What happened yesterday, it is absolutely devastating and depressing. Sadly, it is not that surprising. The lg bt community has been the subject of physical violence, harassment, beatings, murders forever. It happens every day. This is simply the most extreme example of the hatred and the violence against our community. Unfortunately, the political environment in the us, where we have states passing laws saying that lg lg bt citizens are not full citizens, that just fuels the atmosphere of hatred. And now, were getting ready for pride celebrations here in San Francisco coming up in two weeks. Talk about what you would say to people who were worried about the events coming up here . The last thing that we should be doing is responding to this kind of violence by pulling in were did not living our lives and not celebrating our community. And so the pride parade and festival will go on. We will celebrate. Will embrace our community, and we will show the love that is at the heart of this community. And so we will absolutely not let this set us back. Just make us work harder and be stronger. With that said, we have to make sure that pride is safe and secure, and the Police Department and the Pride Committee are talking today to really go through that stepped up security process. In addition, later this week, i am going to convene a meeting here in city hall with the Police Department and the lg bt bar and club owners so that the bars and clubs can understand exactly what they need to be doing to step up security during pride season and beyond. It really is a balance of celebrating, but at the same time, preparing. Absolutely. We need to live our lives in celebrate our communities and have wonderful festive celebratory pride season while also being vigilant. We find out that they initially exchanged shots with the gunman right away with that attack, but then he ran into a bathroom. The gay community, they have made a lot of strides over the past few decades, but then this happened. It happened at a gay nightclub. We got a chance to talk to people this morning. Here is what they had to say about the massacre. A minor setback. It was a wakeup call. It is a wakeup call that we should not just sit around and do nothing. We should fight for a better life and a better society. It is a tragic thing. It was awful. I am thinking about working or walking to work this morning, and i am thinking that this is some kind of a death cult with the terrorists. Several people talked about how upset they were about the hatred toward the lg bt q community. They spoke out against the nra, but they said that the main goal of the march was to show support for the victims of the shooting. She is the current wife of omar mateen, the shooter in orlando. We are being told by neighbors that she lived here as a child, and she went to high school in crockett. A sweat high school. She married omar mateen about five or six years ago, according to the neighbors. They say that she met him online. It was her second marriage. According to those neighbors, they say that she went to the middle east to marry him. Were also being told that the mother of nor is inside of this home. She was visited by police yesterday. What we are being told is that she was told by police not to answer the door. We did make attempts to talk to her. So far, she has not answered the door. She has no comment on the situation. According to those neighbor, according to those neighbors, nor has not been back to the house. She came back when her father died. Other than that, she is not been back to the house. As far as omar can omar mateen, there is conflicting reports. Some neighbors believe that he was at the house before the marriage occurred. Others say that they never saw him. There is still developing news. If we get any updating information, we will pass it along. They have showed professionalism and extraordinary bravery that is saved lives. We are very lucky for such good people to be serving in Law Enforcement. Lastly, would like to say thank you for the people who have rendered care and to have saved lives at the same. The docs, emts, the victim specialist, in the ordinary citizens who stopped to help family and friends. You showed us the best part of humanity in the midst of terrible loss. As you know, this is a federal terrorism investigation led by the fbi with the assistance, as we always do, of our state, local, and federal partners. The reason for that is there a strong indications of radicalization by this killer, and a potential inspiration by Foreign Terrorists organizations. We are spending a tremendous amount of time, as you would imagine, trying to understand every moment of this killers path to that killers path to that terrible night in orlando. Were trying to understand his motives in the details of his life. I am not killing the im not using the killers name, and i will try not to do that. I do not want to do that for the sake of the victims and their families and so that other twisted minds do not think that this is a path to fame and recognition. What i want to do is give you a sense of what we know so far. And then i will tell you is much as i can about our past contact with the killer. We are going to the killers life, as i said, especially his electronics to understand whether there was anyone else involved either in directing him or in assisting him. So far, we see no indication that this was a plot directed from outside the United States, and we see no indication that he was part of any kind of network. It is also not entirely clear at this point just what terrorist group he aspired to support. Although he may clear his affinity at the time of the attack for i sold for isis, and generally leading up to islamic groups. He made 911 calls from the club during the attack at about 2 30 am sunday morning. There were three different calls. He called and he hung up. He called again and spoke briefly with the dispatcher, and then he hung up. And then the dispatcher called him back again and they spoke briefly. There were three total calls. During the calls, he said that he was doing this for the leader of isis who renamed, and he pledged loyalty to. But he also appeared to claim solidarity with the perpetrators of the Boston Marathon bombing and solidarity with a florida man who died as a suicide bomber out of a group in clot in conflict with the socalled islamic state. The bombers at the Boston Marathon and in the suicide bomber from florida were not inspired by isis which adds a little bit to the confusion about his motives. Were working to understand what role antigay bigotry may have had in bit in motivating this attack. Made in the month that we recognize and celebrate our lgbtfriendlys and sisters. It is early, were working hard to understand the killer and his motives and his sources of inspiration. But we are highly confident that this killer was radicalized and at least in some part, through the internet. That is what we have been doing. Now, let me tell you what i can about the fbis prior contact with the killer. We first became aware of him in may 2013. He was working as a Contract Security guard at a local courthouse. He made some statements that were inflammatory and contradictory that concerned his coworkers about terrorism. First, he claimed family connections to al qaeda. He also said that he was a member of his bala his bala which is a shia organization and is a bitter enemy of the so called islamic state. He said that he hoped that the Police Department would come into his home and murder his wife so he could be a martyr. We attempted to determine whether he was possibly a terrace. It is something that we do in hundreds of cases all across the country. Our investigation involved introducing Confidential Sources to him, recording conversations with him, following him, reviewing transactional records from his communications, and searching all Government Holdings for any possible connections, any possible derogatory information. We then interviewed him twice. He admitted making the statements that his coworkers reported that explained that he did it in anger because he thought that his coworkers were discriminating against him and teasing him because he was muslim. After 10 months of investigation, we closed the preliminary investigation. Two months later, in july two months later, in july 2014, the killers name surfaced again in an indirect way. Our miami office was investigating the florida man who had blown himself up for the missouri the group. The killer mentioned that he knew him casually from attending the same mosque from that area and florida. But our investigation turned up no ties between the two of them. In the course of that investigation, when asked if you know anybody else that might be radicalizing, they had mentioned they may have been concerned about the killer because he had mentioned some videos. He concluded that he later got married, had a child and got a job as security job and so we were no longer concerned about him. We determined that he did not in the in the inquiry focused on the suicide bomber with no further focus on the orlando killer. We will continue to look forward in this investigation and backward. We will leave no stone unturned, and we will work all day and all night to understand the path to that terrible night. Will also look in our own work to see if there was something we should have done differently. The honest answer is, i do not see anything in reviewing our work that our agents should of done differently. We will look at it in an open and honest way and be transparent about it. Our work is very challenging. We are looking for needles in a nationwide haystack, but were also called upon to find out which pieces of pay might someday become needles. That is hard work. If we can become if we can find a better way to do that, we will work will also do our best about being transparent about what we find Going Forward, consistent with our need to do our investigation in a good way. We will tell you as much as we possibly can. Let mes let me close by saying something ive said before. We know that this killing is upsetting to all americans. We hope that our fellow americans will not let fear become disabling because that is what these savages want. We hope that instead you will channel this sense of anxiety into something more positive, which is an awareness of your surroundings and the seeking of opportunities to help your fellow americans as we saw with a tremendous line of people giving blood in orlando.
