"alpha! beta!"... ...action music... "come on, punk! come on!"... fires shots... it's intense... "they have a lot of learning to do in a short amount of time." but necessary... to learn what it takes to serve our community. "to help them, protect them." on a mission to wear the badge. this is the northern nevada law enforcement academy. more than 20 weeks ago, still in civilian clothing... this class of recruits - for washoe county, reno and sparks police and the nevada highway patrol - is anxious to get started. "first i'd like to commend you for choosing what i believe to be the most important and difficult profession that anyone could choose to do." most of the first several weeks is in the classroom - studying procedure and law. from traffic stops to domestic abuse. "we can't put them in a domestic about domestics first." this 16-hour unit was especially eye opening. "the only time we are drawing our weapon is that we're in the need to use deadly force. if we feel threatened. if the public feels threatened." ...shooting guns... and knowing when it's safe to use force - was echoed out here - where recruits spent hours practicing. but their accuracy isn't only tested on the range. ...cars screeching again... they must handle stress behind the wheel, too. which is why they go through this emergency vehicle operators course - learning high-speed maneuvering. "so we're going to match the speed and drift over until we make contact." and, just as practical, is their d-u-i training. with the help of intoxicated volunteers - recruits learn how to properly perform a field sobriety test... and the warning signs of a drunk driver. "the signs and symptoms. there's red, watery eyes, the slow and slurred speech. the odor of intocicants coming from the vehicle." important skills; ...chest compressions... some livesaving, in fact... "it gives these officers a tool any given situation." to digest, retain and call on in a moment's notice. "you're watching channel 2 news... with kristen remington, landon miller, garrett dearborn on welcome back... the washoe county school district board of trustees announced it is forming a new oversight committee... for spending on school buildings. as you may know-- the district has been asking for years... for a source of funding to build new schools and ease overcrowding. and this move-- could help them get it. arianna bennett joins us now live from the newsroom with a look at why... ari...? at a public meeting last week for the committee working to raise taxes for school buildings... commenters... who said they were fine with paying a small tax increase... but they were uncomfortable with entrusting that money to the school board. they asked for a third party to manage and oversee that money... and the school board listened. angie: "our facilities people have been tremendous in terms of counting every nickel, watching every dollar, but this is just another level, because the community wants even greater transparency and more input, and we hear that." the capital funding protection committee... will be made of city and county leaders, building experts... and people from the community it will be responsible for overseeing the budget and any additional funding for school buildings... and for making recommendations on how to spend it. while the final authority to spend that money still lies with the school board... dr. taylor says it would be an extensive, and public process to go against the recommendations of the committee. angie: "if we don't go with their recommendation, if it isn't approved, if it isn't supported, then we have to do that publicly, and then we have didn't go through with it." the board is still working to finalize the details of the new oversight committee. covering school watch live, arianna bennett, channel 2 news. and mike alger will have a look at your forecast, coming up. dallas: "the nevada wolf pack baseball season is just around there corner and there's a new coaching staff this season. i'm dallas colodny and hear from new head coach t.j. bruce coming up in sports. brain games. are they a smart investment to keep your brain sharp? what experts say can boost your brain-power best... in tonight's we all know the importance exercise has on our bodies... but what about workouts that target our organs - like our brains? while you can't really grow your brain... experts say there are some ways to help keep it as sharp as possible as you age - in tonight's health watch. should we shell out time and money for games that we are told will make our brain work better? "pretty challenging in a lot of aspects, but the players did a really nice job, they really competed. they are trying to learn the system and we are trying to learn them." "he is a great coach he really knows what he is talking about, so that is something to look forward to, he is a smart coach yea he knows exactly what he is doing so i am looking forward to it."
