washed away. Thats why we had big cavities. This video taken by a passerby shows erosion of the cliffs above the shoreline. That erosion has had consequences. The property next to the beach path was declared unlivable earlier this year. The building is condemned because it sits too close to the crips to the cliffs edge. The apartment buildings next to that one have already been demolished and longtime neighbors further down on esplanade since the problems wont go away. This one could be next. Directly to our side and that will be coming out and this section right here will too. The city issued a statement saying the sinkhole is the responsibility of the owner. The geotechnical experts are examining reports that new bluff erosion, the beach path, pretty owner says he wont make the path safe. What were going to do right now is plug that area. Fill it up with concrete pumping and then do whatever needs to be done after that. Reporter in the Bigger Picture the city has concrete barriers into the bluffs near here. For protection. You can bet the city will be monitoring those all week long. Have they given any estimation on how long the work will take . Reporter actually, yeah. Where weve had a lot of cloud cover but we have been dry. That will change as we get into tuesday, wednesday with a bigger storm expected to arrive on thursday. So tuesdays system and went rain especially to the north may. But the thursday storm is expected to bring us rain in addition to wind. Now into wednesday morning where it looks like the north bay will have the better chance of seeing those like scattered showers. Central and south bay we wont rule it out but you can see fairly week. Oakland police are investigating a crash that killed a man in a wheelchair. It happened around 5 30 a. M. On 40th street near the emeryville border. A driver struck the man while he crossed that intersection in his wheelchair. The man died at the scene. At this point its not clear if he was in the crosswalk at the time. The driver did stay at the scene. We are told he is cooperating with police. Authorities have not identified the victim or revealed any possible cause. 40th street between linden street was shut down for several hours. Also, Police Searching for the driver who vanished after a highspeed chase that left his passenger seriously injured. Ktvus alex savidge has more now on the investigation. [ sirens ] reporter this man who suffered critical injuries was transported to the hospital after this violent crash in oakland. The white pontiac he was riding in barreled into two power poles along foothills near 23rd avenue. The outofcontrol car eventually landed on its roof. Police say the driver ran off after the accident leaving his passenger trapped inside the wreckage. I heard people crying. Reporter this man just happened to be driving by right after the crash. And he pulled over to help. When i came around 10 people, they just like around 25th and they did do even the American People they said [ indiscernible ] why dont you try . People reporter Oakland Police are now searching for the hit and run driver who they say left the scene of this accident. Investigators have not released a description of that person. As the car was towed away this morning you could see a case of beer sitting in the front passenger seat. And can littering the streets. And as you can see this high speed crash left behind a huge mess in this area. Two power poles were knocked out and a number of power lines were taken down as well. Senate passed a resolution honoring those 36 victims. They also committed the brave First Responders who worked tirelessly under difficult conditions to try to bring comfort to the families of the victims. In a statement oakland congresswoman barbara lee offered her deepest condolences and prayers for the victims families and their loved ones. She went on to say as we begin the healing process, it is gratifying to know that our city has the support of communities around the country. Atf investigators have completed their work at the fire scene. Officials plan to hold a News Conference tomorrow to discuss their findings. In about an hour oaklands First Responders will hold a vigil for the victims walking from a nearby firehouse to that warehouse location. Last night a fundraiser held at the mezzanine nightclub in San Francisco where desk guests donated at least 20 to get in at the door. There was also a silent auction with proceeds going to the fire relief fund. One staff member says last nights event was personal for him because one of the fire victims worked as a sound engineer at the mezzanine. Made me appreciative to all the support going out into our community. Weve lost a lot of people. This is a very tight knit community. Its been more than a month since the body of 18yearold Kirk Kimberly was found on the campus of sonoma state university. His family and friends have raised nearly 8000 so far on youcaring. Com. The Sonoma County alliance is also offering a separate 2500 reward. Amber lee was last seen alive on october 17. His body was found on november 2nd. San jose police are investigating several deadly accidents over the past few days. From last thursday to yesterday. Five people have died in crashes in the city. Fiery crash killing two people. Near capital expressway early yesterday morning. Police say the vehicle crossed over the Center Divide and lost control and hit a sound wall. Then burst into flames. Two people inside died at the scene. One man says he heard the impact of the crash from blocks away. It was just the big, like a three or 4 00 a. M. That i heard real loud. I literally you know . That crash shut down part of the capital expressway near capital avenue for hours. The names of the people who died have not been released. Sure makes life very convenient but we do have a warning today about Wireless Technology and hackers. And it will be a big hit in the bay area as well. If you are using a wireless keyboard and mouse which is not bluetooth, you are definitely vulnerable. Reporter heres how they do it. Hackers use gear that intercepts the signals sent between your wireless devices like this keyboard or maybe a wireless mouse and your computer. And were not talking about bluetooth. Were talking plain old wireless. Theres no lock and key or code to gain entry. So the hackers use a handheld antenna that looks Something Like this to grab those signals going between the wireless and your computer. Your precious data. And once they grab them, they are in. I can sit in a parking lot and scan the entire building. And just kill each and every computer in a few seconds. Reporter hackers only need to find one vulnerable device to do it. And then he set up a wireless keyboard made by a major manufacturer. And his hacking gear to show us just how easy it is. So we have a desktop computer set up here. This is whats called airgap. That means it has no connection to the internet whatsoever. And as soon as i start typing on here, watch how quickly he is able to take control of the computer. I picked that up already. A san jose man learned his fate after being convicted in a deadly dui crash. He was been six years behind bars but as ktvus jesse gary tells us that wasnt the outcome that prosecutors had hoped for. Reporter prosecutors had pushed for a decade behind bars for carlos villalobos. But the judge citing a guilty plea to all of the charges and a lack of a criminal history imposed a midrange sentence of six years. In december 2015, villalobos was drunk with a bloodalcohol level of. 20 while driving his ford suv on east capitol expressway when he ran into two motorists speeding away both times at up to 70 miles per hour. He hit two part crocs before crashing into the driver side of a beetle. Carlos torres a married father with a 5yearold daughter was killed instantly. In court today villalobos told the judge he is sorry for his actions but in her victims impact statement, the victims widow told the court quote, he doesnt know the pain of not being able to take say goodbye. I didnt get a last kiss and he didnt get to because his daughter. This has been very hard on them. Obviously he has a young daughter only five years old. Its been very difficult for her and very difficult for his widow. They are very strong people. Very strong family. Theyve done excellent in how theyve handled the process. But its been tough. Reporter in addition to his sixyear sentence, villalobos will have three years of probation after his release and he wont be allowed to own a firearm for the rest of his life. Theres a restitution hearing scheduled for next month to see how much money he must pay the victims family for costs associated with this crime. In san jose, jesse gary, ktvu fox 2 news. Officials continue to investigate an officer involved shooting in the Sonoma County town of windsor. That happened in a Shopping Center about 5 30 p. M. Last night. His department received a report of a driver trying to hit a person walking on the old redwood highway there. Two officers responded. Matching the discussion provided in the call. They tried to pull over the car but the driver sped off. Officers chased the car for several miles and the chase ended at a Shopping Center. The pursuit ended. Hour deputies were involved in an officer involved shooting. Suspect was shot at least one time. There are reports the man was shot in the shoulder and officials plan to book him into jail after hes treated for the injury. Petaluma Police Received a call earlier in the day saying 49 yearold Christopher Eastwood was driving a gold jet armed with a gun and wanted to be killed by law enforcement. The pedestrian was not hurt. It is a tragedy that should never be forgotten. Thats what one person said while marking six months since the math shooting at the pulse nightclub in orlando. 49 people were killed and more than 50 others were injured. Should push back against statesponsored cyber attacks. In washington joel waldman, fox news. Google and the cuban government have struck a deal to allow faster access to the companys data. It will allow the internet giant to install servers on the island that will store much of the companys most popular content. That could improve internet speeds for those using its services in cuba. Its estimated only about 5 of people in cuba have internet access. The government has worked to try to boost access by providing wifi hotspots in some major cities but service is extremely slow and pretty expensive. About two u. S. Dollars an hour. Lets talk more about this deal. Ryan eldredge. Getting servers on the island is of course the first big step. The u. S. Has no direct data lying to cuba so right now google data must travel long distances through venezuela to the nearest server. Reporter yeah. This means all access to internet searches and youtube and other google products. But not to the internet as a whole. Like you said, most cubans, 11 million of them dont have access to the internet at all. So it is slowly being rolled out and those wifi hotspots the government has been installing in parks and Public Places while relatively slow and only available 3 of cubans cost about 2 an hour. Which when you think about the average monthly cuban income could is 25 a month. So it can be out of touch for most cubans to be able to get a hold of. It gives them some faster access to google but not to the internet at large. And the interesting thing is because they are storing the data on servers on the island, it gives us a leg up on some of the obama sponsored projects. Where the u. S. Telecommunications companies have come in trying to bolster cubas infrastructure in telecommunications industry. And cuba has expressed they are hesitant about that because they are afraid of state sponsored access to cuban networks and that could possibly cause them to have Security Issues in the future. But i would expect that now that relations with cuba have normalized if you will that we are going to see more deals like this struck in the future . Reporter it depends on the new administration. What their plans are. But its a good first step to allowing google into the country and allowing them to do this kind of service. It gives us sort of access to move further and create better deals. Ryan, lets get back to the russian hacking. There are two big issues here. What was the goal of the Russian Hackers . And what was the extent of the hacking . Reporter as of now we cant necessarily conclude that this was a statesponsored attack but we certainly know the hack started in russia. And the communities of the Security Community came out on friday and said they think it is likely to influence the election and not just to cause havoc in the u. S. Which is kind of interesting because the dnc got a lot of press about the fact they were hacking thousands of emails but also the rnc was also hacked and nothing from them was released. The Republican Committee is saying they were not hacked or whatever information was taken was insignificant and probably not salacious enough for them to release and that is why. Not necessarily making a political leaning from russia specifically. But its going to be tough. Right . To locate these hackers and actually hold someone accountable . Reporter thats why they are calling for a pipe a bipartisan investigation into this because we need to know more information. John mccain on cnn is saying it is tantamount to an act of war from russia. Thats some pretty serious words when you consider a scale of this magnitude. What if it really did influence our election . What if a bad character or a bad actor so to speak can influence our u. S. Elections . Who knows what could happen . Ryan eldredge. The body of a skier reported missing after an avalanche in the sierra has been recovered. The Washoe County Sheriffs Office reports they found the man under eight to 10 feet of snow at Mount Rose Ski resort. He had been with another man skiing on a closed ski run of the resort when the avalanche hit. The other man who managed to make it out safely the man who died is only described as 60 years old. His name wont be released until his family is notified. Emergency crews in marin county came to the rescue of four kayakers after their boat got stuck in the mud. Two adults and two children got stuck about 500 yards off the shore in richardson bay. Rescue crews from tiburon and southern marin Fire District walked out with paddle boards and used them to get all four to safety. They just were unfamiliar with the tides and they got caught by the diminishing tides. Its unclear how long the kayakers were stranded. They are all okay. Just a little muddy as you can see. From the midwest into new england Winter Weather is really setting and. Up to a foot of snow fell in chicago over the weekend. Ohare airport saw 1200 Flights Canceled yesterday. Nearly half of its daily total. And in detroit a delta flight with 70 people on board skidded off the runway yesterday afternoon. Good news, no one was hurt. And in wisconsin people in milwaukee are digging out from under about eight inches of snow. Put as many layers as i can on and get out the door as quick as possible. Ive been here my whole life. Not used to these winters. They get colder and colder. I came from new mexico. We would love a white christmas. So im looking forward to it. It was a very chilly start to the school day with lows in the teens. Several inches of snow on the ground. City crews are warning people to walk and drive with caution. Because of the danger of black ice. Back home wet weather filling up our reservoirs with the promise of more rain to come. Believe it or not just 72 hours the water levels at folsom lake have driven 18 feet. To guard against flooding the bureau of reclamation is planning more than double folsoms flow of water out into the american river. From 3000 cubic feet to 8000 feet. Managers say the lake needs to maintain a cushion of safe space during the wet months keeping the reservoir at or below 60 capacity. A little bit about that. So we start making adjustments increasing our releases to bring the reservoir back down to that safe space. And so we are flexible in that regard when we can make adjustments as we see fit if conditions remain wet we may make adjustments going up or adjustments going down. To maintain the storage. The bureau of reclamation says the plan released this week will be only the third time in five years that they will increase the water outflow for flood prevention. We are expecting a little bit more rain and a lot of rain. A healthy amount by thursday. We are going to transition back to a wet pattern tuesday, wednesday. Both very weak and we are looking at just a slight chance at a few scattered showers. But again thursday looks to be the doozy was not only heavy rain but expecting wind as well. Lets take a look at whats happening outside our door at this hour. Because we are with a dry day today. And we are looking at a beautiful view from San Francisco. Tough to see from this shot but partly to mostly cloudy skies across the region. That has been the case all day long. Temperatures on the cool side. Not too bad. As we get into the second part of your evening, the clouds will continue to roll in. Here is a look from up above. All the moisture continuing to stream in. Its going to take the system to drop out and commingle with this moisture to bring us some decent rain. We are looking at again just a slight chance on tuesday, wednesday. Futurecast model and show you exactly what i mean. Tomorrow morning a lot of cloud cover but mainly dry. As we get into the afternoon, picking up on just a light light shower or two perhaps over the north bay. Central and south bay we could squeeze out drizzle but not a whole lot expected. By wednesday morning more of the same. A lot of cloud cover and a few scattered showers. Notice that rain is to the north of us. Into wednesday night things start to change and here is the system. Early thursday morning we are still a few days out. The time and could change a little bit. Right now thursday looks to be the day where we not only have wet weather but windy weather. Talking gusts 30 to 45 miles per hour. That could bring down power lines and trees as we know. And in the hills and the gusts could reach 55. As far as the sierra winter storm watch will be in place. Snow levels between four and 5000 feet expected. If you are going to be commuting, you will need the snow tires or the chains. As far as rainfall amounts, the south bay and an inch or so. North bay anywhere from two to three inches and we could see more in our hills. So its going to be a very healthy storm. We talked about the king tides at the top of the hour. We are looking at this to remain in place as well. Tuesday into wednesday. The coastal flooding will remain possible as we get through the rest of the week as well. As we get into your numbers, temperatures in the 50s right now. For tomorrow we are looking at it will start to the day. Upper 30s to upper 40s with mostly cloudy skies. A little bit of patchy fog. Into the afternoon, temperatures will remain cool to mild. 56 San Francisco. 60 oakland. A lot of upper 50s for the inner east bay and 62 expected for san jose. A look at your extended forecast. The showers will be light and intermittent tuesday, wednesday. Temperatures coming up into wednesday, thursday. Thursday looks to be the wet day. Yes. Be careful. Make your plans.
