off the bus to sit down and recover. he might have witnessed the entire incident or if there are other witnesses that can narrow down the field of search. >> reporter: the victim's granddaughter mosted my grandma is in a coma and will never see her family again. she is leaving our family and i ask you to come forward if you witnessed this. they are looking at surveillance video. if they find jury three hours to find randy alana guilty of first degree murder in the killing of his former girlfriend. randy alana faces 90 years to life. he was convicted of robbery and grand theft. he and sandra coke who was a federal investigate had a relation -- investigator had a relationship and a daughter together. >> we are pleased that they were so diligent. happy they gave the family closure. >> sandra coke's body was found in vacaville in august, 2013. randy alana has 17 felony prior convictions. the defensive attorney claims someone else killed sandra coke. new at 6:00 p.m. a major shift cleaning up a massive oil spill. it is now estimated it spilled 100,000 gallons into the ocean yesterday. it effected 9 miles of the coast line near refugio state beach near santa barbara. the latest on what is being done to protect wildlife in the area. >> reporter: take a look at the rocks. oil covered. spotted. and the water. out here in the pacific. the first things that strike you here are the oil. coating rocks and sand. the dirty, oily water and crews trying to clean things up. a local official shows us pictures of a dead octopus and a fish that didn't survive. >> oil is not a good thing for the environment. this represents the concern. >> reporter: he is with california fish and wildlife. he is not ready to verify numbers but with a mess like this -- >> some of them have been impacted by oil and again we will try to do as much as we can to rehabilitate. >> reporter: locals are furious. >> i am very upset. everybody is. everybody was talking about it. what we are upset about is not that it happened. pipes break, things happen. we are upset because we are sitting here like in 1969, waiting for it to hit our shores. and they can't stop it. sky fox 2 shows the oil companies have advocated a web of pipelines through bay area cities -- constructed a web of pipelines through bay area cities. opponents say what happened in santa barbara could very well happen in the bay area. >> that is a clear and present danger we live with right now. if they expand by marine shipment into the bay we would expect that that would increase the risk. >> the fire marshal tells us there are pipelines all over the county and bigger pipelines are the biggest worry. a small line could pose just as much danger to a neighborhood. stay with ktvu on air and online for the of the tower raised questions about the 400 other bolts on the bridge. those bolts have undergone strength tests and tonight the results are in. ktvu's tom vacar with what engineers found. >> reporter: when caltrans built the base the contractor put covers over the pipes that would hold the bolts that would hold down the tower legs. >> these didn't work. >> reporter: water got down into the pipes where the bolts would be placed. some bolts sat for months. grout should have expelled the water and in some cases was incomplete or missing. caltrans says most bolts were well grouted. the question, is water damaging the bolts and is salty bay water leaking into the base and harming the bolts. >> the rods have not been in the environment long enough to have any significant impact due to that and we have time to take steps. >> reporter: caltrans is taking dozens of water samples to see if it is fresh water or bay water or salty water. or water from the high pressured jets used to inspect the bolts. caltrans says if it can fix the problem by filling the pipes with grease or concrete that would keep oxygen out. >> can exhaust oxygen. once you lose oxygen you will stop the process of the corrosion process. >> reporter: as to the bolt that did break it broke during a seismic test. 400 others did not break during that same test which simulates the largest earthquake the
