In an effort to make it easier, Sioux City Schools sent fifth grade ambassadors from each of its Elementary Schools to West Middle School. The goal was to show them what i want to learn about all the classes and whats different from Elementary School and then i want to just take back everything i learned to the kids in my class, said lincoln Elementary School fifthgrade ambassador abby hammer. The fifth graders learned how middle School Schedules work, and went over middle school rules. They also shadowed west middle sixth graders to learn from them, first hand. I think its a good idea because when i came, i was nervous because i didnt really know much, said West Middle School sixthgrader lily juhnke. So its good experience. The fifthgraders will create a presentation to share with their classmates when they return to their Elementary Schools. Woodbury county approved an agreement to provide Law Enforcement services to the town of correctionville, iowa. Sheriff dave drew says he sees the agreement as a necessity for smaller towns in the county. He says having one or two Police Officers for a small town is expensive, and drains their budgets. And, the agreement signed yesterday will help keep correctionvil le people safe. I think the visibility of having the Sheriffs Office there and the stability helps the communities. Its been well received by the communities. I think theres been some concern in the beginning, but they found that it just provides better said Woodbury County sheriff, dave drew. Every community in the county has signed the agreement except for moville. Drew says that community will sign the agreement soon. Woodbury county supervisors are also focusing on the future of their smaller, Rural Communities. The county Rural Economic Development Department Proposed using local option sales tax dollars to do some longterm planning. The project would look at future land use, zoning ordinances, economic and community development. Cities that already have plans include moville and Sergeant Bluff, but theres 11 Rural Communities in the county that dont. What im trying to do is help these communities do some Long Range Planning and we need to really take a hard look at their community, their existing capacities and find out what do you want your community too look like in the next 20, 30 years, said Woodbury County Rural Economic Development director, david gleiser. Look at a proposed budget for the project. The county also plans to apply for a Usda Rural Development grant, which could offset the cost of the project. Voters in twelve counties have approved a 16Million Dollar bond issue to pay for improvements at iowa Lakes Community college. The measure passed with 63 percent approval at the polls tuesday. It needed 60 percent to pass. The money will be used to pay for improvements at each of the five iowa lakes campuses. The speed limit on iowas twolane highways has been 55 milesperhour since 1974. Now, 42years later, iowa lawmakers will consider an increase of 5, or 10 miles perhour on those rural, twolane highways. Ktivs tommie clark has more. Iowa lawmakers recently advanced two plans that would raise the speed limit from 55 to 60, or to 65. But, with that increase comes concern. The Iowa Department of transportation is neutral on the issue, but they say theres risk involved. Any time traffic speeds increase, traffic fatalities increase and its really a function of the higher speeds, drivers make more mistakes and when they do make a mistake that crash is much more severe, said Iowa Department of transportation director of traffic and safety, steve gent. Local authorities agree. When you up the speed 5 and 10 mile increments you really increase the chance of an accident that youre going to do extensive Property Damage or increase your injury so its just best some things are left the same, said Woodbury County sheriff, dave drew. If the bill ends up passing it may cost millions of dollars to not only replace speed limit signs, but also ones like this. The iowa dot estimates it costing around 5 Million Dollars to replace the various signs and road markings. And thats not all. Our concern would be that roads are narrow to begin with and then we have a lot of farmers obviously with their equipment in and out, blinde drive, not enough shoulder space, a lot of curves, said Woodbury County sheriff, dave drew. The iowa dot says its a balance between safety, mobility, freight and Everything Else in the transporation system. Theres a lot of risk involved in driving. The fact that there were 320 people in the state that died on our roadways is huge, its significant, it its not an easy decision and certainly anything anyone should take lightely, said Iowa Department of transportation director of traffic and safety, steve gent. The union asked for a sixpercent increase for salaried teachers. The superintenden t says its difficult to negotiate wages this time of year without all the budget numbers from state lawmakers. Based on all the conversations weve had with the legislatures. We have a rough idea what could happen here; so the board had to open in a position they felt like they coud certainly afford, said dr. W i think what makes it seem so special, likeeou are going out to eat, is when you have a lot of colors, a lot of textures, kind of. You eat with your eyes first, so it makes it seem a lot more special if youve got the sweet, the savory, the, you know, really balance of flvors, so that way you can kind of skip the restaurant on valentines day and stay home. So, i just broiled some salmon at home that was frozen. If you wanted to even to cut it down even more, you can use the smoked salmon that you buy already prepared. That would be great in here, or if you have a smoker at home, that would be great. For my greens, i used a spinach, lets see what else i have in there. Cilantro, and cilantro is one of those things, some people love it, some people hate it. I absolutely love it, but that is something i usually dont put into a dish whehe im making it, i ll people add their own, cause not everybody likes it. But i absolutely love it. For the sauce, i love chipotle sauce. This was the only one i could find yesterday. I was looking pretty fast, but this is the only one i could find, so this is a full fat dressing, but to cut down on the fat and the calories, i mix ititith some greek yogugu, becauu i would put sour crcrm on a taco anyway, so this is a good way to add more protein, cut down on the fat and calories, and still get that nice southwest flavor, because i like my fish tacos, or, just any fish in general, to have some really nice flavor to it. So i think it pairs really well with a sweet salsa, so this is really easy. Ive made a lot of sweet salsas before with a lot of ingredients, and this one is definitely the easiest. So, i cut up a fresh, a fresh pineapple. You can use canned as well, but i like the mix of fresh and canned ingredients here. So, about a cup of fresh pineapple, about a half a cup of mandarine oranges, and you want to drain those as best you can, i just scooped mine out with a spoon, so i do have some juice in there still, some jalapenos, so we get a little sweet,a little spicy, and then you want to zest some lemon, i mean, excuse me, some lime into there, and you know, the recipe says a whole lime, but i typically dont like that much zest in mine. So as much lime zest as you like, and youre all done. Sometimes they need just a pinch of salt and a sweet salsa, just to balance the flavors, and thats all youre going to do. These flavors marry together really well. You can make this ahead of time, and then just concentrate on cooking your salmon and building your tacos on valentines dayy s nd then havvan awesome time. And, the agreement signed yesterday will help keep correctionvil le people safe. I think the visibility of having the Sheriffs Office there and the stability helps the communities. Woodbury county supervisors are also focusing on the Economic Future of the smaller, Rural Communities. The countys Rural Economic Development department is proposing to use local option sales tax dollars to comomup with e enomic Development Plans for the towns. It would look at factors like future land use, zoning ordinances, and economic and community development. Moville and Sergeant Bluff already have plans, but 11 other communities dont. What im trying to do is help these communities do some Long Range Planning and we need to really take a hard look at their community, their existing capacities and find out what do you want your community too look like in the next 20, 30 years, said Woodbury County rural economic supervisors will look at a proposed budget for the project next week.
