(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. actively searching the water for four people. including two children under the age of eight, believed to have abandoned their sailboat off pillar point drifting towards santa cruz. at around 4:30 this afternoon, the coast guard received a message saying that the boaters were having trouble with their communication system. at 5:30 the coast guard reports they lost all contact and sign of them. the sailboat has yet to be found. as of right now the coast guard is looking for 4 people.in the water. authorities say the boat had no life jackets or life rafts on board. we're joined now by the coast guard lietenant heather lampert. >> roright now, we have several searches underway. >> how long do think that to continue the search? >> we do not have a time frame we're going to continue with any additional manpower. >> you are breaking up a bit but we understand that there are two children on board. and you've lost communication with these boaters and do you thing that they were going to abandon shepherd? >> they were abandoning ship because they were taking on water that is why there were going to abandon ship.. >> we also have word that there were no life jackets. would they just be out in the water without? on perhaps some of them would keep them afloat? >> before that, they said that there were going to make a makeshift life raft. >> to they have any flares on board? >> we are not sure if they have those on if the tomatoes with them on the lights craft. if they ever to a post- fliers with them on the filf life raft. several fires in san francisco. leave many without homes tonight. the latest. a restaurant fire in the tenderloin district that sends residents scrambling out of their apartment building. kron 4's haaziq madyun spoke with those residents. >> "fire fire get out now" >> "we just immediately grabbed our wallets and left" >> "the entire building was evacuated" >> reporter: evacuated because of a fast moving fire that started in this restaurant then quickly moved up several floorsburning its way to the top of this mixed-use building on golden gate and larkin street in san francisco >> "it was a grease flute in the restaurant that extended up the floors and got into 8 apartments" >> reporter: smoke was a major problem for residents trying to get out of the building >> "we looked down the hallwayall the way to the top" >> "no time for that" >> reporter: it took about an hour for sf firefighters to contain the 2-alarm blazeall of the residents made it out kelly shows us the damage. >> reporter: this youtube video you are looking at shows the flames and smoke from the 2nd alarm fire that broke out at around just after 11:30 pm saturday.the red cross says 7 units and 17 people were affected.some by the water and smoke damagebut here you och that was destroyedthis tenant surveying the damage. has lived in this apartment for more than 30 years >> a relatively ok.but his home is unlivable the charred timbers of the attic now can be seen thru holes in the ceiling. what possesions he has leftblackened.and wet, covered with ash and insulationwhich is also muddying the floors. his roommate came home this morning to find her life turned upside down >> everything is gone, it's hard to even stand in there because there is so much smoke to breathe dust, ashes everything is just black and wet and piles of burnt stuff hal >> reporter: physicall hurt.but some found the fact that they were without a place to call home.difficult to deal with kelly kron4 news. >> a gang member is wanted by the santa cruz police department. following a terrifying home invasion robbery earlier this week. kron four's philippe djegal tells us more about the man on the run. and, where he lives. this is 22-ear-old esteban lopez. --22 year old...the santa cruz police department says he is a documented gang member. who arrest records show, earlier this year, was arrested on felony drug charges. he lives in this blue home with his mother on fairmount avenue. just three blocks away from this green home on poplar avenue. where investigators say he and a 28-year-old man broke in, and held a family of four hostage. just after four o'clock wednesday morning. police say lopez and his accomplice bound the couple, then threatened to harm their two young daughters with a screwdriver and a sword. but the couple managed to free themselves, and trapped one of the suspects, later arrested by police. lopez got away on foot. investigators here at police headquarters say lopez hasn't been seen since the home invasion. not at home, not at work. if you have any information on his whereabouts, call police. he stands 5-feet-7, weighting 130 pounds. in
