And breaking news, a massive manhunt that stretched from right here in california to idaho has come to an end. Just minutes ago, we learned the suspect in the amber alert case has been killed and the teenage girl he abducted is safe. Good evening, everyone. Im heather holmes. And im Ken Pritchett in for ken wane. 40yearold James Dimaggio was located in a remote wilderness area near cascade, idaho. Officers respondented him, along with 16yearold kidnap victim Hannah Anderson from the air at their camp site. This afternoon, s. W. A. T. Teams went in and shot dimaggio after a confrontation. It is not clear if dimaggio was armed. Hannah anderson is being taken to a hospital to be checked out. We now want to go live to idaho, where a News Conference is under way, giving us the latest information on this amber alert case. Lets take a listen. Hannah anderson is okay. Well get the latest and have it at 10 00. Members of a San Francisco fbi s. W. A. T. Team were among the 250 officers who scoured the idaho wilderness, looking for dimaggio. He is suspected of killing hannahs mother, Christina Anderson and her 8yearold brother, ethan. Their bodies were found in dimaggios burning home on sunday. If an agreement is not made by tomorrow morning, Governor Brown says he will seek a 60 day cooling off period from a judge at a special Court Hearing in San Francisco. Bart riders were relieved that no strike happened this week. Looks like no strike will happen starting on monday, which is why this state mandated sunday inquiry is set to expire. Tomorrow morning, the governor is asking a judge in San Francisco for that 60day cooling off period. The bad news was not well received by the unions, because they want to work out a deal by the weekend and not let this stretch into september or october. One Union Representative said this afternoon they are confident they can bridge the gap with management, which still stands at about 14 million a year. We want to get a deal. Sometimes when those things happen and youre given more time, you kind of take your foot off the gas. Were ready to put it all the way to the floor and get the job done. We want the deal done today. Reporter i have been texting with bart spokesman rick rice and he said he would be available for an interview if there is anything to report. That has not happened. The lead negotiate for bart, mr. Bart would have employees contribute 2 to their pensions in the first year, with increases after that. The unions want a net 0. 5 contribution after a separate raise. And bart would cap its Health Insurance contribution to basic plans, while the union wants to limit employee contributions to 5 increases each year over the current contribution of 92 a month. Crews found the remains yesterday afternoon in vacaville. The 50yearold federal investigator has been missing since sunday. Now, Oakland Police have identified randy alana as a person of interest in the case. Copes friends say the two dated briefly 20 years ago and he had recently reappeared in her life. Now to developing news that were following in southern california. Governor brown has declared a state of emergency for a Riverside County community, threatened by this wildfire. The silver fire is now 47 contained. It has burned 19,000 acres and at least 26 homes have been destroyed since this fire began back on wednesday. Residents are getting their first look at their losses, after some of the evacuation orders were finally lifted last night. This is the first time ive been here since this happened, since i have was flying out of here three days ago. And it was pretty devastating. More than 2000 firefighters are on the fire lines right now. Calfire Officials Say 71,000 acres have burned across the state this year. That is nearly twice as many as this time last year, with the height of the fire season still to come. As students and parents prepare to go back to school, emergency officials in the east bay are getting ready in a different way. Just take a look. This is san leandro high school. Today, it looked like a war zone, but it was all a drill to make sure students are safe in the event of a terrible situation. Ktvus anne ruben watched it all happen. She joins us live now with more. Reporter well, in this case, the scenario involved two roving gunmen and about a dozen pretend victims, but police and paramedics didnt know what they were up against until they got here. Shots fired at san leandro high school. Reporter First Responders rush in as gunfire rings out. While the gunmen here arent real, the response is, and every second counts. If we were to stage basically every shot could potentially be a life. Reporter School Shootings like at sandy hook have changed how police and paramedics act. Third floor, we have information the shooter is up there. Reporter now, they dont wait outside for s. W. A. T. Teams to arrive. Its often patrol units heading in first. Were moving quicker. Were moving in, maybe a more raw virp and were doing it together. Reporter thats why they say training is more important than ever. In fact, san leandro in Alameda County have never done an exercise on this scale before. Student volunteers played the victims. It really gets you going. You just sit there and youre almost starting to think what if this actually was happening. Police i would like to know what they are doing definitely, and to try to get everybody out fast. Reporter the san leandro superintendent says he was happy to help, too, giving First Responders a venue to perfect skills they hope they never have to use. We hope it never happens, but if it does, we want to be prepared. Its better to take a proactive approach than reactive approach. Reporter police have been doing whats known as active Shooter Training for years, but nothing quite this dramatic or on this scale. They say what they learned today was invaluable. Two dozen demonstrators have been camping out at the post office for nearly two weeks now. They are trying to halt the planned sale of the 100year old building, with its depressionera mural created by an artist who also worked on the coit tower. They are trying to sell it off. Trying to sell this one off, because its an Historic Building with a lot of value in a downtown area. Big money. The Postal Service says it doesnt need the whole space, but hopes to rent that part of the building to continue as a post office. In the north bay, police investigated a pretty unusual accident involving a runaway horse and buggy. Take a look now. Petaluma police say a man was giving an 11yearold girl a buggy ride as part of a Family Gathering on East Washington way. The horse got spooked and took off running. When the carriage hit a street sign, the driver was thrown off, loafing the girl alone in the back of the buggy. The driver of a white pickup truck stopped to help and as the horse ran past, the carriage hit the front of the truck. The girl had minor injuries from the crash. The horse was caught not far away. We have a happy followup story now to one we first brought you last night about a partially paralyzed dog whose wheelchair was stolen in richmond. Thank you so much thank you so much Good Samaritan Sandra Gordon of San Francisco donated a doggie wheelchair today to the family. Gordon lost her own dog earlier this week to a spinal cord disease. After she saw the story last night about the theft, she felt giving masons wheelchair to the family was the right thing to do. They said the two dogs were so similar that most of the settings on the device didnt have to be changed. Its not the pirates of the caribbean, but a gun buyback in oakland. How residents and the police feel this will help make the streets safer. Living with aids, now threatened with eviction. This Gun Buyback Program offered 100 for each gun, 200 if it was an assault weapon. My husbands cousin gave it to him a long time ago. My husband died. I dont need them, just want to get rid of them. Reporter accidental shootings in the home are a big concern. It would take the opportunity away for my child to hurt anyone or anyone in my house to hurt anyone. Reporter most of the youth volunteers know all too well the impact of gun violence. I have at least 10 friends in a wheelchair right now. Because of gun violence . Yes. Reporter police recovered dozens of handguns, which are often used in crimes, but perhaps the prize today goes for this ak47, which is a weapon of choice for gangsters. Seeing people that you love die, its crazy. Reporter the city has recently been rocked by high profile killings, including just three days ago when a man and his baby son were shot to death as they slept in an east oakland home. Shouldnt be 13yearolds, 15yearolds shooting each other. That shouldnt be happening. Theres something wrong. They are not getting the guns from nowhere. I think this gun buyback is good. Reporter not everyone was as careful with their firearms as they could have been. An officer examined this gun, which turned out whoa. Reporter to be loaded. Activist and friends rallied today to support a long time San Francisco resident, now threatened with eviction. The rally at the Tenants Union on cap street featured renter Jeremy Michael who as aids. Hes lived in his rent controlled apartment in the castro for 17 years. Last september, michael was served with a socalled ellis act eviction, giving him a year to move out as his building is converted to a house. For me to move to any other place, i wouldnt be able to afford to stay in the city. Im pretty much fighting to stay in my rentcontrolled apartment and to stay close to my doctors who have kept me alive this long. Michael says the state law is being used to evict the elderly as well. One of the new owners of the building reportedly said he made an offer to buy out michael. Squash, cucumbers, kale. Today, occupy the farm protesters returned to a disputed stretch of uc berkeley land, this time by invitation. 40 people are planting in an experiment in urban farming. Protesters have been trying to stop planned development on this part of the property. Supporters of todays project hope it will help grow a better relationship between the university and the community. President obama today told disabled veterans that the Veterans Administration is finally speeding up its response to claims. After years when the backlog kept growing, finally the backlog is shrinking. In the last five months alone, its down nearly 20 . Were turning the tide. Mr. Obama spoke at the annual disabled Veterans Convention in orlando. The va reports the average wait time on disability claims is more than 270 days. Today, the white house also announced an action plan to reduce soldier suicides and boost treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder and brain injuries. In colorado, a mudslide has claimed at least one life in an area burned in last years waldo canyon wildfire. Here, you can see mud and water overflowing the highway in Manitou Springs near colorado springs. Officials say a mans body was found beneath the debris, covering the road. Things are beginning to change a little bit for the second half of the weekend and into next week. As far as temperatures from this afternoon, they range from the cool 60s with patchy fog for pacifica, 70s around the bay. Temperatures inland, in the low to mid80s. Right now on the maps, no storms, but theres the fog getting its act together offshore and pushing back into the bay. We still have this pretty good onshore breeze. In fact, fairfield, winds out of the southwest at 20 miles an hour sustained. Out toward the concord area, winds out of the west at 12 miles an hour. And sfo, winds at 20 miles an hour at last check.
