Least monday kron fours taylor has more on the people injured. Furious about the. The fact that folks stormed onto a School Campus with guns, a shooting. And with the intent to do harm, oakland city Councilmember Loren Taylor says hes frustrated by the continued gun violence in the city but thankful wednesdays shooting hasnt turned deadly. He says 3 of the victims remain in the hospital, but theres progress. The 2 victims who are Critical Condition are now stable and lee. So that is. Comforting Oakland Police say on the 6 people shot to our students. One is a school counselor. Another is a Security Guard into worked at the school, usd carpenter, jason arbuckle. Hes been in touch with kron. 4 news in was understandably too tired to talk with us on camera after just being released from the hospital. Arbuckle says its a miracle hes alive and was able to go back home on thursday. He says he was installing a trophy display case on the wall at the time of the shooting. We also learned from Council Member taylor that the Security Guard on king estate campus helped save students. The Security Guard you know, hes been on site that he was wounded, shot in the leg and that through acts of heroism and bravery went to, you know, protect others despite being injured and even applying cpr to one of the the victims late thursday evening. Bay area tech posted an update on its social media page saying the Security Guard is staying strong. Meanwhile, little to no information has been released about the other 4 victims, something glenn upshaw senior with Community Organization youth alive says his unusual normally when get situations like this, we do give referrals and were able to meet with victims. Are even were able to identify who may be the shooter was or who the victims are. In this case, we have not identified anyone concrete and is really interesting because hes really been has has still no information has been released about the 2 shooters and no arrests have been made. Im Taylor Bisacky reporting kron. 4 news. And here now to discuss the latest on the investigation is Oakland Police chief leronne armstrong, thank you so much, chief for joining us live here today. Thank dan. And i just want to start off by saying we are very sorry to hear about this violence impacting your community. We know that this case is a priority for your department and you have updates on the suspects who are involved in the shooting worse. Now we dont have any more that we had yesterday. Essentially, we do know that theres 2 individuals that we believe are responsible for the shooting. We believe that they fired over 30 rounds inside the school and obviously strike in 6 people. And so we are following up on all leads and tips that weve gotten so far. But nothing at this point is let us to the suspects. Okay. And chief, the issue of campus shootings does seem to be a recurring theme, lately we have we know 3 School Shootings that happened on oakland campus is within the last 60 days. Can you help us understand why these incidents keep happening . Whats been challenging throughout the city of oakland with the level of gun violence that weve seen across our city and for several months, ive been speaking to the public in the community about the liberation of firearms. I think it was just a matter of time with number firearms. Weve seen our community that they made them on to our School Campuses. And thats really unfortunate. And when are these firearms coming from . We know that these firearms, some of which are what they call, i believe, withis known we also know that some have been purchased out of state brought in to state. And so my some dealers, our partnership with the atf is critically important and theyve been on the ground helping us with this investigation as well. And chief, it seems like the suspects in this latest shooting on campus. Were able to get on to the School Campus pretty easily. Do you think this could have been preventable in any way . No, i think the school has a security staff that at the door any time armed suspects come to a Campus Student challenging to say that anybody can stop them without being hurt or injured. I do applaud those put their lives at risk and help. Students also want to thank the heroic officers that responded and went into the school to the shooters as well as provide medical for those that were but these are very difficult situations that, you know, its hard to say if you can prevent them, i havent someone at any location when you have 2 armed suspects who intend shoot someone. And is the answer to preventing future School Shootings, more policing or is it Something Else . I think its a combination of both. Think we have to have president s around our schools. We have to be to respond to any incident, but it really starts off with our school community, sharing information with police, making sure that if any threats come to the staffer to the school, that they sure that if we hear any further information regarding a firearm on our campuses, that information needs to be immediately share with Law Enforcement so that we can prevent these things from and we heard mayor schaff call just yesterday for federal gun control to stop the flow of guns into oakland. Is this something you support as well . Yes, weve been calling on this for several months. I think the mayor has been echoing this pretty loud that we need legislative support to help prevent some of these high powered weapons from entering our community. We obviously that far too many shootings with rifles, high caliber weapons as well extended magazine that are often used in the shootings as well. All of those could be controlled by some legislative law to help and last question here for you, chief and the remaining time we have left, what is your message to Community Members concerned about whats happening in oakland and what can we do collectively to address crime . My message is that the Oakland Police department is going to leverage every resource that to prevent violence and apprehend those that are driving violence. We clearly know that the vast majority violence is getting in Group Related violence and were going to continue to use our ceasefire straight to stop that violence from community if you know s something, share something. This is not a time to think about not snitching and not bring forth information. People who commit these crimes have to be held accountable. So really calling our can on our community right now to bring forth the information that we need to find the individuals that committed this heinous crime. Alright, Oakland Police chief armstrong. We wish the city of oakland and your community much healing in the days moving forward. Thank you very much for your time. Thank you for having me. And we will continue to follow the latest developments from oakland both on air and online. You can head to kron 4 dot com for the latest information or download the kron 4 mobile app to get those updates at any time. In other news this afternoon, rescue crews leapt into action this morning after a car plunged off a cliff on highway one in san mateo county. It happened shortly after 9 oclock this morning. Authorities say the car crashed more than 200 feet below in the area of gray whale cove state beach. At least one lane of the highway is closed while crews worked to clear the scene and thats where we find kron fours. Charles clifford joining us live from the peninsula with the very latest on this. Charles, what can you tell us . Well, the Highway Patrol says that one in his 60s was rescued from that vehicle down on the beach. He was cut out of the car using the jaws of life for the rescuers used the jaws of life and then he was flown by helicopter to a hospital is described as having a serious injuries but being in stable condition. Its probably going to be ok, he was the only occupant of the car was going to take a look at some video here. As you mentioned, this call came in about 9 oclock this morning. Reports of a vehicle, maybe 3, 4, 100 yards down the cliff out on the beach just to the south of the tom lantos tunnel. Others just to the south of double slide there. I was sitting down on the beach kind of hard to see because of the fog. We did to get one photograph of it sort of from a distance and the Highway Patrol had to close traffic down to one lane. So the emergency crews could come in and rescue that driver of the vehicle. And currently theyre working on trying to come up with a plan to get the vehicle up off of the beach to the Highway Patrol is investigating this. But they say early indications are that speed was most likely a factor. He was that the driver was most likely exiting the tom lantos tunnel headed south. And theres a curve there to the left and he was going too fast for the conditions unsafe speed was a factor in this collision, possibly driving a little bit too fast. The vehicle was entering a curve portion of the roadway at the time of the collision, there was no fault or minimal haziness in the area. As you can see, the fog has now overtaken this area. So, yes, we need everyone to be cautious anytime theyre driving through this area and Pay Attention to the road to especially under adverse conditions. All right, back live. Now. They have brought in a record. They want to try to get that car up off of the beach. But the fog is really just socked in here. And theyre considering possibly delaying removing that vehicle from the beach until the fog lifts up a little bit. So if youre driving along highway one through a double slide area, keep in mind that there could be some delays as they complete that work. But for now in san mateo county, Charles Clifford kron, 4 news thanks very much, charles, for that live report. And speaking of the fog and the weather, ets talk a bit about our forecast now as we take a live look outside at South Carolina. I believe thats where our live cam is going to be pointed we also do have kron 4 meteorologist kyla grogan standing by with more details on. I believe hurricane conditions out there. Yes, still category one hurricane actually made landfall in South Carolina, georgetown, South Carolina, just about an hour ago, stephanie. So coming in for the second time, right, second landfall for the system for hurricane and. And you can see it right here that very kind of tell tale sign of the kind of clockwise circulation of low pressure system. And this is where it came ashore. So is north of charleston. And youre just about to myrtle beach kind of halfway between their georgetown, South Carolina. Again, that was a 205, pm eastern time here. You can see kind of zoom in a little bit closer. There. That is where landfall happened in. This is a loop the last 4 hours and this is a bunch of storm reports which as you can imagine, keep popping up as this goes on in your eye might go to this one because that is just south of wilmington and holden beach where they had some of that spotted a tornado. And so thats the kind of weather that get kicked up with this type of a storm. Also, of course, when 50 Miles Per Hour gusts you can see here in beaufort in north carolina. So its been a little bit of a run. So lets track this. Just show you how this plays out. I would expect that it will go to a remnant low. In other words, drop back to kind of what would be Tropical Storm winds, but not, you know, over the sea over the land become a remnant low as we get into later tonight. And our next update on. Im sure well start to see that. But in the meantime, still a lot of rain to fall here. You can see several inches expected. Probably the 2 to fourinch range, an area that you see in red, very different story here in the bay. Ill be back in just a bit. Well talk about our local forecast. Ill get you ready for the weekend for now. Send it back to stephanie. All right. Thanks very much. Time. Coming up on the kron, 4 news at noon. The hardly strictly Bluegrass Festival starts today. Thats why cal fire firefighters, the American Lung association, and the California Democratic Party Support prop 30. Prevent fires. Cut emissions. And cleaner air. Yes on 30. Gas prices in the bay area have gone up 0. 60 just this week. Its well over 6 a gallon and premium is as high as 7 and 0. 34 in some areas. Kron 4 Sarah Stinson explains. Drivers out here in marin county are paying a steep price at the pump. Its 6. 79 for regular gas, 7. 9 for supreme gas. Many saying they have no choice but to pay these prices to get to work. But on the weekends, theyre opting to leave the car in the driveway. Its horrible. It. Cant really go anywhere. Can do anything other than going to work going home. Thats about it. Some drivers can barely afford one gallon of gas. You can see evidence of that at this pump. Less than one gallon costing 6 and 0. 50. Hopefully that got someone to work in the bay area. Gas prices have gone up more than 0. 60 on average per gallon in the last week. Well, my commute is really long, but i dont have to do it all that often. So. Yeah, its kind of a hard take a look at the major spike in gas prices in the bay area. 61 more sense in the last week in napa. 68 more sense in oakland, San Francisco has the most expensive gas on average, but its gone up the most in san jose, 0. 70 more in just one week. It has some drivers rethinking their budgets. Get the cheaper peanut yeah, it makes me think about other things. While gas prices in california continue to strain the wallets of drivers, 76. The average cost of gas nationwide is barely rising. According to aaa, it only went up 0. 11 in the last week costing on average 3. 79 a gallon. Gas experts say some of the main reasons for high prices over the summer months include supply, not matching demand the war in ukraine. And now the hurricane in florida will not be helping out gas prices either drivers hope to get some relief soon. We did see a dip in prices last month, but now theyre soaring yet again. And were heading into the holidays so we can only expect gas prices to continue to rise for now. Im sara stinson reporting in marin county. Back to you. And new at noon, california is now the first state in the nation to offer refuge for transgender youth and their families. The measure led by San Francisco senator scott wiener is designed to protect families with transgender kids under 18 from print criminal prosecution. If they travel to california to get gender affirming health care, the move comes after more than 20 republican led states across the nation introduced legislation banning this type of medical care. The new law goes into effect january. 1st. And the governor vetoed a bill that would have given some relief for Homeless People with unpaid parking tickets under assembly bill. 16, 85 local governments and universities would have forgiven parking fines up to 1500 for unhoused people. The governors move a big disappointment for antipoverty advocates across the state. In a statement, the governor said that although he is sympathetic a statewide requirement for parking ticket forgiveness is not the answer to the problem.
