wx timer @ :40 >> a man barricaded himself in his me for eight hours....creating a tense situation for authorities and residents in cherokee, iowa yesterday. that standoff with police ended peacefully. ktiv's sam curtiss has more from the scene. state patrol packed up at the scene. authorities then took the man to cherokee regional medical center to be evaluated. in cherokee, iowa, sam curtiss, ktiv news four. >> the cherokee police department is expected to release more details later this morning. we'll bring you those updates as they are made available. a woman was arrested yesterday after authorities found a man with a stab wowod. 21-year-old katherine burdett, from alabama, was arrested for aggravated domestic assault. authorities were called to the 11-hundred block of 225th street in rural woodbury county yesterday morning and found 28- year-old mark jones, from wound on his chest. he was t tnsported to mercy medical center with non-life threatening injuries. the case is still under investigation. we have new details about the suspect of a stabbing spree at the university of california, merced on wednesday. investigators say they found a detailed manifeeo on the body autopsy. merced county deputies say 18-year-old faisal mohammad stabbed four people in a classroom building wednesday morning before campus police fatally shot him. but investigators say mohammad had a two- page detailed and scripted plan of his intentioio and a list of potential targets. they say he planned to tie students to their desks, lure police into the classroom, then ambush an officer, grab their gun, and open fire. they also say mohammad got kicked out of a study group and was upset with a student. he also praised a aah in his writings. but ththmerced county sheriff says there is still no indication of terrorism and that this was "just an upset teenager taking it to the extreme." sheriff vern warnke/merced county sheriff's office "i think his intention was pretty substantial. i think his capability is kinda like when you're having a dinner. your eyes are bigger than your stomach kind of thing. i don't think he had any a aual capapalities of carrying t ts out ototr than visions of grandeur." all four victims are expected to recover. classes will resume at the campus today. funeral services will take place this mororng for a young sioux city boy k kled in a fire last iday night. 3-year-old son nico torres died from smoke inhalation. the investigation into the cause of the fire at the house on central street is on going. this afternoon friends and family will gather at st. michael's church in south sioux city, nebraska. ththservice starts at 1:1: p.m. several fundraisers have been set up for the family. we have a list on our website at ktiv.com. yesterday, dozens of students and staff gathered at morningside college for a special assembly. one of their professors faces an obstaclelehat he's tackling head-on. ktiv's sheila brummer has the story. surgeon said straight out the beard has to go. my oncologist said it's going to start falling out by bits and pieces." "i've been an outdoorsman ever since i can remember," "i love to go canoeing down a river. so water quality is important to me. and it's important to everyone here. so we all really respect what we do for a living, how we can impact what's going on here." 12 and a half mililon gallons of waste flows into the plant per day. there is a screening process to get out anything that may have slipped through the system, upstream. from there it goes to a settling process. sludge settles to the bottom and the clear water from that will travel on through the system and be treated later through an activated sludge process. in that process, you have bacteria dependent on oxygen, which reduces organics and oxygen within the water. that is required by the plant's permit from the state. from there, the water is pumped over and thickened. the water then flows through a set of clarifiers, and into the river. the sludge originally separatee from the water, oes onto some anaerobic digestors where the sludge is heated up to around 95 degrees. bugs will begin to eat the food that is in the waste. and biogas is produced and reused within the facility. in siux city, tiffay lane, ktiv news 4.>> the plant uses 800 gallons of chlorine each day during disinfection season. by law, that process is required from march 15th through novememr 15th. plant leaders are working o. this comes aost three months officials confirmed they plan to take action against two former sioux city wastewater the action follows an ongoing investigation by the iowa department of natural resources and the epa intotoeleases from the plplt. former plant superersor jay pat schwarte, lost their state certifications after improper were fired in june. the plant's current supervisor says, now, they are doing things above and beyond what the dnr is requiring. "best thing i ever did," lesiak said. for chief engineer kevin rhyne, the u.s.s. sioux city is the fourth ship he's served on in his 18-year naval career. [ cheers and applause ] bernie sanders -- husband, father, grandfather, an honest leader building a movement with you to give us a future to believe in. >> the post-season continues for siouxland volleyball teams -- and one college basketball team is off to a great start. ktiv's brad pautsch has more in the sports fource morning wrap. serve that the defense mishandles, and the panthers take the lead. panthers continue to gain momentum -- meredith lammers's attack is deflected by a couple defenders and drops in for the point to keep dakota valley ahead. later on, meredith landers gets another set up and spike -- it almost hits the camera man, panthers sweep lennox in 3 sets. district finals in nebraska -- winners to state. in c1, pierce is swept by ord. inin2, guardian angels s seps hartington cc. also in c2, crofton's going to state, after a 3-2 win oveve elgin public/popopjohn. stanton falls to shelby, rising city, also 3-2. in d1, emerson-hubbard gets a state trip, 3-zip. in d2, o'neill st. mary's sweeps wynot. the nebraska state tourney morningside head coach jamie sale -- a 389 and 107 career record -- pretty good. the mustangs always play good defense. allison bachman with the steal and layin. morningside out to a 17 to 1 lead. second quarter -- yes, it's quarters this season. morningside feeds the post. freshman audra corbit -- from laurel, nebraska, lays it in. mustangs shot 54 percent from the field. now on the run, lexi ackerman to taylor bahensky for the quick 2. mustangs up 41-16 at the half. it was all home team. ackerman drops in the 3-pointer. morningside goes to 3 and 0 with a 90 to 48 win. the football playoffs continue in iowa and nebraska tonight. see the action at 10. i'm brad pautsch with the sports fource morning wrap. >> you've probably seen the waste water treatment plant in sioux city and wondered what exactly is happening inside that building. we'll take you on a behind- the-scenes tour of the building and see how city leaders hope to improve the facility when we come back. >> that "smell" you encounter on 1-29 and highway 75 can be pungent and it's often the first impression sioux city makes to visitors. for years, city leaders have tried to control the odor. it was also debated during a city council meeting a few months ago. that meeting led leaders to the city's wastewater treatment plant. they took a tour to see how the plant operates, and identify any grades that are needed. while many may have an idea of what happens once waste gets to the plant, they may not know all the details. ktiv's tiffany lane gives us an inde look into the process. process. sludge settles to the bottom and the clear water from that will travel on through the system and be treated later through an activated sludge process. in that process, you have bacteria dependent on oxygen, which reduces organics and oxygen within the water. that is required by the plant's permit from the state. from there, the water is pumped overernd thickened. the water then f fws through a set of f clarifiers, and into the river. the sludge o oginally separated from the water, goesesnto some anaerobic digestors whwhe the sludge is heated up around 95 degrees.. bugs wiil begin to eat the food that is in he waste. and biogas is produced and reused within the facility. in sioux city, tiffany lane, ktiv news 4.>> the plant uses 800 gallons of chlorine each day during disinfection season. from march 15th through november 15th. plant leaders are working on provements, every day. this comes almost three months after state officials confirmed they plan to take action against two former sioux city wastewater treatment plant employees. the action follows an ongoing investigation by the iowa department of natural resources and the epa into releases from the plant. former plant supervisor jay niday, and supervisor pat schwarte, lost their state certifications after improper disinfection practices. they were fired in june. the plant's current supervisor says, now, they are doing things above and beyond what the dnr is requiring. "we're sampling several times a day even though they have not asked us to do so," said maynes. "if they feel more comfortable [and] less stressed, it helps aid their recovery process," said anne holmes. "it's really them get on the road to recovery faster." "we had some smaller ones in here today for the ribbon cutting and their eyes just lit up," said sam burrish.
