live at rock park, angela schilling, channel two news. thanks angela. so is any more moisture on the horizon? chief meteorologist mike alger is in the weather center... mike, the snowy season isn't over yet, is it? very warm and dry conditions with variable cloudiness will continue through the weekend, with a record high temperature on friday a possibility. highs will climb into the mid-60s do you have what it takes to become a police officer? tonight we take you through the intense 20-week northern nevada we followed dozens of recruits - hoping to earn their badge. ...car screeching... ...insert action music... ...spraying pepper spray... "alpha! beta!"... ...action music... "come on, punk! come on!"... fires shots... it's intense... "they have a lot of learning to do in a short amount of time." but necessary... to learn what it takes to serve our community. "to help them, protect them." on a mission to wear the badge. this is the northern nevada law enforcement academy. more than 20 weeks ago, still in civilian clothing... this class of recruits - for washoe county, reno and sparks police and the nevada highway patrol - is anxious to get started. "first i'd like to commend you for choosing what i believe to be the most important and difficult profession that anyone could choose to do." most of the first several weeks is in the classroom - studying procedure and law. from traffic stops to domestic abuse. "we can't put them in a domestic about domestics first." this 16-hour unit was especially eye opening. "the only time we are drawing our weapon is that we're in the need to use deadly force. if we feel threatened. if the public feels threatened." ...shooting guns... and knowing when it's safe to use force - was echoed out here - where recruits spent hours practicing. but their accuracy isn't only tested on the range. ...cars screeching again... they must handle stress behind the wheel, too. which is why they go through this emergency vehicle operators course - learning high-speed maneuvering. "so we're going to match the speed and drift over until we make contact." and, just as practical, is their d-u-i training. with the help of intoxicated volunteers - recruits learn how to properly perform a field sobriety test... and the warning signs of a drunk driver. "the signs and symptoms. there's red, watery eyes, the slow and slurred speech. the odor of intocicants coming from the vehicle." important skills; ...chest compressions... some livesaving, in fact... "it gives these officers a tool any given situation." to digest, retain and call on in a moment's notice. "they know how to wear a badge, carry a gun, investigate crimes, etc. but i want to make sure the word service is always at the forefront of their mind." becoming a public servant isn't a job for the weak. going through the academy isn't easy, but being a police officer is even more of a challenge. a life, these recruits, signed up for - with their unwavering commitment to protect and serve. how many graduated? tune in tomorrow night at five. i'll introduce you to a couple of them - for their thoughts on going through the academy - especially during some of the more grueling days - like when they were pepper sprayed! if you're just joining us let's catch you up on the big story we covered at 5.... and that's how the primary in new hampshire could impact us here in nevada. the experts say results in new results in nevada because nevada has such a different demographic voting. and they say no matter what happens in south carolina...nevada's voice will still be heard loud and clear. lokken:"nevada as a front-loaded caucus state...along with the early primary state has a 4 times greater influence on picking the nominee of each party than if we waited til april or may." nevada's democratic caucus is february 20th... the republican one is the 23rd. for much more on the impact of new hampshire's primaries... stay tuned for the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley- up next at six. in money watch... it can be a big convenience when you're in need of some fast cash...but atm fees are reaching record levels. ky sisson has more on how to save money when you need funds fast. when choosing a bank, many people take into consideration how many atms they have for customers to use for free. and with good reason... approaching five dollars per transaction. many cash machines are owned indepentently from banks so using an out of network atm most likely means you're going to be charged twice. steve carrick- "you have to be careful. if you're not at a surcharge free atm you likely will get charged by your bank for using a non-bank atm as well as the atm owner will charge you a fee." the fee posted on the machine sometimes ends up being double what you think you will pay because of certain bank surcharges which vary from 2 or 3 additional dollars. most banks are a part of larger networks that give customers thousands of atms around the country absolutely free. steve carrick with heritage bank says they and others have ways for customers to navigate which cash machines to use. carrick- "a surcharge free atm either on the internet or on an app and you can use those atms at no additional charge." one of the most popular ways and, in most cases, without surcharge is getting cash back from a grocery store. edwin maltonato- "sometimes the people want to do fast cash back. so they get something cheaper like a fifty cent item." a cup of coffee and your cash. covering money watch, ky sisson, channel 2 news. and mike alger will have a look at your forecast, coming up. as the baby boomers enter their golden years, there are countless products on the market - promising to help keep the brain sharp - like computer brain games. but do they really make a difference? what experts think in tonight's health watch. arianna: the washoe county school board is taking steps to ensure the public... that their money is being well spent. i'm arianna bennett... i'll tell you what change they just announced... after the break. "you're watching channel 2 news... with kristen remington, landon miller, garrett dearborn on welcome back... the washoe county school district board of trustees announced it is forming a new oversight committee... for spending on school buildings. as you may know-- the district has been asking for years... for a source of funding to build new schools and ease overcrowding. and this move-- could help them get it. arianna bennett joins us now live from the newsroom with a look at why... ari...? at a public meeting last week for the committee working to raise taxes for school buildings... commenters... who said they were fine with paying a small tax increase... but they were uncomfortable with entrusting that money to the school board. they asked for a third party to manage and oversee that money... and the school board listened. angie: "our facilities people have been tremendous in terms of counting every nickel, watching every dollar, but this is just another level, because the community wants even greater transparency and more input, and we hear that." the capital funding protection committee... will be made of city and county leaders, building experts... and people from the community it will be responsible for overseeing the budget and any additional funding for school buildings... and for making recommendations on how to spend it. while the final authority to spend that money still lies with the school board... dr. taylor says it would be an extensive, and public process to go against the recommendations of the committee. angie: "if we don't go with their recommendation, if it isn't approved, if it isn't supported, then we have to do that publicly, and then we have didn't go through with it." the board is still working to finalize the details of the new oversight committee. covering school watch live, arianna bennett, channel 2 news. and mike alger will have a look at your forecast, coming up. dallas: "the nevada wolf pack baseball season is just around there corner and there's a new coaching staff this season. i'm dallas colodny and hear from new head coach t.j. bruce coming up in sports. brain games. are they a smart investment to keep your brain sharp? what experts say can boost your brain-power best... in tonight's we all know the importance exercise has on our bodies... but what about workouts that target our organs - like our brains? while you can't really grow your brain... experts say there are some ways to help keep it as sharp as possible as you age - in tonight's health watch. should we shell out time and money for games that we are told will make our brain work better? "brain development starts in utero and there is a long period of time in which the brain matures just as the rest of the body matures." and after that it's pretty much a downward slide "after it's fully developed its like the rest of the body nothing works as well ten years down the line." that's where brain games come of less forgetfulness, sharper and quicker problem solving-basically better thinking power. "the question that then pops up is to what degree do these cognitive tasks that you've practiced on will generalise and help maintain cognitive skills in a variety of real world tasks." we do know there are some things we can all do to make our brains function better. healthy living and a fair amount of exercise will help keep your brain strong "both social interaction that you have and some of the more broad type of activities in which you engage are related to maintaining a level of function at optimum levels." so if you want to play a few brain games now and then, it's probably not the worst thing you can do- but don't forget to get outside, see people and try something new, because those brain boosters are free. and some food for thought... experts say choosing colorful fruits and vegetables to eat over processed foods can help you stay mentally fit as well. for a list of what those include, go to k-t-v-n dot com let's check in on the roads with our traffic reporter chaison dean in the alice 96 point 5 traffic center. expect some heavy traffic northbound on 580 at moana to 395 and oddie and on i80 east at about to the nugget. otherwise though there arent any accidents or incidents to there and pelase continue driving safely. i'm chaison dean and that's your traffic!
