2016. >> now all by himself as he comes into the home straightaway. >> the first ever olympic gold medal for a women's wrestler in u.s. history! >> bolt comes off with the lead and now he's really working. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is a special edition of "today at the olympic games." with matt lauer live from rio de janeiro, brazil, and savannah guthrie live from rockefeller plaza. >> and good morning, everyone. welcome to our last special split edition of "today" during these summer olympics. i'm matt lauer along with hoda kotb on copacabana beach. savannah is back in new york city. and take a look down from the chopper above. some of our athletes from team usa spelling it out for us here on the beach, and included in that group, seven medal winners 100 medals, including ashton eaton, the world's greatest athlete times two. >> there he is. >> winning the decathlon yesterday. >> by the way, that's a beautiful sight from up above, isn't it? very nice. >> don't get me wrong, i'm looking forward to going home, but i'm going to miss it here. >> i've got two words for you, wah-wah. it's been a blast on the beach and fun withhe also ahead, as we said, there are major developments overnight in that robbery scandal involving four american swimmers, including ryan lochte. two of the swimmers heading home overnight after speaking with police. but we still haven't heard from ryan lochte. so, what does this mean for his future, for his endorsements? we're going to talk to bob costas about that. and then we're going to look back at what an incredible two weeks it has been at the venues and here on our set, right? >> it really has been great. savannah on this friday morning. savannah, good morning to you. >> i'm all smiles because you guys are coming back. we'll get you caught up on politics, okay? a surprising shift from donald trump as he does something he has never done on the campaign trail, he expressed regret for making statements that he says have caused some people pain. we're going to hear from him in just a bit. for now, we'll send it back to you in rio. >> all right, savannah. thank you very much. let's talk about that scandal that continues to evolve. it involves those u.s. swimmers, including ryan locht their claims of being robbed have now been debunked by rio officials. the usoc apologizing. nbc's keir simmons is at the gas station where it all happened. keir, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey there, guys. good morning. this is the gas station that you are about to see in security footage. what's stunning this morning is that an altercation here could turn into an international incident. as you can see, there are security cameras surrounding there was never any chance that what really happened would not come out. overnight, a brokered deal with brazil. jimmy feigen's attorney saying the swimmer has agreed to donate nearly $11,000 to a brazilian charity to resolve the case. >> anything you'd like to say to your supporters? >> reporter: hours earlier -- >> have you talked to lochte at all? >> reporter: gunnar bentz and jack conger allowed to leave brazil. >> are you going to at least say good-bye to brazil? >> reporter: after giving statements to police, their brazilian lawyer taking an apparent shot at ryan lochte. telling reporters they didn't speak with any journalists or lie to any journalists. they were just quiet and didn't know what was happening. the usoc now confirming the police version of events, investigators saying the gold medalists were never robbed. the evidence, investigators say, security video from early sunday. at 5:47 a.m., swimmers ryan lochte and jimmy feigen are seen leaving a party with bentz and conger. they took a taxi back toward the at 6:07 a.m., you can see one of them head toward the back of the gas station near the bathrooms. a minute later, the four emerge followed by a gas station employee, concerned, police say, because the swimmers had vandalized the bathroom. that's one of the security cameras that filmed the footage. the swimmers walked through here. and further down, as you can see, an advertisement appears to have been pulled from the wall. and at the back are the restrooms that reports say were badly damaged, but we can see no sign of that now. the swimmers returned to their cab. at 6:09, their driver gets in and a security guard approaches, reaching out. it's unclear if he has something in his hand. at 6:12, after a discussion, the swimmers exit the taxi. at 6:14, we see a different angle. in the upper left, you can see the swimmers put their hands up and sit down. a guard approaches them with his hand on his hip. one of the guards told confrontation with the four large athletes, one of whom was getting aggressive. police say the guards let them go after they handed over $50 to pay for the bathroom damage, this a very different story from the one lochte first told "today's" billy bush. >> we got pulled over in our taxi. and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing, just a police badge. they pulled out their guns, and then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead. >> reporter: in the days since that interview, lochte changed some details, but sticking to his story that they were robbed. the american embarrassment forcing usoc to apologize to the people of brazil. "the behavior of these athletes is not acceptable, nor does it represent the values of team usa now, perhaps the confusion really occurs not here at the gas station but beside it at the car wash. this is where you can see in that security footage the swimmers sitting at the curbside. they are having a conversation with gas station officials. now, what the swimmers say is that there was no one there who spoke english. brazilian officials say there was a translator. the swimmers, perhaps, didn't understand why they were being asked for money. the brazilians say they were making it perfectly clear. perhaps all of this was lost in translation. guys? >> all right, keir. thank you very much. we can confirm now that gunnar bentz and jack conger have landed back in the united states. they arrived there just before we went on the air this morning. also, we have spoken to jimmy feigen this morning. he confirmed that he has revised the statement he originally gave to the police. >> right. >> he's agreed to pay that about $11,000 in restitution. that will apparently get him his passport back. he's not in possession of his leave brazil tonight. >> and no word from ryan lochte yet. >> not yet. >> okay. >> let's bring in nbc's bob costas, host of the prime time show on nbc. there have been so many incredibly great stories over the last couple of weeks, but this story is dominating the headlines over the last three days, bob. in the future, will this be seen as a footnote to these games or something more? >> i really think it might be a little bit more than a footnote, but it's not going to be a dominant story. so many historic things sportswise happened here. crossed and we still have a weekend left, there have been a few glitches, but by and large, none of the things we feared about an olympics in rio have come to pass. they've done a good job hosting it. the people have been wonderful. i think we've all had a good experience. and we come away with dozens and dozens of indelible memories of great sports events and people we met and interacted with. so, this, while i'm not trying to minimize it, i don't think this in the end will be something that is, you know, at the top of the list or even close. think this story got, because this really hit a sensitive spot in rio. >> yes. >> the fact that there were these, you know, robbers with badges and things like that. how much bigger did it get because of this? >> well, they are rightly concerned with the image of rio as a place that leave security that you associate with an olympics and terrorism and what not aside. they have a legitimate issue with street crime. no one denies that. so, if this had been true, they'd want the world to believe that they would have responsible. >> right. >> if it turns out essentially not to be true, then they don't want this to besmirch their reputation when they've done a generally good job of hosting an olympics. >> quickly, what's the future for these swimmers, in particular ryan lochte, who is by far the most well known of the group, in terms of endorsements, in terms of his future in the sport? what's the impact? >> well, he's the bold-faced name. i think the others more or less get a pass. people forget about it or say they were younger, no big deal. endorsements. it's not off prize money. he's probably cost himself millions and millions of dollars. >> all right. >> bob, stick around, all right? >> i will. >> bob's going to be back in our next half hour. we're going to talk about the question, are we seeing the best athletes? is this perhaps the best u.s. team ever here in rio? all right, speaking of actual competition, usain bolt, the world's fastest man, was back on the track last night as team usa reached a special milestone. natalie's here with all the highlights. nice number to reach. >> hello. our athletes have now 100 medals for the fourth straight summer games, seven of them coming on thursday, while usain bolt struck gold again. the fastest man alive, usain bolt, brushing the competition in the 200 meters. >> he makes it look easy! >> winning the sprint in three consecutive olympics. bolt's parents looking on as their son makes history. the tv audience at home. in the race, the olympic champ breaking out early and never looking back. but despite another gold, bolt was disappointed he did not break 19 seconds. >> i'm always happy for the win, but i wanted the fastest time. >> bolt, who has said rio will be his last olympics, going for a triple-triple. gold medals in the 100, 200 and relay in three straight olympics. >> and there he is. champion. >> it was also a huge day and night for team usa, racking up five gold medals. american ashton eaton maintaining the title the world's greatest athlete. >> everybody that was behind me throughout all these years, this is for them. >> enduring two days of grueling competition to win back-to-back olympic gold in the decathlon. >> in the 400-meter hurdles, dalilah muhammad taking gold in the event and teammate ashley spencer taking the bronze. on the men's side, kerron clement improved on his silver in beijing, winning gold in the 400 hurdles. >> ah! >> in the shot put, american ryan crouser also grabbing gold, hurling the 16-pound shot put over 73 feet for a new olympic record. team usa's joe kovacs gets the silver, delivering a one-two punch in the event. in women's wrestling, another gold. helen maroulis overcoming the olympic champion from japan, crying tears of joy on the podium. >> i did not start as, like, a tough girl. i lacked a lot of self-confidence, and that wrestling has given me that. >> and seimone augustus drills it. >> on the court, the american women steam-rolled france, winning their semifinal match medal round. finally, a relay redo for the american women, initially failing to qualify in the 4x100-meter relay after a brazilian runner made contact with allyson felix. >> and they've dropped the stick. >> they dropped it. >> causing this botched handoff. but the americans were allowed to run again alone. >> she has the baton. >> has the baton. >> in take two, the americans managed to qualify for tonight's so, the standings in the medal count remain unchanged. the u.s., china, great britain and russia. u.s. with a commanding lead there. take a look at that number for team usa, 100 through thursday. >> yeah! >> the fourth straight summer games of 100 medals or more. how much do we love that? and coming up today, the men's and women's 4x100 relay, the gold medal match in women's soccer. it will be sweden versus >> mm-hmm. thanks, natalie. all right, you mentioned that gold for ashton eaton in the decathlon. the world's greatest athlete is on with us at copacabana beach. how does it feel, babe? waid wait, should we just say the world's greatest athlete times two? how does it feel the second time around? >> i'm a little bit more sore now. but it feels good. >> you know, this is one of these things that goes over two days. you're known for building the second day? did you think you could hold the lead? >> you know what, i have to admit there were some times when i was a little bit doubtful, and it was a good thing because there's these young kids coming up really pushing me, and that challenge, though, is what i thrive on and i rose to the challenge, and i'm glad i did. >> well, on thursday, during the pole vault, you had that amazing pass, right? 5.2 meters. the emotion you showed after that kind of said it all. >> yeah. >> describe what that was like this is in the bag. and i think at that moment, i knew that all my training, not just for the last four years, but really through my whole life, physical and mental, kind of led up to that point. >> all comes down to the 1500 meter. >> yeah. >> how much pressure were you feeling standing at the beginning of that race? >> you know what, normally i'm very nervous, feel a lot of pressure. but i thought, i'm willing to run myself into the hospital if i have to to get this. >> wow. you going to step up and be able to do this, ashton? and i made a pact with myself. it was like, yeah, if i have to go to the hospital to run that hard, i'll do it. >> you got some kind of ridiculous criticism for wearing a canadian cap when, in reality, your beautiful bride, who's here with us, is from canada. >> yes, brianna. >> and you were cheering her on. >> yeah. >> you competed in the heptathlon. you won bronze as well. how do you guys split the focus, concentrate on your own events >> well, it's easy for me because i went first. >> yeah. >> so, it was tougher for ashton. i don't know how he does it. >> i got inspiration from her because four years ago she walked into our coach's office after getting 11th at the games. she said i'm not doing this to get 11th anymore. i want to be on the podium. so, to see that transition and have her make that dream a reality was powerful. >> wow. >> are we going to be sitting with both of you in tokyo? >> oh, man. >> no pressure. >> we haveid >> we can say that we absolutely loved and enjoyed everything up to now, but past that? >> yeah. >> okay. >> brianne, thank you so much. world's greatest athlete times two. >> amazing. >> thank you. we're going to have much more from rio just ahead. don't forget, you can catch nbc's prime time coverage of these olympic games tonight, 8:00/7:00 central time. and the spectacular closing ceremony's sunday night here on nbc. let's go back to savannah in new york. >> all right, guys. be spreading in southern florida. at least two more cases apparently traced to miami beach. nbc's kerry sanders is there for us this morning. hey, kerry. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the florida department of health confirms there are now 35 cases of locally acquired zika in south florida. the majority of those i think concentrated in a neighborhood in miami called wynwood. but now sources are telling nbc found two cases of zika here on miami beach, acquired, again, from local mosquitos. to get at that, this morning the mosquito control efforts on the beach have taken off with a vengeance. they are spraying with insecticide and at-risk not just pregnant women but also a tourism industry here that's valued at $24 billion. overnight, the city sent residents an e-mail about this, saying it is important to note of health has not confirmed any cases on miami beach. however, we have been informed that cases are being investigated. and the mayor here says the battle on the beach is now a full on war. >> we have all hands on deck. but this has been going on since january, so i wouldn't want to be a mosquito on miami beach, that's for sure. but of course, we need to factor into that that that it's the end of summer. people are getting their kids ready, so it may not be directly linked to zika, but it's certainly something they're watching closely here. savannah? >> absolutely. tourism so important where you're standing, kerry, thank you. now to the presidential race and a rare admission from donald trump. the republican nominee some of the divisive comments he's made along the way. nbc's hallie jackson is in charlotte where trump had a rally last night. hey, hallie. good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. good morning. for donald trump and his running mate from charlotte now to baton rouge, the two will be making an unexpected stop in louisiana to tour the flood damage there. it's not the only surprise from trump, as you mentioned. it's something we've almost never heard from him, this rare admission of regret about as gotten, donald trump sounding strikingly more humble in charlotte. listen. >> sometimes in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don't choose the right words or you it. >> reporter: trump today is rolling out his first general election ad hitting hillary clinton and touting his own immigration policies. nbc news learning it's part of a $4 million ad buy in four battleground states. he's on the air and on attack, going after president obama, and by extension, hillary clinton, after the state department confirmed a $400 million payment to iran was tied to the release of american detainees. the clinton foundation now saying if she's elected president, the foundation will stop accepting foreign and corporate donations. savannah? >> all right, hallie jackson on the trail for us. thank you so much. 7:20. let's send it back to rio. hey, matt, i love your shirt. >> yes. >> i love your shirt. >> yes! >> and also, if you lycopena collottas and getting caught in the rain, you should definitely wear that shirt. >> no, i'm afraid this isn't >> i'm already tweeting from that shirt, just so you know. >> got its own account. >> the shirt. >> all right, we'll see you in a little while. what's happening weatherwise? >> well, unfortunately out west we still get that heat. it's not helping the fire danger down throughout california. gusty winds in the mountains, dry, warm into the weekend. you can see red flag warnings. and we're also looking at record heat in the pacific northwest. look at these temperatures. records today and saturday. cooler into next week, but in the meantime, from seattle all the way down to medford, we're talking temperatures triple digits, not feels-like, but actual air temperatures getting down into northern california. we're going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds. that's your latest weather. guys. >> all right, al, thank you very much. coming up with big names dominating like michael phelps the final five and usain bolt his real home to the greatest group of olympians ever assembled. assembled. we'll get into that with bob i'm catherine cortez masto and i approve this message. four years agogo i was diagnosd with breast cancer but early treatment saved my life. so i'm really outraged that joe heck voted ten times to defund planned parenthood which thousands of nevada women depend on for cancer screenings. congressman heck even threatened to shut down the federal government just ahead on our last morning in rio. . >> dana: hi, there. it is 7:26 on this friday morning. i'm dana wagner here at news 3, and the bluecut fire continues just east of los angeles about three, three and a half hours from here. but the good news about all of this is interstate 15 is now open in both directions so if you're driving to southern california this morning from las vegas, you'll be able to get there going the whole way on interstate 15. this fire is now 22% contained and some of that smoke from the fire is still making its way into southern nevada, although, kelly curran, on wednesday, we were really socked in, yesterday and maybe some of the lingering haze out there, as well. >> yeah, a little bit lingering. there is still air quality advisory in place, if we look outside of the las vegas springs preserve camera, we can see the mountains in the background. one thing that is different today, the clouds that we're seeing in the area. the temperatures heading out the doors, 82 lakes, and henderson and summerlin you're still at 79 degrees. we are highs, around 103 with a chance of storms and thunderstorms in the afternoon and the best chance is east of the valley and we can't rule out las vegas plus more chances sunday and monday. >> the 15 is now open, which is good news. but when i go to l.a., i stake state route 18 and top at charlie's farms for a date shake, and we have an accident shoulders but nevertheless, look how slow the traffic is going by, maybe because of the second accident. this is a different view on vegas drive on the shoulder but still very slow. your travel times, actually not that bad in a month after 9/11, i got a call from david and he told me he was going into the national guard. he was sent to iraq to be a gunner on a humvee. a car pulled up in the driveway and three soldiers got out, you have moments when you really don't want to live anymore, it's a fate that i would not wish on anybody, not anybody. when i saw donald trump attack another gold star mother, i felt such a sense of outrage. ...wife, she was standing there, she had nothing to say, she probably... i would like to tell donald trump what it feels like, the sense of emptiness, that only losing a child can bring. and i don't think that donald trump will ever understand that. we've been showing the beautiful beach all week long. now we're going to show you a great sight here at the beach. we're back at 7:30 on a friday august 19th, 2016. and take a look at all of the athletes from team usa who have come to join us on this friday morning. getting a nice welcome from the crowd here. >> so emotional. beautiful. beautiful. we're going to get you caught up on all of the olympic headlines. apologizing to brazil for the behavior of four swimmers including ryan lochte who will claimed they were victims of an armed robbery. investigators determined that's not what happened. the group actually vandalized a gas station bathroom. gunnar bentz and jack conger were allowed to leave rio last night arriving in the u.s. this morning and jimmy feigen agreed to pay nearly $11,000 in restitution to get his passport back. that money goes to charity. >> last night was a big one in usain bolt cruised to gold for the third straight olympic. american ashton eaton won a second straight gold in the decathlon and delilah muhammad became the first woman to win gold in the 400 women's hurdles. >> and the women's basketball team will advance to the final. >> let us begin with a rare do over at the olympics. a baton botched appeared to drop the women out of the relay. defending champs filed an appeal and given another shot at making tonight's final. >> felix now to garner. >> they dropped the stick. the united states is out. >> a botched baton exchange leaving team usa frustrated. >> see if we >> i felt contact and it tripped me up. >> allyson felix quick on her feet kept hope alive encouraging her teammates to finish the race so they could file an appeal. the successful protest disqualifying brazil and giving americans a relay redo. a race against the clock alone chance to qualify for tonight's final. >> she has got the united states in the final. >> we definitely feel vindicated. our job was to come out and qualify for the finals the first time. we bounced back. we're confident. >> team usa once again in the running as it prepares to defend its gold medal from the 2012 london games. >> it's been tough no doubt. i have an amazing team and these ladies have lifted me and encourage me just advance to the final but they did so with the fastest qualifying time and you can see that race tonight here on nbc. >> let's get a check of the weather right now from al. >> this is pretty -- this is amazing really. look at this. a parade of olympic athletes all here on our deck just hanging out. all together. look at this. you're not going to see this gentlemen. this is pretty cool. how exciting is this? wow. all right. i'm just going to walk back again because i can. let's show you
