[ music ] this morning we're putting the fun in functional for back to school shopping. from the requirements to the desired list. and consumer tech journalist jennifer jolly joins us now with the combo the things you'll want. good morning, jen. >> good morning, j.j. it is so great to be back again. >> it is. fun to see you again. i heard you have a great phone to show us. >> i do. and i'm going to start with my favorite f word, free. that's right. t mobile is giving away free smart phones. they're giving away the samsung you get a plan with six gigs of data for more or months. for families it includes streaming video offering, binge on. i love that. so you can stream all you want without it ever counting against your high speed data fees. we parents who have kids that tend to binge a little on the watching things from their phone, which most of us do, we love that. no sticker shock surprises. another thing that i really love. i'm super hard to impress. i see tons of technology. this is one of the first really new innovative things i've seen with phones in a long time. this is motorola's new droidz with moto mooeds. you can blast power right from your smart phone. these are almost like smart phone cases. you snap them right onto the phone and then they transform the movie projector is my absolute favorite, or high-tech boom box with sound boost. yeah. it is so, so, so cool. i have not seen anything like that before. and i love it. that movie projector is amazing. on the required list, get some extra protection for your kids' devices no matter what. i like this software from a.v.g. it goes really far in antivirus protection and it's a lot better with your computer. and not only detects and removes viruses to prevent things like identity theft and fraud, but it also blocks malicious links as your child surfs the web. and pretty much every parent that i've ever talked with has had that happen to them and their kids. cool gadget, think about a computer. think about how big. even the smallest laptops are now, imagine putting a tiny walking around with it. that's what this intel compute stick is. it can turn any tv or monitor into a high speed super full powered pc. you know, that's gonna be perfect for college kids trying to save space in cramped dorms. you plug into an hdmi port, download the remote keyboard or app and instant pc. a problem solving bit of technology that i have here on the table is this archerc 9. this creates high spidery liable wi-fi with super powerful wireless ac technology. it's a dual band router with ac 1900 speed that let's you game and watch 4 k movies, send e-mails to, bottom line, you'll have wi-fi in every room of your house where you need it most. dumped off wi-fi and you have no idea what happened. you can find out more about everything i've talked about here at hunknews.com/wow. >> hey, jen, this all is super fascinating and very high-tech. what about for those kids who might be more artistic? is there anything for those kind of folks? >> i am so glad that you asked me about that because disney and nintendo collaborated with this right here. it's the disney art academy for nintendo 3ds. kids love nintendo. and this really collaborates together and gives them step by step instructions on how to draw some of their favorite disney and pixar characters. elsa from "frozen," mickey mouse. i love this. and it works across the 3ds family of systems. >> that's super cool. it's so creative. my kids can be their own animater. >> absolutely. that's so cool. can finally draw mickey mouse. >> thank you so much for joining us. always great to see you. >> get the essentials and the ones you really want. for more information, head to the web site on your screen. >> as you may know, it's often a difficult process four our veterans to transition from military to civilian life. our next guests are working hard to change that. here with more is vet jim lytner and executive sechiari. how are you? great having you. >> great to be here. >> let's talk about this center and the need for it. the v.a. doesn't provide the services that the center provides, correct? >> no. this is privately funded, although bits and piece of this has been done all over the country. nobody has put it together under one roof. >> it would be a very big roof. >> it's a big roof. we support veterans and the families. if a veteran is going to heal, they have to have the entire support. so we focus on the families as well. >> absolutely. let's talk about some of the programs that are available to the veterans and their families. what is offered? >> it includes obviously suicide awareness and prevention. >> very important. >> also we'll be doing pro and postdeployment briefing. programs for children in terms of anti-bullying and martial arts and we even have a woman's veterans center because their unique needs are not being addressed because we have that road for female veterans. that's one thing we're really also focusing on is helping, aiding our female veterans. >> those walls have been knocked down and now there needs to be something more. >> absolutely. >> how is your service different than other organizations? >> well, we're like a one start shop. basically when they come to the center, they start the journey with us in termination of with them overa lifetime. so how we achieve that is we track their progress, their success, their outcomes to make sure that we can help them any given time because the priorities change after two or three years when they come back for assistance. that's one of the things. and additionally, we really also focus on helping the families. when we're working with that veteran, we're also making sure we're including the family members in the whole process 'cause there is different dynamics that go on with each veteran we assist. >> when you have these come, and you here it so often where that transition, it's almost like whiplash. it's such a difference and making the stuff that you did during military life, making it translate to civilian life. what's the sun primary setback you see for our military men and women transitioning back to civilian life? >> one of the things, because they're going through a cultural change, the community doesn't quite understand what that change means. and how do they fit in in the community and how do they adapt and just getting the community to just really understand and listen what's going on in their personal life so that we can better serve them and assist them in our community. >> absolutely. you both had nonprofits you decided to collaborate. how did this all happen? >> we have been working together for about two years trying to help different veterans groups and their families and found out very quickly that we had to have a roof over our head. today have a place to go. we tried to put a group together about a develop a site, wanted to hold monthly meetings but it didn't work. it's so sc%ttered. this is centralized. this is the place that the vfw, vva, american legion, all of the different service organizations can go and meet and pull the wagon the same way. >> we're looking at a picture right now. where is this located? >> right across from the casino on discovery park. >> awesome. and the web site is right there you have an event happening at the end of the month. tell us about that. we're doing a first responder program to -- it's a town hall, be live at the center doing a live broadcast. with military, police, and emt fire department to teach the public what the split second decisions have to be made with these people and the problems they go through. it's easy to criticize. but when we see a shooting, what are all the details that go if you hesitate, you die. so we want to educate and try to improve what's going on out there. >> it really is an incredible center. you're telling me it's 15,000 square feet. but you have how many programs? >> when we are in full swing, we'll have 24 programs and services under one roof. >> that makes 15,000 look a little smaller. >> this is a collaborative platform with all the community partners, whether they're nonprofit, government agencies. we have the v.a. hospital bringing in some of their classes into the center 'cause veterans and family members to go to for specific ongoing assistance and classes. >> it's phenomenal seeing the fruits of your labor. thank you so much for joining us and we look forward to it. >> thank you so much. >> appreciate it. >> upgrade a veteran life. if you want more information, head to the web site or call the number on your screen in north las vegas. up next on the "morning blend," it's a circus of an events. fund-raiser that helps valley kids in the unique way. are you on facebook or tw you can like or follow us. vegasmorningblend.com. i'm catherine cortez masto and i approve this message. it's a simple question. in washington, has congressman joe heck been standing up for you? heck voted ten times to defund planned parenthood. he even tried to shut down the federal government in order to eliminate funding for planned parenthood. and heck's against a woman's right to choose and supports overturning roe v wade which would allow states to criminalize abortion. he's not for nevada. social cirkish is an after school program that uses the circus arts to positively impact underserved youth here in the 19 students will perform in a showcase demonstrating juggling, tumbling and aerial skills. >> that's right. flying in to tell us, board member, robert rueter and carly sheridan. how are you? >> great. >> this is the social cirkish. what is the social cirkish? >> social cirkish is an after school program and it really focuses on developing social and physical gains within youth. >> so cirkish. >> yeah. we do that through the circus arts because that teaches collaboration. it teaches dependence on each other. creating a positive peer pressure to make sure that behavioral improvements may be made within these students to make sure they can stay part of that program. they're students hold them accountable to those things. >> teaching them such fun skills. who doesn't want to know how to juggle throughout life? exercising, which is fantastic. we're getting them to exercise and have fun and build pyramidst require has huge amount of team work, collaboration, and safety and focus. so they do all these things without realizing that they're achieving them and that they're becoming stronger doing it. >> hopefully not watching right now. >> don't tell them they're doing more than having fun. carly, it's injure second year. you're the coach and director of the showcase. tell us what this year showcase will be l >> our biggest challenge was making sure we can offer the audience something new every year. so i think we really stepped up our game this year. we've got things called the chinese pull, which is a giant pole that the kids climb. we've got a massive aerial cube, three kids on a cube. things in the air. trampoline, juggling. >> these are real skills. >> yeah, they are. these kids get together and commit for nine weeks of serious training and they understand that they're part of something amazing and really professional them commit and be on stage and be happy and excited about life. >> absolutely. this is real. this is the big thing. what's the normal program? >> we're in five sites across the valley. we work with everything from elementary school students to middle school to even have a program where we work with youth offenders in their 20s. so really a wide range of people and skills and so that happens usually three sessions throughout the year during the fall, spring and then a small summer session for those are in our showcase. runs ten to 12 weeks. then each site does their own show and tell showcase for their parents, friends and family. from that we choose kind of our all star team and build a social showcase. those are the cream of the crop. >> you mentioned that last year you had no idea how many people would turn out for the event. but tell me how many people do you expect this year? >> i'm hoping more. >> yeah, absolutely. >> in the hundreds. we're really excited. looking forward to it. >> 600 people showed up. a wonderful house at unlv. so it's a perfect place to showcase the kids and receive a large amount of guests. hopefully we get more. >> what's success for social cirkish? >> it's good you bring that up. it's important to note that we're having fun. we're teaching circus skills. the intention is not to create performers. of course, when the kids are introduced, sure, it could happen. but for us improvement in behavior. it's being able to look someone in the eye. being able to communicate needs clearly. being able to ask for help and ultimately public speaking skills, being able to look someone in the eyes and shake their hands in a job interview. it's that confidence that's going to make the real difference in these kids' lives. >> also really excited about, like, positive attendance patterns. we know some of these kids have a hard time going to school or they're not going to school and is gonna help insure they have a successful future. so by being involved with them and by sort of saying did you go to school today? did you do homework? just by seeing them come and commit to our program and say, we'll see you next week, and having them never miss a class is exciting and a measure of success for us. >> how do kids get involved? >> there is a variety of different ways. we have classes starting in the fall at the lgbt center. so they can go on the center's web site and sign up for -- get information on for the classes. otherwise we're involved in high schools and middle schools. we usually come in in the beginning of the year, invite whoever is in the school to attend the program. that's another way. >> i would imagine all the success you had over last year's showcase that that must have drawn a lot of younger brothers and sisters to want to participate. >> we do actually. it's funny. if you look at our program, we have more than one last name shows up more than once on our program. that's because we've got the younger sister, two brothers. so yeah. and their families are -- we get to know their families. that's something we can do as well, be a positive impact on the entire family's life. >> well done. what a creative program. >> yes. >> thank you so much. >> thanks for having us. >> the social cirkish, second annual student showcase happening this wednesday, 7:00 p.m. being held at the unlc ham hall. it's free. open to the public. they ask that you rsvp on their web site or facebook page. so show u that and you'll be good to go. a community event to tell you about. the circumstance headliner magician matt franco is celebrating his first anniversary on the strip in a huge way. now through september 2, a supply donation to the animal foundation score has free ticket to a show. >> the $10 minimum donation of dog and cat supplies can be donated to any petco. matt franco can be seen at the link hotel and casino. for more information, head to for over 300,000 nevadans, social security means a secure retirement. but in washington, congressman joe heck supports privatizing it... turning our savings over to wall street... and risking it on the stock market. r wall street. and they've donated over half a million dollars to his campaigns. those numbers speak for themselves. joe heck is a threat to a secure retirement, because he's part of the problem in washington. afscme people is responsible many of us wash and wear our blue jeans tore years before they reach that perfect stage where they're a little bit soft and a little bit torn. >> yeah. it's prime denim. well, designer denim brand, colt of individuality, has made an art of the distressed jeans. >> that's right. here to tell you how you can make your jeans, make you stand out from the crowd, designer ron poissen. great having you. >> hey. >> good to be here. thank you very much. >> cult of individuality denim. tell us about the brand. >> for me, growing up in rhode island, i moved to new york city. it was surfer meets big apple. so everyone has that pair of jeans in their closet that we've worn forever. and no matter where go when you travel, it's always going in the suitcase, right? you've kind of worn through it and it's patched up. i had a pair of jeans, my wife took a dozen times. and finally she was embarrassed. they can not be repaired anymore. you have those. but we worn those jeans and they've been through the good times and bad times and kind of who we are as people. denim is a canvas, right? i is a cult. it's cult statement. we all wear jeans. but it's also that individual expression, who you are. we can all wear the same exact pair of blue jeans, but how we style it, how we merchandise it tells a story about who we are. and that's where the name came from. cult of individuality. >> i love how much you love your jeans. i love blue jeans. tell me what's different about your brand and how you make hand. so we go through an aging process. denim when it first came out was a form of function. it was worn on top. then as years progressed, it became a fashion statement and the more they wore, the more vintage they look. it all started as raw denim. we offer that as well. but a lot of people don't have the patience to wear through and wear through. and for me, my m.o. when i moved to new york city, i went from kind of surf wearing the flip flops and the ripped up jeans but then i had the blazer on and the white v-neck t-shirt and i just want to start to replicate a pair of jeans that looked like it was that favorite pair. for the people that don't have the patience or time. we do a lot of hand sanding. we split the seams. it's all done by hand. it's a pallet. it's an artist's pallet. >> before we came on, this started out as a white jean jacket. >> yeah. it was white, right. >> you washed it with a pen. [ laughter ] >> yeah. we dye it black. and there is a whole phenomenon with leather going on, with pants and jackets for both men and women. so what we do is we dye black and then we do a spray chemical wax treatment four or five times to give it this wax finish. the more you wear it, the more it looks finished. this i've had four years. i wear it. i do it in burgundies. just not brack. >> i lve >> we're going to bring out some models and take a look at some of the trends. we'll have our first model come in. tell us what we're looking at. >> she's wearing -- in our women's 90% of what we do is stretch denim because they want that comfort and that ease she's wearing the zen mid rise. a little high-rise front and back. what we do is age. this is an acid wash. always what's old and new. so that whole kind of '80s acid wash thing is coming back in a big way. really stripped it down with the bleach and to gtve it a little character because that pallet. we want to do express something about our persons. >> phenomenal. love it. our second model, come on in, sir. >> this right here, this is what we call our stilt skinny. we've very big music following. we had collin ferrell coming in wearing our stilt skinny. it's it's not for everybody. it's fashion forward denim junky. here it's all aged. we've done the grinding and a little paint to make it look like it's that rigor of your daily life. we have the sweatshirt on it because we're not just a denim, we're a lifestyle brand. it's top to bottom. here we did a fake leather. subtle print with a logo. zipper detail and for a little fashion twist, our dad hat with a little logo. >> yeah. have it on the t-shirt as well. it's become the icon of the brand because i wanted to be synonymous with what we do. >> 45 seconds. we want to make sure we get the last ones. >> come on in. we'll have our next model. >> she's wearing the zen mid rise. this started light. dyed it black. did the spray coating. to give that moto feeling. >> not your typical denim. >> can i say >> it looks like she's wearing a leather pant, but it breathes much better and it also stretches. it gives you that kind of rock'n'roll edge to it, which is what our customer is. >> of course. one more model to bring. >> he's wearing moto for men. they're not only for women. translating from the tie in contemporary runways to fashion. here i go vintage. they've worn it, on the bike. the zipper details with the tapings. he's also wearing a sweatshirt same zipper on the sides. >> very cool. >> have all our models come in. where do we get this brand? this morning discover a noninvasive way to shrink down fat cells to help you lose those unwanted inches. here to explain laser liposuction is medical assistants lindsay kay for laser shed solutions. >> thanking for having me. >> laser body contouring. laser lie liposuction, they think -- >> they think surgical. >> it's scary. >> yeah. >> laser body contouring, not scary. >> it's not scary (pretty amazing. >> pretty amazing. what we're doing is we're using a laser device to shrink down the fat cell, but in a noninvasive way. so this is a completely natural process with no pain and absolutely no side effects. and this laser does work in the same sense as if you were going to the gym or you were dieting and you were losing weight. shrinking down our fat cells and this laser starts that natural process for you. it does work by creating multiple holes or pores in the fat cell so the fat cell itself can actually collapse and shrink down. the contents of the fat cell is processed through the system completely naturally, so it's released into your bloodstream. your lymph nodes are processing it and you're able to flush this all out at waste. >> it's tensionally making the fat cells into sponges. >> exactly. putting it state in the body and after you're finished your serious of sessions, that hole or pore that did open up in the fat cell, it does actually seal back up. so results with this are long lasting. >> incredible. who is a good candidate for something like this? >> male or female, it doesn't matter. you can have a lot of medical problems. we do treat a lot of patients that come in that have knee injuries, back injuries. i've treated a patient in a wheelchair before. people with copd. exercise anymore. and the nice part is you don't have to exercise with it to get results. >> you can exercise, though. >> you can. you absolutely can. there is no down time or recovery time. so there is no restrictions as far as exercise go. we encourage it. but if you can't anymore and on that stubborn belly fat, we're still able to help you and treat you. >> i think that's part of the reason some people stop exercising is 'cause they try for a few weeks. >> of course. >> and they see no change. >> you g most of our patients that come in are from about 35 all the way up to 80 years old. and they've tried dieting and they've tried exercising. nothing seems to work for them. we treat a lot of patients, especially female patients, that they're either preor postmenopausal or going through menopause and there is a lot of changes going on in their body and that's the reason they put on that stubborn belly fat. this treatment will work for treat? >> that's a nice part about this. we have basically no limitations when it comes to treating an area on the body. so we can treat the neck. we can treat the arms. we can treat the most popular area, that stubborn belly fat. >> what i'd give for the right one. >> yes. >> and we can treat the sides as well. and patients come in for a series of eight sessions where they can come twice a week or they can come for a series of nine sessions where they come three times a week. >> which is pretty incredible. i know vibration. >> yeah. >> it's kind of like squeezing that sponge. >> it helps peed up your metabolism. completed for ten minutes after your laser session with us. and the reason we have that in there is because for patients like i was mentioning before, are not able to exercise. they're able to go on this for ten minutes after their sessions and get better results. >> it's kind of -- doesn't fully fat. >> you kind of look like you're in a rap video, but it's a lot of fun. >> yeah. >> how do people get in on this?
