>> yes. >> reporter: and now this is syria. >> salma is ours. >> reporter: salma is yours. the nightmare of syrian civil war is now in its fifth year. a quarter million people have homes. millions of refugees. and in this chaos, isis was and now the russians are here. and they are all in. more than 200 russian air strikes boosted the syrian troops here and the battle continues. it's only been a few days since the syrian government troops and we can still hear in the hills and villages beyond mortar fire, small arms fire. those are the front lines a few miles away. in the three months since russia joined the fighting, their forces have turned the tide of battle. massive air strikes and cruise missile attacks have pulverized rebels and bolstered the assad regime for decades, a close moscow ally. we also went to sea on board a russian destroyer, sailed out how much firepower moscow committed to the effort. only is supporting the russian a signal to the rest of the world about the russian navy's modern capabilities. at the main russian air base in syria, the jets are roaring day and night. the perimeter bristling with helicopter gunships. this is the tip of the sphere of russian air power in syria. the russians tell us they've flown more than 5,000 sorties from this base, striking 10,000 targets. the massive russian commitment here and the way it's rapidly shaped the battlefield stand in sharp contrast to president obama's years of caution. even after declaring -- >> that assad needs to go. >> reporter: but the u.s., britain and others say russia is helping the assad regime a lot more than they're fighting isis and they accuse their forces of indiscriminate attacks that have killed hundreds of civilians. we saw russian troops loading so-called dumb bombs, unguided munitions, very inaccurate, lots of potential for collateral damage. general igor konashenkov, he scornfully dismissed the charge. what civilian facilities are you talking about, he says? militants and the fbi. gunfire erupted during a traffic stop outside the wildlife refuge where the militants had been holed up. killed in a hail of bullets was standoff spokesman robert lavoy finicum. eight people were arrested, including the leader of the each will face a federal felony conspiracy charge. we'll have more details in our next half hour. the fbi says it broke up a terror plot in wisconsin which targeted a masonic temple. prosecutors say samy mohamed hamzeh planned to storm the masonic temple in milwaukee and kill 30 people. he said he hoped to show is that nobody can play with muslims, as well as spark more attacks. the arrest was a result of an undercover investigation which began last september. police in seattle this morning say two people are dead and at least three others wounded by gunfire, all of this taking place late last night at a homeless camp in downtown known as the jungle. believes the shooting was not random and that there are two persons of interest in the case. six cleveland police officers have been fired and six others suspended for their role which left two unarmed people dead. officers fired a total of 137 shots during the incident back in 2012. both occupants of the car were the police union blasted the decision, calling it politically motivated and insane. >> it's a terrible situation. it's a tragic situation. but we responded. we responded to the felonies that were being committed. and don't let anybody tell you any differently. >> the chase began when officers standing outside the police headquarters mistook the sound of a beat-up chevrolet malibu backfiring as a gunshot. now to southern california where the reward for information about those escapees has now grown to $200,000. the three men all believed to decision of a -- on hospitality for iranian president during a visit to rome is being ruled as ridiculous by italians afraid of offending the strict muslim during his visit to an art museum decided to cover up the nude statue. the iranian president is on a five-day tour in europe to boost economic ties. the move has local politicians rolling on both sides of the aisle. italy also chose not to serve gibson. >> and i'm reena ninan. we're going to actually begin with the breaking news out of oregon where one person has been killed in a shootout between the fbi and members of the armed group holding a federal wildlife refuge. victim has been identified as robert lavoy finicum who had been acting as a spokesperson eight people have been arrested, including the leader, ammon bundy. abc's alex stone has the late details. >> reporter: the takedown did not happen at the wildlife refuge where militia members were holed up for three weeks, armed, some claiming they were ready for a battle with law enforcement. instead, oregon state police and federal agents moved in as group leader ammon bundy and his followers were on the move, apparently driving to a meeting with locals. police conducted a traffic stop on oregon's highway 395, pulling over the vehicle bundy was riding in. law enforcement sources are telling abc news a person who died open fire first and then was killed in a return of bullets. bundy and multiple other people who were with him were arrested. the arrests also took place elsewhere. immediately a local hospital was put on lockdown as a follower who was injured in the shootout got treatment there. alex stone, abc news. and trump will not take center stage in tomorrow night's debate on fox news. in fact, he's not going to take the stage at all. >> trump was demanding fox as one of the moderators. fox refused, so trump says, i'm out. he's been highly critical of kelly since a debate in august when she asked him about the disparaging words he used to describe women he didn't like. >> megyn kelly's really biased against me. she knows that. i know that. everybody knows that. do you really think she can be fair at a debate? >> i maintain it was a the debate. on the democratic side, hillary clinton is barely edging out bernie sanders in iowa. sanders seemed shocked by the huge crowd in st. paul last night. so many people turned out, nearly 5,000 people were moved for the most part, sanders stayed on script, calling for a political revolution. hillary clinton has been on the stump in iowa, as well, stepping up her criticism of sanders essentially calling him unelectable. and at a town hall meeting, clinton was asked if she would be open to nominating president obama to the supreme court? saying that question was a first for her, but said, it's a great idea. . classes are canceled today in one indianapolis school district following the death of a veteran principal. susan jordan was struck and killed when a bus jumped the curb in front of her elementary school. two 10-year-old students were hurt but are expected to survive. jordan had been principal of the school for 22 years. let's move on now to the big digout after the blizzard of 2016. the federal government, by the way, in washington are set to reopen today, and so are schools there and in philadelphia, but not in baltimore. slowly but surely life is returning to normal in the eastern u.s. we get more from abc's david >> reporter: take a look. a front-end loader in queens needed to pull a sanitation part of the reason this recovery is so slow. residential the spread of the zika virus. many pregnant women who have traveled abroad are rushing to doctors to get checked. getting cranial ultrasounds and eye exams if their mothers were possibly infected. any patients with symptoms we are having them tested. >> reporter: the fear is a possible link between the virus and birth defects like microcephaly in which babies are born with abnormally small heads it's also been linked to paralysis in adults. there's already a travel advisory in effect for pregnant women to avoid these 24 areas where the disease has been detected. including el salvador where officials are asking something stunning forks women to avoid getting pregnant until 2018. in brazil, the host country for this summer's olympics, the health minister says the country is sending some erupted. police say the shooting was very targeted and they are searching for two persons of interest. the two anti-abortion activists indicted by a houston grand jury plan to turn themselves in. both facing a charge of tampering with a governmental record. it's a felony. apple says its iphone sales may have hit a wall. those sales grew at the slowest pace since the device was first introduced oregon where leaders of an armed group that seized a remote wildlife refuge has been arrested. one of the group's members was killed during the takedown, which occurred during a traffic stop. jason patrick was still at the scene when the arrests were made. that a couple people were shot and one person is dead. doesn't sound much like a peaceful resolution to me, but everybody at the -- is making strong preparations for a peaceful resolution. i'm not sure how much you can trust the folks that say peaceful resolution, but that's what we're preparing for, the peaceful resolution. > the fbi says ammon bundy and the others who were arrested face felony charges of conspiracy to impede the duties of federal officials through the use of force, intimidation or threats. now to a terror plot. the fbi says targeted a masonic temple in milwaukee. the suspect, a u.s. citizen, is behind bars. abc's pierre thomas has the details. >> reporter: authorities say the suspect wanted to unleash a cold-blooded massacre and spark other attacks across the country. according to the fbi, samy mohamed hamzeh, an american citizen, planned to go inside a masonic temple in wisconsin, lock the doors and gun down 30 he went on a tour of the temple just last week, after visiting a firing range, allegedly thinking he would carry out the attack with two other radicals using three machine guns with silencers. investigators say he is caught on surveillance tape saying, when we go into a room, we will be killing everyone. the fbi launched this investigation in september of last year. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. well, naval authorities in san diego have lifted the lockdown imposed after reports that shots had been fired after completing a full sweep of the base and at nearby schools, the navy says it found no sign of a gunman and no evidence of any shooting. an unidentified employee reported hearing three shots early yesterday morning, prompting a full-scale lockdown that lasted nearly six hours. six cleveland police officers have been fired and six others suspended for their roles in a police chase and shooting which left two unarmed people dead. the officers fired a total of 137 shots during the incident. abc's elizabeth hur has more. >> reporter: timothy russell and melissa williams were inside this car riddled with bullets. in all, 137 shots fired. russell and
